There are drastic options democrats have at their disposal, telling the sergeant at arms to jail officials or fine officials that are found to be in contempt. I think democrats are wrestling with just how aggressively to go after barr and other trump officials. You know, there is this risk of investigative fatigue, looking like partisan overreach. I think that is something they are struggling with, especially if they decide to go after trump further down the line, it might be more difficult to do that if they have gone after barr with Something Like impeachment proceedings or holding him in censure on the house floor. The ultimate judgment comes at the ballot box of 2020, but you could argue a contempt of congress, Trump Supporters or trumps allies could wear that like a badge of honor almost. Right. Exactly. And the president has taken this war like posture. We have seen him blanket stone wall the democrats and its sort of blowing up their plan. They had planned to use all of these documents and these hearings with bob mueller or don mcgahn as sort of a road map to their future investigative plans and to lay the ground work for potential sfeechimpeachment ple and now it looks like the lot of issues wont be resolved for months or years in the courts. It could drag into 2020. Some issues like the tax returns may not get resolved after the election. Theres a question if whether democrats will have to reassess their strategy here. Theres a question of bob mueller testifying, will he or wont he on may 15th. If not, what are republicans and what is the president trying to hide . Well, yesterday perhaps we found out. From 450 plus former federal prosecutors who wrote about what the president would be guilty of if he were a citizen. They write, we emphasize these are not matters of close professional judgment but to look at these facts and to say a that a prosecutor could not obtain a conviction for obstruction of justiruns counte logic and our experience. Essentially the president would be guilty of obstruction if he was a citizen. Is they why the president and most republicans dont want bob mueller to testify on may 15th. This is the central question democrats want to ask if and when there is a hearing with bob mueller. Mueller did not weigh in on obstruction because he said it wouldnt be fair to bring these charges against someone who cant be indicted and cant defend themselves in the court. Democrats want to know what would you have done if trump was a private citizen and the president might not like what bob mueller has to say there. This is letter is a stark and extraordinary statement coming from a wide range of former doj prosecutors spanning from multiple democratic and republican administrations, and it would rebuff what the attorney general said. He concluded on his own there wasnt enough for obstruction. That could be a black mark for the attorney general as well. Mueller still on the doj payroll.
