Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Assassins and cowards is what french president Francois Hollande called these gunmen that opened fire armed with what is believed to be submachine guns. They were heard shouting we have avenged the prophet. Bystanders filming the whole thing mostly from nearby rooftops. Watch. [ gunshots ] editor and top cartoonist who made a living out of lampooning all religions but it appears this attack is in retaliation for cartoons about islam. Two Police Officers were killed and graphic video showing the moment one of them lying wounded blurred for in the bottom of your screen was shot in the head. We know 11 people are wounded. Four of them critically. As for gunmen they left and sped off according to paris prosecutor they engaged in multiple shootouts with police and then continued into another district of paris where they ditched their original car, got into another one and for now the manhunt for these terror suspects continues. Joining me live from paris, no one knows where these men are. Two possibly three. Do police have any leads . At this point they are asking for witnesses to come forward. Anybody who was near the scene that might have seen something not only at the site of the offices at those buildings there, but also in the area where gunmen took their black vehicle and drove it and ditched it and hijacked another vehicle. So police are asking anyone who might have seen this other vehicle where it was going trying to sort of follow the tracks of where these gunmen have gone. So far, however, they have not made any public announcements about any new developments of where they are or who these gunmen might be. We have seen Forensics Team coming through the site of the attack and if that vehicle they are looking for clues as to who these guys are and where they are going to. Thats what we know so far. Fred let me pivot to you. Weve been stunned by images coming out of paris. Weve seen thousands of people peacefully protesting with pens symbols of freedom of speech. Absolutely. This is a very respectful protest and one i have to say is remarkable. As you said this is a protest for freedom of speech and in support of that satirical magazine and what people behind me are screaming is we are Charlie Hebdo. These are things that these people are screaming. One of the interesting things they are doing is holding moments of silent where they hold pens into the air that the pen will not be silenced by tragic events that happened here today. Theres a lot of talk here of liberty. People saying that liberty will not be infringed upon. One thing i find remarkable right now that has about 10,000 people here is that there is no antimuslim sentiment whatsoever here. You have a lot of people here from france and from paris and Muslim Community demonstrating side by side with the folks here and a lot of them actually have drawn that symbol those letters, in arabic to show they are demonstrating this is not happening in the name of islam but that these people were acting well outside any sort of guidelines of that sort. This is a very positive protest considering that these tragic events are only several hours away. Incredibly compelling images from paris and beyond there in france. Thank you. Their jobs didnt involve weapons but they knew how dangerous their work was. They knew. Look at this wanted poster. This is from pages of a march 2013 issue of al qaedas magazine inspire, and the title is most wanted dead or alive for crimes against islam. And center right, this is Stephane Charbonnier. Hes known as charb. He along with three of his colleagues were killed in todays massacre. Let me bring in our chief International Correspondent christiane amanpour. I know you have interviewed you know some of these cartoonists. Off the top, i want to ask you about Francois Hollande. At the top of the last hour we heard him not mince words talking about continuing to defend this freedom of speech and mentioning tomorrow as a national day of mourning there in france. Saying that peace and justice is under attack. What did you make of his message . He was clearly trying to galvanize a traumatized nation. This is the worst terror attack in europe in a decade. Its been a very very big shock as you can imagine not just in paris but also around western europe and particularly of course in all of the journalistic professions. Theres a real sense of solidarity. Theres a real sense of that this wasnt a terror attack. This was an execution. These people came to this newspaper because of what it had done in the past and called and singled people out and shot them execution style. We saw them do that to one of the police on the sidewalk. We dont have video of what happened inside the building. This is a terrible, terrible moment. Stephane charbonnier has been quoted in the past as saying only those who want to be shot will be shot. He said i dont believe that i am endangering anyone with my pen and its only activists and way they react that is deadly danger. That was his position about that. I think it will potentially galvanize people to make sure that in some ways charlie continues and marches and presence in solidarity as fred was just reporting, they all say that we are charlie today. Right. Paul you are looking at all of the videos and what we saw from eyewitnesses taken from rooftops near this magazine building in paris and we get a sense of what happened just sort of almost on a superficial level. The single shots. Marks marksmanship from gunmen not just spraying with bullets but single shots. They spoke perfect french. They wore masks. Top to bottom in black. What do all of those signs tell you . Anything . There seems to be a certain amount of sophistication that they have. It appears these two fighters didnt know where the offices of this newspaper were that they had to go next door first. Theres also some signs of some amateurishness here as well. Its not clear if this is an al qaeda or isis ateam sent back or whether this is just a lone wolf terrorist attack inspired by isis or al qaeda. We dont really have enough information to point us any further, brooke. Are you surprised that nobody has stepped forward and claimed responsibility yet . Its very very early. The attack just happened a few hours ago. There have been various claims put out by various people on twitter. They are cautious about those so far. There has been no formal claim of responsibility from al qaeda or isis through their official spokesman yet. If there are claims they could come in the next hour or day. Isis is quick on getting claims out and i think if it is them there could be propaganda they could put out. There are 400 french nationals fighting in syria and iraq right now. 200 have returned to france from fighting in syria and iraq. These gunmen could have perhaps learned how to kill people in syria and iraq. Too early to tell yet. Okay. Christiane amanpour we heard earlier in the day from president hollande that authorities had thwarted multiple attacks in recent weeks on this magazine and france is now on its highest alert. You talked a moment ago about the last time there was any kind of terror attack in france but big picture, how unprecedented is this . Well its very very difficult to find an equivalent to what just happened. Its the biggest terrorist attack in europe not just in france since 2005. Since the attack in britain on the Public Services. Also it is specifically different than that attack. In the past as weve been reporting, there have been attacks on military targets for instance or on Public Services on civilians in countries that extremists blame for joining the war against iraq or whatever it might have been. This was very different. They went straight to a newspaper, a newspaper known over the last many, many years for taking this stance and as the newspaper said and as they said to me when i interviewed them about this we dont intend to insult. Thats not our job. Were just poking fun of the absurd and the absurd exists on these fringes and in the extremes of these targets that we attack. Thats basically whats happened today. Thats been very very damaging of course to many members of the journalistic profession all around because people are worried about what happens next . How does one continue doing your job in this environment thats incredibly difficult to navigate right now. To your point a few minutes ago, perhaps it will have a galvanizing effect. Thank you both. Next freedom of speech under attack not just in todays tragedy but recent ones as well. Well discuss that. Plus were getting new information about that getaway car and that apparent signal. A wave of a hand that one of the gunman gave gunmen gave during that escape. Stay with me. This is cnns special live coverage. I have moderate to severe crohns disease. Its tough, but ive managed. But managing my symptoms was all i was doing. So when i finally told my doctor he said humira is for adults like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohns disease. Back to our breaking coverage out of paris. 9 16 local time there in paris. 12 People Killed in this office of this satirical magazine. 11 more wounded. Four in serious condition. A manhunt under way for three suspects. If the attack was an attempt to intimidate the french it was a spectacular failure. Let me show you these pictures. Nation may be mourning victims here but also rallying to the cause of free speech holding up i am charlie and holding up pens symbols of freedom of speech showing they will not be bullied by these terrorists. Massive crowds gathering in paris and beyond. Many people carrying those signs referencing this magazine where this massacre occurred. This coward lyly act, the word used by the president of france. Lets get to our guests now. Welcome to both of you. Lots and lots to talk about. Lets begin with the target. Bobby, this was not a military target. This was an office that clearly had been targeted before. They were well aware they had targets on their back. There were wanted signs of them in inspire magazine. What do you make of a soft target of a Magazine Office . This is not a statement about French Foreign policy. This is not a protest or retaliation against french participation in afghanistan or in mali. This is very clearly an attack on a soft target. They didnt pick a military target. They didnt pick on this soft target when there were police guards around that office. They picked it because it was soft and vulnerable at this time. They picked it on a wednesday. The day one issue closes and staff gathers to plan for the next issue. This is a small magazine. Most staff actually work from home. On any other day, there would be a much smaller turnout in the office. They picked this day. Theres a lot of very careful planning based on circumstantial evidence. We know there were firebombs november of 2011 and therefore Police Protection over the last couple years and we heard from the french president saying attacks were thwarted in recent weeks. You say it was a matter of time. Its only a matter of time. This attack was inevitable. Theres been a surge over the past year of attacks that were lone wolf. An individual that radicalized on instruction from Islamic State or from one of the al qaeda affiliates or al qaeda itself and what we see is the next level which is a mumbai style attack where you had come ando who were trained and they tried to recruit and now we should have expected this and its difficult to protect against this. Its a soft target not in response another important point not in response to anything the u. S. Has done in the region or west has done in the region. This came after the west on its home turf for cartoons. And talking to an eyewitness who was one of the first to go into the building and see the bodies and blood and trying to move furniture and seeing more bodies beneath that and knowing people did this in cold blood. When you think about the big question where are they now, they were in one car. They ditched that car. Got in another car. Continued on. In europe its very easy to pass borders, trains buses, cars. Thats true. Theres also the other part of it. If they are depending on local communities and other muslims to protect them to hide in then thats when they are most vulnerable. French and german Law Enforcement have very strong ties to these communities and they pride themselves at its outreach and ability to infiltrate fundamentalist groups. These guys clearly slipped through that net but now its one thing to slip in but to slip out again i suspect will be significantly harder because now people are looking for them specifically. I want to say choice of target also sends two other messages. This is not a well known publication to the rest of the world. No matter how small you could a target of terrorism for insulting islam and they have long memories. Theyre doing this for what was done in the past as well as what they think is coming in the future. They want everyone to think theyre not safe under any circumstances. Thank you both very much. Hope youre right. I hope they can find them. American cities on alert right now as well as police are beefing up security here at home. Cnn just spoke with the chief of Homeland Security. You will hear what he says about fears of similar attacks in the United States and as these three terrorists remain on the run, we have more on that getaway car and the forensics investigation. That piece of the puzzle is well under way. Todays attack in paris has resonated all over the world. President obama was briefed by his National Security team and said United States would give france any assistance it needs. I reached out to president hollande of france and hope to have the opportunity to talk to him today. I thought it was appropriate for me to express my deepest sympathies to the people of paris, people of france for the terrible terrorist attack that took place earlier today. We also know that president obama has reached out to the french president regarding the tragedy. Cnn chief Congressional Correspondent dana bash joins me now from capitol hill. I know you talked to jeh johnson, Homeland Security secretary, a short time ago. What did he say . Reporter its very interesting, brooke. He was here on capitol hill to meet with lawmakers more generally about the Homeland Security budget which ill get to after i play what he said about this issue, but he was very eager almost to talk about the fact that this incident this attack in paris, is really a wakeup call for those of us in the United States and around the world about the changing nature of threats. Listen to what he said. Its becoming more and more complex terrorist threat. Its evolving in that there are more affiliates adherence to core terrorists organizations and lone wolf actors actors who may lurk within our society that could strike with little notice commit an act of violence because they have been inspired by things they see on the internet social media, in literal urelit we put out bulletins about what we are seeing in terms of Homeland Security threats. Thats something we do on a routine basis and im sure well do more of that in the shortterm in the coming days. Reporter brooke, i mentioned he was here talking about the budget. That is something thats incredibly imperative to him. He was talking about the changing threats. The Homeland Security department is operating on a budget thats several years old because until the end of last Year Congress has been kicking the can down the road on all government agencies. They passed a new bill that funds everything except for the department of Homeland Security. If you remember its because republicans were kind of holding it in their back pocket to see if they want to use that funding to punish the president for his immigration executive action. This is actually coming due next month and so the Homeland Security secretary said we have got to get not just more funding but new funding because there are new priorities given the nature of this threat and so many others that this department has to deal with. Dana bash thank you very much. Chief Congressional Correspondent in d. C. Were following all of the latest developments out of paris at this hour. The scene of the terror attack. Were getting new information about some online chatter now from extremist sites. Well tell you what theyre saying in the wake of this coming up. My tempurpedic made me fall in love with mornings again. I love how it conforms to my body. With tempurpedic the whole bed is comfortable. Its the best thing we ever did for ourselves. Its helping to keep us young. vo its your year. Treat youself to your best nights sleep with tempurpedic. You are watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Lets take you to paris. These peaceful rallies breaking out across the city and beyond. You have tens of thousands of people gathering for these peaceful protests holding up signs reading not afraid and they hold right there pens. Pens. Symbols of freedom of speech. All of this in response to this deadly cowardly terror attack this morning on french satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. We now know 12 people are dead including the publications editor and top cartoonists who made a living lampoon all religions. It appears that this attack here is in retaliation for cartoons about islam. Police do know they have what they believe is the gunmans car here right there being picked up and taken away. Again, three suspects still on the loose. And right now theres a lot of online chatter about who is behind this attack. Lets begin with lori siegel. We have to be careful about all of this. What are you seeing . You know i actually spoke with a group called flash point security. They go online and they are constantly monitoring terrorist activity and what people are saying whether its isis or al qaeda and i ask what are you hearing online . They sent me to a certain twitter user. They said just check this out. Obviously investigators are going to be looking at everything. One twitter user suggesting some inside knowledge writing the brothers that carried out the terror attack returned safely to bases. Another said await a pledge of allegiance allegiance. And last tweet he said Islamic State acknowledges its responsibility for the attacks on the Charlie Hebdo magazine. Someone responded on twitter saying this isnt official. He said amen to that. The reason that these guys pointed me to him. They said in the past hes had knowledge of insider activity. Obviously french investigators, everyone is going to be looking on line to see if theres anyone claiming responsibility and what to do with those claims to authenticate any of it. It could be so many different groups. Having talked to multiple experts, it could be anyone ultimately coming forward and claiming responsibility. It really just seems too early yet. Sure. On social media this is almost the first place a lot of these people go look because you look at isis and how prominent and how sophisticated with social media and you have to look at al qaeda magazine had put this edit editor who was killed on their top ten most wanted list dead or alive. You are looking at that post now. These are things that these investigators are going to take into account as they try to wrap their head around this tragedy and see who could be behind it. Thank you. Lets stay on this. We can tell you the editors and cartoonists targeted by these terrorists are not strangers to controversy. They have raised eyebrows before with the magazines content sparking being firebombed in 2011 over one of the magazines cover. Joining me from paris, christopher dickey. You have spent many many years covering paris for a variety of publications and we keep seeing these images of People Holding up these pens in paris tonight. Hashtag i am charlie. Whats the sense in paris this evening . You know at the center of this whole debate about islam and radical islam and its place or not in europe is the question of freedom of expression. Its a very complicated question. Right now people want to say we will not be intimidated. We want our free speech. We want our free press. We want to be able to do this without fear of violent retribution like this. You have to understand the flip side of this also is related to antiislamic sentiment in many countries in this continent. We are, in fact what they call the intolerance of the intolerant. Right wing ersers and tens of thousands of people protesting in germany say that islam, all islam, has no place in european society. We see a division now. It will be fraught and dangerous and of course thats exactly what is intended by terrorists when they carry out this kind of attack. Thats the definition of terrorism. We know that the french president said today as we talk about this magazine knowing full well theyve been targets for years, president hollande saying they thwarted multiple attacks in recent weeks and you said attacks like this this is something europe something the United States should be concerned about in the future. How do you mean . Absolutely brooke. You have a situation here where this is a small group of people. Its not a lone gunman. Its not one lunatic taking his grandfathers shotgun off the wall. Its a group of men, two shooters probably one driver who seemed to have had significant military training and real confidence in the way they handled their weapons. I watched the videos from the street and the way they operated i was reminded of the al Shabab Militants who slaughtered these people in the Shopping Mall in kenya not long ago. Its a very very frightening spectacle and the shape of terror to come. A few men armed with heavy weapons who go in to soft targets and slaughter innocent people. They are not always going to choose Something LikeCharlie Hebdo. They may choose Shopping Malls or any crowded place. The only way to fight it is with better and better intelligence but that kind of intelligence begins to infringe on peoples civil liberties. Its a dangerous and unpleasant future that lies ahead of us. Chris, thank you. Next we want to stay on this magazine and explore this closer. What does Charlie Hebdo stand for and what has it done historically really to draw so much attention from critics . Well be right back. Shrimp . Who are you calling a shrimp . Charlie hebdo was a satirical magazine no stranger to controversy over the last several years. They tried to take down politicians and public figures and religious symbols. They took on islamist extremists. Cartoons including those depicting the Prophet Muhammad angered groups but the editor refused to back down as he explained in an interview in 2012. Translator its been 20 years since weve been doing trough provocation and its noticed only when we talk about islam which raises problems in which is a minority. When the Government Asks us not to do any provocation, we have the impression that three idiots who demonstrated in the streets represent all of islam. Its the government who insults muslims by saying that you have to take them as they are. One has to mock them using humor. Disarm them with humor and not give them credit. By taking them seriously and sending riot cops to hold them one takes them seriously. Lets go to london now to our correspondent. I think its important for our viewers in the u. S. Many of whom are unfamiliar with this magazine who are they . This is a magazine brooke that really is known for courting controversy. It was launched in the 1970s and is known for poking fun at all faiths. It wasnt until it depicted the Prophet Muhammad in one of its cartoons that it landed in hot water and islam any depiction of the Prophet Muhammad is considered strictly forbidden. In 2011 its offices were firebombed in connection with one such depiction. The cartoonists refused to break down saying their goal was to laugh at extremism but there were moderate muslims that were upset by some of these depictions as well. The nation is galvanized by pictures of peaceful protests People Holding up pens and online. Theres huge support on social media. Absolutely. Online we see an outpouring of solidarity. Many people using the hash tag je of suis charlie which means i am charlie. Many people making the point that they may not agree with this magazines satire but they certainly want to take a stand for freedom of speech. Let me quote to you one of the tweets we came across here. Its a tweet who quoted voltaire saying i do not agree with what you have to say but ill defend to the death your right to say it. Another person with twitter handle as a muslim i absolutely refuse to apologize for this terrorist act but as a muslim i demand justice for the victims and there are members of the Muslim Community trying to draw a clear distinction. We see an outpouring of support from the newsroom tweeting out a picture of their journalists holding their signs. We hear from cartoonists. David pope tweeting out one of his creations that says he drew first. He also tweeted cant sleep tonight. Thoughts with my french cartooning colleagues their families and loved ones. Really what were seeing is outpouring of grief, outrage and calls for justice. And from leaders as well. Both president of the United States and president of france saying we must continue to defend this freedom of speech. Thank you. Were watching right now as you see video of the aftermath of this cowardly horrendous attack this morning inside the offices of a controversial satirical magazine in paris, Charlie Hebdo. A massive manhunt is under way. They have one getaway car. According to the paris prosecutor earlier today, they jumped into another car and who knows where they could be. Theres a forensic investigation under way looking to find and capture these three individuals to punish them. Let me bring in a former cia counterterrorism analysts and also coauthor of find, fix, finish. Heres my first question. Let me bring up a point that i had with a colleague in a commercial break. He said his fear is that they will find these three individuals but that it could turn into a situation of watertown, massachusetts, in which they found the tsarnaevs but not before a bloody shootout. Is that a real fear here . Certainly a possibility. Lets take the time now almost a decade ago when al qaeda blew up a train near madrid spain, and when police went to raid the apartment complex where perpetrators were they blew up everything and killed a lot terrible terrible conclusion for this. They also might go down without a fight at all because you never know how these things will turn out. What are investigators doing right now . Here you have this happen in paris. This is multiple hours ago. They were in a second car. You know as well as i do its very easy to go from country to country, whether its plane, train, bus, car. What are they doing to find them . Absolutely. Remember this attack has actually happened now over six, seven hours ago. Where can you be in six or seven hours in the paris metro region . You could be in another country. If you were smart you probably had a plane ticket and you probably got on a plane and took off. Its another possibility that they could be sitting in an apartment complex in a neighboring city waiting for the police to show up and having some sort of terrible conclusion kind of what you said before but essentially, if these were professionals and this was a professional hit any way you cut it they probably had an exit strategy. Whether that exit strategy means theyll go out in a blaze of glory or if they blended in and disappeared, its still up for grabs. What about that exit strategy . Because anyone i talk to they said this is clearly, theyre part of a Larger Organization trained, under control, calm watching this whole thing. So listen i dont know if they would have already orchestrated different communities who would then take them in harbor them and help foster their exit but i have to imagine Law Enforcement are going to those different community, correct . To try to get them out. Absolutely. Absolutely. The french i have to say, the French Intelligence Services are top notch and theyre going to turn over every stone. Theyre going to shake every suspect in order to catch these fellows. This was a terrible attack in the heart of French Society e specially against the media and so there will be an outcry in French Society that might even bring down the government if they dont catch these people fast. Aki, stand by with me. Let me bring in Michelle Kosinski who we normally talk about the president with. Shes at a very snowy white house. You were in paris two years ago you interviewed this magazine Charlie Hebdo, Stephane Charbonnier and he was defiant in the face of multiple threats. Right. We heard him say recently in an interview. He said i dont have a wife. I dont have kids i dont each have a car or mortgage. I would rather die standing up than live kneeling down. That really encapsulates his attitude and back in 2012 there were violent protests going on in other parts of the world. Through the middle east there were embassies and consulates under attack and under threat. France closed down embassies in 20 countries at the time and in that environment is when they decided to run the cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. It wasnt because of those cartoons. It was because of an american film trailer that was put out on the internet. So in that environment, Charlie Hebdo, this newspaper put out more cartoons. So the question was okay okay we understand what your newspaper does. We understand the parody but why do it now . And to him, and to his staff that was really the point. That there shouldnt be a bad time to make fun of anything in the form of cartoons in the form of this magazine or newspaper that isnt exactly read all over the world and he felt like that was the time to prove his point, that you can put things out there and there shouldnt be just one group that you have to be particularly sensitive about not offending. He made the point you can make fun of christians and you can make fun of the pope and your world leaders. Which they did, by the way, all of the above. They made fun of that but the only time we hear the name Charlie Hebdo is when they would public from time to time and they have several times over the last decade these cartoons featuring the prophet mohammed. There shouldnt be a time when the world says you need to be careful because they just felt it was ridiculous that you would have to avoid trying to offend a particular group at a particular time. Michelle kosinski thank you, and aki peritz thank you both very much. Just an absolutely stunning interview with this witness i talked to last hour was in the building in paris and works right there, describes the moment after the gun fire and describes the gruesome gruesome scene. Well talk to him after this. French police are hunting three terror suspects right now after this massacre at the office of a satirical magazine this morning in paris and imagine just appearing for work in the morning, moments after this this nightmare that this shooting leaving 12 people dead 11 wounded. I talked to someone who who that happened to someone who was there in this building. This french journalist who works nearby was one of the first people to walk inside and witness firsthand this gruesome scene and he shared with me what he saw. Well, i when i arrived to my office this morning to the Office Building in paris we i saw the face of one of my colleagues who had run down the stairs and he was calling out for help and for people to gather to run up and sort of help as much as we could, so i didnt really understand what had happened so we just ran back together to see what happened in the corridor and my office is across the hall from charlies office and when i arrived i could smell the very strong smell of gunpowder everywhere and we walked in and it was obviously, a very disturbing scene to see how the bodies were on the floor. Some people were crying out for help and someone asked us to sort of help move some of the furniture to make room for the emergency teams that were on their way and some of them were on the scene. So we decided to move a couple of the Office Tables and thats when we thats when i realized that there were more bodies that were under the tables as well people that might have tried to sort of hide from the attackers or you know i have no idea i dont know what happened but so yeah thats what happened and then very very quickly the police came in the rescue workers came in and the place was packed with people so we just decided to withdraw to our offices and to leave room for the emergency professionals to you know to work properly there. As he was describing the gruesome seen he saw this morning, i asked him what was it like the last couple of years to work so closely next to an office that was under attack.
