Downright now and saying this is a great thing happening for our country. A great day for him and a great day for everybody. Great day for everybody. A great day in terms of equality. A great day in terms of equality . What is he talking about . The president was also asked about systemic racism. Heres how he handled that. Id like to sign this bill. By the way, whats happened to our country and what you now see has been happening. The greatest thing that can happen for race relations. For the africanamerican community. For the asian american. Hispanic american community. For women and everything. Whats your plan . Our country is so strong. Thats my plan. Well have the strongest economy in the world. Strong economy is one thing. Its important. It doesnt solve the problem of racism. First lets get to new york. With protestors. What are you seeing . As you can see a lot of Police Officers just standing by. Waiting to respond. We havent seen the same type of activity that we have seen for the last several nights. Just hours ago just as the curfew ended around 8 30. The new York Police Department moved in on a group of protestors marching peacefully on the upper east side. And around 8 30 they just decided that it was time to end the march. And so the new York Police Department made announcements and told people if they werent leaving they would be arrested. So they arrested 18 people. Marching on the upper east side. They were stopped by the police at 81st and park avenue. Whats different about tonight is that the police moved in earlier on this group. We saw other groups marching until about 10 00. For whatever reason tonight the nypd decided to move in earlier and they arrested and stopped the demonstrators around 8 30. That was the last group demonstrating passed curfew. Tomorrow there are a will the of events planned. More protests and demonstrations across the city. For saturday. All right. Thank you very much. I appreciate that. I want to bring in cnn white house correspondent. And former nfl player. Good evening to both. John, president seems to be equating a good jobs report and and kneeling. He doesnt get it, does he . Donald trump is reverting to two things that are comfortable territory for him. One is talking about money. Thats the economy. And he was exuberant over the jobs report. And the other is racial conflict and division. Thats been shot through his political career. To some extent through life before he was in politics. He has a model for his approach. That is nixon. He uses the same phrases, law and order. Silent majority. Nixon got himself elected in 1968 and again in 1972. The problem is twofold. First of all when nixon got elected in 1968 he was not the incumbent. He was running against a party that was residing over disorder and chaos. Donald trump is presiding over it. It doesnt work well that way. Second problem its not 1968 anymore. The country changed. Political attitudes changed slowly but they change. We saw that today. With the nfl and from leaders of the u. S. Military. And the president is on the wrong side of the changes. Speaking of roger good el. Heres the video. We the National Football league condemn racism. In the systemic oppression of black people. We the National Football league admit we were wrong for not listening to players earlier. And encourage all to speak out and peacefully protest. We the National Football league believe black lives matter. How significant is this reversal . Its a decent first step. But what a lot of people have said all day since this video has come out is he should have mentioned Colin Kaepernick. By name. And they havent done that. I think that is the thing that a lot of people still dont trust the nfl words because their actions have shown and proven otherwise that they do support or dont support the players. Efb though they started the Players Coalition and helped to push it. I was pleased to see the young nfl stars get together and say this is our league. This is our league. The league is three quarters threefourths black players and im glad they got together and wield their powers they havent tone before. Because immediately he came out with the video and said what he said. He said he held to the players demands of what they want to hear. He said it. Its a decent first step. Those steps need to be followed through with action. And concrete action. We saw some top ranked military turn on trump this week. Now the nfl. Are people realizing his moment is more powerful than their fear of him . This moment. Yes. I think the moment has been exceptionally powerful for the u. S. Military. One is the way they were used to deploy force against americans in ways that made Major Military leaders uncomfortable. The backdrop is the u. S. Military is one of the most successfully integrated Major Institutions in the country. Its more diverse than the country as a whole. U. S. Military doesnt fear diversity. It needs diversity. It strikes me that the National Football league is also a successfully integrated Major Institution in the American Life and i have to say maybe he can explain it, i have been astounded that it has taken them so long to move to this position. Astounded that for four years, Colin Kaepernick for simply kneeling in peaceful protest was blackballed by every team in the league. I dont get it. In any case, roger good el clearly felt the heat of the moment. And adapted. And it is those two defections from the president s side the u. S. Military and the National Football league. Pretty significant in the reelection year. Can you explain that the pressure is all that . From the football league. I think initially you have you look at the honest truth. That is that a lot of the owners support trump. They have given him money for his reelection campaign. They have given money for inauguration. Until we can get passed that, the conversation of why the nfl is just now coming out after years of seeing Colin Kaepernick but players all over the league kneeling and this is really become an international issue. Because adds everyone else in the world understands this is a human rights issue. This is not a political left and right issue. Conservative liberal. Its a human rights issue. It needs to be dealt with. Thank you so much. I appreciate you both. Now i want to go to cnn correspondent. You have this new reporting that the west wing is frustrated with the first lady response to the protests over george floyd death. What can you tell us about that . As usual the firts lady is somewhat out of step on messaging and theres a big difference. The President Trump was talking to the governors saying they were weak and looked like jerks. The first lady was calling for peace and healing. And it didnt go unnoticed by the west wing. They find that her opposing messaging to the law and order structure the president is putting forth is really counter entu ti. When the president tweeted about the looting and the shooting started and flagged by twitter. The first lady said this is a country that allows for safe protest. It this country needs to come together and unite. Certainly there are frustrating moments for the president and his aids. As the east wing keeps doing their own thing. You always say she doesnt do anything by accident. Is this a deliberate attempt to under mine her husband . Its hard to say. It certainly interesting to look at the timing sp specific messages and when he says one things that makes headlines and she speaks out. This isnt the first lady doing a ton of heavy lifting on this important thing thats happening in the nation. Shes not handing out Water Bottles to people protesting by any means. It is interesting shes chosen moments to contradict the harsh and real mean streak coming out of the west wing with language that does feel in a certain way that its purposefully opposed to what the president is saying. All right. Thank you so much. Bring in now former white house communication director. Anthony scaramucci. He interviewed chief of staff john kelly. Nice job, sir. Good to see you. Lets talk about your interview. You just thanked drew brees on twitter. For disagreeing with trump and being a role model for others to see his sort of callousness for what it is. Thats huge. Wow. I sank him or praised him. Its awesome hes doing that. You need people like him in the world to show the light to other people. The problem is the president is a leader and trying to split the country. The first name of the country is united. Hes trying to split it. We wants drew brees and the league to do that. They dont want to do that. Its wonderful. You asked general kelly about the former defense secretary. Mattis jaw dropping statement saying trump is dividing the country. Violating the constitution. And isnt mature enough to lead. Kelly agreed. That is a big teal coming from the president s former chief of staff. Yeah. If you saw the interview, it was very straightforward. I dont necessarily think the general was trying to break news as much as he was expressing patriotism in the country. The military holds the constitution sacred to its heart and take an oath. To the constitution. The point him and general mattis and admiral. The great men in the country are making is that the institution of the constitution and the Great Institution of the United States are more important than one man. So the notion that our military or National Guard would be used and between smoke canisters or tear gas, the clear the way for a photo op. It was a real low point in the institution of the presidency. I think that was a very important statement for him. It was a very predictable statement. Because if you ask all of them and they came out of the apolitical shell, i dont think theres very many of the great men that agree with what the president did. Ill play some of the interview. I think we need to look harder at who we elect. We should start all of us regardless of what our views are in politics. We should look at people that are running for office and put them through the filter. What is their character like . What is their ethics . Are they willing if theyre elected to represent all constituents not just the base . All of their constituents. And then look at the politics. I think maybe that was my favorite thing he said. He went there. Why does it seem hes unwilling to be 100 frank about President Trump . Its a very tough spot. He worked for the president. Its a tough spot for me. I got fired after eleven days. I save general kelly for saving my marriage. I got fired and tried to stay loyal to the president. You are trying to help the country. Youre a patriot. For two years i tried and he has done crazy things. Separating women from children in the immigration story. And disavowing the intelligence agency. Asking congresswomen to go back to countries. You know the list. I know the list. Were at a great moment where he would really like to divide the country and hed like to focus on a certain base of people trying to gin up the base and get them to turn out and win reelection. I have limited time. I want to get another part of the interview in. It deserves attention. The president likes to call himself a stable genius. You asked about that assessment. Is the president a stable genius . A stable genius. Um, hes whats a genius . I dont know what that is. I shouldnt comment on not qualified to comment on stable or unstable. I mean, that was a very long and telling pause. He wont say if the man is stable or unstable. Whats he going to do . You know hes unstable. He swore an oath to the constitution the general did. For 40 years he needed to be apolitical in the United States marine core. Youre not going to break out of your shell in two minutes. Its not going happen. I did ask him the question at the conference a year ago in las vegas. He had a more funny quip. He said i dont think hes stable or a genius. It was funny, everyone laughed. Its uncomfortable because he is disavowing the president. Agreeing with his friend mattie. And trying to be a balanced and fair guy. Over the last year i have learned a lot about general kelly. I have respect for him. 40 years in the marine core. A gold star family member. Hes a brilliant guy a very well read guy. I wouldnt mistake that cautiousness for anything other than 40 years in the marine core and wants to stay true to that nature. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this interview. Nice job. Thank you so much. Hey, good to be here. A week that began with peaceful protestors gassed ends with the president losing support of military top brass and the nfl. What will the impact be with election day five mornths away . No, well not get a diploma or a degree of any kind. But we are entering a new chapter in our lives. Our confidence is shaken; our hearts cracked. The kind of a crack that comes from the loss of a job; from life plans falling apart. We didnt ask for it. But we are rising to meet it. And how far weve come isnt even close to how far we can go. We just have to remember how patient we were. How strong we can be. how strong you can be. and remember this; theres a crack in everything for a reason. How else can the light get in . Tomorrow starts today. George floyd was killed in police custody. Lets discuss now. He was a president ial adviser to nixon, ford, reagan and clinton. And a National Political reporter for the new york times. Good evening to both of you. Thank you so much. Massive demonstrations all week. Huge protests are planned this weekend for d. C. , new york, l. A. , atlanta, chicago and florida. First draft of history for the week. I think this is another episode of whats been long ark of activism that tries to place the into context what we know is a pandemic of violence from police onto black americans. I think it has a long arc through history. Reignited in terms of black lives matter and ferguson. That continued on through the trump era. This is going to last a question of systemic and ongoing racial justice. And what protestors are pushing for is not a single response or single policy but a reshaping and rethinking of american political and economic pour. That allows people for there not to be another viral video. Another hash tag of name we dont know already. We see a president who is not responded to that moment with the kind of crisis leadership we have come to expect. We saw incred bl dramatic empbts unfold this week. Monday. Tear gassed peaceful protestors outside the white house. He did it so so called to have a photo op. Will that day go down as the most undemocratic day in his president ial history . I think it will be one of the most reprehensible and dumbest days. He has given the opposition so many video clips now that are memorable. That are history were written today would be harsh about the president. We have never seen anything like this. We have crisis of all merged into each other. The pandemic crisis. We have the jobs crisis and the crisis over racial justice. And of those three, in my judgments the president has botched two of them. He botched the pandemic. Had he moved earlier 35,000 people might have not have perished. Hes botching this whole question over racial justice. That dumb photo op. So the result of this is hes politicized the pandemic and militaryized the Racial Injustice question. That speaks very ill of him. And i think the historians were to write today they would condemn. They may look back at turning point. The dam started to break when generals came out against the president. And we saw the n if, l movement today. The dam is breaking against him. Whether it will be a turning point for voters is up in the air. Democrats should not be complacent. They are only five points ahead. A lot can change. Especially if the economy comes barrelling back. If we can put that photo back up. That is so ridiculous. And so embarrassing. Look at that. Its just its laughable. Anyway. The president today reiterated the need to quote dominate any violent protestors which he did on that day. When he took that picture. He totally ignores the issue that everyone else is talking about. That is the systemic racism. How Law Enforcement treats black people. Why cant he address the real issue . There are things President Trump has changed on has flipflopped positions on throughout his political life. This not really one of them. He had been consistent in terms of encouraging Police Officers and Law Enforcement to be rough, to dominate without care about si civil rights or complaints. He encouraged that in the campaign stop. Hes shown no interest in terms of looking at the question of systemic racism by itself. Today when reporters pushed him on what he would do for a plan about systemic racism. He said well have a good economy. The Campaign Position is that the economy was doing well and fine before. The covid19 crisis. Certainly the issues were persisting beyond them. This is an issue that requires a very specific look at the addressing inequity and economic and racial inequality. Thats not something the administration has shown a consistent willingness today. Throughout his public life. That has to be the last word. From a different generation. He doesnt understand how culture has changed. 35 years old and younger more than half the population now are people of color. President doesnt understand that. Politics changed. Culture is changing thank goodness. I appreciate it. Thank you for your comments. And word of wisdom. On this day 1968. Robert f kennedy made his last speech. His words on Division Still ring true. The back in 1968 on this same day, robert f. Kennedy made his last speech. And his words are still relevant to those protesting today. Take a listen. This has been going on within the United States of the last three years. The division the violence, the society. The division whether its between black and white. Or the war on vietnam. We can work together. Were a great country. And a compassionate country. Joining me now keri kennedy. The daughter of robert kennedy. Its so good to see you. Thank you for joining me. We hear those words from your dads last speech and his message. It rings true today. Maybe now more than ever. Well, you know the thing he talked about institutional violence. Especially in cleveland. The Cleveland City club the night after Martin Luther king, jr. Died. He talked about the antiblack violence that has been in the country for now for 401 years. And the need to stop those institutions of violence and thats what we need to focus on today. We need to defund the police. We need to redirect the funds to Community Base programs. And housing. Education and healthcare. And mental healthcare. We need to deincarcerate the jails. Address mass incarceration. We need to end cash bail. Theres so much that needs to be done in this country. To stop this antiblack violence thats been here since the start. I saw hefts he was just on my show talking about we are living in the part of history right now that people will write about. Right . Just look at all that is happened just this week. Its true, isnt it . To me this is a time of profound pain and sadness but its also a moment that we have to harness. We have to harness the momentum of this moment. And push forward. Theres going to be a time when protestors are going to get off the streets and people will go back to their lives. This is it. For those of us who care about the issues for those of us who want to stop the antiblack violence in our country, we need to seize this moment. We need to seek out those local black led institutions. And support them. We need to educate ourselves. Support these organizations. And thats what we robert f. Kennedy and hul rights have been doing for 52 years and well continue to do that. I needed to hear that. Especially after this last week. I want to play part of another speech from your father. That probably one of the best American Speeches of all time. Theres some sadness obviously in that speech. Its 1968. Speaking to a black crowd 234 indianapolis and had to inform many of them Martin Luther king, jr. Has been assassinated and said this. We can do well in this country. We will have difficult times. We have had difficult times in the past. We will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence. It is not the end of lawlessness and disorder. The vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in in country want to live together. Want to improve the quality of our life. And want justice for all human beings. That abide in the land. Gosh. We really need that so much today. The level of empathy and compassion. As you know riots swept the country from Martin Luther king, jr. Assassination. But not in indianapolis. Where is that level of compassion now . I want to point something out about that. In my father had beautiful words that night. Expressed incredible compassion and emotion and empathy. And talked about his own brother dying at the hands of a man with a gun. A white man. The reason his voice was heard in that crowd was not just because of his beautiful words. But because of the years and years of working with people in communities of going to mississippi delta and wats. Or working hand and glove with leader like john lewis. The person who organized that rally that night. I think theres an out pouring right now of white people who are saying i want to help. I want to get involved. You cant just as a white politician stand up there and say im for better policing. Thats not going to do the trick. Go into the community. Sit and listen. You need to take the lead from the black leaders who have felt this pain and lived with this and who need to lead us in what the priorities need to be. Then you have a platform to give a speech like my dad gave. Keri, thank you so much. Thank you. You are the perfect person to have on right now. At the end of the week. Thank you. I love you. I love you so much. Were friend. And i love you. I cant wait to have more conversations like this and learn more from you and just when we dont have to socially distance. Thank you so much. This is a big hug from me. Take care. Protestors have been blasted with pepper spray, shoved by police and shot with rubber bullets. Im about to cry. Sorry. The damage is brutal. Take a look at this my next guest after she was shot with a foam bullet. She speaks out after the break. There he is. Oh, wow. Youre doing, uh, youre doing really great with the twirling. Dad, if you want to talk, i have a break at 3 00. Okay, okay. Im going. Im gone. Like like i wasnt here. [ horn honks ] keep keep doing it, buddy. Switch to progressive and you can save hundreds. You know, like the sign says. Switch to progressive and you can save hundreds. Heres what we want everyone to do. Count all the hugs you havent given. All the hands you havent held. All the dinners you didnt share with friends. The trips you havent taken. Keep track of them. Each one means one less person vulnerable, one less person exposed, and one step closer to a healthier community. So for now, keep your distance. But dont lose count. Well have some catching up to do. You were shot in the face with a foam bullet. You arent able to open your right eye yet. Is it permanent damage . Do you know . Im not sure yet. Over the next few weeks or so i have to go back and visit additional doctors to see if theres permanent damage or additional damage beyond what im already aware of. Why did you want to be out there . For me growing up i always heard about my great aunt. And she was a civil rights activists and one of the messages my family told me about is for her she always said that its the responsibility of everyone to ensure that everybody has equal rights in this country. And that if that is something that we all want, you have to get out and do something. This past week seeing videos of george floyd. Seeing and remembering other videos of individuals that look like him going through those experiences. It made me realize i dont want to be home when people are out there voicing their opinion. I want to be out in the streets with them. Because were all on the same page and understand something needs to change. I want to show this. Its graphic. This video of you. Its moments after. You are bloody and being led away. What were you feeling and thinking in that moment . At that moment, everything slowed down for me. When i was hit i felt this pressure and i immediately hit the ground. All this was done within seconds. There were people around me that picked me up and got me to a car and got me to the hospital. Throughout the entire time, especially once i got in the car and i saw the blood, im thinking have i really been shot . Is this the end of the thee hours i have been at the protest and everything has went well and met so many wonderful people. This is how it ends is me being shot and in the hospital. Where do we go from here . Its important that we recognize that there is a systemic issue with the excessive u excessive use of o force in the country. What i want is for the system that have their knees on our necks to get off. This cant happen again. This cant happen to anyone including people who dont look like me. We want someone that is going to be put in power of the country to be elected that will understand that black lives matter. Understand that because were saying that black lives matter it doesnt mean that other lives dont matter. It means that currently and throughout history, black lives havent been valued. And that cant happen anymore. It never should be another time when someone is attending a peaceful protest. Exercising their right as an american and someone leaves that event with a bullet in their head. Shot with a bullet. Beyond that, i got to go home. Thats one of the things that i keep telling my family and friends. I had pain. I dont know what further damage i have. I was able to go home. And there are too many instances people dont get that opportunity to go home. I have to say your great aunt would be proud. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Be well. Keep us updated on your progress. Thank you so much for having me. So everyone, the moment you have been waiting for. Actress, author, activist, Jennifer Lewis has a message about George Floyds death. She wants everyone to get on deck and take your knee off our necks. Listen. Take your knee and privilege off my neck. Its time for this entitlement and injustice to get checked. A reality tv star. Nobody wants a wall. All hands on deck, take your knee off my neck. You might know her as ruby on black. Jennifer lewis is here. I am so grateful youre here. Thank you so much. We just we heard part of that song in your response to what happened to george floyd. How did you feel, when you first saw that video . Well, i was outraged. I was numb. I had a lot of anxiety. You know, i knew that i had to sit out of pure necessity and passion and compassion and sit down and write this song. This is how this is how i expressed myself. Nina simone said it is the artists duty to reflect the times, and thats what im doing. These protests, all across the country, are really speaking to people. And people are speaking up. What do you think about the outpouring of, both, anger and support, and the young people and the diversity . What do you think . Im glad i got the opportunity to thank the the millions upon millions of people around the world, from new zealand to south africa, from paris to germany, i wish i had time to name them all. Let me just say thank you. Thank you for marching, in support of the cause. Were all in this together. People are risking their lives, in the middle of a pandemic, to come out and say thats enough. And i want to read this. I wrote this before the super bowl last year. When they were complaining about kaepernick kneeling. And this was the morning that the synagogue was burned. My girlfriend called me, and i had just had enough. Everybody, check your soul at the super bowl cause thats enough. Take away their fun before they shoot your son. How you gonna go out there and dribble a ball . And how you gonna go out there and and and i dont know be an athlete and then you get home, and your son has been shot down. Weve got to stand together, i think, at every sports event, from now on, when we come back together. Everyone should take a knee. Were not disrespecting the flag. Were holding it up, because it says the home of the brave and free. We should be able to protest, peacefully, on one knee. And why is that, ms. Lewis . Because our ancestors took two knees, on the cotton fields. And we have a right to take one. And rand paul sitting up there, not standing in the way of an antilynching bill. What is that about . Jennifer, i just let you talk because i just i love you. Im amazed. I love your passion. I know you want to give us a little more of that song. And so, we will end the show with that. Ms. Jennifer lewis, thank you for being and sharing your message and thank you for watching. Everyone, here is Jennifer Lewis. Take it away. And i want the millennials to know that my generation is behind you. Dont stop. Progress is being made. And when i say all hands on deck, im talking to all people, everywhere all hands on deck, take your knee off of our necks take your knees off of our necks come together, people, were all in this together. Not only are people risking their safety by speaking out and go confronting police, which is something most people never do in their lives. They are also putting themselves at greater richk risk from a virus thats already killed 109,000 in this country. A virus which is still here, still transmittable, still killing people all around the world. That is how urgently people want real and lasting change in the wake of George Floyds killing by police. How badly they want an end to what has been a long running injustice to africanamericans in this country and
