Collins question and we got dana bash, too. The bit about concrete versus steel because this is so much more than the material, right, this is its a much bigger point. I just want to go back to a tweet from the president from five days ago, kaitlan is saying how are you fulfilling your campaign promise, he says five days ago an allconcrete wall was never abandoned as has been reported by the media. Dana, ill start with you on this. Flash forward to five seconds ago when hes like, no, no, no, steel is stronger than concrete, it will be steel and im wondering to you if this might actually be some sort of opening in a negotiation. How do you interpret that . Potentially. And the reason why he sent that tweet initially was not because of media reports but his on outgoing chief of staff saying in an interview that they werent talking about a concrete wall, nor had they been really since for the past year plus. It could be an opening. So much of this is semantics. So much of this is posturing. He understandably just spent the last hour in the ross garduar r trying to get the political upper hand on the argument for the need for a wall, slats, whatever you call it because of national security, tried to make that case with his Homeland Security secretary right there but didnt exactly have the specifics and the answers to why he believes and he insists that it is the crisis that he has been arguing vociferously that it is to the point where he has promoted this partial shutdown. He has promoted the notion of people who work for the federal government not getting paid, people who need the services of these parts of the federal government not being able to use them, im not just talking about museums but talking about irs and others. It could be a potential negotiating tactic but it also is a sliding political scale, which he uses depending on where he is and who hes talking to and what particular flash point of the moment he needs to deal with. Gloria, let me come to you in just a second. Weve got kaitlan now all miked up in the rose garden. We were discussing your question about steel and concrete and campaign promises. I would like to pivot the president confirming saying that the president said that if he needs to, he would keep this government shut down for months or maybe even a year yet i heard him also say he thinks there will be progress, a group is meeting this weekend. Tell me more about that. Reporter brooke, he did say he confirmed that he said this could be a shutdown that goes on for years. That raised obvious questions what about those federal workers who arent getting paychecks . How are they expected to last that long when they cant pay their rent or car payments . The president said they would feel if asked they would feel it was worth it to go without a paycheck. A lot of them are not going to get a paycheck next friday on the 11th if we are still in this shutdown when it gets to that. A few news points, the president said they will have staff continue to work throughout the weekend and work to find a solution for the shutdown, but it did not sound optimistic. The president said it was productive but the message on the other side of the white house from the democrats who emerged from the meeting said it was a contentious meeting and the president threatened to keep the government open for years. One bit of news that might not have made it on camera as they were leaving the president was going back into the oval office, the Vice President mike pence did say he will not take that raise hes scheduled to get overnight, which he and several other cabinet officials are as well, according to those documents that were reported about earlier from the Washington Post and cnn saying into the only the Vice President but self cabinet secretaries and their deputies are scheduled to get a raise of roughly 10,000 overnight. The president was asked if they should withhold those raises from those cabinet secretaries while there are hundreds if not thousands of government workers going without paychecks and working on furloughs. The president said it was an idea they would consider but did not commit to it. But pence saying he would not take the raise hes scheduled to get overnight. The president kept saying the recently renegotiated trade deal with canada and mexico is going to pay for the wall. That doesnt explain why the government is shut down if that is going to pay for the wall. Thats a trade deal that has not been passed by congress yet. That has stumped not only lawmakers but aides here at the white house said they do not understand what the president means when he says that. He also made a few remarks about these negotiations after that twohour meeting with democrats as you were saying about building the wall out of steel because he said he believes hes done so much for steel companies. Of course i raised a question thats not what the president told his supporters he would build on the campaign trail. One of the big parts of that is how that wall is going to get paid. He promised repeatedly mexico is going to pay for it. Now hes saying mexico will either pay through the trade deal that hasnt passed yet but square it with the fact that the government is currently partially shut down over a demand to have the american taxpayer pay for the wall. One more thing i do want to note, he did say daca was part of the discussions here that they were talking about but then he seemed to back off that at the end when he was saying it was upheld by that court of appeals. Thats essentially what he said yesterday. It doesnt sound like something promising. The bottom line is we are no closer to reopening the government after that twohour meeting right now. Kaitlan collins, rolling through those headlines. You are excellent. Thank you, from the rose garden. Gloria, another headline of bypassing congress to build a wall and essentially saying he can, he can and he would if necessary, what did you think of that . Weve heard this threat before. We heard it or we read it in a tweet in october and i think its a threat from the president. He doesnt ever quite pull the trigger on that. I think its something he kind of throws out there to tell the congress, look, i can do this. They would probably say that he couldnt. I mean, one of the headlines here is the democrats came out and said they told the president , mr. President , lets just open the government and then well discuss the issue of the wall Border Security and each said thats not going to happen in pieces, as he put it, we wont be opening the government until this is solved. He also made the case, he never talks about federal workers personally, but he made the case that if he did interview all of them, they would be happy with what hes doing because hes giving them security instead of their paycheck. Id like to take a poll of those people and see exactly how theyre feeling about that. One other interesting thing, which is sort of off topic, was that he toll us that impeachment came up during this conversation because of the congresswoman who spoke about him in a derogatory way and said that he should be impeached and nancy pelosi said to him, according to the president , we are not looking to impeach you. And he said you cant impeach somebody thats doing a great job, which is what he kind of tweeted this morning. And then he veered over to russia again because there was no collusion, et cetera, et cetera. But it was very interesting to me that pelosi kind of volunteered that, to kind of get that off the table. And shes got a lot of democrats who disagree with her. I also think that noteworthy who said in speaking to a group likeminded folks in washington yesterday that roughly the quote was that were going to impeach this mother fer, and when he was asked about the language that she used, he called it disgraceful and this is President Trump were talking about so its a little bit potkettle, it i may. He said you cant impeach someone whos doing a great job. Thats not how it works. Its less likely because impeachment is a constitutional process but its also a political process. And you have to have the political will among the constituents of the members of congress and the house first to pass the articles of impeachment and then of course of the constituents of the senators, more than a majority of them to effectively find him guilty. You can have a president that is doing great things across the board but also has committed what members of congress consider to be Impeachable Offenses. The two are not mutually exclusive. Youre exactly right. But i agree with gloria. In what regard . If it is true that nancy pelosi said to the president were not looking to impeach you, thats not going to be actually all that popular with people a lot of people who were just elected and made her the speaker and voter for her for speaker and got 40 seats. Some of them will be okay with that, especially the leaders of the key committees who are saying, whoa, whoa, whoa, were not giving any credence to the i word, we have to see the Mueller Report and so forth, but David Chalian was saying earlier, 80 of democrats are supportive of impeachment. So thats going to be interesting the way that flies with her constituents. Let me ask the congresswoman who has been patient enough to wait through the last hour. Another freshman congresswoman, the first woman to represent the sixth district in pennsylvania. Congresswoman, welcome and thank you so much for waiting in the wings. Weep get we get a lot of breaking news this time of day. If it is true that nancy pelosi said to donald trump that democrats are not looking to impeach you, if true, how do you take that . So id be happy to answer that question but id really rather talk about what we just saw. If i may, though, can i get you on record on that . The Democratic Party is a very big tent. I was elected by the people of my community to get to the business of the people. The business of the people first and foremost is having a functioning government and right now weve done exactly the opposite of that. And so i definitely am not looking to impeach our president but i am looking for a president who does his job and right now in a job is not being done. What we have just seen over the last hour and a half is a Reality Television show. And we are not in the business of playing with peoples lives. This is reality. And he talked about existential threats at the border. Fund fundamental threats are having food on the table and not to impede their happiness. The president said they have a group that will continue over the weekend. Does that seem like any progress to you . I am grateful for that and i did watch the pres president s conference and havent seen the other coverage. It did seem there were conflicting reports about how that meeting happened and how it transpired. Im interested to see more about that. But it was at least hopeful that well continue to talk over the course of the weekend. I look forward to moving forward on this. I came here to get the business of the people done. Im day two into my job and i really do want to get to the business of why i was elected by the people of my community, which is to worry about health care and make sure we have opportunities and terrific education and wasnt necessarily about building a concrete structure at the southern border. What about, though, yes, heres the but prum did say, he confirmed what we heard from lead are schumer, they contend it was more contentious and lengthy at types, he said that he did hell allow the government potentially to be shut down for months or years. The president said he said that. How would you respond to the president sp. And thats very, very alarming. If were one of those 800,000 people worried about their next paycheck and therefore worried about their rent and their food and their car payments or all of the people who benefit from the services of those 800 these people, would i be very concerned that the government was obstructing the opportunity i had to be an every day citizen. The president does seem to be wavering on his wall or at least his description of it going all the way back to his cam pan. You dont have to call it a wall, you can call it steel fencing. Does this help the case for your party . I actually was fascinated by the way he sort of meandered through his conference and seemed to be wandering from one conversation to another and one set of words to another and i definitely thought i heard some sort of a movement on his part by talking more about steel. I dont know that that necessarily changes anything in the conversation, which first and foremost we have a responsibility to the people who are here to have a government that is working. And right now i come into the congress with a government that is shut down. So im hearing you correctly and then well head off, you did hear an opening in the president talking about steel that could be a potential opening for democrats in negotiations . I dont have any other way to see it when its clear that he has changed the conversation than some sort of an opening. Congresswoman kristy houlahan, good luck. Thank you. I look forward to speaking to you more. You look at the big board, stocks have been soaring, not just on the jobs front but also how the fed chair responded to the president s recent criticism of him. You will hear that next. President trump moments ago touting todays jobs numbers, employers added 312,000 jobs in the month of december and right now the dow, pretty gang busters, up 700 points here on the news but theres Something Else giving stocks a boost. Frank talk from the Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell who said he would not resigned if asked to by the president. Trump has repeatedly criticized powell and the fed for raising Interest Rates saying, quote, it is the only problem with the u. S. Economy. That didnt stop powell from answering questions about trump in a Panel Discussion today. Theres been discussion of a facetoface meeting between you and the president. If invited, would you accept that kind of invitation made . I have no news on that. Nothings been scheduled. I would say meetings between president s and fed chairs do happen. I cant think of any fed chairs who didnt eventually meet with a president. Again, nothing has been scheduled. Cnn Global Economic analyst rana froohar is about us. It not common that you see the fed chief making any comments in the ballpark. Its completely extraordinary. I cant think of a comparable example. And powell was absolutely right to say, look, im doing my job. First of all, a president in order to fire a fed chair would have to have cause. There is no cause here. The president has complained about the Federal Reserve raising Interest Rates, it doing that because weve had a lot of strong numbers, theyre trying to keep the stock market from overheating and keeping inflation low. Hes doing his job. What about the jobs report numbe numbers today . They are strong numbers. The president comes out and touts the strong numbers and says the fed shouldnt be raising Interest Rates. When you have a stronger economy, the fed has to start moving us towards more of a normal monetary policy. Weve been in a really easy money environment for ten years now. Weve been in recovery for ten years. It time to start get back to normal. Rana, thank you very much. Thank you. Let talk more about the notable conference that took place at the white house. Julie pace, one of the most noteworthy bits is the president said he would bypass congress to build a wall if he needed to. What did you make of that . It does raise the question of why he wouldnt just do that and open up the government if he does think thats a viable option. Im sure there are a lot of federal workers who say why dont you go ahead and do that. The reality of the situation is that working through congress, going through the legislative process and the funding process is generally the preferred option because you dont have to tap emergency funds and it does codify what youre seeking. But he doesnt seem to have a plan at this point, a viable way to get what he wants from congress, especially now gnaw have democrats in charge of the house. His best opg wtion was before t new year when he had republican control of congress. April ryan asked about eminent doe ma eminent domain, suggesting land can be taken for the sake of his bored a border wall. Correct me in im wrong, that will not sit well with republicans. Its a very controversial idea. Youve seen a lot of discussion on this. Its not something that people, including the president s own party, favor. You would see a lot of backlash i think along the border in some of those communities. But the president its interesting, he cops at thmes a not just from the perspective of a president but from the perspective of a real estate executive a landlord. A landlord, who have sought to use or take advantage of eminent domain. You saw that side of him really come through when he was touting that possibility in that news conference. What about just lastly and i was talking to the freshman congresswoman about this now what seems like a break or waiver on concrete wall versus steel. She said shes choosing to see it potentially as an opening for negotiations. Do you see it that way or is this just because this is his normal sliding scale on positions depending on the day . I dont think we know yet. I think the president certainly is not going to get everything that he initially has said that he wanted, the full funding for a concrete wall seems all but impossible at this point. So somehow if lawmakers and the president are going to come to some kind of deal here, they are going to have to give him something he can tout as a success to his supporters, who really do want some kind of wall. So maybe the way that you come up with that opening is to move it from being a concrete wall to something that is steel or its see through or some type of other structure beyond what the president has initially been talking about here. Whether he is willing to actually give some ground i think is a little unclear and will probably depend on how democrats would choose to frame any kind of agreement as well. Both sides are going to be looking for some way to walk out of this and look liar theyre winners. They have established a group. We know theyre at least continuing the conversations into the weekend. We can choose to see it as hopefully a good sign. Julie pace, thank you so much. Good to see you. Coming up next here, a freshman congresswoman making all kinds of headlines today for calling President Trump a, quote, mother fer in talking about his potential impeachment. After an historic day for women on capitol hill, newly sworn in democratic congresswoman rasheda talib is facing major backlash after saying this about President Trump at a major victory party. When your son says, mama, bullies dont win and i say, baby, they dont because mama is going to go in and impeach the mother fer. You dont impeach someone when theyre doing a good job. Her comments were disgraceful. This is a person i dont know. I assume shes new. I think she dishonored herself and she dishonored her family, using language like that. Scott generalin generalingen back with us. Simone, starting with you, i want to take this in two parts. I want to take the congresswomans word choice first. What did you make of that . Folks may not know, she represents the 13th district in michigan, which represents detroit and wayne county. Part of the during her came they said she was too rash and not befitting of the temperament of a members of congress. I say that to say the comments this we saw from congresswoman talib yesterday will be fodder for her opponents in what is sure to be a primary challenge in the 13th Congressional District of michigan. That being said, i dont have e any children, if im blessed to be a mother, i wouldnt talk to my kids that way. She said she used the mfer in terms of her son. If she wants to curse, she can curse and any other woman if they would like to curse, they can curse. Talking about her temperament and what she had to say, donald trump has said way worse. For him to say it was disgradi disgracef disgraceful, i made that point a while ago. But there will be people in her district who use anything he says as fodder for request they should take her on. If the black vote wasnt split in the 13th Congressional District, she wouldnt have been elected anyway. This is going to continue to come up in detroit. Scott, what did you think of her words . Im not particularly offended by salty language. I thought it was noteworthy that she was bragging about having used that language in answering a question about our nations Political Affairs to her own child. I think a lot of people probably feel the way she does. In cnns own exit polls, nearly 80 of democrats said they want to impeach the president. Im sure they say this in nebraska. You cant hide whats inside. Democrats want to impeach the president. Now, she did it in saltiers terms. I thought it was weird that she said i am saying this to my child. So, look, a lot of folks in politics use salty language, trump does, a lot of people do. I thought the im talking to my children was frankly strange. Were all on the same page in how you speak to your children, but her message, isnt that feeding into the republican n narrative, these freshmen rolling up thinking impeach, impeach, impeach. Democrats did not run on impeach. They ran on putting a check on this president and doing their job, on legislating, on executing oversight. I think thats the real reason why many Top Democrats and political operatives today were so concerned with congresswoman talibs comments. Every time a democratic member of the house of representatives uses the term impeachment, it means the entire Political Press corps will be talking about impeachment and it puts all of the other House Democrats in that caucus having toa answer fr the words of one member. That is a struggle that new democrats coming into the 116th congress will have to deal with. Theyre just not activists anymore, theyre legislators who have to deal on a team. If you take the president at his word, scott, the president in talking about this conversation he had with Speaker Pelosi and the other democratic members, he says that nancy pelosi straight up told him we are not looking to impeach you. I dont know how that will sit with some democrats, but what but thats not what she said. We cant say, we werent in the room. Nancy pelosis deputy chief of staff has tweeted. I asked him myself. He said that donald trump opened the meeting talking about impeachment in his opening comment and Speaker Pelosi responded and said were here to today to talk about reopening the government, were not here today to talk about impeaching you, were not here today to impeach you. Donald trump is a master of trying to manipulate folks to believe a conversation was one way when it was really Something Else. I think if i believe drew hammel he says thats the characterization of the meeting and Speaker Pelosis comments and i agree with her. Today we need to get the government reopened. Its 14 days its a different interpretation than what we heard from the president well, hes a liar, brooke. Those are my words, not yours. Hes a liar. Scott . Most of the new freshmen definitely want to impeach the president. Most of the activists and people who voted in the midterm want to impeach the president , 6. 5 million democrats have signed a petition to impeach the president. If nancy pelosi thinks she can tamp this down and keep itburne. These people are desperate to impeach donald trump. They will find something in the m Mueller Report no matter what it says among other things. This is going to come up again and again and again because these folks who went to congress reflect the people who voted for democrats in the midterm and the democrats spoke loud and clear, we want impeachment, were going to be talking about it for two straight years. Democrats did not run on impeachment. Simone, read cnns own exit polls. People can say whatever they want in the exit polls about what they feel. Thats not what democrats ran on. And i would like to note an Impeachable Offense, what happens the house of representatives decide is an Impeachable Offense at any given time. If we want to just be frank. Bill clinton was impeached for a blow job, lying about a blow job. Republicans and democrats talk about impeachment but democrats today and every other day until the government is open want to be talking about reopening the government. Why dont yall want to talk about reopening the government, scott . Whats the problem . Id love to reopen the government. The president wants to reopen the government, the democrats want to reopen the government. Its a matter of how the heck theyre going to do it. Lets hope this gets back open, 800,000 people not working right now. Simone and scott, thank you and were going to leave it. Thank you very much. Lets get you back to our breaking news here. President trump telling Democratic Leaders he is prepared to keep the government cl closed for months and for years. More than 800,000 employees impacted by this, so many struggling to just pay their bills, living off of savings. And be open with your doctor about anything you feel. Physically, and emotionally. Body and mind. Cigna. Together, all the way. Thats better. We are two weeks exactly into this Government Shutdown and the president just said he is prepared that it could last for months or even years. His words will likely add to the anxiety felt by the hundreds of thousands of federal workers affected, obviously they like the rest of us have bills to pay, mouths to feed and some have actually used the word pawns, as in thats how they feel, bargaining chineps in thi big are plger political gain. Terry, welcome sir. Nice to you have on. Thank you. Glad to be here. Political chess game, pawns, hostage is what we heard from chuck schumer. You tell me how you feel through all of this. Used. This has nothing to do with federal employees. The president taking the position that he wants a wall and then furloughing us in order to get it, thats very insulting. It is very possible that they could have their separate discussions about building this wall and 800,000 employees be at work. But to just carve us out and to use us till he gets what he wants, thats very hurting and very insulting to the average federal employee. What about just in terms of pennies, nickels, dimes. I know this is really hard for single parents. Are you spending your savings because of this . Yes. I mean tell me more well, i mean, let me say this. I speak for some 750 federal employees thats within my chapter. We have single parents, parents i spoke to a parent today whose daughter tuition is about to become due. People would have to dip into their savings because there is no paycheck. Now the question becomes how long must this go on. You have parents with more than one, two children within the house. It is a huge impact when people are uncertain about when were going to return to work, how long theyre going to have to continue to dip into their savings in order to make ends meet. People being confronted and faced with mortgages becoming due, those who dont own a home, rent, car payments, just every day living. Thats impacted by the mere fact that we are now unemployed, no paycheck coming in but guess what, the bills dont stop because were furloughed. No, they dont. No, they dont. Its so important for everyone to hear stories like yours. I was talking to you briefly in commercial break so when we were listening to the president last hour answering a bunch of questions from the white house reporters, he was asked about landlords, essentially asked, mr. President , would landlords be would you ask landlords to be more lenient on folks like you, terry, federal employees whose paychecks are obviously zero at the moment and he said, yes, that he would encourage landlords to be nice and easy. To even ask an employee to approach his or her landlord, its an insult. Mm. We should not have to do that because employees themselves have nothing to do with him wanting the wall built. And for him or anybody else to ask us to go make a deal in order to keep a roof over our heads, thats an insult. Unless youre living with mom and dad, why is a landlord maybe some landlords, bless them, would say sure but i dont know if the president has that kind of control over all the landlords who may give you all a deal. Let me end on this because obviously this is both democrats and republicans, you know, neither side seems at this point willing to budge, what would you say to them right now . What i would say to them is this we should be taken out of this war between the parties. We didnt start it, its not our fault, and we should not be held accountable and we should not have to suffer and face these challenges that they are actually presenting for us as federal employees. There are the president s concern is about getting construction for his wall when in reality is there is destruction within the homes of employees who cant pay their bills. So he wants construction and as a result of that he is causing destruction. Terry scott, thank you, sir, for speaking up. Thank you. We are getting some breaking news now on the russia investigation. Brooke, it means its going to continue without any disruption. The chief judge had approved the special counsels request to extend this grand jury by another six months. It was initially seated in july of 2017 for 18month term. That term was set to expire in the coming days. And so by the judge now saying he would extend the grand jurys seating for another six months, which he can do under the federal laws, if there is substantial public interest. So now we know that the grand jury investigation will continue. And this grand jury has heard all of these cases, these indictments that we know about now from Robert Muellers investigation, as well as heard a lot of witness testimony weve seen circling around roger stone. So its pretty important this grand jury has given this extension. It means this investigation is continuing, brooke. Got it. Ka Kara Scannell, thank you for that. The tale of two meetings.
