Fatigues and also what looks to be a bullet proof vest. Other images show terrified employees huddled together. Others forced to take down the security cameras observe ss observing them. Then there are corporations the four killed by coulibaly scattered across the floor. A baby stroller is there a kban abandoned in the aisle. You can see people huddled together in the aisles. All of this unfolds hours before police stormed that market and killed the gunman. Joining me now to talk about this new images. Cnn International Correspondent fred. Theyre tough to look at. They are tough to look at. They tell us what happened in the supermarket. Coulibaly was apparently wearing the bullet proof vest. It appears to be the one he wore in the suicide video he took pledging allegiance to isis a couple of days before that was found after he was killed. The other interesting thing is the stroller standing around. That you wonder why is there a stroller standing around . We know there was a family hiding out in the freezer that we learned about later. It shows how things were in the supermarket, how dire things were in the supermarket. It shows coulibaly standing in front of one of the employees or a customer with the customer showing his hands on the wall. He kept a tight regimen. One of them tried to take a gun from coulibaly and shoot him. That weapon jammed. Coulibaly then shot that person. Thats one of the corpses. This fills in the time line. They tried to take down the surveillance cameras. We know all those people were huddled together in the freezer downstairs. The interesting thing about the cameras. He tried to get them to take them down because he wanted to destroy evidence that might have shown what happened there. He didnt know that the recordings from the cameras apparently were remote. They were recording somewhere else. Everything that happened until then as we see is clearly visible. Somewhere in this time line he forced someone to call the media to get his message out. So fast and so chilling clearly heavily armed and prepared in this attack. Your heart goes out to people inside the store at the time. Absolutely. The interesting thing, he called the media apparently because the media he was recording, one of our affiliates was reporting that no one had died at that point. He had already killed four people. That was the record he wanted to set straight which is outrageous. He wanted everybody to know he killed four people. Its simply evil. We see the bodies on the floor. Thank you for being with us. I appreciate it. Another Major Development in to tell you. Theres a claim of responsibility for the slaughter that happened behind me in the offices of Charlie Hebdo one week ago. We have video deemed authentic by the United States. In this video claim of responsibility a commander for al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula claimed his group made this attack. This al qaeda commander goes on to say, quote we clarify to the islamic world the one that chose the target laid the plan financed the operation, appointed it is the leadership of the organization. So who is this leader exactly that this man on the video is referring to . We believe an war alabamawar who was killed three years ago. Nick peyton walsh has been studying this all day, whats inside it. Nick the kouachi brothers got funding. They were given as much as 20,000 by al qaeda this the Arabian Peninsula when they left yemen in 2011. 20,000. What more do we know about the money trail . Investigators are now pouring into the question. How much of that money remains to fund the attack . Did the relationship continue after the brother or brothers. Its not clear when even though cherif may have traveled in 2011 using his brothers passport. After the brothers left did the relationship with al qaeda and yemen stop . Did they go to france and stop receiving funding having been given target to an attack . Or did it actually turnout they maintained the relationship . Thats what investigators are searching heavily at the moment. Theres other evidence in the video thats quite clear why they wanted the names of their leadership to be associated with the operational side too. They dont claim responsibility for the man you were just discussing coulibalys attack on the grocery store. They say it was coincidence, good fortunate of timing. Terrifying to those that lost people in the attacks. Theyre going to work out how it came to be these people chose to attack on the same day. John . They call everything that happened the blessed battle of paris which is diabolical termology when you think about it. There was a development here. Officials in paris have detained some 54 people were defending or glorifying or condoning terrorism which is against the law here. Specifically what accusations are they facing . Most individual miss relation with those offenses is simply because of suggested links to other individuals and continued investigation into what happened in paris at. People now will be looking to broader link across the world, particularly investigators that are linked to yemen. There are suggestions that marry Cherif Kouachi did travel to syria. Theres the continued search for the partner of coulibaly, hayat boumeddiene. Theres lots of concerns now that others may have been activated in france. Thats what investigators are most concerned about now john. Theyre pulling on threads now to find out what they can. Merely speaking out in terror in france can get you a jail sentence 18 months to seven years. Very interesting now, cracking down on what they call hate speech. Nick peyton walsh, thank you for being with us to talk about these developments today. Brooke, back to you in new york. Thank you so much. Dont go too far. The man that mentored one of the french terrorist is condemning the massacre his former student committed. Now out of prison after a terrorism conviction spoke to tv france 3 network. He says hes a radical cleric that turned one of these brothers spot smoking want to be rapper into a extreme die hard. Weve talked about this. They trained, got together in this one paris park. Today he says he is reformed. Once more he revealed he spoke with Cherif Kouachi all of two months ago, and it was clear to him kouachi had been clearly radicalized. Quote, this interview in french this is what he told part of this network. With him, he always came back on the same subject. Anything to do with combat he was fascinated by that. His understanding of religion was limited to that nothing else. Good report with the neighbor he didnt know of it. The report of the muslim everyday life he didnt know it. The relationship with god didnt interest him. It was all combat that interested him. Now the National Security at fordham law school. Good to have you back. There are those that take this is fixation and turns it to violence. Theres no one answer to that question. There are a couple of things to look for. One, its often something personal that happens, anger, frustration, humiliation. Alien nation from society or something they want to belong to. That becomes a catalyst. Sometimes its opportunity to do something. They see a way to go to a foreign land to fight. Whatever it is. Its hard to predict whats going to happen. Individuals will commit violence given certain circumstances that otherwise might not be violent. Because of your work on this the photos from iraq in 2004 something thats out as far as what apparently inspired the kouachi brothers. That was ten years ago. Right. Ten plus years. For us that may seem like a long time. From the point of view of people in this larger narrative looking at islam or creating a caliphate, these photographs have been potent since the very beginning. This Administration Knows it. Theyve been reluctant to release more of these photographs in recent court challenges. The reason is for these individuals the story isnt over. Iraq is still going on. Guantanamo is still going on. This narrative has been potent and prevasive. Particularly in europe since 2004. Maybe that was part of the anger or whatever word you want to use for these kouachi brothers. When you read their background and hear this legal source understanding what was said from the younger brother in prison in 2005. Apparently at before he was hardened meeting these people that helped in the radicalization process, this source said that he was against forgive me that he was though the drinking and smoking at the time. He didnt want to go to iraq to die there. My question then is if we know theres hard aeningening hardening in prison whats done to keep these people apart . Its been strong throughout the west and strong tradition in france. They understand the threat in france and spain and elsewhere of radicalization in prison. This is something theyre going to look too, how does this happen . Is there a way to stop this . Often in prisons islamic extremist convicts are put together in one way, shape, form. Maybe they need to rethink this. Were going to learn more act this in the daus to come. Thank you. We appreciate it. A young blogger in saudi arabia sentenced to 10 years in prison and 1,000 lashes for insulting islam. After saudi arabia condemned Charlie Hebdo attacks as incompatible with islam. Ive always loved exploring and looking for something better. Thats the way i look at life. Especially now that i live with a higher risk of stroke due to afib a type of irregular heartbeat, not caused by a heart valve problem. I was taking warfarin, but wondered if i kept digging could i come up with something better. My doctor told me about eliquis. For three Important Reasons. One, in a clinical trial, eliquis was proven to reduce the risk of stroke better than warfarin. Two, eliquis had less major bleeding than warfarin. And three, unlike warfarin theres no routine blood testing. Dont stop taking eliquis unless your doctor tells you to, as stopping increases your risk of having a stroke. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily and it may take longer than usual for any bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Those three Important Reasons are why eliquis is a better find for me. Ask your doctor today if eliquis is right for you. At ally bank no branches equals great rates. Its a fact. Answer insulting islam in a blog that his wife says was meant to encourage discussions about faith. Cnn International Becky Anderson joins me on this. When you hear 1,000 lashes be specific. What contactually did this man write . Reporter well the site was called free saudi liberals set up to encourage debate political and religious matters in saudi. Its unclear what he was indicted for. We understand the activities and virtue of police may be discussed. The saudi refused to comment saying its a legal not a political issue. We would have contacted his lawyer to get more detail on the case but he too is in prison for breaking allegiance quote, to the ruler, defending the judiciary and founding unlicensed organizations. You are right to point out, at this point its nearly friday 20 last 11 on wednesday. Hell be lashed again and again 19 consecutive fridays. Canada which offered his wife asylum in 2013, has been also been accused as somewhat lame in condemnations. Vigils there are eld are held. No response from the canadian government. The terror attacks have inspired sympathy for the people of france from all around the world. The attacks are generating anger, fear and also violence against muslims. Here in france there have been dozens of attacks in the last weeks. Theres also been demonstrations across europe. 25,000 people turned out this week by the antiimmigrant group from the german city. Theyre called patriotic europeans against the implementation of the west. This was the 12th and biggest march. The first was in october. They went from 350 to 250 hour. Police said mondays crowd hit 18,000. Critics say the kroupgroup is exploiting the tragedy here in paris. This rally was met by a pro immigrant rally who wanted to make their point. Refugees are welcome here that is what they were chanting. Those are dueling messages clearly now face to face across europe. Were joined by phil black. Phil is in paris. You were at this rally with thousands and thousands of people. I know people in the United States are wondering is this a fringe group of people. When you talk about 20,000 that doesnt sound fringey. Thats a big group. Theres an accomplished neonazi element, far right movement. This is main stream. We saw families parents with children. It was all happy really quite civilized, all relaxed, no threat of violence or anything like. That these people strongly believe islam is a threat to their way of life and threat to german culture. We call them antiimmigration rallies on the one hand. Its not so much immigration. These are antireligion rallies in a way. These are focused against islam and a fear of it to a significant extent. Its the pillar of this movement. Its interesting to note it has taken route in this country in germany in particular in this region where there is a low immigrant population less than 2 . Group of muslims even smaller. The fear is real and concern is very real. What set this is apart from other populist and nationalists theres movements across other parts of europe. What makes this different is theyre able to get huge numbers on the street. This predates the events here in paris. The organizers people speaking to this crowd the other night said events here in paris show they have the right to raise concerns. The question is will it spread to other places in germany and other cities in europe. It has spread to some degree but not the same success. There have been smaller protests under the same name and banner trying to achieve the same goals. Its worth noting the protestors against these guys theyve come out in big numbers too. Big if not greater in some places. What it does represent its not a unanimous view. Theres a split in german society. There is a divide that will not easily be healed. We talk about the european community. Germany is at the forefront. Whatever happens there has changes all over this continent. Brooke . Berman its incredible seeing the memorial behind you. Its been one week now. Each time we talk it continues to grow. John berman thank you so much. Terror attacks in paris have revive memories of the boston marathon. In fact the attorneys for the defendant, tsarnaev could taint potentials in the boston trial thats upcoming. With jury selection underway the defense team in boston was hit with a setback. The trial judge denied the request to delay the case a month. One potential juror who is has been excused described what it was like sitting in that courtroom during the Selection Process and laying his eyes on dzhokhar tsarnaev. He wasnt listening to attorneys or the judge. He was there as he was required to be. All 400 eyes of all jurors were on that defendant the entire time. We will talk to that now excused juror next hour. A lot of parallels are drawn between the kouachi brothers and tsarnaev brothers. Richard gabrielle is a jury consultant and behind todays most emphasis verdicts. How often do judges grant delays in jury Selection Process based upon Current Events . Its extremely rare. It does happen occasionally. Usually those events they delay trials on have to do with the actual events of the trial. A news article is published. The difficulty here the judge grappled with saying although theres comparison thats inevitable with the brothers m booing city wide man hunt the press involvemented did not have to deal with this trial itself. He chose not to delay the trial. What about the judge here . The judge said he has seen the juror questionnaires more than certain an impartial jury will be seated. My question is how can you insure partial alty. So many in boston know someone who knows someone who was there that day. Its one thing to say youre impartial, but its another thing to feel that impartiality. That comes a huge situation. Everybody thinks they can be fair and impartial. Its not an on off switch. People that sat in their living rooms and couldnt go out and experience the lockdown of the city that night, who know somebody involved in that bombing, who knows when a testimony is going to be on the witness stand or somebody is going to come up and victim will be in the audience when that feeling will a rise in them. Its though the something you shelf and sit a side for the entirety of a month long trial. The process of sitting down with jurors and really probing into how theyre going to be able to set things aside and just listen to evidence is a process. Who knows if the judge is going to be able to do that. What about the now excused jurors description of dzhokhar tsarnaev. People are talkwalking in this room to see him. To see his indifference according to this one man and process. Fast forward to the trial, how will his physical presence affect things . Well brooke as you just heard, jurors start making their impressions of the defendant immediately. Its very quick. One juror said he seemed indifferent. Thats obviously not good. You want a defendant to look engaged and appear like they have a defense. If they look indifferent, the juror goes why should i care about him . One appearance aspect that could work in his favor is he looks relatively young, even with the beard. Sometimes that factor by itself may sway jurors to say he might be young, might be impressionable. Its hard for me to somehow vote to end the life of somebody who looks seemingly like a young kid. Im glad you brought that up. These arent just jurors sitting on this high profile trial. This could come to death. Richard gabrielle, thank you. I have got to update my ink. The words radical islam are used to describe what we witnessed in paris. You dont hear that phrase uttered by the white house. The white house prefers a different label not radical islam but violent extremism. We have not chose ton use that label because it doesnt seem to accurately describe what happened. We also dont want to be in a situation where we are legitimatizing what we consider to be a completely illegitimate justification for this violence this act of terrorism. So is this semantics, not using the word islam or muslim to describe what happened here . Or is it an important distinction . Vice president of the Muslim Youth Organization one of the largest organizations in the world, author of the book also. This is tackling one of those tough questions. Cnn political commentator and host of his show 9 00 a. M. East on saturdays. Michael, i want to start with you. You are not pleased with the white house decision not to use the word radical islam or muslim extremism. I think thats probably putting it lightly. I think its dishonest by omission. Nobody is suggesting we describe these terror acts as having been committed by islam. That would be ridiculous. Theyre not committed by islam. Theyre committed by individuals that represent a violent strand of radical a islam. I think to not say so is frankly to be misleading. To me john it would be like discussing pedophile priests but saying dont utter the word catholic. It would be like saying were going to have a conversation about the mafia but never going to mention individuals of italian heritage. I dont like this censorship. I think the censorship assumes if you say these words there will be a revolt among all followers of the islamic faith. Thats as bad as individuals that say in the after math of one of these attacks its representative of the entire faith when its not. Im for transparency or honest say. What do you make of this . Thats a fair point brought up. For us its not a matter of being offensive. I dont take offense if somebody calls it muslim extremism or terrorists. Some do take it forward on other networks and called this islamic attack. So the word terrorism is removed. For us instead of validating the assertion that this is islamic and empowering those groups that claim this is islamic and saying see, this is. We at the muslim youth association, the Worldwide Organization our effort is to save youth from becoming radicalized. We stop it at the core and say if you want to know what islam is no matter what your beliefs, come. Well teach you. Dont get duped into thinking thats islamic. For me the far more offensive thing is manner in which muslims react. When bad things happen we have to be out front in condemning it in word and indeed like the youth association. We hit the streets to condemn these types of acts. We as in all of you, think that muslim moderate not radical i used the word radical islam there Everyone Needs to condemn even if they have no involvement or connection to it . Any time people behave badly, the human decency is to feel bad about those that suffer and to say this is not right regardless of who that is. I dont think its fair to ever expect a muslim to have to apologize or condemn an act especially when we have a 10 20 year track record of doing that every time. Part of us has to be able to push back. The stop the Crisis Campaign is push back on isis and those types of groups to say we need to have a war of ideas to prove that islam does not sanction what youre saying. We need to save muslims from becoming targets of recruitment. Its easy to say any person of any faith, any human can freely speak out about things that a happened here. An interesting quote that talks about this idea that many moderate muslimingss need to go out of their way to speak out. Lets hear what he says. When Ku Klux Klan Burns a cross in a black familys yard, prominent christians arent required. Thats what i and other muslims long for. Michael, your reaction . Well i think its app apples and oranges comparison. Im no expert onkkk thank god. To the extent the kkk ever acted in the name of the bible or under the name of jesus christ or one of the apostles then i think it would be fair to call out the kkk and say these are lunatics who are acting in the name some perverted notion of their faith. As far as i know thats not the basis on which they were conducting themselves. If it were im for disclosure of whatever the facts are. I think unless youre transparent, youre never going to get to the root of the problem and deal with it. Thats what im trying to say. The fact is what youre saying is that people are doing it in the name of islam even if its only in their perverted view of what islam is correct . That is what im saying. If they said theyre going to underact acts of terror in the name of walt whitman, id say weve got to tell that part of the story. To not share that is playing a censorship role which i think is unhealthy precedent for us to set. Im by no means trying to equate what these individuals did at Charlie Hebdo with the fate at large. Lets single them out. Theyre individuals acting with perverted interpretation. Michael and harris appreciate your input here. Thanks so much. Brooke back to you in new york.
