Welcome back. Youre watching cnn to our viewers around the world and the u. S. , thank you for joining us. Im natalee allen in the United States. The outrage remains but the violence has waned in ferguson, missouri. Who are you . Mike brown. Demonstrators took to the streets of the st. Louis suburb friday night, but the protests were peaceful. The funeral is planned for monday for michael brown, the black teenager fatally shot during a confrontation with a Police Officer. A grand jury has begun hearing evidence in the case. Our Stephanie Elam joins me now live from ferguson. We just heard from captain ron johnson. Stephanie, what is the feeling there and what was his report . I think overall, natalie, when you take a listen, it was a successful report because things moved in the trend we have seen all week getting better. Listen to what he had to say about last night. Tonight once again foot traffic copied to be reduce along west florissant avenue. We had to respond to fewer incidents tonight. There were nom molotov cocktails tonight, no fires, no shootings and we did not seize a single handgun. Again tonight, we deployed no smoke devices, no tear gas and no mace. And again tonight, no Police Officer fired a single bullet. And also whats noteworthy here, as well is that there were zero arrests tonight up till this point. A change from where we saw from wednesday night when there were 47 arrests. I believe there were seven last night. The night before that six. Really moving down to no interaction. Moral positive interaction between the police force and row protesters and people from the Community Just out on street for sort of a it felt sort of like a block party, not as exciting as that but the energy out there was way more peaceful and much more calm. Natalee . Some people who came into ferguson who dont live there who came in from other parts of st. Louis just to show support. What did they have to say to you . Thats true. We saw i spoke to a white couple who came here from another pat of st. Louis. They just wanted to show their support and said the reception had been very strong for them as they were out walking around. Both told me they do believe that racial profiling happens and that they need to do something. The one thing they were very clear on is that race issues arent going to get better unless we Start Talking about them in america. They say this is not a problem thats just key to st. Louis but they said that has been reverberating under the surface for many, many years now. And it just finally bubbled over here. They werent totally advised this has happened but wanted to get out there to show support for the idea that if we could start working together as americans that maybe things will continue to get better. Thats what they wanted to hear. They said the reception out here was totally fine when they came out. Of course, meekal browns public funeral will be held on monday. That will likely spark more discussions. Whats expected from his funeral we know about . Right. We do know it will be in the late morning on monday. And we know that it is open to the public. We understand that the sanctuary can hold 5,000 people and theyre setting up overflow rooms, as well because they do expect such a wide ranging attendance for people to come say goodbye to this young man. If you think about it, this community hasnt had time to digest the loss of mike brown or to mourn his loss. And so there are a lot of people who have been waiting for this moment to actually reflect on the young man at the center of all of this activity over the last two weeks. Monday we should see that happen and cnn will be there. And we hope for quiet weekend until then. Thank you, of knee elam for us live in ferguson. We turn to iraq now. We want to warn you the video youre about to see is not just disturbing to see but also to listen to. It was taken during a horrific mass killing at a sunni mosque in iraqs deia la province. Suspected shiite gunmen fatally shot at least 70 worshipers and wounded at least 17 others. Sunni lawmakers blame shiite militias for the attack and have now walked out of talks aimed at creating a unity government in iraq. Were covering the story throughout the country. Anna coren is following developments in the north of the country for us. We will go to ana in a moment for the update on the fight against isis. Lets begin with jamana kaurn a couragea. What the fallout be as the country tries to unite under a new government to bring together the shiaen an sunni factions . Natalie this sort of attack was reminiscent of the sort of attacks that we used to see in iraq back in 2006 and 2007. At the height of the he cantarian violence. Whenever you see an attack like this here, theres always fear that this could reignite that vicious cycle of attacks and counterattacks that really drove the country to the brink of civil war back in those days, days known by iraqis as they call them as the dark days of iraq. Now, on the political scene this really complicates matters, too. As you mentioned, the sunni lawmakers, a number of main political sunni parties in parliament announced they are walking out, not taking part in the government negotiations until the. He were traitors of this attacking are arrested and brought to justice. After speaking to lawmakers last night. Theyre saying this is not an isolated incident that this is the late laest in a series of incidents they say targeting sunni civilians and no one they say has really been brought to justice and they have had enough they say that they have a duty to their constituents that they have to stand up right now even though this could really complicate the political process and the government formation process. And its really not clear right now natalie, if this is political posturing during this time of intense negotiations for government formation or if this is a move that will hold, but nonetheless, it really complicates matters, makes it a much harder task for a Prime Minister designate Hader Al Abadi who already has been facing big challenges to try and regain the trust of the sunni politicians, the Sunni Community to try and bring them on on board a key factor in the fight against isis is a unity government, a truly inclusive government that will include the untrophies to try and undo what Prime Minister Nuri Al Maliki has done over the past few years. His sectarian policies have sidelined them in politics and the Security Forces, shia dominated Security Forces they say have persecuted them. This is going to be a tough one for haith hadider al abadi to ty and bring them back into the negotiating table. Right, because without this, what is left for iraq . Without some kind of government coming together, how can they possibly stand up to this spread of isis and the terror were seeing in parts of the country . Well, natalie, some see this government formation hater al r Haider Al Abadi as the last cannes for saving iraq right now. He needs to bring together the sunnis who were marginalized, the kurds who have gone into serious political disputes with baghdad. Its a very, very tough task. Weve seen in the past isis really does exploit a situation like this. It strives op sectarian divisions and it tries to ignite and reignite the sectarian war in this country. And unless you bring on the sunnis as we saw back in 2006 and 2007, u. S. Military strategy that basically recruited superny arabs in the fight against these extremists from within their communities, they turned on al qaeda and that really changed the situation here. So there is always fear that upless the sunnis are on board, that isis will have a place to strive and grow in iraq. Ja mon na karaj ji, thank you. New videos showed dozens of yazidi men being forceded to convert to islam. The video is said to have been shot in Northern Iraq. The yazidis are one of iraqs smallest and oldest religious minorities. In recent weeks, isis has stormed nz villages in Northern Iraq lead together death of hundreds and the displacement of thousands more and as you know, women and children have been taken. U. S. , iraqi and Kurdish Forces continue their battle against isis fighters in that part of the country. Anna coren joins me live in erbil with the latest from there. Certainly this country more so than baghdad has seen what isis can do. Ana . Yeah, thats right, natalee. Theres intense fighting go going on in so much of the country. The peshmergaen an iraqi forces trying to push back isis and the advances they have made. Yesterday, ja lala, the township of 50,000 people, 70 miles northeast of baghdad is where the focus of the fighting is taking place. Isis took over that township less than two weeks ago. That is a strategic place for the kurds because it links kurdistanton baghdad. So them are desperate to get it back. We understand through twitter one of isiss twitter accounts that 50 of its fighters were killed. They are vowing revenge. But its not just in ja lala and the surrounding areas that fighting is occurring. Up in mosul dam which is where we were earlier this week, there has been fierce fighting, even though whilst we were there with the peshmerga, we were confident they were able to push back the militants. It would seem that they are digging in and the u. S. Has been coming to the aid of the peshmerga up there. There have been 60 air strikes in total just around mosul dam. A total of 93 across the country conducted by the United States. But as i say, the majority of them up at mosul dam. This of course, natalie, despite the fact that isis has said if these air strikes continue, we will kill a second american journalist stephen sotloff. He was seen in that video after the gruesome beheading of james foley. Natalie . Yes, we have already seen the horror of what happened to jim foley. We know that the kurds are outgunned by isis troops. Well talk more about the power of isis coming up. Anna coren for us in erbil. The fight against isis is not restricted to iraqs borders. U. S. Officials say america is gathering intelligence on the movements of isis within syria and considering air strikes against isis targets there. Is and three years sense the start of the civil war in syria, new battles rage, this video posted on social media purportedly shows a battle between syrian soldiers and rebel fighters. We have been unable to verify the authenticity. The United Nations says the death toll in syria has at least doubled over the course of of a year. The u. N. Human Rights Office estimated more than 191,000 people were killed between march, 2011 and the end of april this year. The brother of james foley is speaking out about the beheading if of the american journalist by militants. Michael foley says the u. S. Could have done more to try to save him. We have extensive coverage ahead on Global Reaction to foleys death, the hunt for his killer and an interview with Michael Foley about his brother. And theres more coverage of the situation in ferguson, missouri, to come. Later, we will hear from children everyone ferguson. What are their thoughts after what theyve seen and heard . Plus, is this convoy sending aid or russian aggressioning into ukraine . You tell them how much you want to pay, and they help you find a policy that fits your budget. I told you to wear something comfortable this is a polyester blend whoa uh. Little help . I got you unh its so beautiful man should we Call Security . No, this is just getting good. The name your price tool, still only from progressive. A russian convoy has now crossed the border into Eastern Ukraine carrying what russia insists is humanitarian aid. Russia says it had approval to cross the border. Its a claim officials in kiev dispute. The map youre seeing now shows the journey this convoy made to the eastern ukrainian border. Is this russian aid or russian aggression. Cnns diana magnay has more from Eastern Ukraine. This russian convoy entered ukrainian territory without the permission of kiev and without the escort of the International Red cross. Who said they couldnt be guaranteed safe passage. So that means have you 227 russian trucks on ukrainian soil apparently filled with humanitarian aid although the icrc werent able to inspect more than 34 of the trucks that went through. Russia said it couldnt wait any more that the situation, the humanitarian situation in luhansk was so dire it had to move and move fast. There is no doubt that the situation there is dire. There is no running water. There is no electricity, Food Supplies are very low for those inhabitants who have braved the shelling and who have stayed in luhansk. But the fear remains this russian convoy is more than that, that it is a trojan horse brought in possibly to resupply the rebel who have been losing ground to the ukrainian advances in recent weeks. And it also means that the Ukrainian Army may have to put a hold on its military offensive at a time when it is really making significant inroads against the rebels in this conflictscarred corner of Eastern Ukraine. All the while, nato says russia is building up its troops once again on the border with ukraine. Diana magnay, cnn, ukraine. And coming up here on cnn, why hamas carried out a brutal and public execution of 18 palestinians. Hamasrun television says a man and a girl were killed and at least a dozen people were wounded in an israeli air strike on a house in gaza city, friday. Al aqsa tv aired video of rescuers scrambling to pull the victims from the rubble. Earlier israels Prime Minister warned hamas would pay what he called a heavy equipment for a attack on a parking lot that killed a 4yearold boy. The Israeli Military first said it was fired from the vicinity of a u. N. School in gaza used as a shelter. It later retracteded that saying the launch site was a school hamas you had as a shelter. Hamas operatives executed 18 suspected informants for israel to death in gaza friday as ian lee reports, the killings were brutal, swift and very public. And we warn you, some of the video youre about to see may be disturbing. Images of men sentenced to die. Hamas released these photo of gunmen clad in black with a guilty accused of treason by collaborating with israel. Their ite identities concealed possibly to avoid embarrassing their families or if theyre high ranking hamas members to hide the depth of penetration by israels Intelligence Service. We dont know much about these men. But what we do know is that the very public executions send a strong warning to other would be collaborators. No sympathy for the condemned found here. This is a good punishment for them. The executions come right after israeli air strikes killed three top commanders of hamass military wing. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the countrys Intelligence Service for the operation. Its unknown if these men were involved. The palestinians have long struggled with collaborators. In 2012, this video shows an accused man being dragged behind a motorcycle. A driver warns over would be turn coats of a similar fate. The question arises why would a palestinian betray his countrymen . Theres the obvious financial incentive as well as the potential for people to be blackmailed into becoming collaborators. Hamas has asked all those who fell in the mud of treason, to turn themselves he was in and said they would be shown mercy. We dont know what that mercy is. All Legal Proceedings have been kept behind closed doors. At least 18 accused have been executed so far. That number is likely to grow. Ian lee, cn n cnn,s go city. Were turning to the worlds weather. Rains have led to flash flooding in chicago, illinois. Ivan cabrera joins with us more about it. People getting to the Grocery Store on boats. Incredible scenes coming out of chicago, especially burbank southwest of chicago getting hit particularly hard. Look at the radar here in the last 24 hours. These were the thunderstorms that came in through the overnight hours. Always dangerous when you get rain in the middle of the night and people dont know how deep the water is. We got 4. 4 inches in four hours. An inch an hour. That is unbelievable amount of rain and their Monthly Average is five inches. You know what that did. A break now but i think we have more storms brewing on the way tomorrow. People getting around in boats. Thats exactly whats been going on here and drivers, my goodness, friday, you know, natalie specifically everybody trying to get to point b quicker than other typical days. And so it was quite a mess there in the chicago area. I dont think well get four inches in four hours tomorrow but i think additional rainfall could be problematic for some official flooding. Severe weather not out of the question. The storm prediction center, this bulls eye for damaging winds, hail, tornados, dakotas and western minnesota will be getting in on that. But the big story in the southeastern u. S. , you are begging for rainfall here because thats the only way youll cool off. Excessive heat warnings from st. Louis all the way down into the panhandle of florida. Were talking about temperatures that are going to be into the 90s. Because of the tropical moisture, it is going to feel like its about 105 to 110. So stay indoors. Notice washington, d. C. , 75 degrees. That is a cool front that is going to be coming in backdoor style because they usually come from the north and west. This one slides in from the north and east and it eventually, natalie will come here to atlanta and well begin to cool us off on monday. Ill be getting back. Until then, indoors. If you have to be outdoors, mucha agua. Thank you very much. How badly did the Obama Administration miscalculate the Current Crisis in iraq and could the u. S. Expand its air strikes against isis to syria . Coming up, ill talk live with an analyst and former u. S. Diplomat about the situation. Journalist james foley died at the hands of isis. Still ahead it, his brother tells cnn how he hopes james will be remembered. Jims really, really my hero. And i think hes a hero for many people and i really just hope that that legacy carries on. In our headlines this hour, the video youre about to see is disturbing. It comes from iraq and it was taken during a horrific mass killing at a sunni mosque in iraqs diyala province. Suspected shiite gunmen fatally shot at least 70 worshipers and wounded at least 17 more. Sunni lawmakers blame shiite militias. There was another night of peaceful protests in ferguson, missouri, in the u. S. Where anger boiled over after a black teenager was shot and killed by a white Police Officer. Crowds are still in the streets of the suburb of st. Louis but theres been little or no violence and it was Just Announced a short while ago there had been no arrests on this night. A grand jury meanwhile has begun reviewing evidence in the shooting. A russian convoy crossed the border into Eastern Ukraine carrying what moscow many doubt that its an all humanitarian. Russia says it had approval to cross the border. Officials in kiev dispute that. One ukrainian official called this a direct invasion. We turn now to more on iraq and isis. The big question now, what should the west do next . With isis trying to expand its reach in parts of iraq and syria, u. S. President barack obama now finds himself being pushed toward possible military action in syria. We get more now from Barbara Starr at the pentagon. U. S. Officials tell cnn there are longstanding and on going talks inside the administration about increasing air strikes in iraq and even the possibility of tailored air strikes inside syria against specific isis targets. Were considering whats going to be necessary to deal with that threat and not be restricted by borders. And the pentagon is divulging nothing. We dont telegraph our punches. I think you can rest assured that the leadership here in the pentagon understands the threat posed by this group. Talk of military options stirred up by this comment by defense secretary chuck hagel about the threat of isis and its ranks of 10,000 fighters. Oh, this is beyond anything that weve seen. So we must prepare for everything and the only way you do that is you take a cold steely hard look at it and get ready. Officials are taking pains to emphasize that any military action would only be part of a longterm strategy against isis involving diplomacy and action from other countries in the region. U. S. Military leaders continue to make the case that air strikes alone will not defeat isis. That countries in the region must band together to defeat their radical ideology. Barbara starr, cnn, the pentagon. And joining me now from beirut is a former u. N. And u. S. State Department Official to talk more about the spread of isiss terror across iraq. David, thank you for joining us. Thank you first of all, president obama reportedly referred to isis earlier this jeer as the junior varsity. Today u. S. Officials are saying isis could be not just a threat destabilizing through iraq but a threat here on u. S. Soil. Start with how the u. S. Miscalculated the abilities of isis. They sure have elevated to varsity now. Estimates suggest that the number of fighters with isis is much larger than the 5,000 to 10,000 initially estimated. I just got back from iraq. Officials estimate it could be five times that. Thats grown a lot over the last few months. Certainly some cues were missed especially as isis grew in strength in syria and there were many warnings that isis had plans to attack iraq at least six months before it did in june. Its a little bit perplexing as to why the iraqi forces were not more ready for that. But i think theres been a wakeup call across the world as to the growing strength of isis and the need to really defeat them not just contain them. And how has isis been able to organize like theyve had and theyve got so much money and theyve got reach on oeshl media, obviously training and so much weaponry. What else do are we learning about them and their tactics and their power . Well, as they accumulate more territory, this he become more powerful. And theyve really developed a unique approach to this. For instance, are if iraq, they have taken over towns including the large city of mosul first they bring in fighters, theyre ruthless. They execute anyone who they believe will challenge them in the future. Then they get the rest of the population to wear obedience to them. After that, they bringing in sharia counsels and force the locals to obey the sharia councils. They bring in tax administration. Theyre doing things like issuing licenses, license plates, so they take over the entirestration of the city which really puts a stranglehold on the local people. Yeah, and youve worked extensively throughout iraq for a long time as an advisor. What are the chances now a unity government can come together . Weve just seen this attack on the sunni mosque that has thrown more trouble in the talks to try to bring this government together. What is it going to take to bring this government together and so they can try to push out isis . Well, i think theres a very good chance there will be a unity government in baghdad. It certainly could form behind the new Prime Ministerial candidate, Haider Al Abadi. I think its going to take more than just having a government in baghdad to have the execution and capacity to take on isis. The iraqi forces certainly are not ready to do that. The Peshmerga Forces in kurdistan are more unified and shown more success on the battlefield, but they really dont have the weapons right now to confront isis isis. Theyre outmanned, outgunned by isis. Theyve had some success now on the battlefield because they have air strikes giving them cover from the u. S. I think in conclusion its really going to take outside help primarily from the u. S. Hopefully from some of the other countries to work in cooperation with the Peshmerga Forces and the iraqi forces to defeat isis. We appreciate it your expertise and your time, david tafuri joining us from beirut. Thank you. The white house is calling the execution of journalist james foley a terrorist attack on the United States and numerous countries have joined forces to find foleys killer. The uk is a focal point. Thats where its believed his killer may be from. Atika schubert reports from london the race is on to identify the man who killed james foley. His face is hidden but there are clues especially his voice spouting militant propaganda in an unmistakable british accent. Any attempt by you, obama, to deny the muslims their rights of living in safety under the islamic caliphate will result in the blood shefd your people we will not show the video. It is too graphic but we did ask a number of voice analysts to take a listen to the audio. Heres what they said. This is a guy who is spent most of his formative years in and around london i would say. He may well have been born in another country. He may well have another language as his first language but he ended up speaking very much in the same way as other people in the east end of london and south london, as well. Our experts all agree the man is under 30 years old and grew up in britain from a very young age. He comes from a well educated professional family. Which some people might find very shocking there are other clues. His height and build, even the boots he wears and the way he holds the knife indicates can he may be lefthanded. British investigators are now analyzing the video and comparing it to the database of video and audio recordings of known jihadists. Theyre also reaching out to Britains Muslim community hoping someone somewhere recognizes his voice. There are an estimated 400 to 500 british nationals that have volunteered to fight in syria and iraq. One of them may be the man who killed james foley and the British Government says it is determined to find him. Atika schubert, cnn, london. The brother of james foley says the u. S. Government could have done more to try and free him. Michael foley says the u. S. Policy against paying ran some for hostages is too rigid. He spoke with cnns anderson cooper. What kind of guy was he . Anderson, i dont want jim to have died in vain and from the amount of support ive seen, i dont believe that will be the case but i want people to remember jim and his legacy, how he, you know, his fight for the less than privileged people, for the poor. For his love of journalism and the desire to bring light to bring the story out from places in the world that wouldnt otherwise be heard. And jims really my hero and i think hes a hero for many people and i really just hope that that legacy carries on. Is that really what compelled him . I mean he came late to the world of journalism. He did. He was 40 years old when he died. But to go to the places repeatedly that he went to, i mean, you know, there are other forms of journalism one can do, but he really chose the most difficult path and the most dangerous path imaginable. Was it for you in his description of it, it was always about trying to give a voice to those who didnt have a voice . It was. I didnt appreciate it, especially after you know, we worked for 40 days to get him out of libya. I didnt appreciate it till he went back to libya that second time and i started to understand it and someone you know, ive been asked this question a million times why hes gone back. Someone shared with me the analogy which is why does a fireman go back into that burning fire . Because they believed in their core that this is what theyre meant to do, and jim came to it late in life but it really merged his talents and his desires and i really think he brought a lot of skill to the profession in the short amount of time he was doing it. It also i think is important to point out again, you know, he wasnt sort of this young fool hardy guy going off to wars. I mean he had been out there a long time. He had been experienced, as you said, he had been taken captive in libya. He knew how to operate on the ground. Did you did you talk to him about the dangers . Did he discuss those with you and about his thoughts on it . Yeah, yeah, i mean we knew he had a lot of experience, youre right. He was embedded with some forces in afghanistan and iraq and then of course, libya multiple times. Syria more than once. But you know, anyone thats following whats going on in syria knows theres no blueprint for safety. I was reading after he got out of libya the first time, global post, he had a job stateside for a while, but he he did. But it didnt fit. I mean he just. It didnt fit. He insisted on going over. Jim actually lived with us in massachusetts and it was a time we cherish. My two boys really, really looked up to uncle jim. The fun uncle with no rules and but no, domestic life wasnt for him. He had to he had to get back. James foley executed by isis. That again was his brother michael. Well, a frightening epidemic continues to grip west africa. Introducing the xfinity my account app. The ebola epidemic in west africa continues to spread with nigeria reporting a further two cases of the deadly virus. This comes as senegal a nation so far unaffected by the outbreak closes its board offers with gin knee. The World Health Organization believes many cases have gone reported with families reportedly in denial over the impacts. More than 1400 people have died since the outbreak began in march. The epidemic is leaving many people skartd of a virus they dont yet fully understand. Heres cnns elizabeth cohen. When kent brantly and Nancy Writebol were released from the hospital, there was great happiness and joy but there were some people who expressed maybe quietly but did express they were concerned these two people who had ebola will be out in the general public. Was it safe for other people. The answer from the doctors at emory who treated them is yes. There is no threat to people in the general public. There is nothing to worry about. The reason for that is they no longer have the virus in their blood and they know that because they tested these people over the course of two days, did more than one blood test and they know it is no longer there. Of course, many people are wondering the secret serum, this new experimental medicine these two people received is that what saved them. The doctors said there is no way of answering that question. Maybe it was, but maybe it wasnt. Lets take a look at some of the facts. In this particular outbreak, nearly half the people lived and these people didnt get that the new medicine. Nearly half the people lived even without the medicine. In some ways, they had pretty good odds working for them. Heres another thing to think about. Writebol and brandt lit had terrific supportive care. For example, they were kept really well hydrated. Thats crucial. That can really help someone survive an enfection. So they werent given necessarily the same kind of care ta other people with ebola have received but i will say this, as well. Six people have been given this new medicine and five of them are still alive. Now another interesting question is whether writebol and brantley are immune to ebola because theyve already had it. The doctors at emory say the evidence suggests they are indeed immune to ebola but only this one strain and there are five strains. If they chose to go back to africa and, they would be somewhat better protected than other Health Care Worker whos didnt have ebola. Elizabeth cohen there for us. Now we turn to ferguson, missouri. Violence has taken a toll on everyone in the town but particularly on its youngest member. Well get the view of fergusons children coming next. In a moment our special coverage here on cnn continues with my colleague isa soares. We want to show you what toll the tense situation if ferguson, missouri, is taking on the children. Heres cnns poppy harlow. Reporter im 8 years old. My name an irene kidd and nim 9 years old. These are fergusons children. When it first started i did hear a couple of gunshots and a lot of helicopters. I just cant deal with it. They need to stop doing it. Im mostly mad about this. Its plain wrong to let this happen. Children caught in chaos. 8yearold woods wants to go back to school. Whats happening in ferguson scares him, especially at night. Cops are going to come into our house and try to get us. The looters are at nighttime, i try to just comfort him and not let him watch the news because thats when he seems to be more afraid. Their mothers have been protesting. Irene join them during the day. Im standing up for what i think is right. Weve tried to explain to irene that cops are people, too. Theyre good people and there are bad people. He wants to know why we cant go back to school and why everybody breaking into the stores and why is the street always blocked off at nighttime but they dont have all the answers. He already knows that you know, a cop shot a kid but he wants to know why and i cant really explain to him why because i dont know the why either. I just dont understand why Police Officers feel like they have to use their gun. They have tasers. They have batons. They even have mace. Disperse immediately. You can keep your children away from the violence and riots but images like this are hard to protect them from come daylight. My 9yearold son was watching the news with me one night and we saw the tear gas. We saw the Police Officers, and he said to me, i bet that the kids in ferguson never want to go outside anymore. St. Louis post dispatch columnist iaha sultan has been focusing on the children of ferguson throughout her coverage. Some 4700 are 14 or younger. The individuals who are really the most powerless and voiceless are the children there. I think the adults have an even greater responsibility to hear what the kids in this community are saying and what theyre feeling. Child psychiatrist dara glick says listening to children means everything. You always say how do we talk to children about whats happened. The actual task is to listen to children. You cant make the blanket statements of everyone is safe. That isnt their reality. There are people that they are worried about that they saw maybe as invincible before and now theyre not sure. David leonard knows what its like to live through riots as a child. My name is David Leonard and i was 14 years old during the la riots. He documented them in this film. So my dad heard the verdict and he decided to pick me up from school. He knew that he was taking me to be a part of history. Hes a journalist now. He says because of what he saw. It wasnt just living through the riots. It was living through seeing rodney king beaten by the lapd over and over. I felt like there was an injustice. I also felt like it was wrong to burn and loot places. I also felt like the system had failed. It really affected me in the notion that the world can erupt at any point. As leonard and the world watch ferguson, the children here are just beginning to sort through what this all means to them. I learned a lesson i shouldnt come outside where he got shot at. Im not walking down the street in canfield where the polices are. Ive learned that violence should definitely always be the last resort. I want the world to know that ferguson actually isnt a bad place. Ferguson is a really nice place. Theres no doubt though these children have been left a little less innocent.
