So at that same press conference, his official expressed the importance of social distancing to prevent the numbers from increasing. What are those numbers . They are not numbers. They are people with coronavirus. More than 42,000 cases in the u. S. That is a jump of 10,000 cases from this time last night. The Surgeon General issuing this dire warning. I want america to understand. This week its going to get bad. You dont think people are taking it serious . I think there are a lot of people doing the right things, but a lot of people think this cant happen to them. As of tonight coronavirus has claimed the lives of at least 541 americans. That is more than 100 deaths in this country in just the last 24 hours. When asked tonight if he agreed with the Surgeon Generals prognosis, the president brought up the flu and car accidents. Again, i say we have a very active flu season, more than most. It is heading to 50,000 deaths, not cases, which is a lot. You look at automobile accidents which are far greater than any numbers we are talking about. That doesnt mean we are going to tell everybody no more driving of cars. We have to do things to get our country open. We have gone full circle now. The president s own experts has said this is not like the flu, it is deadlier and more contagious. Last week it seemed like the president got that concept. This week although we are just at the beginning of dealing with the crisis, the president said he expects social distancing to be gone soon. You say weeks not months. Have any doctors on your team said this is not the right path to pursue. I spoke to them today. Dont forget if it were up to the doctors, they may say shut down the entire world. We are up to 150 countries. Lets shut down the entire world. That would be wonderful. Lets keep it shut for a couple of years. You cant do that with a country especially the number one economy in the world. You cant do that. Worldwide there are more than 372,000 cases and more than 16,000 deaths. Direct director Surgeon General said it took 67 days to hit 100,000 cases, just 11 days to hit 200,000 and just four days to hit 300,000. Lets bring in kate. I saw social distancing in the briefing room. The president says things might get worse in this country and he is itching to scale back social distancing. What is the latest . He said he agreed with the Surgeon Generals assessment. It will get worse before better. The deadline when they will be making the decision is a week from today. They will decide whether to move forward with the guidelines or assess them. The president made clear in the press conference that hes leaning towards easing them. He said none of the doctors endorse it. He said they discussed it and he thinks they are okay with it, but he made clear it is not something they have pushed for. We know behind the scenes it is not something dr. Fauci and others said they feel comfortable. Are there details what they would do if the virus is not contained . They would say limit yourself to ten people or fewer. They want some businesses that shuttered their doors to reopen. If the state guideline is pretty strict, and they are in certain areas, not just new york and california, but pretty strict in North Carolina and others. Do they follow the state governors guidance . So many schools have closed until the end of the year. If the president decides to send people back to work, how does it work for those families whose children are not going back to school for the rest of the year . There are a lot of unknowns. You heard the conversation chris and i had. Do we know where dr. Fauci is . They said he was a briefing. He has missed them before. Standing on the stage for two hours is not the most effective move. But you cannot ignore this comes after dr. Fauci did that interview that sometimes he has to contradict the president when he says things that arent true or says things he hasnt advised him to do. Dr. Fauci has come forward to contradict the president even when they are in that room. The president is commenting on potential drug solutions. People say they would rather hear from someone like dr. Fauci. Dr. Fauci wasnt there, but the attorney general was there to talk about price gouging and hoarding of supplies. And i want to turnabout the stimulus bill. Where do things stand now . There are intense negotiations happening all day long into the late hours. It has been going on since this past friday, every night going late. Steven mnuchin and others are meeting for the fifth time today. They are trying to narrow down their differences. They have met with Mitch Mcconnell as well. Both sides are signaling there could be a deal as early as tonight. Reporters were told it could be done tonight. This was done on a day of high tension on capitol hill. Both sides are pushing to get this done. But these two sides are at war with Mitch Mcconnell accusing the democrats of acting recklessly and democrats saying they are trying to make it better. It is a sweeping bill of 2 trillion dollars that would help individuals and companies hurt by this crisis. What would the provisions look like, we should have a better idea what it would look like. What has been the hangup in these talks . Several provisions, but one of the things that has been a central part of negotiations is roughly 500 billion provided to the government to dole out to states, localities, companies that need that money. How does that get structured and oversight. That is one of the big things, but it sounds like they are getting closer to resolution. You spoke to House Speaker nancy pelosi today. What did she say . She was open to making this through. She say the if the senate bill was to the satisfaction of her and her numbers, they would be open to passing it. D democrats did propose their own bill today, 2. 5 trillion. She is trying to get the republicans to move closer to her direction. We expect them ultimately to be on the same page and vote. President trump said hes looking to end the social distancing in weeks, not months. Is that a good idea . Not only have we not hit our peak yet, but the picture from 10 to 14 days ago. The time interval from the time someone is exposed to symptoms, it takes a while. Do we think the spread in the country has gone down for some reason or that it has continued to go up . I think its clear it has continued to go up. The numbers are going up because we are doing increased testing, but it is clear the numbers are going up because there is more spread. Hong kong, a week and a half ago, they did a good job, but as soon as they let their guard down, you saw the numbers double within a few days. Its painful to do what we are doing. Its tough for the entire country, but if you dont do it, absolutely the numbers will go up. A Public Health official who says otherwise is probably not thinking it. It has hurt the economy. Everyone is worried about it. If we stop the social distancing and stop it too soon and the virus spreads like crazy again, will this all have been for naught . Will it go up and what we did was an exercise in futility . That is the concern. Look, its not just we know that younger people now are also needing to be hospitalized. 20 in the hospital are younger people. Don, this term has been used for several weeks, flattening the curve. I think there is this belief that over time, over the next year or so, most of the people, 40 to 60 of the people in this country are likely to get exposed. It is far more contagious than the flew. Flu spreads to 1. 2 people and this spreads to 2. 5 people. Its more contagious. The question is how fast does it occur . If you slow it down and not all of the people are rushing into the hospital, you are saving lives. You will get people out of the hospital and they are immunized or protected from the virus for a while. Thats the sort of goal here. If you dont do that, a lot of people will access the Health Care System quickly and that is the worstcase scenario. Some say this is a health emergency, some say an economic emergency, some say both. Listen to the president on this, dr. Sanjay. We have learned a lot. We have learned about social distancing, washing hands. You look at nebraska, iowa, many countries that are handling very well and not affected to the same extent, or frankly, not nearly to the extent of new york. Dr. Birks said herself only a few places havent had any. How do we know iowa wont have a surge down the road. People travel to big cities more and more, eventually it will get to smaller towns and places. We are talking about a little virus here. It doesnt respect borders or boundaries. Once it takes a foot hold, it will start to spread because it is a contagious virus. Maybe transport. Maybe it doesnt become as widespread as in new york city, but i think it is clear over the next couple of weeks, we will see communities around the country that will have more and more cases. Sustained Community Spread is something happening in the united states. Luckily, there may be measures in place to slow down how quickly people need medical care if they need medical care. Don, thats an important point as well. If you look at the united states, most of the people inl effected dont need to be hospitalized. Its around 12 or 13 . Most can recover at home. For those 12 or 13 which ends up to be 30 or 40 million people, you need to be sure they are not all accessing the Health Care System at the same time. As you are hearing, hospitals are already starting to run low on some of these supplies. Also testing. There may be more cases in places, but they just have not been tested. They may be there and they dont know about them. Lets talk about the possible drug that the president has been it outing a touting and talking about. Does it sound like they have enough drug to let people in less hard hit areas go back to work . Are they right about those things . I dont think it will happen that quickly. Everyone is hopeful there will be some sort of therapeutic like this. It takes time. Its an existing drug. It has been around for 86 years as an antimalarial drug. It does have some side effects, but it is wellknown. The only studies on human beings were on 26 people and 6 were excluded from the study. When we looked why the six people were taken out of the study, one person left the h hospital on their own. One could not tolerate it. Three people left and three people died. About 4 died. Small study. You wouldnt look at that at first blush and say thats going to be it necessarily. Maybe it is. Maybe in larger populations it ends up working really well and i think everybody would love that. I think now you will see those trials take place. I think what governor comeau talked about today was 10,000 treatments going to new york city as part of a clinical trial, see what worked. Compare them to similar patients that did not get the treatment. See if there is a benefit. That process takes time. We are talking months, not days or weeks. Always with the science. We have to be sure we dont have too many people infected all at the same time presenting at the hospital where we will overwhelm our capacity for health care. We have the surge. I spent two nights in the hospital. Monday night and left wednesday. Tell us how and when this all started for you. Sure, so i got a fever on friday march 13. That evening and the fever persisted through the next day and i experienced a cough. Fever continued. Sunday i was feeling better i thought i was on the monday and would be fine. Started planning to take a shower monday and get to the household tasks and sunday night into monday morning i developed vomiting and woke up with shivers. And developed what i now recognize was shortness of breath. At the time i was confused as to what the symptom was. It went throughout monday to the point i had to go to the emergency room. I couldnt speak and walk or eat. The breath was too difficult. So luckily talked to a doctor who convinced me it was time to go in and gave me oxygen. How long did it take the test in the hospital . Did you notice other young people there as well . I was quickly ushered into a room by myself. I didnt personally see young people. I was told there was a 30 yearold in the next room. They had been increasingly seeing younger patients and took them 12 hours to test me. And i was told initially i didnt qualify for the a test. I hadnt interacted with someone else to be known to be covid19 positive or traveled to china or japan. Italy and korea. Im not sure why i got tested when di. It did happen early in the morning on tuesday. You were in the hospital since you have been out sinz wednesday. You have to be quarantined for how much longer . I need to stay isolated until i test negative. So im waiting for a call from the department of health. Im supposed to call them and inquire about somehow setting up a test to see if im over this thing. You believed you didnt think it was a hoax. You thought young people were less susceptible at getting it. I work at the wellness and social justice. I took it seriously as an ally. I thought it would be my role. Protecting the elderly and immune suppressed. I thought i would ride it out at home. I was so reluctant to go to the hospital. I went at the last possible moment and im thankful to any partner and parents to convince me to go and talking to doctors. I was in denial how serious it could get. Were glad youre okay.
