This is cnn tonight. The fbi intensifying its search for a suspect or suspects responsible for packages with explosives inside. Were learning that all 10 packages were sent through the u. S. Postal system. Manila envelopes with bubble wrap lining. A forever stamps and all have targeted people or organizations who have been critical of President Trump. The secretary of Homeland Security says at least some of the packages were processed unflorida. The Police Commissioner says all packages are being treated as live devices. Why have none of the pipe bombs detonated . Good eve engning to all of you. At least 10 packages found so far. Now authorities believe several were processed at a mail facility near miami, florida. Frrps so part of this investigation is heavily focussed on florida. Its believed to be where several of the suspicious packages with pipe bombs went through and so what they were trying to figure out right now is whether the perpetrator or perpetrators lives in florida or whether this was just a facility where some of the packages moved through. Right now investigators are trying to figure out who is behind this. The concern is that there could be more pack nls out there. Right now we know of 10. I will say one Law Enforcement official i spoke with today said some of the forensic analysis helped narrow down the leads in terms of the hunt of who was behind this. The investigation is progressesing. A key question in all of this is why the devices did not explode. Whats your read on that . Theres been a lot of discussion on whether theyve been designed to invoke fear or intimitation. What these devices tell us is that some individual took the time to do the research to actually figure out how to make the device that could cause significant harm. Im told these devices could have been catastrophic. Frrts so either way, it doesnt matter whether or not the devuss were actually triggered to explode. What real a matters is this individual was sending a message that they had the ability and potential to make devices that could have been absolutely catastrophic. I think were going to figure out who did this and get to the bottom of it. The biggest concern is this individual could create devices that would be triggered when theyre being handled by just about anyone. How much planning would go einto an operation like this . The bomb making plus sending packages all over the country . This is something where someone wakes up in the morning like an active shooter kags. T case. It had to be well orchestrated how he know wheres exact addressess are. And the courier aspect, in terms of mailing devices, buildabomb and transport it. Maybe a month and six weeks. Unth in that period its likely he talked to people and people will wonder why did i sell Something Like this to someone a couple weeks ago . And the build up may have disclosed some clues. The one question we dont know is the persons background. In other words if its a Law Enforcement background a scientific background. Trrs that would make the creation of devices maybe easier. So part of what theyre looking at is a profile of the person determining how much knowledge they had before hand as they built and constructed these devices. Let me ask you this because weve been told i think a lot about the actual devices but Law Enforcement they dont tell you everything. Ive noticed theyre a lot more tight lipped. I dont know if you saw the press conference earlier. There are two key reasons why at this stage in the investigation. First oall of you want to see a lot of this evidence not out in the public sphere so if and when you find the suspect you can use that information as leverage during an interview. You dont want to get to the point of prosecution where its inadmissible uncourt. So there are reasons why were not learning more about these devices, these pipe bombs as the fbi called them. And theyre walking this fine line of saying this is is what you should look out for and not releasing so much where it could jeopardize the investigation. And were talking an ongoing threat. How do you think the president has handled the bombs being sent to two former president s, secretary of state and so on. . I try not to be overly critical of the president but i think of this idea that theres likely someone with mental instability responsible for this and its not the president , its the person who sent these bombs. And i think we all have to acknowledge it takes a degree of mental instability to destood do Something Like this. What we have to ask is what was the trigger . Every time someone decides to assassinate former president s of the United States or other high level officials, something caused them to do that. We have to ask ourselves whether or not the current rhetoric and unsome cases the violent nature of our rhetoric may have actually been the trigger. You could have someone mentally unstable and theyre responsible for this and its the case that the political rhetoric and environment right now actually may have been the trigger for Something Like this.
