Free determine of speech on the beautiful sound of customers making the most of their united flight. Campus seems to be under assault. The story might not be as power, wifi, and streaming entertainment. Black and white as you might thats. Seize the journey friendly. Thing. Im going to talk about that. Can a white actor play dr. Martin luther king jr. . I want to begin with the its the final countdown extraordinary moment from donald trump in iowa tonight. You know, donald trump just finishing speaking in iowa and the final countdown his first night of having secret service assigned to him he did if youre the band europe, you love a final countdown. Something they might not like. Its what you do. Can you describe what happened . If you want to save fifteen percent or more thats right. On car insurance, it was bizarre and jaw dropping. You switch to geico. Its what you do. We sat here walking away from the podium and do this demonstration which got the attention of the secret Service Agents on either side of the stage. Watch as he demonstrates his doubts about a story that ben carson has hold about trying to stab a close friend and relative as a teenager. Watch and well talk about it on the other side. He took a knife and he went after a friend and he lunged. He luggaged that knife into the stomach of his friends. But low and behold, it hit the belt. Can a a subconscious. Mind . It hit the belt and the knife a knack for predicting the future. Broke. Give me a break. Give me a break. Reflexes faster than the speed of thought. Give me a break. The knife broke. Can a business have a spirit . Let me tell you, im pretty good at this stuff. So, i have a belt. Can a business have a soul . Somebody hits me with a belt, can a business be. Alive . Its going in, it moves this way, it moves this way. It moves that way. He hit the belt buckle. Anyone have a knife and want to try it on me . Believe me, it aint going to work. Youre going to be successful. But he took the knife and went like this and plunged it into the belt and amazingly the belt stayed totally flat and the knife broke. How stupid are the people of iowa . How stupid are the people of the country to believe this crap . Life. Is unpredictable. So really remarkable watching him step away from the podium life is deaths. And births. Like that. The audience seemed to be sickness and health. Enjoying it but its not something that secret service love and heartbreak. Agents spent all this time, its and covered california is there for it all. Not just to help keep you well. Not what they want to hear a but to make sure the cost of being unwell candidate say or expect to hear a candidate say. This is the most animated we doesnt ruin this whole life thing. Because its more than just health care. Have heard trump be and the its life care. Toughest words against ben carson. He talked about jeb bush and marco rubio and said of Hillary Clinton the woman thing is the only thing she has going for her. It was a very big, animated night for trumps critics. Thank you, we need you to rest your voice. We can hear that you are losing it. You are working hard out there. Athena jones from iowa important. I want to bring in bob beckel. Also angela rive. And author and former navy seal carl higby is here. Breaking news from the pentagon. A senior u. S. Official tells cnn and bob, we have this i want to talk to you about this. That u. S. Forces have targeted are we going to go to this . Jihadi john in an air strike in raqqah, syria, Barbara Starr pardon me, folks at home we have here with new details. Breaking news im being told. Don, u. S. Officials are now well get back to the political telling us, yes, it was a drone panel in a moment. Strike that the u. S. Conducted over raqqah, syria, targeting the pentagon reporters are jihadi john. Reporting this information. And that he was in a vehicle at well get to Barbara Starr in a the time. Moment. This is interesting information a senior official says u. S. Because we know they were forces have conducted an air conducting surveillance over him strike in raqqah syria targeting for at least a day or more. As they tracked him around. Jihadi john. And you are getting this they had gotten eyes on him, so information just as were going to speak and were tracking him. On the air tonight im hearing they have very strict rules. They can only take that drone shot with a missile from the it. Im getting it in realtime right drone when they are certain of now. Who they are hitting and when he is a british citizen, seen in they are certain that there is the video showing the murder of very little likelihood that isis hostages including steven civilians will be hurt. They wait for these high value targets to be free and clear of sotloff and james foley. Barbara starr has more now. What do you know . Any civilians they may use as good evening, don, this information just into cnn first. Human shields to hide just a moment ago. Themselves. He must have been out in the a Senior Administration official open and they were convinced has now told me that the u. S. This was their best opportunity. Has conducted an air strike in and the pentagon in announcing this still saying they are raqqah, syria, earlier today, waiting final confirmation. Targeting the man known to the world as jihadi john, the he had been the face of isis in the beheading videos. Notorious murderer of several that is it for us tonight. American, japanese, british, other hostages, someone who has had hostages under his control ac360 starts right now. And we saw those terrible beheading videos. Good evening, thanks for let me be very precise with what joining us tonight. Donald trump is not backing down we know and what we do not know from his promise of if elected at this hour. To round up and deport 11 u. S. Forces conducted this air Million People living in this strike. We do believe at this hour it country illegally. Was a drone but that has not trump says he would establish a been officially confirmed. Deportation force to do the job. He says his plan would be jihadi john, his name, is effective, humane and pass legal muster. And some within his party and Mohammad Emwazi. He is a kuwaitiborn brit. Across the political spectrum he is someone the United States, have doubts about all of it. Briton and japan wanted to get others dont want to make it the very badly for many months. Center piece of a president ial campaign. And democrats are looking at the he has caused utter misery and demographics of the elections and hope that trump grief to the families of the hostages in so many countries. The families getting family notification this evening, we are told. This is going to be a very interesting several hours ahead of us. The u. S. , the administration believes when it took the strike it did get him, that it did kill Mohammad Emwazi. But that is not confirmed at this hour. There are no u. S. Troops, military or intelligence personnel on the ground in raqqah, syria where this took place. In the coming hours, while they believe they got him, no absolute confirmation, they will be doing at social media accounts and Monitoring Communications around the world of various isis elements to see what they have to say about this. They will be trying to do everything they can to get absolute confirmation. But what we do know is earlier this evening, the families were notified that the United States conducted an air strike, they do believe at this hour they killed jihadi john, they are hoping very much for that absolute confirmation. Stand by. I want to bring in buck stetson to talk about what this means to the war on or repoterraare on h it is not going to change the reality on the ground in syria. This is the sort of thing that is a victory but its not going to have the impact that you would see if perhaps you got the top leadership, and then quite honestly when you loob at the past of insurgencies in iraq, they were great victories but the insurgencies got worse afterwards. If you want to get him because he had american blood on his hands, absolutely, this is a big victory. From the case of what happens now with the war against isis, with the kurds, all of that, its more complicated. They have plenty of fighters and unfortunately he is just one of them. Barbara is getting new information. What do you know about his recent movements . I want to jump in on this point. Hes absolutely right. We ask every day if not every week about jihadi john for months now. And so much that the u. S. Wanted to get to. Is he raeeally a socalled high value target . The league of Osama Bin Laden . The top leaders of the terror organizations . What u. S. Officials have said very privately is no, he is not a highvalue target in terms of making a substantive difference on the war against isis. He is an evil killer that they want to bring to justice and thats how they did it they hope this evening. It is absolutely right. These are two essentially different things. This, if it was a drone strike, let me explain about how the drone strikes are conducted. It is the joint special Operations Command from fort bragg, north carolina. This is the command that has been gathering intelligence, very precise bits of intelligence on the top isis operatives. They operate in very quietly and under the table, a series of drones and many of the drone strikes youve seen have actually been conducted by this military organization. They have very strict rules of engagement. They do everything to avoid civilian casualties. They try to get a bead on where someone is, follow them around, keep surveillance on them overhead and essentially, quite frankly, take the shot when this person is either out in the open or not surrounded by civilians. Its very painstaking work and why there have been so few of these and so difficult to do. But clearly for the last 48 hours, they had a clear idea where jihadi john was. And let me add that all of the information that we have been told is that after all these terrible beheading videos, there are some elements of isis that pushed jihadi john to the side. They perhaps did not want as much to do with him as before. He is bringing a lot of heat on the organization. What we dont know is how much jihadi john had been forced to move around. When they move around thats when the u. S. Can try to spot them. He essentially correct me if im wrong he had become the face of isis, what people related to isis most. The terrible beheading videos that we had to, edit to make sure we dont show how horrific they are. He had become the face but recently they wanted to put him to the side . At cnn we had reporting from u. S. Officials indicating that that is what they thought was going on inside isis. Of course the u. S. Has a limited vision at times into the isis organization. I dont think its anything other than evident to the public that the way that the u. S. Tries to track isis the most is by connecting overhead surveillance with aircraft and drones over syria and iraq and also of course, monitoring the electronic communications. This is something that has gone on now with al qaeda, all major terrorist organizations around the world including isis, this monitoring their communications on the dark web, monitoring their communications in secure chat rooms. This is well understood that this is what the u. S. Government does. We are not revealing any extremely Sensitive Information here. This is a very open matter. Barbara. I want to ask you a question before we get to break. Considering, as you say, they were trying to marginalize him, what sort of a blow is this for isis . What this is, i think every u. S. Official will tell you come tomorrow, this is a message to isis, we will find you, we will kill you. But still, they have to absolutely confirm that they got him. That may be a very difficult thing to do. They believe that they do. They are telling us tonight that they believe they got him. But very clearly. They are waiting for that final confirmation but the message to isis in syria, in raqqah in their capital is you can run but you cant hide. Okay, stand by. The man behind the beheading videos, it is believed that he was killed in a raqqah, syria drone strike. Welcome to todays working world. Companies everywhere are working harder and investing more. And former navy seal, carl higby and buck sexton who is a former cia and navy seal. Im going to how is this going to affect the race . Missouri . No, trump. We jumped from cia to seal. Jihadi john. How is jihadi john going to affect the race . Yeah. Not very much at all. They will talk about foreign policy. But anyone who knows what the situation was going after hvts in iraq, someone will take his place. There will be another executioner tomorrow who is willing to do some of the same things. Isis is in control of large swaths of territory. There are a few Million People that are in what you have to call the islamic state. Put the video up of donald trump. This is the first day with secret service and he did something that caught him off guard. What do you think of this belt buckle thing . First of all, think about this, how lucky can trump get . Thats a big story right there. He called one of his opponents a path logical liar, he stepped out in front of a crowd and said knife me and you get news of this drone attack. You know, trump has been in for the summer and now moved off broadway and he is about to set the big lights. I mean, you cant say things like this over and over and get away with it. And so far he has but im not one of the people that buy the fact he can make it to convention. Mr. Higby, he is your guy, did that make you uncomfortable . I dont think so. People are looking for strength as a leader. And he stepped out and said try it. Look at me. And he called it for what it is. He said this is a path logical syndrome. I dont think it happened. Dont be fooled. Thats what attracts people to trump. People like what he has to say. Its real. Lets talk about the Washington Post tonight. They are reporting tonight that the republican establishment worried that trump or carson might win and that some on the right are contemplating drafting mitt romney. What is your reaction to that, angela . 6 million votes. Thats how many he lost by last time. That would be a terrible decision. I understand why the establishment is very afraid right now. Donald trump and ben carson do not have what it takes to win the general election. And so i understand the fact that theyre frazzled, their golden guy, i wont call him the golden boy. That name belongs to marco rubio. But they golden guy, jeb bush has not done what they thought he would do. He has been a flop at every debate. He shook up his campaign and that only shook him up. Thats one of the reasons for the reporting. I get it. But the problem is they i dont know. You tell me. The thing that ben carson has what it takes. Ben carson has been beating Hillary Clinton in national polls. He is one of several candidates that the republicans have. Just with one sentence. There are several candidates that are beating hillary in the polls in recent weeks. Trump is not one of them its halloween the year before. What are you talking about . Let me finish. Go ahead. I was getting ready to tell you that the electorate is very, very different than what it was in 2012. You have frustrated republicans. You are eager to jump in tonight and the reason is that establishment just wont do. So they are flocking to donald trump and to ben carson but the rest of the country is not going to be there with you. Listen they wont be Hillary Clinton. Lets remember that the rules of nominating a president at convention are very, very tough for the republicans. If the establishment who does control all super delegates, if they want to get in and encourage, say, favored sons to run in certain states to take votes away from carson or trump, they could stop him. I could sit down right now and figure out a way to deny them a majority of the delegates in the Convention Even if they win iowa and new hampshire. Donald trump, the Republican Party knows darn well if they push him out unfairly he could run as an independent and he has the resources to win. Stop, everybody. I want you to listen to this, donald trump talking about romney tonight. Listen. Something happened to romney. He choked. I always said he choked. For a month and a half before the election you didnt see him. Say what you want about obama. He was on jay leno, he was on david letterman. I said i was backing romney. I said when are you going to go on television . Then he announces he is building a 12car garage in malibu. And the horses. His wife has horses. Anyway, he loses. We should have won. He certainly doesnt seem worried. Its donald trump. I cant believe well talk about this all you want. Hes got a lot of money and presence. But when they decide, they, the establishment that everybody is revolting against. And its a slim percentage here. But leave that aside. If trump runs as an independent he may get 15 of the vote. Ill contribute to it. More than 15 . The establishment to be beat the conventional wisdom among people who are paying close attention is that its going to be cruz and rubio in the end. People are turning away from this notion. We see all the polls, trump and carson at the top. But you keep mentioning the establishment. Rubio came in as a Tea Party Guy and made missteps and done his penance and is accept judge. And ted cruz is acceptable to conservatives and i think the establishment will come around to him. They are just a few of the candidates. All of this focus on trump is wrongheaded. Lets focus on carly fiorina. She posted this, donald, ive got to interrupt again. You would know about path logical. How was that meeting with putin or wharton or your selffunded campaign. Anyone can turn a multimillion dollar inheritance to more money. But all of the money in the world wont make you as smart as ben carson. Wow. Angela . I have two words for you, don. Epic shade. That was horrible. But she got him. That was good. She got him. Slice. Carly has great talking points. But she is still not beating the donald, not you, don, sorry. Im just don. Trump sat down with erin burnett. When he says he went after his mother and wanted to hit her in the head with a hammer, that bothers me. When he says hes path logical and he says that in the book i dont say that. Im not saying anything other than path logical is a very serious disease and he says he is path logical. Other people said he said in the book that hes got a pathlogical temper or temperament. Thats a big problem. You dont cure that. Thats like, i could say they say you dont cure as an example child molester. You dont cure these people. You dont cure a child molester. Theres no cure for it. Path logical, theres no cure for that. I didnt say that. He said it in his book. So buck, what is your reaction . Its highly unhelpful and comes on the heels of a lot of attacks that weve seen that arent attacks you would see on democrat candidates or attacks on barack obama when he was running the first time around, asking people what happened 50 years ago. Lets talk to his third grade classmate. The things they are asking him are crazy. It shows they are desperate not to just take ben carson down a peg but to discredit him because he is problematic on a lot of narratives. So i think what donald trump is doing is unhelpful but he says things that are unfemful to republicans. You are sitting next to a trump supporter. You cant believe he is still doing so well in the polls. He says a lot of things you think are unhelpful but the American People overwhelmingly support him. They just want to hear it. 25 of the republicans now. Be careful with the overwhelming. And does anybody here believe the polls show ben carson beating Hillary Clinton by 6 points. Is anyone going to put your chances on the table and buy that . The rubio poll i believe that poll 100 . I know you do too. When we come right back, a new man at the top of the university of missouri tonight at the campus moves quickly to address protests over racism. Breaking news i want to update you now from the pentagon. A senior u. S. Officials says that u. S. Forces have targeted jihadi john in an air strike in raqqah, syria. It is not clear whether the strike was successful. Jihadi john who western officials have identified as Mohammad Emwazi has appeared in a series of brutal isis execution videos. Well continue to update you on that. The university of missouri appointed an interim president. There is cnns ryan young. He is there for us tonight. Bring us up to date. Obviously, he is a black man. The third black student to graduate from the law school. He is a professor at the university. He understands that part of the university. But he talked about the safe places around campus for students. What role do you think that safe spaces have here . I think safe spaces are critical. I think students need spaces where they can feel comfortable, where they can interact without fear. But i think if you are asking in the context of the First Amendment and free speech issues, thats a very delicate balance. Both are essential to our way of life in this country. And of course, don, as we walked around the campus this evening, a larger conversation is going on about what is the next step. A lot of students say it has returned to normal but internet rumors are scaring a lot of students around here and that kept some away this afternoon. There will be more healing before everyone gets over this. There will be a large conversation going on. You said not quite back to normal. What is the mood tonight . You know, talking to several students as they walked along here, the Intramural Fields are near us. One said they are scared. They grew up in the era of campus shootings. They take the threats seriously. Others would like to have a conversation to discuss some of the issues going on here. The president for his part now plans to sit down with several students to have a bigger conversation. Thank you very much. Appreciate that. Joining me now, Nicholas Kristof from the new york times. You heard the chancellor talking about safe spaces. What is your reaction . I dont know that its going to resolve things there. He talked about the importance of discussing this. I think hes right. One of the things we need to have is more conversations about race. Its something that whites are uncomfortable talking about. One of the things that i worry about is that it makes whites more nervous about wading into a mine field and nursing grievances and make it harder to have open talk about issues we need to talk about. Its tough. Sitting here, everyone couches their words and measures their words. We have to come to a place where we dont have to do. Thats the concern about free speech and safe spaces. Thats right. And a broader issue on american campuses that they have a leftward tilt. Lets talk more about this. They have separate places for were seeing separate spaces for black and white students. This is from concerned students 1950 dividing into seven groups. They are asking white allies to leave. And blackonly healing space for the students to share, dedepress, vulnerable and heal. Asking allies to leave black healing spaces it seems like segregation. I flinch at that. Im not there and i think its also worth pointing out that students throughout the history of the world have done stupid things sometimes. But, yeah, i mean, i would argument thats not the direction to go. On the other hand, there are real issues there. There have been death threats. Two separate issues i think. Right. I dont think this is the right way to address that. Were going to talk more about this when we come back. Im going to ask how this is impacting the race. Youre sick. Were back talking about the war of Political Correctness being waged on College Campuses across the country. Im back with Nicholas Kristof of the new york times. The candidates are talk today. This is marco rubio. I am concerned about a broader issue, the freedom of speech on campuses seems to be under assault in some of the finest institutions in the country. In the case of missouri im trying to figure out what he did to get fired. I just dont know enough about that situation to give you a comment other than to say i still havent been able to find out what exactly he did that was so outrageous. Is this a made for republican moment . I think it is. There has been a longtime concern about universities drifting leftward. When condo lee condoleeza ric cant speak at rice, it compounds the problem. And create a platform. In a country where the majority of white americans believe that the Racial Discrimination problem is against whites, not blacks. Carly fiorina now. Lets listen. One of the things you see going on so many College Campuses now is kids are taught that you know, if anything offends their sensibilities they should say dont talk to me about that. They are called trigger warnings. This does not help young people prepare for a lifetime in the real world. Is she right . Are real civil rights struggles being marginalized. These are not real World Problems that the students are dealing with . I think there is a legitimate problem with too much Political Correctness but i also think if you look at American Educational problems, is anybody really think that Political Correctness on some campuses is greater a problem than k through 12 education that is dysfunctional and High School Graduate rates that are 17th in the industrialized world. We have plenty of problems. Applicant call correctness is real and not in the top 25. We have a quote from you. This is what you said. You said, this sensitivity that is intolerance and its an instinct on the left. I am prochoice liberal who has been invited to infect christian universities with progressive thoughts and to address catholic universities where ive praised condoms and Birth Control programs. Im sure i discome fitted many students on these conservative campuses but its a tribute to them that they were willing to be challenged. In the same spirit liberal universities should seek out prolife social conservatives to speak. I do think there is a real problem when many universities have become a vacuum chamber. What do we do . I think we have to think about diversity on campuses, not only in terms of race, but also diversity of political belief and that presents real problems, obviously. But i think we need to i think wed all be better off if universities were more welcoming to social conservatives. Thank you. Good to be with you. Always a pleasure. You cast two actors in this role. You cast a black and a white dr. Martin luther king jr. Why did you do that . I really wanted to explore the idea of could actors of different racial persuasions play the same character . Could a white actor who was American Play a prominent american and have ownership in that legacy . Oddly enough, we end up not going with the black actor. The black actor had to drop out because of a family issue. And we had to go with the white actor. Some people might say this is a great social experiment, content of character not the color of skin. But the writer of the play is outraged. She said the casting of a white king is committing yet another erase your of the black body. Sure it might be in the world of pretend but it is disrespectful nonetheless, especially to a community that has a rare moment of witnessing itself both creatively and literally in the world. She was unable to join us tonight but i would like your response to that . That is a fair response. As an artist i think we become too sensitive when people respond to our work in a way we may not like or agree with. But i think she is very intelligent. She had a fair reaction. And i think that is the nature of art. We are here to provoke. Were here to inspire and to make people think. If thats what she came to, i think thats fair. I think people should be able to react in any way they want to react. So i dont get upset when people who watch my work find themselves in a certain emotional space. Its my job as the artist to make you feel something, to make you react. And i think thats a good thing. Thats a very mature and a good way of respecting other peoples opinion. Thank you for. That dr. Martin luther king hes not just any black man. She a sacred figure to many people of all races but particularly for people of color. How did the audience react . Various ways. We had some people who got up and walked out. We had a couple people walk out. We had a couple people who wanted to walk out in the beginning but but as they watched the actor they couldnt believe they were being won over by this actor. Because at a certain point once they got past the fact of skin color, what youre left is, is a stage and an actor who is trying to honestly embody this legendary figure. And because we took it so seriously, we won some people over. What does that hamilton is on broadway, its a black and hispanic actors playing the white founding fathers. What do you think it says about society that some people reacted the way they did . I think race runs deep within our kutch because of the tragedies that have grown out of it and i think it should be there. I think theres a reason why people react so strongly to anything that deals with race because race has been such a
