Thank you again for joining us. As the coronavirus pandemic rages around the world like a wildfire, the u. S. State of georgia, right here, is bucking the stay at home mandate by reopening businesses that invite close contact. The exact opposite of social distancing. This is a state that already has more than 22,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus and more than 800 deaths. Almost all of them since mid march and those numbers keep growing daily. Yet in the coming hours, barber shops, massage parlors, gyms, bowling alleys will have the option of reopening to customers. Restaurants and movie theaters will be allowed to reopen on monday. Health experts say this move is premature. Even President Trump says he disapproves. I want the states to open more than he does, much more than he does, but i didnt like to see spas at this early stage nor did the doctors, is that a correct statement, deborah . I didnt like to see spas opening frankly. I didnt like to see a lot of things happening and i wasnt happy with it and i wasnt happy with brian kemp. I wasnt at all happy because and i could have done something about it but i wasnt happy with brian kemp. Spas, beauty parlors, tattoo parlors. By the way, i want them to open numbers excuse me. Excuse me. I want them to open and i want them to open as soon as possible and i want the state to open. While many u. S. States are eager to get people back to work, at least two governors in new jersey and West Virginia say they are not ready to follow georgias lead. We try to call every shot we can here based on science, fact, data. I want to open up as much as the next guy, by the way. Were note there yet. Were just not there yet. Doesnt mean were not preparing, war gaming, trying to get the right level of advice but the house is still on fire. We lost overnight 307 people in new jersey. Our death toll is 5368. A lot of the other metrics have begun to stabilize which is good. Theyre stabilizing, not going down yet. I hope that doesnt happen as a national matter. It certainly means i think any state needs that robust testing and Contact Tracing infrastructure in place before you reopen. So you can quickly snuff out hot spots but were not there yet. I care about one thing, keep our people safe, protected and get us back to work. I am trying to do that as fast as i possibly can. On a global scale Johns Hopkins university has now tracked 2. 7 Million People with coronavirus. About 1 3 are in the u. S. Where the death toll now approaching 50,000. And new testing data suggests the actual number of u. S. Cases might be far higher. We get more on that from cnns nick watt. The number of people infected by this rampant virus in new york state, the global hot spot, might actually be a stunning ten times higher than we thought. Its also that this is much more widespread. Phase one of an Antibody Testing program suggests that as many as 2. 7 million new yorkers might have already been infected, but the states current confirmed case count is just under 270,000. 13. 9 tested positive for having the antibodies. They have the virus. They develop the anti bodies and they are now, quote unquote recovered. Reporter new yorks death toll of around 19 1 2,000 is also certainly too low. That number is going to go up. Those deaths are only hospitalization or nursing home deaths. That does not have what are called athome deaths. Reporter now a higher infection rate could mean this virus is less deadly than we thought, kills fewer of those who get it and we are developing some immunity and those individuals may be part of how we move forward as we start to think about reopening. Reporter new york is not opening up yet, not yet. We need to see how this is playing out in each community and test thoroughly and protect citizens before thinking about opening up. We absolutely need to significantly ramp up i am not overly confident right now at all. Reporter wherever, whenever when we open up cases will likely rise. Zero possibility that you will spread the virus. What we want to do is make sure that you reduce the possibility. Reporter miamidade, a case count is not consistently coming down with the white house reopening guidelines. Theyre planning to open marinas, golf courses. You can play singles tennises and jog in a certain direction. Meat packing facilities are closing down. Tyson just closed another plant. They usually produce enough beef to feed 4 Million People. Not anymore. Nick watt, cnn, los angeles. And with mixed signals coming out of the white house about whether states should reopen or not, we also saw the u. S. President openly supporting a drug that had not been proven. Now hes talking about using sunlight and disinfectant treatments. For more about it, heres our report. Reporter its a showdown that plays out again and again. The president versus science. Thank you very much. Armed with facts, figures, some of the smartest minds in the country, President Trump chooses to go with his gut. This is just my hunch. Reporter or what he hopes will happen. Its also possible it doesnt come back at all. Reporter the latest episode wednesday saying the coronavirus may not come back later this year. It was in response and a droeir contradiction from the head of the cdc robert red field saying it could come back in the winter and be more difficult when coupled with the flu. When dr. Fauci took the microphone, he backed him up. There will be coronavirus in the fall. Dr. Deborah birx unwilling to agree with the president. Theres a good chance covid will not come back. We dont know. Trump has said he wants to give people hope. That theres light at the end of the tunnel. False hope can be damaging. Even deadly. President trump has promoted the drug hydroxychloroquine with no proof that its effective against covid19. If you are a doctor, nurse, first responder, medical person going into hospitals, they say taking it before the fact is good but what do you have to lose . They say take it. Reporter several new studies say it may harm critically ill patients. What do i know . Im not a doctor but i have common sense. Reporter this was part of the firestorm that responded in a top hhs scientist. He was side lined after funding potentially dangerous drugs. He wanted to put it into safe and scientifically vetted solutions and not into drugs, vaccines and other technologies that lack scientific merit. The president said he never heard of dr. Bright. I guy says he was pushed out of a job, maybe he was, maybe he wasnt. Reporter another doctor hes heard of is dr. Nancy pesonia. She infuriated the president after warning in late february that severe illnesses in the u. S. Related to the coronavirus were not a question of if but when. The president got the news as he boarded air force one in india to head home. He then canceled a meeting with Top Health Experts about mitigating the virus after he heard what she had said and the stock market crashed. Trumps skepticism for science extends well beyond the covid crisis. Its been a threat throughout his term. From pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord to ripping up environmental regulations, even disputing the paths of hurricanes. That was the original chart. Reporter last september showing a map of the path of Hurricane Dorian that the president changed with a sharpie to include alabama even though meteorologists said there would be no impact on the state. The president , of course, is not a fan of anyone whose messages run counter to his so after dr. Nancy masonia spoke out in february, she wasnt fired but she was no longer allowed to speak on behalf of the cdc about coronavirus. We should note the cdc hasnt held one of their own press briefings since last month. Instead, they participate in the Coronavirus Task force briefings which is led daily by President Trump. We turn now to the u. K. Where british doctors say they are having a tough time still getting the personal protective equipment they need to take care of patients. They found 38 report they dont have proper eye protection. The same percent say they dont have top quality facemasks when they most need them. Six of ten say the masks have not been tested to ensure they fit properly and 75 say they dont have long sleeve gowns. Lets talk about this with our nick roberts son joining me live from london. Its hard to believe that weeks into this theyre still struggling with ppe that they need. Reporter struggling to get it to the vital people. Aerosol generating proceed gurs, agp, this is whats used when somebody is put on a ventilator. Half of the doctors polled in this survey which ran from the beginning of april until a couple of days ago run by a Doctors Association here in the u. K. Involving more than 1,000 doctors responding, close to half said that are involved in those aerosol generating procedures dont have the proper gowns either. These figures are shocking. They run counter to the message the government is trying to communicate. They were in Public Relations difficulty because they talked about getting muchneeded ppe supplies in from turkey. They said that would happen by the weekend. It didnt, it happened several days later. Even to this day, only half of the purported shipment has arrived in the u. K. Its partly a messaging issue for the government that its messing up its messaging on this. Its critically a supply issue that the front line medics still dont have what they need and the problems run beyond there as well to at that point into places like that. They provide a million cases of personal Protection Equipment that prior to the coronavirus pandemic we only have to supply to a relatively small number of locations now. Its still a narrative theyre struggling with. The narratives are the sort of new procedures, tested, tracked and traced and seeing where they have the virus and ending a lockdown. Thats the point of biggest pressure for the government. The minister talking quite openly about what a new situation, new post lockdown situation could look like. The Prime Minister still not fully back at downing street, still in his country retreat and not quite clear when hes going to be at his desk and a lot of people speculating that without him driving the government message, disagreements are going to continue. He has been out for some time. Nic robertson, the latest from london. New unemployment numbers paint a grim picture. People are lining up at food banks, many for the first time in their lives. That story is coming up here. Also, every red dot you see here is a massive oil tanker that is completely empty. Now theyre bouncing back from historic lows just a little bit. The wti as you see there is hovering at 16 or 17 a barrel. John deftarios is breaking this down for us. It has been quite a roller coaster ride with oil prices. Weve seen the most volatile week in the history of the oil market. Whats going on . Reporter well, its going to be harder as we finish out the week unless theres an extraordinary shock. Natalie, we saw swings of 50 a barrel down and up. We were negative 37 on monday. Around 17 for wti aint bad considering where we started. We were at a better than 20year low for brandt. Now having said that, were going to be down eight of the last nine weeks as a result of this drop in demand which is the sharpest drop since world war ii. We saw the u. S. iranian tensions here in the strait of hormuz which is a choke point handling 20 of the tank jerel traffic. Were getting desperate for storage. We see cushing, oklahoma, storage will fill up by the end of june. How much is demand down . 30 right now. That could happen throughout 2020 and a slow recovery Going Forward. John deftarios reporting for us. Thank you. Well see you soon. The american jobs market has not been as bad as it is right now since the days of the great depression. More than 4 million americans filed for Unemployment Benefits in the last week alone. You can see the rate lock slowing down. Theyve seen more than 26 Million People losing their jobs in a little over a month. This is how that graph looks on the ground. People unable to feed their families lining up for food handouts. This is outside of miami, florida. More than 1,000 families, some sleeping in their cars to keep a place in line. Scenes like this are playing out across the country. Lets bring in cnns chief Business Correspondent christine romans. Shes in new york. Those lines show how people are hurting and the question is when, if these jobs will even come back this year. Reporter those lines in florida, really remarkable. What we can tell you is the Labor Department data show that in florida, thats the hardest place to get certified and to get the jobless checks from the government. The idea in the u. S. , the u. S. System is when you lose a job you apply for state Unemployment Benefits. Theres extra money to keep people as close to whole as possible for four months. People are having a hard time filing for and getting those benefits started. So hopefully soon people will have money in their pockets. Thats different than some of the other models in the u. K. And canada where the government are directly paying payrolls of company to keep people whole and keep the stress out of it. Imagine how stressful it is for the millions and millions of people to be worried about their money while theyre worried about their health. This is an economic crisis on top of a Health Crisis. Were doing this on purpose. Thats whats so odd. Theres no playbook for this. Were basically putting the labor market to sleep on purpose so that we can try to come out the other end for the Health Crisis but it is a real stress, a big stress for so many companies. Theres stress for money and stress about getting the coronavirus. What about the help from the federal government. We saw reports this week. Big money going places that people didnt want to see it go. What about small businesss . Yeah, theres some real frustration among small businesses. The house has passed another 484 billion of stimulus. 310 billion is specifically for small businesses. The Treasury Department has asked big Public Companies who have access to other funds to please dont take taxpayer money. The statute has been written so they can apply but the Treasury Department is using a thing, the public shaming to say do not do this if you have other means of money. This money should really be going to main street, not to big Public Companies. There is 60 billion set aside specifically to get to the Smaller Community development lenders. That is important because those are the people with ties to maybe companies that are unbanked, that dont have real robust ties to the banking system. You want to be able to get money to those companies because they really did miss out last time. Absolutely. Theres no wiggle room when they miss out. No. Christine romans, we appreciate it. Confirmed cases of the coronavirus have now passed 2. 7 million globally according to Johns Hopkins. And in the United States its fast approaching 870,000 with deaths closing in on 50,000. That is not stopping the state of georgia, right here, Going Forward with one of the nations most aggressive plans to reopen the economy. Starting today businesses such as hair salons, gyms, and tattoo parlors are allowed to open, but adequate testing remains a key issue. The president and the nations top Infectious Disease experts arent quite seeing eye to eye on that. We absolutely need to significantly ramp up not only the number of tests but the capacity to actually perform them. I am not overly confident right now he said that, i dont agree with. Anderson cooper has more on where things stand. Reporter there are now more than 860,000 positive cases of coronavirus in the u. S. Nearly 49,000 people have died and though the number of cases across the country is currently declining, there are fears a second wave could be even worse than what weve seen so far. We will have coronavirus in the fall. I am convinced of that. What happens with that will depend on how were able to contain it when it occurs. Reporter weve also learned the virus was in the United States earlier than previously confirmed. Autopsies in Santa Clara County show two people died of the virus in february, first on february 6th, more than three weeks of the first reported victim in washington state. That means there was Community Spread in california early as mid january if not earlier than that. Reporter its been almost six weeks since the president declared a state of emergency in the u. S. Seems like these are no longer surprising in most parts of the country and some states are taking first steps on reopening. Georgia is one of them. Governor brian kemp is allowing some nonessential businesses to reopen even though Public Health officials warn it may be too soon. I would tell him that he should be careful and i would advise him not to just turn the switch on and go because there is a danger of a rebound. As america tentatively makes moves towards the opening, the original epicenter of the outbreak, wuhan in china, is working on getting back to normal. As that happens, a cnn crew which had just made it out of the city before the long, tough lockdown is now back and along with the rest of wuhan, theyre reflecting on what happened. Heres our david culver. Reporter as the folks that live here within wuhan look to move forward after this lockdown has eased and try to resume life as it was prior to the lockdown knowing its going to look a lot different, theyre also cognizant of what they have just experienced. For many that was a painful several months. Some of them losing loved wunsz, others losing their jobs and not sure if theyll have a financial cushion to return to. It seems now they wont have that, many of them at least. However, theyre reflecting on those who early on tried to sound the alarm here. An ophthalmologist wanted to alert his friends that there was a sarslike illness. Sent a message. Police reprimanded him, silenced him. He wasnt the only one. Eventually he went back to the hospital, contracted the virus, got sick and died. Less than a week before he died he shared his story with cnn. Now being back here we wanted to follow up with his family. We wanted to hear their side of things to see if theyd be willing to talk. Heres our attempt at contacting his widow. Weve gone up to the Apartment Building of the doctor. He is really seen as a hero here in china. His widow lives in the building that im looking at just down the street here. Were going to give a call to see if she would be willing to share a little bit with us about this whole experience and how shes been able to process it. That was dr. Lees widow who acknowledged her identity on the phone. Were just in front of where she lives. Part of the concern has been since this story has been polite sized by coming here and outside of china, the concern is that theres more pressure on his family to keep quiet and not share beyond what he himself has already shared. Out of respect we did not air the voice of dr. Lees widow. What you heard was the voice of our translator. Dr. Lees widow told us she simply is too busy to talk, she had other things to do and didnt go into much detail beyond that. There is a lot of fear around speaking out especially to foreign media. Theres a question what we could be bringing home virus wise into this area. They have focused on the external threat and what could be caused by imported cases. David culver, cnn, wuhan, china. Significant improvements in air quality around the world. Can you tell from these pictures . Researchers from i. Q. Eair, the study ten major cities around the world. Seven of those cities saw their air pollution drop by as much as 60 in just three weeks. Were joined from los angeles. Jess, thanks for coming on. How are you . Oh, im doing well. Thanks for having. How are you . Im fine. So far so good. I want to ask you, coronavirus has taken a heavy toll on people around the world, but we have seen a lot of changes come about since the pandemic shut down much of the globe. Reports of animals returning to places from which theyve been long gone. Record low levels of pollution. It shows just how devastating an impact humans are having on the planet. Yeah, that is correct. These are all really hopeful little seeds. That we planted them and suddenly theyre getting a chance to germinate in our absence. Now its up to us to figure out how we take that and grow it into a sustainable future. Right. What are you hearing from people . Weve seen it on social media, covered it here in the news. The air is being clear and pollution going away during the pandemic. Peoples reaction, shock, like we didnt realize what we were living in. Thats correct. I live in los angeles which used to be notorious for the smog in the 1980s and even the 70s, and a lot of clean air efforts went into improving that situation. Ill tell you, these last few weeks, my husband who has asthma, has noticed the difference just in being outdoors when we take our exercise walks. And i think its something that while you can hear it and understand it on an intellectual level, seeing the difference like that. They say Carbon Emissions have dropped 6 . Thats still not enough to get the world back on track to meet the good old Paris Agreement targets from 2015. The question is without the Trump Administration making environmental gains, theyve been pulling back on ways to protect our environment, how do we fix this . What this shows us is this dramatic reduction in output, it is dramatic, because we have cut so much emissions over the last month or so involuntarily though that may have been, that shows us that we actually would be most of the way towards meeting the 2030 goal of reducing Carbon Emissions by 40 . We would be more than halfway there if we did this ir intentionally. So to me, that really shows that we have a tremendous opportunity to make sustainable changes in the way that we work and live and play and interact with our environment. Nasa says air pollution has dropped to a 20year low. That can impact the quality and length of life. We cant aechb even see them. The question is, we know so many people are on board with wanting change but the government hasnt taken a step back and put the planet before business. Right. That is a very hard thing to convey to people who particularly within the United States are put into power by wealthy people. Thats whats driving the elected officials mindsets. If you have people beholden to fossil fuel interests running government, its hard for them to stand up and make a big push to change things and prioritize the planet and people over profits. So i really hope that this time is a time of inspiration for the next crop of leaders so that they can come to the forefront and bring new ways of thinking about what they owe our society. They with bring money and enjoy clean air. Thats what we need on the planet and you cant get around that. This pandemic brought about this accident, and its a lovely accident that we are seeing with these beautiful, clear skies. Thank you so much for talking with us. Good luck to you. Thank you.
