The countrys Positivity Rate closing in on 10 . 44 states are going in the absolute wrong direct here, and death numbers will be lacking these records by weeks, which tells us the worst is yet to come. And theyre now endangering the very people who protect them. A source telling cnn that several dozen secret Service Agents are either selfisolating or selfquarantining after being in contact with someone who is positive. Kay lan co Kaitlan Collins has more. Reporter the president has been on the road an awful lot lately, i believe 50 rallies, so every time the president goes somewhere, they go with him. They go in advance of the president to scope out where he will be. Theyre there while, of course, hes there, any of the other attendees, including the first family, the president s children. They remain long on the ground after the president is gone. Theres a lot of travel for these officers. Now we have learned that several dozen are having to quarantine or isolate, because they have contracted covid19 or came into contact with someone who did. These officers put their lives on the line essential for the president to protect him, but now also putting their own health at risk traveling with the president for all these political rallies tried to recreate what he did in 2016. The secret service did not comment, but we heard from someone family with the way it works. They said they are tested on the road and not having staffing shortages, but it does give you an indication of the level of risk theyre at when they are simply doing their jobs. You know, its telling right now, were looking at the president s legal team, you have some reporting on this or teams, i might say, stepping back in a few states. Whats going on there . Reporter the president and his aides have continued to deny reality, but were seeing how the legal a. Are disintegrating in front of our eyes in some places. In pennsylvania theyre trying to get recounts, trying to change the outcome of the election by which votes are counted there, one legal team representing the president s claim, and withdrawing, then in arizona weve seen the Trump Campaign withdraw the lawsuit that it filed there, because county officials determined that the number of votes that they were disputing was about 200. That comes, of course, as joe biden leads donald trump in that case by about 11,000 votes, and cnn has projected joe biden will win the state of arizona and flip it. So theyre seeing that its not being backed up in any progress. Kaitlan, thank you so much for updating us on both elements. Thank you. Right now election workers in georgia are recounting millions of ballots, doing it by hand. The race is incredibly tight. President elect joe biden leading by 14,000 votes. Amara walker is inside a Vote Counting Center in gwinnett, the second largest county in georgia. Do officials feel confident they can meet the deadline to complete the process by midnight on wednesday . Reporter county officials tell me they will do whatever it takes to meet this deadline six days from now. Its a tall order, but i can tell you u. Just observing this full hand recount thats been going on since about 10 00 this morning by the way, this has never been done before in georgia. Things have been going pretty smoothly. Take a look, election workers are hard at work. Theres about 50 audit teams that are working. This is supposed to be the most slowgoing part. Its the absentee ballots, brianna, that are being examined. Thats the more complicated part, because these are human marked ballots, where the president ial choices are bubbles. Now fulling county, which is the largest county in the state of georgia, is saying that its goal is to be done with the hand rye count by monday. We no theres a tiny count in northwest georgia, they finished recounting, but theres about 1500 to be counted. Those results should be uploaded this afternoon. All in all, state officials are say overall the objective is to build and boost voter confidence in the election system in the Voting Machines, and theyre confident on the other side of this, it would show that the Voting Machines were accurate, they were fair, we have monitors here on the ground as well, also from the carter center, all of this is important building voter confidence. As you know, the Trump Campaign, the president himself, has been spreading false claims of widespread voter fraud which we have seen no evidence here, and we know the team leadinged recount, along with state republicans, they are already objecting to how this audit is being carried out. They wrote that letter to the secretary of state yesterday before it even began. We see how its being carried out behind you, with so many folks putting in long hours and hard work. Amara, thank you. Amid the rhetoric, the voices of policy wol workers arg unheard. One official set hiss personally insulted by the vitriol, because poll workers are villainized unfairly. He is a registered republican and now works as a consultant to Election Administrators across the country. Thank you so much for being with us. In fact, you helped some counties in georgia preparing for this election. Explain to us why it would be so difficult for widespread voter fraud to exist. Thanks for having me. Its difficult for most voters to understand for seeing processes in realtime on livestreams, and see numbers that are not complete in real time. Its difficult for the common person, who does not have an elections background or may not have served as a poll worker in the past to see things as they actually are. Its really easy to misinterpret, or if you have an agenda, its very easy to interpret things the way that you are hopeful they would be. Youve kind of been given people a glimpse to the folks really serving the country. You say you were offended to hear a close friend imply that Election Administrators coordinated and allowed voter fraud. Why do you think that that opinion has become so pervasive, including among people you know, who theyre obviously friends oar family, and they know the work you do. Why has this become so pervasive . Its unfortunate i think for many reasons you should not need to say, but the integrity of election officials, the probate judges, your circuit or county clerks, or registrars, their positions are being called into questions because of outcomes. These are vote counters, Community Lead respect. These are people who have careers that depends on the outcome, and these people should be applauded, and you should try to join their team. If you ever have a question about election integrity, the best thing to do is reach out to that particular office or election administrator and ask them directly. Dont use alternative sources of media for your to be your source. These people have stories, the real people. Ive been in their office. I sieve the photos of their children on the wall. I hear six months away from a career pension, and i have a hard time i hope my goal is to bring this to light, that these are real people, the fix isnt in, their integrity depends on this as well, and they have a story to be told as well. The president , though, james, is saying the fix is in. So how difficult does that make it as you are trying to shed light on what really happens . Well, if the fix is in, they sure didnt tell the fixers. Our election have a long, extensive track record of things going right i will probably lose business s. By more relationships of mine may be hurt by saying that. The truth is the truth. These people are people of integrity. Theyre certainly not willing to risk going to prison for fixing an election for one candidate or another. Party does not play a role in how an Election Administrators, whether its ten voters or 10 million voters, the process has to be executed, and integrity of the process has to be upheld. Are you proud of this election, the way it was conducted . I know hundreds and hundreds of eElection Administrators. I have seen the training of thousands of poll workers during a pandemic. I think everything that could have possibly been done has been executed to the best that they could have done it, with the resources, and theres never enough money to help fund elections. They have done an incredible job. Voters should be proud of the job their Election Administrators that their poll workers have done to conclude the election. And as you point out, and thank you for doing so, these are extraordinary times. James young, thank you for being with us. Thank you. Once again the nation is recording on average about 1,000 people dying each day with a new death projection, the u. S. Could see 2200 deaths a day by midjanuary. The Positivity Rates are passing. Hospitals are bracing for the worst. Reporter we spoke to one woman who tragically lost her grandfather and mother last month. Minutes later, a phone call saying that her grandpa was also going to die. Take a listen. We called my grandpa. I put him on speakerphone so he could talk to my mom. He called my mom kiddo, called us all kiddo, kiddo, im not doing good. She said, dad, im not, either. He said, im dying. She said, dad i am, too. And he said, ill look for you in heaven. From the west to the east, where today new york citys mayor is preparing parents schools should be shut down as early as monday. Joining me is new York City Council member mark levine. Thank you for coming on to talk abou this. The mayor saying the sevenday average is 2. 8 , and when you hit the 3 mark, that shuts down schools. What is the city doing now . Can the city really do anything now to stop the jump . Yes, the rise in the Positivity Rate is alarming. The rise in every metric we have is alarming. After months of stability, cases have now doubled in the last week. We just got the statewide number for today at 5,400 so this is serious s being driven by people traveling to and from other states, being driven by people going back into office spaces, and being driven by indoor dining, which resumes at a limited level in september. We have to act immediately on every one of these fronts, or were going to get outofcontrol spread in new york city with real dire consequences. So theres also this warning about schools, which are very close to having to shut. Yes. This is on the same day theres a new 10 00 p. M. Curfew going into effect. This would close all inperson service until 5 00 a. M. You have a lot of Restaurant Owners saying they cant take much more. Lets listen. As you gradually move forward, you think you see light at the end of the tunnel, you only find out the chair is underneath you, youre one step forward, three steps back. This is going to hurt, especially on a saturday night when you tell people at 8 30, you have to be out of the door by 10 00. What are you telling constituents. This is a real hardship in northern manhattan, hanging on by a thread. This will be a serious blow, but honestly we have no choice. We need to do further than a curfew. We need to hit paw on indoor dining, brianna. This is a known venue of spread. People who are not able to wear masks while theyre eating, close contact, talking, laughing, this has been documented around the world to be highly risky for the spread of coronavirus. We have to take this step down to a full pause, not just an evening pause, a full pause to stop this virus, which is spreading rapidly. Or well need more serious action in the weeks to come. We dont want that. The Business Owners are suffering. Government has an obligation too help them now with direct financial assistance. Essential we need to pay them to close. The federal government should be there, we should have a stimulus package now, even in this lameduck session. If it doesnt happen, the city and state has to find money, even if it means borrowing. Public health is at stake, and doing nothing now is not an option. Council member, you have a lot ahead of you. We appreciate you coming on to talk about it. Thank you so much, brianna. We got through this once before, and well do it again. No doubt, sir. Thank you. It has been ten days since the election, six days since cnn called the race for president elect joe biden. There are still two states until called until now. Stand by for a cnn projection. Cnn can now project that joe biden has won the state of georgia. Donald trump has won the state of North Carolina. A major, Major Development in this historic election. David, take us through this. The final two states we were able to project, because the counties in those states are certifying the county vote totals, sending them into the state. We know in georgia theres a hand recounseled under way, but joe biden is the winner of georgia, 14,152 votes ahead of donald trump, 49. 5 to 49. 2 . No democrat has won georgia since 1992. This is a huge victory for the huge democrats, a state they have long eyed, like a tenyearlong project, and joe biden did it with explosive growth in the atlanta suburban area, big turnout among african americans, women, this is a big prize for the democrats. You noted in North Carolina, donald trump is going to hang on to North Carolina, 73,0602 vote ahead of joe biden. Again, we were seeing a majority of the counties reporting in and certifying their vote totals. Theres not enough outstanding vote for joe biden to come to overtaking donald trump. Therefore, donald trump will hang on to North Carolina and add its 15 electoral votes to his electoral total. That brings us to joe biden at 306 electoral votes, donald trump at 232 electoral votes. Thats a substantial Electoral College victory for joe biden. In fact, so substantial its precisely the kind of victory that donald trump labeled a landslide for himself four years ago, because thats how many he had. And now youve seen the entire maam colored in, red and bless. This is your new map of american politics and will set the table to 20 24. This is a big moment, david. I want to bring in dana bash to talk with us about this. You listen to that, 306 electoral votes, that, dana, is what trump won by, which he called a landslide, yet at this point in time hes not conceded the race, and we kind of see the nation, as far as acknowledging this election operating on two tracks, one is one that david laid out, call it the reality track. The other is the track that donald trump and many of his supporters, and certainly a lot of people who roted for him are operating on. Thats exactly right. The question is whether or not that second track of fantasyland is going to come back to reality anytime soon. I call it fantasyland, not to be glib, but because of what david just laid out in a way that only David Chalian can do, but to dig a little deeper, look at states like michigan and pennsylvania. Michigan, donald trump won by 10,074 votes. Right now, joe biden is ahead in that state by about 150,000 votes. So thats a. B, pennsylvania right now joe biden is ahead by more than 50,000 votes. Donald trump won by 44,000 votes. We can keep going on and on and on. Never mind the major difference right now, which is joe biden flipping arizona, which has not gone democratic since bill clinton, which was a blip, because he had the help of ross perot taking away george h. W. Bushs votes, and then to georgia, which i mean, this is a moment. This is a moment, as david said, that democrats have been trying to do for years and years and years. The democratic shift has been real and been robust, but its not just that. Its people like Stacey Abrams who has had a tenyear plan to deliberately and strategically get voters and others who work with her knew were potential to get out and vote, register them, make sure theyre engaged in order to change georgia from red to blue, and in 2020, it was successful. I just keep thinking about john lewis, who passed away, who represented atlanta, who is probably looking down on this, saying, you know, this is what i fought for right now, it came to fruition. If he had been ability to experience a moment and what it would have meant for him and his legacy. That count will for the popular vote, todayena, i know it took us days to get here to see exactly what it would be, but its big, this is a big win. Thats right. The popular vote doesnt give anybody the presidency. Thats not how it works. It works with the Electoral College, which is why we keep focusing on they uncalled states but the popular vote is a big thing in terms of the popular support. On the flip side, im told that the reason donald trump is going to give once we heard from him, for keep on keeping on and fighting is because of the 72 Million People who voted for him. That hes not going away. It is no small number. I think democrats would not be smart to think that they didnt have some work to do, representing those people its a great number. When it comes to the big Electoral College win. I think more than anything this is what donald trump said when he won. Lets listen we a tremendous landslide. Not only did we wen to the election well an Electoral College, as you know, congressman, we had a landslide. They lost an election and lost it big. It was really a landslide from the Electoral College. He only got upset after the results were very conclusive. 306 to 223, thats a pretty good she lacking. Theres no wait how does the president continue on with shall charade, and how do the people around him continue enable iing obviously theyre not out there doing what they should be doing. Acknowledging he won the rate, but you ask how long whether hes ever acknowledged that, admissed that or not, joe biden will be sworn in. That was always thought to be that was the likeliest path. But what he also does you a just now that donald trump won that, this is not part of the democrats map for the future enks can i just add one thing to that . Its a new arm, new elbow. Thats something that looks different, right . Its sort of the swipe that is coming in right into the country. So georgia, obviously huge, but thats also, dana going to rural to what hes able to do as president. Tell us about that. Georgia is not over for two reasons. Dont expect the president to acknowledge any of this. It is by law done on november 20th so taz going to be happening, but more importantly the balance of power will go through georgia toout standing it senate races. Or whether democrats are in charge. So the center of the Political University all right, and just to be clear that power, that control that hangs in the balance would not be the case in joe biden had not won the president sis. Is because that Vice President elect Kamala Harris would be casting a tiebreaking vote that the democrats can get to 50, but with Vice President elect, or then Vice President harris casting that vote, thats what would pull off control. Its why, when President Trump is retweeting things about the balance of power in the senate, perhaps its sort of a giveaway that he seeing the writing on the wall. The question is when will he be very public about the fact he will be moving on come january. Dana, david, thank you so much. This is a big moment, and i appreciate talking with you about it. Next, President Trump cleaning house in his last couple months, and the people he just put in charge of the pentagon, they deserve a very close look. The most serious threat to the United States and American Society today is the criminality in mexico, the drug cartels and the Human Trafficking driving millions of mexicans with no education, no skills and the wrong culture into the United States. Placing them essential as wards of the american people. Mac gregor also advocated for mar are martial law at the border. And another shift, moving an official to the nsa as legal counsel, which puts him at the center of a declassification pursuit over russia documents. He served as the white houses Top National Security lawyer. The problem is he has very little intelligence experience. Ellis has tbs forefront of many controversies, including overrulings officials over classified information in johns boltons book. He became infamous for hi alleged involvement in providing information to devin nunes, who at the time was the head of the intelligent committee. That showed that members of the president s team were included in Foreign Surveillance reports. Another report tied to nunes is also now in a senior role, ezra cohenwatt nick, accused of working with ellis to provide documents no nunes. Another appointment is a former aide, kash patel. S. Held up military aid to ukraine. Im joined by democratic senator Tammy Duckworth. Shes also an iraq war veteran, a purple heart recipient. Thanks for being on today. Thanks for having me on. This is such an important topic. Thanks for covering it. I wonder how you are reading this firing of defense secretary mark esper. When you look at this, is this a temper tantrum . Score settling . On you do you see it as a purposeful handy capping at the risk of national could you are in its extremely odd that a defense secretary is vacated with just two months into an administration . I think its all of the above, but i think its trumps attempt to get the ultimate yemen into positions where he can carry out in his last couple months in office some policies that never would have been able to be carried out before. Im scared to know what that would be, and wonder what he will do with regards to turkey, for example, asks him to do. Im very deeply concerned that we have a hollowing out of the toppish loans, and i top echelon. You have chris wray, gina haspel, who appear very vulnerable. Are you worried there could be a precipitous drawndown of troops . And what are your concerns about what that would look like . Im very concerned about that. It would certainly destabilize the region at a time when we know that our adversaries actually ramp up attacks on american interests. Understand theres always been a trend that our adversaries basically prod, poke and try to see what they can get away with within the first year of any president s term in office, and usually within the first few months. The First World Trade Center bombing happened in february of president clintons first year. Chairman in february of his first year had to enforce the nofly zone, because saddam had you says wayne testing how far he could get. President obama had to deal with the north koreans, and then president bush had 9 11. President obama had the detonation of nuclear tests, and President Trump, the syrians launched a chemical attack we had to retaliate against in april. Our enemy uses this transition time to see how far they can get away with it. For trump to come in, gut the military, not participate in a transitions handicaps the biden administration, when enemies are targeting us even more than usual. Weve heard a lot of democrats in congress who are obviously not impressed where the republican colleagues who in big numbers have still not acknowledged the win of joy joy, but sometimes being a politics is walking a line and they have a tricky one to walk. Democrats are trying to figure this out, and so theyre waiting right now until the president , it appears, is ready to throw in the towel. What do you say to them, you know, knowing that if some come out again him, they will ultimately probably lose their jobs . What do you say to them in this waiting game they are in . What i say is there is harm in waiting. Some of them have been ive seen some articles where some of the unnamed Republican Leaders have said, what is the harm in letting him pout for a couple weeks . Or whats the harm is letting him have his way . The harm is National Security. We all took an oath of office, swore to protect the constitution, to serve our country. You cannot stand by and let this president hollow out our military and put our National Security at risk. These are some of the folks on the republican side of the aisle, you know, who claim to be the biggest names in National Security and national defense, and yet it is crickets that i hear on that side of the aisle when it comes to the security, you know, stance were being put into here that really can hurt our nation and role in the world, but also will destabilize the world around us if we dont, for example, let joe biden get his National Security briefings, Intelligence Briefings immediately, if we dont get people into positions so they can actually do their jobs immediately as well. Im i would think President Trump pouting is, you know, on par with our own National Security. You and i just touch upon a few moments ago. We have learned that haspel was iced out of an intelligence meeting with the president and other officials. I mean, theres very clear reasons to fear for her being fired here, perhaps imminent ly what will that do . Its going to hurt our intelligence, and President Trump has already heard that with his term in office where hes disclosed so now our allies, many of whom are reluctant to share classified information with us. If President Trump takes action now, if he ices out gina haskell and makes it so that the turkish can come in and grab more territory, then the next president will have to deal with trying to get the territory back, or having to deal with a world where we have a very, very negative situation happening in the middle east or in africa or anywhere else in the world. This president i dont know whose agenda hes acting on, but the only saving grace in this whole thing is the professionalism and the dedication to the oath of office by our military men and women who will do the best job they possibly can, but they dont have a commander in chief that honors their service. We lost five american troops yesterday, and this president who tweets nonstop dozens of times a day hasnt tweeted once acknowledging the loss of those heroes. No, he hasnt responded to that. We noted that earlier. Its sort of a stunning omission from him. I wanted to ask you, while i have you here, your name was on the short list for Vice President ial running mate for joe biden. You would be a logical choice to have a role in his administration. If the president elect asks you to serve in his administration, will you say yes . I would take a long, hard look and gulp down hard because i love being in the senate. But, you know, brianna, some girls fall for the drummer in the band, i fall for the country needs you to serve line, so of course i would be honored to serve in the biden administration, but i love serving in the senate, and i think i can be an ally for him in the senate as well as the cabinet. But you would say yes . If he asked you, you would say yes . It depends on the job. But i certainly would take a long, hard look at it. Its really about where can i best serve him . Im on team biden 100 , and if joe biden called me up and say, hey, i think you should be driving convoys and delivering supplies to troops, i would take a long, hard look at doing that. All right, senator duckworth, thank you so much for being with us. Thank you. Up next, the gop senator and football coach gets the three branches of government wrong. Well roll the tape. What youre made of, were made for. Usaa alabamas newly elected senator, tommy tuberville, is showing an alarming lack of knowledge about how the government works, according to doug jones. Listen to what the former football coach said when asked if he thought the two parties could Work Together in congress. Our government wasnt set up for one group to have all three branches of government. It wasnt set up that way. Or three branches, you know, the house, the senate and executive. The three branches are, of course, the executive, the legislative, which is both the house and senate, and the judiciary. But he didnt stop there. Heres what senateelect tuberville said about the democrats pushing the world toward socialism. As i told people, my dad fought 76 years ago in europe to free europe of socialism. Its not the first time that hes told that story about world war ii. This is what he said on election night. My dad, as you know, i said this last time. He quit school at 16, joined the army, landed at normandy at 18, drove a tank across europe. He said he had never got tent look on peoples face in paris when we liberated the people in paris from socialism and communism. Dana bash, world war ii was fought to free the nazis who were fascists. The senator knows this, and this is important, because there has been a trend toward populism and some fascist tendencies. Never mind that the communists were in the soviet union and they were part of the allies, along with the United States. But thats a whole other road we dont necessarily need to go down. I want to add one more thing to this. Our colleague terrence burley pointed this out to me. Its not just the past, its the present he might have an issue with. Also in that interview, he talked about the fact that hes got temporary office space in the Dirksen Senate office building, which you and i know well. He said its a place he can work out of to interview people or fundraising like we do for georgia. Oops. Oh, my gosh. You cannot raise money out of a federal building. Its called the hatch act. Weve seen covering congress together, brianna, members of Congress Running out of the building across the street to the Party Offices where they do dial for dollars. So maybe that he has that out there now, somebody will call him and say, you cant do that, sir, because its illegal. Im not trying to disparage the house at all, but when someone comes into the senate, look, youve got a lot of people when they come into the senate, they often have experience in the house, right . Theyve kind of gone i dont want to call it juniorversity, but they have that experience. This is unusual, dana. It is unusual. Im not excusing it. Hes a firsttime politician, hes a sports guy, and he has some learning to do. Lets leave it there. He definitely has some learning to do. Thanks, dana. Our cnn coverage continues with Brooke Baldwin.
