With the Associated Press about the conditions in this facility. It was afterwards that 250 children were transferred, taken into hhs care. They identified shelters and according to cbp that freed up enough space to bring back 100 kids into the same facility. The things we heard are really hard to talk about, brooke. Kids sleeping on the floor with no mattresses, kids showing up in an Interview Room with dirty onesies. Basic things like toothbrushes, toothpaste. These are conditions that was part of government accountability. For 20 years shes done these types of visits and said it was the worst conditions shes ever seen. I asked if there was any concern about Public Perception of them moving these children back. He simply said, no, i asked him if theres any Additional Services the answer to that was also no. Well talk more about these conditions with my next guest. Clara long is a researcher. Among the group that visited that Detention Center for kids. She co wrote this opinion piece for cnn. Com about what she observed. Thank you for being with me, clara. I want to ask you about the gutwrenching conditions. 100 of these kids have been taken back to this facility. Its worrying, but i have to tell you, the issue isnt clint or not chin the. The issue is Border Patrol custody. As the government as much as admitted in Court Arguments last week, are harsh, and theyre not appropriate for children. So whether its in clint or whether its in another Border Patrol station, all along the border. Children need to be transferred out, released and reunified or sent to shelters. We could ask children to speak with us in Interview Rooms. I spoke to children who were dirty, they had not had opportunities to take a bath. They were noticeably, had mucus stains or mud, many of them. Most of them are wearing the same clothes they came in 2, 3 weeks almost a month before. They were not eating well, the same bland food day after day. The most worrying part was that little kids had no adult supervision, they were just being cared for by the older kids that happened to be in the cell with them. How do the older kids even know how to take care of 2 and 3yearolds. Right, i mean, we talked to a 15yearold at one point. The 4yearold that im taking care of. An 8yearold was trying to take care of him before. She didnt know how to do that. I took over, because i know how to take care of kids. I think that theyre just sort of coming together and trying to do the best they can. But the situation is dire. And its not just clint, it is the fact of having what i understand to be, at this point still 1,000 unaccompanied kids in Border Patrol custody. Tell me, i read about youring the of was it a second grade little girl who had a bracelet who said u. S. Parent on it . Tell me about that, and the phone number that went along with it. This little 7yearold came into the Interview Room, and she was really quiet had she came in, and we sort of just started a conversation with her, and one of the things i asked, one of the first things i asked was, who did you cross the border with. She said my aunt. And she dissolved into tears, into this sort of wailing cry that she really couldnt get any words out through. And she had this bracelet on that had in permanent marker the words u. S. Parents and a phone number. I called and we spoke with her parent who said he had no idea where she was being held. And as i said in the piece, some of the most emotional times during this visit came witnessing these kids talk to their parents after being held. And talking to the parents who were desperate and so grateful to have some news about where they were. So cbp, i have to say that, theyre disputing some of the things you describe. They say they do have sufficient soap and they do have toothbrushes and diapers, and Young Children are not being tasked with taking care of toddlers and infantses ayou described. Is it possible they have corrected course since you were last there . I find it difficult to believe. When the kids say we brush our teeth every five or six days, we have to throw away the toothbrush when were done because its contra banged. This has been a question of lack of will to provide a humane, safe and sanitary environment for kids. Why are they allowed to brush their teeth every 5 to 6 days . Great question. I cant answer that, i cant tell you, all i can tell you is what the kids told me, is that when at the time they were allowed to take showers, they got a hygiene kit to brush their teeth. You cant have contraband in the cells. Federal law states that minors can only be held up to 72 hours. You heard from kids that are there three, four weeks. Absent exceptional circumstances, they can only be held for 72 hours. This is an exceptional circumstance . Right. So that justifies them holding these kids for weeks at a time, because they dont have space in shelters. If you look a little more closely, you can see that this is actually a crisis of the governments own making. They have slowed down the rate at which children leave the office of refugee reset elment Detention Centers and shelters, and they have also thats basically created a backup of getting kids out of Border Patrol facilities and into these other facilities where the reunification starts. Theyve also been separating many children, especially Young Children from primary caretakers who may not be their biological parent but are people who have raised them and who with whom their primary attachment is made. Got it. We can read your whole account, cnn. Com. Kara, thank you very much. We have to get to some breaking news in the escalating tensions between the United States and iran. In the days after iran shot down the u. S. Drone, the u. S. Carried out a major cyber attack on a Militia Group sponsored by iran. Lets go to Barbara Starr at the pentagon for us. What did the u. S. Do, barbara . Hi, brooke. Why this Militia Group, they have access to advanced weapons. They operate inside iran as well as syria, and iraq, and with those advanced weapons, always concerned that they are about to launch more attacks. What we know is, on last thursday, when the president called off those u. S. Air strikes against iranian targets. He had authorized cyber strikes. And cyber strikes against this Militia Group. What they were going after was their communications network, that tied them all together and gave them the ability to communicate among themselves. Cyber is something that of course keeps u. S. Troops safe, you have no pilots at risk, but its a dicey business, because a lot of imtoos you dont want to stop communications so you know what theyre up to. This time the president approved it, and its something that one can expect to continue to see the military do in a classified fashion. Go after its adversaries in cyberspace. The pentagon watching carefully these very adamant statements by iran today, noting the president s talking, that if iran were to attack the u. S. There would be obliteration. The pentagon hopes it doesnt get back to where it was last week. Barbara starr, thank you very much. The Climate Crisis has prompted warnings and global protests. Intensifying hurricanes to devastating droughts. In oregon, the Climate Crisis has prompted all of the republican state senators to walk out of the capitol. And in some cases, flee the state. Just so they can avoid voting on a bill about it. Before you ask, no, this is not a headline from the onion, and get this, it is not the first time Oregon Lawmakers both democrat and republican have pulled this kind of stunt. Cnn politics and editor at large is in washington, chris cillizza, how did we get here . Whats the apb on these senators . Good to see democracy working well. Theres something called a quorum in every legislative body. There has to be a minimum number of elected officials in the chamber itself in order to do any official business including voting. The issue is not whether if these 11 people voted against this bill, which would effectively cap Greenhouse Gas emissions, it would still pass, if there was any vote, it would pass, there are enough democrats in the oregon state senate. What they are doing is trying to essentially go back 30 years in basketball North Carolina had the four corners offense, there was no shot clock. Once they got ahead, they would hold the ball. If the other team holds the ball, they cant win. Thats whats happening here, the legislative sessio ends june 30th, if they can stay out of the chamber and the state police have called and said, hey, wed like to have you come back, theyve not gone and gotten many of them in republican friendly idaho, by the way, this bill democrats are saying its probably dead. One other quick thing you mentioned, it happened before this year, in may these same republicans walked out because they wanted they were upset about a tax cut bill that was in the legislature. It worked out then because the governor and democrats wanted to find compromise because they had all these other legislative priorities coming down the pike, including this Climate Change bill. Now theres nothing left in the agenda except this Climate Change bill. Which means democrats have no real leverage to bring them back. And theyre probably not going to do it. Democrats have done this by the way, too brook in oregon, so its not just republicans this is not how a healthy democracy works. I think he with can all agree that hiding in another state is not what our elected officials should be doing. Yeah, theyre not in washington, though. And im going to explain why in a second. Right now, lets turn to the democrats vying for the white house. Were learning more about what the candidates are doing to stand out, for some it involves watching debates of old, while others are taking note of how body language may be perceived on camera,er os are getting ready to defend their records and if necessary, attack those of their rivals. Representative inslee is one of them. You hit the stage tomorrow night. How are you preparing . Im preparing by listening to the people of florida who are at ground zero of the Climate Crisis. I was at the everglades yesterday where the Scientific Community told us that sea water intrusion is not only destroying the everglades, but jeopardizing the Drinking Water for about 6 million floridians. Today i was in the little haiti neighborhood of miami, where essentially climate refugees of people who live on the coastline whose homes are now being flooded are having to go buy property uphill, sort of dispossessing people of lesser income who live on a little higher ground. I know that this is the focus of the campaign. You have to give me something, are you watching tape, thinking of body language . Are you thinking of attack lines . Whats running through your mind here the day before . Just telling our story that we know this is not the Climate ChangeClimate Change is not a problem. It is an emergency, and whats going through my mind is how to articulate both my experience which has been vast and successful in washington creating 100 clean energy bill. Our plan our vision statement for 8 million new jobs. Thats been called the gold standard. Most importantly, to articulate my level of commitment, im the candidate, the sole candidate who has made a pledge to the United States. Experience and commitment is what we need, much more than stunts, like what is going on in oregon, to defeat the Climate Crisis. I want to ask you about that in a second. The Vice President refused to say Climate Change is a threat during this interview with jake tapper, heres a clip. Do you think human induced Climate Emergency is a threat to the United States. Have i will tell you is it a threat . Do you think its a threat, man made Climate Emergency is a threat . I think the answer to that is going to be based upon science. Well, 9 science says yes. Well, theres many in science that the Science Community for your own administration. I got it. At noaa, at the dni say it is. What weve said is were not going to raise utility rates. You dont think its a threat . I think were making great progress reducing carbon emissions, america has the cleanest air and water in the world, were continuing to use thats not true. We dont have the cleanest air and water in the world. Jake tried, the Vice President wouldnt go there. Governor inslee, your reaction to that . Well, if he was here, id i is a, mike, you need to wake up and smell the carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide pollution is not only the highest in american history, its the highest in our time on earth. And it is maddening to me, and we ought to be angry about this that we have people like marcia moss, a woman i met, whose mobil home was incinerated in a horrendous forest fire, where 80 plus people lost their lives in california. We have the Vice President of the United States refusing to help the victims of this crisis. Its maddening to me that the farmers in the midwest have a Vice President who is abandoning them as theyre being drowned. They deserve better. They deserve someone that will be willing to buck the coal industry. This is an admission station totally owned by the fossil fuel industry. We need a leader such as myself, who will look those people in the eye and say, this wont do any more. Were not going to shell out 20 billion for your goodies any more. Were going to build an economy and put 8 Million People to work. Thats what America Needs and im up to that challenge and that progress. I want to move on to whats happening in oregon. You heard chris is a liz saturdays reporting. You tweeted theyre not welcome in washington what do you make of this . Would you order police to track them down . If we had the authority it would be appropriate to help my friend kate brown, who is showing leadership dealing with the Climate Crisis. This should not be a partisan issue, it is both republicans and democrats whose homes are burning down in california. It is both republicans and democrats today in miami whose homes are being flooded. Having to pay taxes by the millions of dollars to raise aid. The 8 Million Clean Energy Jobs that are there for the taking these stunts are most immature and we need to do what my state has done raise the minimum wage. Develop the First Public Health option in the United States, these are all things ive been able to achieve leading my state. We have to unify against the thing that threatens our very existence, thats the Climate Crisis. Well be watching for you tomorrow night. Thank you so much. Good luck. Thank you. He was having multiple affairs with lobbyists, staffers and using Campaign Money to pay for them. Our crime and justice reporter has been reading these documents, whats going on . Serious and salacious violations going on this week. In the case of embattled representative, duncan hunter. You remember hunter already under tremendous scrutiny, when these charges came down last year, charges of wire fraud, Campaign Finance allegations. And allegations that he was spending Campaign Funds on extravagant vacations with his wife and family as well as some pretty large bar tabs. Now some new allegations that add to the governments case. There are many in this filing. According to the filing, hunter paid over 1,000 for a ski weekend in many i aresort outside of lake tahoe with a lobbyist who he had known professionally here in d. C. , he spent those 1,000 out of his Campaign Funds. He also used Campaign Funds in this affair to pay for food and beverages that he would bring to the womans house when he was living with her for a period of time. A second affair, and there are five separate affairs outlines in this filing. A second one allegedly taking place between one of his own congressional staffers occasionally spending nights together in their Congressional Office according to the filing. And he took her out on dates on the Campaigns Fund one day at a d. C. Bar, well known for its indoor minigolf. They spent over 200 on food and drinks at the bar. Prosecutors arent putting this out there to be salacious. They are trying to make a case to the judge they should be allowed to include these allegations in this the case theyre making against hunter in the september trial. Hunter has pleaded not guilty to the charges. And weve reached out for comments on the affair allegations. As we wait for comment this season the about hunter, this is about his wife, right . His wife was facing federal th chas, recently changed her plea to guilty. That was the Big Development this week her wife changed her plea from guilty to not guilty. Spending thousands of dollars on a trip to italy. And large bar tabs in d. C. When she changed her plea last month, that was a stunner, it meant she was cooperating with prosecutors, could be helping to build a case against her husband, it was also significant because initially hunter had attempted to kind of put some of the blame for the charges on his wife. She held a role in his campaign. She was his campaign manager. And she had im not guilty, im pleading guilty and she expressed remorse when she did change her plea earlier this month at a court hearing. Thank you very much. In the mean time, outgoing press secretary Sarah Sanders last day is friday. And her replacement has just been announced . Stephanie grisham is moving from the east wing to the west wing. Sarah, not only will grisham serve as press secretary. But she will also be chief of communications at the white house, yes . Thats right, brooke. The scope of responsibilities that grisham will have will be much broader than what Sarah Sanders did, she will have three jobs, she will be the White House Press secretary, the White House Communications director and she will retain her role as spokeswoman for the first lady. She will fill a void left by bill schein when he departed as White House Communications director months ago. The role of press secretary has changed dramatically under Sarah Sanders, we have not seen a White House Briefing in more than 100 days now. Its become a much more inward looking role as sara sanders became more of an adviser, she was much less visible in the later days of her tenure. Grisham is someone who has been with the trumps since the days of the campaign. She will accompany the president to japan and south korea with, later in this week, that will be a big first test to the role of press secretary Sarah Sanders, will be leaving friday. Grisham accompanied the president to camp david over the weekend. Its not clear when the official job offer was extended, brooke, but melania announcing that today. The attorney for the estranged husband of the missing connecticut mom, the lawyer is now suggesting that 50yearold Jennifer Dulos may have staged her own appearance as in gone girl style. Gone girl popular novel turned film about a woman who faked her own death and framed her husband for it. His legal team found a novel the missing woman was working on, she had the imagination, means and motive to just disappear. Her family rejects that theory, calling it false and irresponsible. Shes been missing for more than a month. Her estranged husband and his girlfriend pleaded not guilty to th chas of tampering in if her disappearance. Arri arriva, i know youve heard a lot of things as a lawyer, but the notion that this gone girl theory, what do you make of that . I would call this speculative. She staged her own disappearance to frame him . To make it appear as if he assaulted and murdered her. I think the defense has a lot of holes to fill in, there are are a lot of holes in this theory, her family members have said this book was written over 17 years ago, even before the movie gone girl was released. And that the book has nothing to do with the plot in that very popular movie, that the book is really about a woman in her relationships and journey and finding herself. And you cant dismiss the evidence. Police have physical evidence that suggests that jennifer was the victim of some kind of violent assault in her home. Theres blood evidence and other evidence thats really damning. By the way, her estranged husband is not only a suspect in her disappearance. Hes in this custody battle for the five kids this couple shares. Do you think this unusual legal strategy, essentially, as you said, hes the victim, does it help or hurt her chances of getting custody of the kids . I dont think it helps his chances at all, getting custody of the children. The Family Law Court is going to be looking at the best interest of these children before they make any determinations that the exhusband can have custody of these kids. And if if hes trying to make not trying to, but if his lawyer is making these damning theories and accusations, i dont think a Family Court Judge is going to take kindly to that. This is a devoted mother of five. Shes involved in the lives of her children, she loved her children, she had a rigorous schedule and routine with respect to them. To suggest that shes somehow made this up to frame the exhusband who by the way, she made accusations that she was afraid of him, he was violent and she had concerns about him. I dont think this is a Winning Strategy if youre trying to get custody of your kids. Shall we go to heres the president. Yes, i am. Im very concerned. And theyre much better than they were under president obama by far. And were trying to get the democrats to agree to really give us some humanitarian aid, humanitarian money. That is a fair question. I appreciate that question. Im concerned, its in much better shape than it ever was. A lot of these Young Children come from places that you dont want to know about, the way theyve lived, the way the poverty they grew up in. But with that, if we get this bill signed, well be able to do it, the democrats dont want to sign anything, and now i think theyre going to probably sign this, from what i understand, i call it humanitarian aid. This season the even about border, you see the numbers are way way down, mexico has been helping us a lot. They have very strong immigration laws, they are moving 15,000 people or 16,000 people to our southern border and they move 16,000 troops to their southern border which is pretty incredible. A lot of signs are coming out with the cartels and all the bad folks, the coyotes as they call them, and all the bad people that are bringing Young Children and taking advantage its a form of slavery what theyre doing to Young Children. A lot of that is stopping now because of what were doing and whats happening on the border. So i just want to thank mexico, theyve done a great job, we appreciate what theyre doing, hopefully they can keep it up, its very important. They have very very mexico has very very powerful immigration laws, they can do things, our laws are so bad. What we would like to do, and ill do it right now officially, is ask democrats to give us help on asylum. Help on all of the loopholes, the horrible loopholes that could sign over a period of years that dont allow us to do what we should be able to do. We need the votes of democrats, and i think very importantly, because our economy, you heard larry kudlow because our economy is so strong, it could be the strongest in the history of our country. People want to flow up to the United States, because you cant do it that way, you have to do it legally. You have these massive numbers of people trying to get into the United States because of the economy. Because weve done so good. But thats one of the problems with doing well, everybody wants to come in. Ten years ago, five years ago, four years ago, they didnt want to come in, now they want to come in. That cant happen. As far as the wall is concerned, the wall is heavily under construction. The army corps of engineers is doing a great job. Were doing a lot of wall, we hope to have 400 miles of wall finished by the end of next year. Did you ask john sanders to resign . Do you know why he is leaving . No, i knew there were going to be changes there, we have made good changes. Were moving people around to different locations. The game has changed a lot because of what mexico is doing. Were doing things we wouldnt be able to do where. The problem with our Border Patrol, they are phenomenal people. But the laws are so bad with catch and release, the visa lottery, chain migration. The laws are so bad, and the asylum resumes are so bad, that our Border Patrol people that are so incredible, arent allowed to do their jobs. Because mexico is now for the first time in 50 years helping us, and we really appreciate it, were able to make certain changes we wouldnt be able to make before. Steve, did you have a question. The back and forth with the leader of iran this morning, what message did you want to send to him . There is no message. Ill tell you what the message is, when theyre ready theyll have to let us know. When theyre ready theyll let us know, very simple. Ready to do whatever, doesnt make any difference, whatever they want to do, im ready. Do you think this economic employment of the middle east without israelis or palestinian officials attending. Whats your strategy goingforward well, we want to get support, and we have to get economic support, because the palestinians dont have money, and we have to help the palestinians with some money, because they dont have, and one of the groups that you get are some of those countries in the middle east that do have money. So they are going to play a role in the peace plan. And well see what happens, we had a little bit of a set back in the election from in israel, as you know, is i guess the result is somewhat mixed, now theyre going to do it again, thats another doover, unfortunately, but well see what happens, i mean, well see what happens with that election, but its an early process, we expect other people to help out. Because again theres no money. And some people dont have money, and if they dont have money, its going to be very hard. We want people to be able to live and live well. You did not ask sanders to resign . I dont think ive ever spoken to him, actually. We have some very good people running it. I dont know anything about it, i hear hes a good man, a good person. I dont know him, i dont think ive ever spoken to him. Can you tell us about the decision to make Stephanie Grisham your new press secretary. Shes been with me over the years. Shes worked for the first lady, she loves her, i think shes been just incredible, very talented. And i hear so many people, who do you like . A lot of people wanted the job. A lot of people. Who do you like, so many people said stephanie. And shes here, she knows everybody. She actually gets along with the media very well, as you know. A lot of the folks in the media like her very much. And i think shes going to be fantastic, shes going to do a great job. I offered her the job this morning and she accepted. The first lady is very happy for her. Its a big job. A very big job. But we think stephanies going to do a fantastic job, hogan is going to be with her. Hogan is one of the people that recommended heres hogan, he recommended her very strong last. Hogan, who do you think, he said Stephanie Grisham. Mr. President. If a war with iran does break out. You have an exit strategy with iran youre not going to need an exit strategy. I dont need exit strategies. Can you tell us about your letter to chairman kim . Just a nice letter back and forth. He wrote me a beautiful letter on my birthday. He wrote a beautiful letter, i thought it was very nice. Two friendly letters. We get along very well. No mention of another meet something. Maybe there was, at some point well do that. Getting along very well. Hes not doing nuclear testing. When i took over, when i became president , they were testing previous to that, they were doing testing so much. They were doing ballistic tests and nuclear tests. We didnt have our prisoners back, wen did the have a whole lot of things that are going wrong. Now we have our hostages back, our prisoners back, they came back. Weve had as you know, the remains of the heroes, our great heroes from many years ago, thats coming back, and coming back as they find them and as they find the sites and the graves, theyre sending them back. The relationship is a far different relationship than it was during the obama years, where youre going to end up with a war. Youre going to end up with a war in north korea, that i can tell you. You understand . Youre going to end up youre going to end up in a war in north korea, and if the if it kept going the way it was going. If you had that Group Continuing going on ward. As far as iran was concerned. The deal was a horrible deal, it was no good. It was no good. It ebb ended in a very short period of time. They would have had a clear path to a nuclear weapon, were not going to allow that to happen, cant do it. Im all for iran, i have so many people, iranian friends. I come from new york, i have tremendous numbers of iranian friends, theyre great people, theyre from eye ran, theyre wonderful people. Its too bad this is happening, theyre living badly right now, the country is not doing well economically at all, that can be changed very quickly, very easily. But they have to get rid of the hostility from the leadership, the leadership, i hope they stay, i hope they do a great job. They should talk to us decently. Were all for them. He want it to be done properly. But the deal that was done by president obama, 150 billion for nothing, he used the money for tariffs. They gave the money out to terrorists. If you remember, john kerry, they asked him that question, do you know the moneys going to be used for terror yes. Cen willy some of it he knew about it, he actually said that some of the money may be used for terror. What kind of a deal is that . Then they gave them 1. 8 billion in cash. Cash. Plane loads of cash. What kind of a deal is that . And the biggest problem is, they had bad testing, you werent able to see many of the sites. You saw that, tim. Yes, sir. You couldnt go into the most important sites to test, to see. They were probably making the stuff for long time. But with 150 billion going to them. They were doing very well, and 1. 8 billion in cash. And you have no real right of testing, you couldnt test properly. And most importantly the agreement ends in a short period of time. They had a path to nuclear weapons, we cannot allow iran to have a path to nuclear weapons. And by the way, we have tremendous support. People were very happy with what i did the other day, by not doing something, okay . But we have tremendous support. Nobody wants to see iran have nuclear weapons. Thank you very much, everybody. Thank you. Do you think they understood the message you were sending them last week . I hope they understood the message, they decided not to strike. They shot down unmanned as you know, an unmanned drone. Will they take your seriously now mr. President . I think everybody does. I think you do too, goodbye. Abby getting a couple questions in there to the president in the q a talking iran, dont need an exit strategy with iran, talking about the letter he received with kim jongun, i want to focus with you, abby on you asked one of the economies about john sanders, the acting commissioner of cbp who is resigning. The president said hes not happy with conditions on the border, did i hear that right . You were in the room, hes never and the fact that hes said, he never even spoke to johnen sadders who is the person resigning. Quite a few remarkable things there. I think the question right now is what is going on at the border, is the president even aware. I asked him at the beginning, i am very concerned about, but he said that they were an impro improvement in the conditions in the obama administration, you know, this is an argument that weve heard from President Trump repeatedly, what were seeing and hearing about on the border right now, by all accounts is a scope and a scale. These kinds of stories of children not having regular access to showers and soap. Thats of a different scale. On capitol hill, theyre debating a package of border supplemental funds. He didnt talk about why he issued a veto threat earlier this morning, saying the version of the bill that the House Democrats were taking up, he would veto. Still a lot of Unanswered Questions from the president there. But as you mentioned, his customs and Border Protection chief resigned effective on friday, we learned about it today, the president saying hes never met him, he doesnt know who he is. How but he did say that brooke, the problem the administration has right now, at almost every level, department of homeland security, in these key positions, dealing with immigration, he has a slew of acting officials. John sanders was an acting official who had come up from the ranks of the department of homeland security. The president said today he never met him. He was initiating some changes in the personnel at this agency. The turmoil is whats causing a lot of people to ask, whats going on here at this Critical Agency that is dealing with public relations. The president doesnt even know who he is he said he didnt ask him to resign. Im certificasitting here thf hes not talking to this acting official, all these key positions, who else may he not be talking to at the white house.
