Their security clearances. And tonight sources telling cnn that the president is quite pleased with the whole discussion and distraction. So lets discuss now. Frank bruiny is here, a cnn contributor and also columnist for the new york times, also micha michael dantonio, author of the truth about trump. Good evening, gentlemen. This threat to revoke security clearances we face this challenge again, right, frank . Its a distraction, right . But what hes doing is also a big story because i think hes promoting an enemies list. So what do we do . We have to cover it but its another distraction. We have to cover it because its another way this presidency is breaking all norms. And donald trump likes to intimidate his critics. Hes serving notice where if he go out there in the world and say negative things about it, hell make it difficult for you to do your livelihood. This is the piece with us in the press in fact hes incited violence against us. You think three times, four times before you criticize him because your life could become difficult. I think to talk about it in any other way is to soft pedal it. And michael cohn was the guy who went around and threatened everybody. This is the m. O. , constantly distract but also threaten. Its also extremely destructive. The whole idea is to get everybody confused so theres no reality, no truth and we question everything. Remember this was the president who said he kind of envied the north Korean Leader because his people kind of stood at attention. Well, this is piece of that as well. You know, he tweets about the, you know, the whole russia investigation, and he seems to contradict what his intelligence people are telling him. Hes calling it a hoax, and he claims that but he says he believes u. S. Intelligence, but yet this is hoax. So then what is what . And Sarah Sanders tried to explain it today saying, well, he believe this part is a hoax but this part is real. What . He doesnt want us talking about what happened in helsinki. This is all of a piece with him constantly throwing out a million notions. Another thing to remember is this is actually a soviet technique. The soviets did it, and then putin started doing it. Where you throw out conspiracy theories about everything, and it can be contradictory. Thats the whole idea is to create so much confusion in peoples minds that they cant cross the trulgt. And when hes reading on the paper, you must say this because youre just getting creamed in the media and by your own republican and own colleagues, you need to say this. But what he really means 100 . Youre seeing trump reigned in one moment and reverting to what he wants to do the next. And back and forth and back and forth. And thats why its a contradiction because what he insists on believing which holds him harmless and everyone going after him are villains, thats what he believes youve known him for a long time and you have a new oped. He often says he was the Best High School ball player in new york state. Records show he wasnt. He thinks the deception helps him and he doesnt think lies matter. I dont think you can give up. This is the thing everyones been debate, well, do we keep calling him out . Hes not going to stop so you have to keep calling out each moment of this because no one else is standing up for the truth. So i know people who know him and have known him for a long time and they all know this, right . And they say now i dont know who this guy is, right . But they all say the same thing and the best ball players and new yorkers know this. Why is the rest of the country falling for the lies and deception . Most people are not paying attention. We have to be certain about that. Who watches even cnn, msnbc, the other network. But its a limited audience. And the vast number of americans are earning a living, raising their kids, going out on dates and theyre not focused on how many times this person lies. He was taught to do this by his family from a very young age. You said it comes from his father. Absolutely. He fixed things for donald. He created false successes for him growing up. So he was taught, well, im going to go up to the military academy, im going to get in with those guys and then theyre going to promote me. And thats what happened. Even his family members know it, so what is the rest of the country is he right . Are they not paying attention . I think hes very right. We always overestimate how close the attention people are paying is. But there are many people saying thats donald trump being donald trump, i like these other aspects of him and im not going to focus on that. The more he lies the more it becomes white noise to them. Its not something they really concern themselves with but just donald trump being donald trump. And people think its fun. They see me talking like this in an exasperated way and theyre amused. I wonder if there were other president s well, there werent other president s who lied this way, but i wonder what the reaction would have been if barack obama lied this way. Initially we would have been horrified because we expected better of him, he led us to expect better of him. Here in lies the ultimate explanation for trumps habits. He lies because he gets away with it. The danger is he could damage public trust where citizens retreat to a habit of cynical acceptance. Visit an authoritarian country like russia. Hope resides in institutions and individuals who refuse to accept the deceptions. So we have to keep on keeping on. This is our lot to call out the lies every time they happy, that there is a factual basis for our shared reality and dont give in. Dont give in to thinking everything is corrupt. Maybe a good exam is dan coats coming out and refuting what the president said, you know, about interference. Saying, listen, this is the real deal. He got chastised for it, but he did it. I think thats important because very often trumps critics, when we call him out on his lies, they say we donttrust i want to put this up because frankly i know you are also interested in the polling. Starting the day before the trumpputin conference. His Approval Rating rose 1 point from june to 45 . So whats your take here . What youre seeing there the rise has to do among republicans. And what youre seeing is a tribalism in our politics that when they see their guy being critici criticized by the other side they dont like to say whats wrong. Just weve got to rally to his side. Youre not only rooting for the team, youre convinceed the other team is dangerous, evil. And that motivates you when your person is under attack to rally to his or her side all the more strongly. Thats what youre seeing in the polls and the Trump Presidency week in, week out. What people should note, though, hes not doing well among independents. Up next calls for a Georgia State lawmaker to step down. He dropped his pants and screamed racial slurs. Take a look at your tv screen. This is real, this happened. What could make someone do such a thing . Were going to take a look next. Who would have thought, who would have guessed . An Energy Company helping cars emit less. Weve changed the way people get around. Weve provided new opportunities. But moving forward, its time to move in a new direction. And if there are times when we fall short, we commit to being open, taking responsibility for the problem, and fixing it. This begins with new leadership, and a new culture. And youre going to see improvements to our service. Like enhanced background checks, 24 7 customer support, better pickups, and ride quality, for both riders, and drivers. Youve got my word, that were charting an even better road for uber, and for those that rely on us every day. Youve got to see this. Im not sure its appropriate for children, but you really have to see this. Tonight georgias governor and House Speaker calling for a republican state lawmaker to resign after he was caught with his pants down screaming racial slurs. His name is jason spencer. He says he was pranked into believing he was making an antiterrorism training video. Again, i have to warn you the language youre about to hear is extremely offensive, but we are going to play it before you because i dont believe in sanitizing stuff. This is the news. I dont want to sanitize what this man said and did so here it is. Because of who you are you could be the victim of kidnapping by isis. You have two seconds to attract attention. How do you attract attention . Start screaming, take your clothes off. In america theres a world, it is the end world. I am going to be the terrorist. You have three seconds to attract attention. G go. [ bleep ]. Are you crazy, the word is noonie not the nword. Thats disgusting. It is awful. Alice, good evening, everyone. Hi, don. Youve been talking to people who know representative spencer. Theres clearly no excuse for what he did, but what are they telling you . Theyre saying i grew up in georgia, lived in his district for several years and theyre saying hes disgraced himself, people of georgia, people across the country. And republicans and democrats alike, people across the state are calling for him to resign. They say its completely unacceptable. They say its uncalledfor, it is disgraceful, and it is across the board unequivocal thing that he should not have done that, what was he thinking, this is bridge too far and he needs to go now. Unfortunately, he is going to stick it out. He was defeated in the primary back in may and he still has five months to serve in the state legislator and he plans to stick it out. But i dont see it lasting. People across the board from the governor on down are encouraging him to step down. Its just unacceptable. This is his response. Okay . He said in response to the Washington Post and he said he had participated in this because he had received death threats. And he said sasha sasha barren cohen and his associates tack advantage of my paralyzing fear that my family would be attacked. In posingans israeli agent he pretended to offer selfdefense exercises. My fears were so heightened at that time i was not thinking clearly nor could i appreciate what i was agreeing to when i participated in his class. I deeply regret the language. I used at his request. If i was not so distracted by my fears i have not agreed to participate in the first place. What do you think . Is he a racist, of course, he just admitted that on the camera. Does he need to resign, of course he does. As alice points out of course he does. Its not a thing. I think theres a teaching moment in there because one thing i found striking is how easily he moved back and forth between racism and homophobia and emasculation. Thats not where my mind goes. And theres another section where he drops literally and toots his butt up show me the bottom. No, trousers down. America. Good, one more time but louder with america. America. Good. We say if you want to win you show some skin. Okay, show it to me. Now try to touch me. Ill touch you. Ill touch you with my buttocks. You drop the gun or ill touch you. Usa. So he did that because he was he was told it would scare terrorists. Go on. You were saying. That and at the end he pretends to cut off the fake penis off the fake terrorist. My mind doesnt go there. I think you need to examine whats going on with that piece, right . Because if you have something to say its 2018, say it. But to me it feels like deal with that because all of the phobias in america and all of the isms are cousins. Its fascinating psychologically to see him traverse back and forth between it constantly. One more thing i want to show. Theres another one. No. Yeah, this is him. In addition to using the n word, okay, he also spoke in an offensive asian accent pretending to be an asian tourist and trying to take a photo under a burka and trying to see if she is a terrorist. Convince him you are chinese. Go. Red Dragon Hong Kong sushi hochi min city, red dragon, chopstick, sushi. Alice . Sushi, really . Theres really not a whole lot to say about that other than its hes saying sasha barren cohen basically hoodwinked him. Does sasha barren cohen bear any responsibility for this or is this on him for being so gullible . This was certainly creative, but for him to blame anyone is ridiculous. This state representative as soon as he knew this was wrong he should have walked out and not looked back. He shouldnt blame anyone else. He should completely take responsibility and do the best he can to salvage whats left of what he has in his future. And i think for him to blame anyone else is completely wrong. Look, i think theres going to be a lot more. Sasha barren cohen has duped a lot of people and the shows to follow he said he was just really scared of the terrorist, alice. Look, he should be scared of what he saw of himself in that episode. I think its beyond disturbing. But, look, he has no one to blame but himself. Anyone in that situation, it was long enough for him to realize this is completely not something i want to be associated with and he had every opportunity to walk out. And i think its wrong for him to put the blame on someone else. A couple of people would but nobody can dupe you to say whats yoin in your heart. You have to decide whether youre going to say that thing out loud. You have to decide whether youre going to go konichiwa or pull your pants down. Thats on you. The wall street journal is reporting tonight that President Trumps lawyer, rudy giuliani, has an offer for the special counsel. Trump will sit down with mueller if the questions are limited to collusion and dont touch on possible obstruction of justice. So lets talk about this. A former u. S. Attorney who worked with robert mueller, andrew mccabe. And a former federal prosecution. Good evening to all of you. So good to have you on. Cnn and my colleague here, dana bash reported last week that trump and his attorney rudy giuliani, excuse me believes the president is coming down to the idea of limiting the scope of a potential interview with mueller. This is the quote. He said i think he has accepted this idea it cant be wide ranging, but he still want to do something. Whats your reaction to the news . Do you think trumps legal team feels theres vulnerability here even with that in. I have to think you do have vulnerability. And frankly id be surprised if mueller and his team want to limit things like that. Is there vulnerability to obstruction . Is that why theyre making this demand . There could be, right . I mean obstruction has been bandied about, and, frankly, you know, thats the big concern. If i am President Trumps attorney, thats the biggest concern, right . Because if you look at the tweets, if you look at the public statements, prosecutors are listening. Theyre listening to every statement thats being made by the president. And theyre coddling together and putting together those statements for absolutely a potential obstruction of justice case. What about perjury as well . You know, sometimes he doesnt tell the truth a lot most of the time. You know, the thing with perjury is what happens under oath. And, frankly, these statements and the public narrative and the president trying to control that public narrative, youre absolutely right theres an inconsistency there. Listen, blocking questions about obstruction wouldnt necessarily rule out the possibility of the president being indicted or continuing the investigation on that, right . Youre right, don. And i dont think look, this has been such a moving target in terms of this negotiation, which is going on for what, almost a year now in terms of, hey, hell talk, hell sit down with you. He wants to sit down with you, but hell only talk about a few things. And so its changed from week to week and month to month. So i frankly dont buy any of it. And also keep in mind, don, the whole what do you mean you dont buy any of that . What dont you buy . Hes never going to sit down with this prosecutor under these circumstances and answer questions that could put him in jeopardy. So hes stalling . Theyre stalling . Absolutely. If i was his lawyer i would say, mr. President , over my objection. Youre not going to do it. Youre not going to sit down and be exposed to a series of interviews and questions thats going to come back to bite you for the very reasons youve been talking about in terms of the truth being a moving target. And remember, don, very important, jim comey, the whole reason hes critical of this investigation, the whole reason hes a witness is because muellers theory is that he was fired, he was absolutely fired as a result of what he was doing visa vi a russia collusion investigation. That is that is quintessential obstruction of justice. All right. Julia, it seems you agree with guy that the president is not going to sit down. I saw you were shaking your head. Can we move on now because i want to switch gears. Yeah, i dont think hes going to testify. Lets talk about Michael Cohen. Waived attorneyclient privilege on that recording. Trump speaking to his former attorney about a payment to former playboy model karen mcdougal, which would allow the government to use it in their investigation. Court filings show prosecutors have 11 additional tapes includi including conversations he had with members of the media. Why would the Trump Legal Team waive their privilege . What is the strategy behind this . Last friday there was a discussion about whether there was a distraction because of all the russia issues. It may also be as some newspapers are reporting theres only one tape with trump and the rests are with journalists. So it may make some journalists look bad if they were trying to Court Michael cohen. What we can tell from Michael Cohen right now he does view himself as isolated, theres no allegiance anymore with donald trump. He is in essentially in a power seat right now in terms of what he can disclose or what hes willing to disclose if it does not m. D. Mine the privilege. I think about Michael Cohen and that old beetles song, in the end the love you make is sequel to t equal to the love you take. Trump is someone suffering from not being faithful and i think youre seeing from manafort to cohen to all the people who have pled this sort of lack of love. You have a theory about why his attorneys waived privilege, is that correct. I do, don. It is extraordinary. These are the most sacred conversations you could have maybe with your priest, your b rabbi and many instances your attorney as well. My experience was that the government is getting ready theres one big exception. Its called the crime fraud exception. If i can depot in as the government and prove there was an ongoing crime that was being committed here, there is no privilege. And the only reason as a defense lawyer, now, that i would waive this very, very important right that i have is because i knew that the government was going to win that fight and im trying to get out front on it. Wow. Okay. Dont go anywhere. Were going to talk more about that when we come back. Four updated drinks. Ri sus now with only the good stuff. Do you know how to use those . Nope. Get those kids some capri sun nope. At t provides edgetoedge intelligence, covering virtually every part of your healthcare business. So that if she has a heart problem the staff needs to know, they will theyll drop everything can you take a look at her vitals . Share the data with other specialists yeah, im looking at them now. Theyll drop everything hey. Take care of this baby yeah, that procedure seems right. That one too. At t provides edge to edge intelligence. It can do so much for your business, the list goes on and on. Thats the power of. When your patients tests come back. Capital one and hotels. Com are giving venture cardholders 10 miles on every dollar they spend at thousands of hotels. Brrrr i have the chills. Because of all those miles . And because ice. Is cold. Whats in your wallet . And because ice. Is cold. To keep our community safe. Before you do any project big or small, pg e will come out and mark your gas and electric lines so you dont hit them when you dig. Call 811 before you dig, and make sure that you and your neighbors are safe. Okay, back now with julia, and we happen talking about trump privilege. And you agree with guy. Explain. If i could agree 200 with guy i would agree 200 that the only reason that any defense attorney would raise privilege with this tape is if they knew that the government had a very good argument that the crime fraud exception applies. With the crime fraud exception says is even if you have a conversation with your lawyer but its in furtherance of a crime or part of a crime theres no attorneyclient privilege. So what guy is saying and what i agree with is whats happening here, the only reason that trump and his people are President Trump is waiving the privilege is they believe that they might lose and will likely lose that argument against the government, and they dont want to litigate that. So this is about getting ahead in the court of Public Opinion . Does it matter legally, that they waived . It matters legally to the extent now the government gets access to this tape. But youre absolutely right. Its a court of Public Opinion move to get ahead of that narrative. Because frankly, it hurts, i think, the court of Public Opinion in the future. Its a very shortsighted maneuver by President Trumps attorneys because now the court of Public Opinion, what the public will think you are selectively waiving privilege object on the things that help you or you think that are innocuous. So theres a strategy behind this. Julia, lets talk about paul manafort. His trial is delayed until next week. Are you surprised . No. Its such a short delay and i think given the nature of government documents the judge rightfully when you heard the proceedings just basically wanted to ensure there wasnt going to be a basis for appeal. This is such a short period of time. That ruling was like, you know, a glimmer of hope for manafort in like a series of pretrial motions and adjudications that, you know, are standing for him. Hes won nothing so far. Its just a delay what looks like is going to be a very difficult trial for manafort. And of course defendants plead, you know, the night before trial. So we still have that pending around manafort if he views himself as having no other options at this stage. The judge granted immuny to the five people you see up on the screen here. All of these witnesses appear to have been connected to Financial Institutions and real estate dealings of paul manaforts. What does that tell you about the upcoming trial . That tells me that they themselves or at least their lawyers believe and they believe that they have a legitimate fear of prosecution. That what they say in terms of tran transactions, in terms of documents, in terms of financial dealings, that could implicate them and draw them into this web of criminal corruption. What does this say . Are you surprised at all manafort appears to be willing to let this case go to trial, hasnt made a deal with prosecutors . What does that say about the strategy . What is his strategy . I think his strategy is to roll the dice and hope for the best. As the trial gets closer things will crystallize typically for defendants, which is why defendants do typically plead the eve of trial. Maybe he thinks this is going to be a last minute thing. Maybe he thinks people wont show up. But i will tell you the government witnesses will show up. The judge said hell allow prosecutors to mention his role in the Trump Campaign but only as it relates to a banker who allegedly sought to enroll in the campaign in exchange for loans. One of the prosecutors said theyll handle it in a discreet way. Do you think thats a win for the president . I think any reminder of why was manafort in the campaign and why were these people, these five that were disclosed today, seeking to help manafort essentially lie on these documents . They all wanted to work on the Trump Campaign. I thought even though it will be narrow what mueller seems to be doing at least in this stages the manafort case is not about the collusion, at least in this stage. But to the extent you keep the trump nexus alive, and part of the discussion, it becomes relevant not just for manaforts case but goodness knows if its going to go forward but for other cases down the pipe. Now we have a couple more who are going to speak, so we have at least 10 to 12 people around the mueller case who are talking. Thats a lot of people. I just wonder, guy, because mueller said the prosecutors wont bring up collusion, but do you think he cant prove it or its irrelevant when it comes to these particular charges . Don, youre going to hear it heres what youre going to hear next week in opening statements. Youre going to hear the charges which detail these expenditures, these antique rugs and all of these millions and millions of dollars, manafort was broke. And thats what the evidence is going to show. Now, in order to make money they have to show the governments going to show that he was in tight with trump, he was Trumps Campaign manage, he was meeting with people including these russians, and they were buying access. Youre going to hear in this trial discussion about the underbelly of politics and finances and how, look, its all about its not about the money but its about the money. Thats what its about. Thank you, guys. When we come back, the president s all caps threat to iran and how that country is responding. Onpro patients get their day back to be with family, or just to sleep in. The president rouhani, never ever threaten the United States again or you will suffer the consequences the likes few throughout history have ever suffered before. Were no longer a country that will stand for your demeanted words of violence and death. Be cautious. All right, lets discuss now. Major general spider marx is here and also samantha denegrad is here. Good evening to both of you. Welcome to both of you. Sam, the president s tweets a response to the earlier escalate tensions between the u. S. And iran . It certainly did, but president rouhani has historically had rhetoric against the United States, including when i was at the white house. But the difference is that we were at the brink of war in the first term under president obama. The iranians were very close to a nuclear capability. They were up to a range of a region. And don, we did everything we could to bring ourselves away from that brink, to deescalate that situation and look at other options for changing the iranians behavior. Thats where we got to the nuclear deal, which removed one of the security risks in the region. Where are we today . Secretary pompeo giving a speech support, iranian voices. I have to note, the president indicated a willingness to sensor american voices here at home. President rouhani is insulting President Trump and were in this verbal tit for tat. At the same time, the state department and President Trump areplementing a Concerted Campaign that looks and smells a lot like regime change. Excuse me. So, listen, general marks, President Trumps remarks didnt seem to scare off iran today. Its foreign minister tweeted this, he said, color us unimpressed. The world heard even harsher bluster a few months ago. Does that kind of talk from iran make you nervous . No, not at all. I need to tell you that words being exchanged between leaders both in washington and tehran really are not as meaningful as the posture that both of those nations have assumed. So, lets kind of review and sam did a good job of laying out what has occurred over the course of the last few years. Clearly, what we have is weve got a president who we ha we have a president who isnt going to abide this regime in tehran, and i dont think any administration wants to abide this regime. We have an immensely capable, the worlds most powerful military. There isnt a fight, if there was, if a fight was to occur, it really wouldnt be anything more than a slaughter that would occur, but we want to stay away from that. I mean, theres nothing to be gained by doing that at this point. So, look, tweets are are a tool, certainly, and words matter, but i would disagree with sam that the rhetoric h has the rhetoric certainly has been elevated, but the tensions have not. They kind of remain where they are. Sam, for those who criticize the president s language in tweets like this to iran, say its too harsh, would it be fair to say this approach worked with north korea, or thats to be determined . Ah, i dont think it worked with north korea, because i dont think theyve changed any behavior, but it did work in terms of getting put trump to the negotiating table. In a me veers wperverse way, the a negotiating tactic by rouhani to get the president very anxious and get him to come to the table to negotiate, to tell the world like he did at the singapore summit, guess what, we were so at each others throats, we got together, we signed an agreement, so, rouhani may be trying to use words to manipulate the president , but i want to point one quick thing out. Back in 2009, 2010, 2011, we talked about war with iran, a military strike, that was against Iranian Nuclear facilities. Those facilities have gone away. So, when the president talks about escalating in a military sense, im not sure what hes talking about. Is he insinuating were going to invade . Were going to go with war with iran in syria and iraq . Its clear to me in terms of what he means in answering irans threat with his version of fire and fury in this case. General marks, there were reports today that north korea has begun dismantlie inine inin testing areas. What do you make of this . Did that summit work . Well, no, its far too soon to say that summit worked. I think it was certainly, it with us a success that the chairman of the north korean communist party, kim, was able to sit down with our president. Thats great. But weve all been very, very skeptical about what those next steps need to look like, and it is not surprising at all that the president is probably frustrated and hes looking to see what the next step will look like, and is probably breathing down mike pompeos throat right now, saying, explain to me what i can anticipate next. In north korea, imagery is wonderful. Having spent my life in the world of intelligence and the various means of collecting that intelligence, imagery can provide a very particular, very narrow view of whats going on. Bull we really wont know until we can open doors, much like our challenge in iraq when we invaded. We wont know unless we open doors, we begin to interrogate some of their interrogate in a peaceful way, have communications and be able to uncover what is actually taking place. So, im still very skeptical in terms of making some discernible progress, relative to the summit in singapore. Thank you, general, thank you, sam. Thanks, don. Thank you for watching, everyone.
