The meeting was supposed to be at syria and turkey. He called james mattis, the worlds most overrated general. He claimed fewer than 100 isis prisoners, the last dangerous ones escaped in northern syria. He called pelosi a name and the democrats were done. I understand the president was a meltdown, sad to say. He called her a thirdrate politician. This was not a dialogue. One of the most extraordinary things youll ever see with a president ial seal. President trump penning a letter to turkeys president. The white house confirms it was written last week by the president , the same day turkey began its military offensive against the kurds in northern syria. The president warns erdogan, quote, you dont want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people. And i dont want to be responsible for destroying the turkish economy. And i will. He adds, history will look at you favorably if you get this done the humane way. Well look upon you forever as the deflt if good things dont happen. Dont be a tough guy. Dont be a fool. Remember, it was President Trump who said he would not stand in erdogans way. Secretary of state pompeo asked about the strategy and provided some insight into the white house decisionmaking. My experience with the president is that, he makes decisions and then absorbs data and facts. Evaluates situations, if we need to adjust our policy to achieve our goals. President trump now looking to distance himself in the wake to decision to withdraw to abandon the kurds in northern syria. They have a problem with turkey. They have a problem with the border. Its not a police force. Two countries fight over land. It has nothing to do with us. Kurds are much safer right now. But the kurds know how to fight. As i said, theyre not angels. Theyre not angels. Pompeo and Vice President pence land in turkey this morning, leading a delegation trying to get erdogan to halt the offensive. Yesterday, the house, including 100 republicans, voted overwhelmingly to condemn the president s troop pullout from syria. Jomana karadsheh joins us this morning. Good morning to you. Huh how much is watching erdogan at this point . Reporter they are calling for an immediate ceasefire. This is something that turkey says this is a nonstarter. We heard them saying they will continuing with this mission. They are determined to continue with the operation. They say they will not stop until the kurdish fighters move away from the border. That safe zone, that buffer zone, that turkey is aiming to establish. About 30, 35 kilometers into syria. He says once they do that, then the Turkish Operation will stop. So, youre looking at a very Difficult Mission here for the Vice President. A very awkward time for him to be coming. You have got on the one hand, the president pretty much undermined this delegations mission today. Yesterday, the statements you just ran a short time ago, where he says he doesnt care about happens next. And you have the United States not with much leverage other than sanctions at this point and the threat of more severe sanctions, which turkey said they dont really care about. Theyre determined to go ahead with this mission. At the same time, theyre talking to the russians. Russia is the one calling the shots on the battlefield right now. You see how things have shifted over the past few days when the kurds return to the syrian regime. The turkishbacked forces were advancing. And thats given the russians the leverage here. They have a working relationship with turkey. And we know that president erdogan is going to be meeting next week in a few days, with the russian president vladimir putin. So, were going to have to wait and see what comes out of these talks today. Some experts that we have spoken to, dave, they say this is nothing but theatrics. They say this is a show. This is pretty much the u. S. President , trying to back pedal after giving turkey the green light, which the white house denies, to go ahead with this operation. Whether it is sending the delegation or the letter that was leaked yesterday, we have not had an official reaction to that stunning letter and no confirmation if president erdogan did receive that, dave. Jomana karadsheh live for us this morning. Vice President Joe Biden not alone at the top of the polls and going after elizabeth warren. He is seizing on her refusal to answer if middle class taxes would go up to paid for medicare for all. Fascinating. That the person who has a plan for everything, has no plan for the singlemost consequential issue in this election. All that she has moved, and has been taken more seriously, people are going to ask her about a little candor here. You know . Tell us how youre going to do what you say youre going to do. Today, biden and warren attend a separate Democratic National chommittee event. Welcome news for nearly 50,000 United Auto Workers members. They have reached a tentative deal to end the 31day strike. Temporary workers will be able to come fulltime employees after three years. And gm has offered to invest 8. 3 billion in gm plants to create or protect 5,400 jobs. Union members in detroit appeared optimistic. Im hoping to see something there that we retain a new product and this plant is going to stay open for our membership and their families. Something to look back at. Knowing that this is what it took to get to what we wanted and what we, you know, asked for. I feel like its worth it. A source familiar with the deal said the plant that closed earlier this year, will not get a new product line. The plant in detroit will get a new electric truck for production. Workers, by the way, stay on strike until the Unions NationalCouncil Votes on the deal later today. Back to our breaking news now. Maryland congress mechanic Elijah Cummings has died. He passed away overnight due to complications from a longstanding health issue. April ryan joins us on the phone. Shes our correspondent for american urb american urban networks. A lifetime Public Servant in particular, in that baltimore area. Good morning. Good morning. I just i literally open my eyes and turn the tv on. And i saw it. And i just schemed. Screamed. Congressman cummings is a fighter. We knew him as a fighter. On capitol hill. But i knew him as a friend, as well. Congressman cummings was a lawyer. He was in the statehouse. And he moved on to capitol hill. He filled the position. He was elected to the post. That was left by fume. Elijah cummings was a man of fai faith. He always saw the spiritualness in it. He would say, april, from wednesdwhere we come, look who we are in washington. I would think of so many conversations i would have with him. There were times he was in the hospital and i didnt know. He would reach out and text me. He would say, im in the hospital. And i would pray for him. We keep it moving. I would send him notes of encouragement. Hes been dealing with an illness for a while. He had a heart issue. And theres been multiple complications from that. I was looking for him the week of the National Black kcaucus i september. He took ill again around that time. And we havent really seen him since then. It was interesting and i ran into something that was chose to him last week. I inquired about him. They said they just talked to him last week on the phone. And his voice sounded like it was himself again. You know . Because he said for the last two weeks, he hadnt been sounding like himself. But his voice was strong, sounding like himself. Thats why, this morning, i am in shock because i was hearing the words that he was on the mend. They said he wasnt there yet, but he was on the mend. This morning, yeah, i wake up to the fact in the baltimore community, you know, he is in the community. And he as you know, he had been on a walker and a wheelchair. But he was going to things. And you know, we knew something wasnt quite right, when we were hearing that they were taking a lot of his engagements. They were declining a lot of engagements that he was supposed to go to. We were quietly concerned. But we would always keep track of him. April, im so sorry for your loss. This means so much to you and he means so much to baltimore and to the country. Hes been a loyal something thats interesting about him. He always, to me, covering him, seemed to be someone who was unruffled. Right. And no matter how kind of ugly it got between you know, with partisanship, i remember him reaching across the ill and defending mark meadows last year. Thats right. He did that with such grace. You know, and even when sometimes he was attacked by the other side, i was really i think thats kind of an impressive character trait. That was his heart. His heart was about the people and the good for the people. You know, when this president , donald trump, even, became president , when they had the day of inauguration, he and donald trump talked at that luncheon on capitol hill. They said, lets have a meeting on the price of prescription drugs. He said because the cost is killing his people. He said he wanted to find a way to fix this. And then, you know, just a couple of weeks ago, in the oval office, President Trumps heart had softened saying he saw a side of Elijah Cummings he wanted to go back to meet again. Elijah cummings was willing to go across the aisle and deal with people. Hes from the time when people came together and peoples hearts came together, even though they didnt see eyetoeye. He wanted to work for the people. But today, my heart is we have lost a fighter. Weve lost and this is not about party. This is about person and humanity. This is a man whose mother his late mother would take him and his brothers and sisters to the pools in baltimore, swimming pools in baltimore, that were not ind grate tegrated, that we segregated pools, to help him understand, that you, too, belong. You, too, meant something. He would tell me that ugly things of the past would haunt him. He realized who he was and it was a fight for the people. Thats why he was friends with mark med dosadows. Thats why he talked to President Trump about prescription drugs. He was a fighter. And you dont have anyone of that caliber like Elijah Cummings. Its a loss for baltimore. Its a loss for the nation. Its a loss for the world. Im just in shock. Im sitting here watching the pictures that you have on the air, of Elijah Cummings. Im in shock. My heart goes out to maya, his wife, and his family. Its just i am in shock. I had heard, again, last week, that he was on the mend. But this morning, you know, we have to pull together and do the bio on this great democratic congressman, the head of government oversight reform, Elijah Cummings. A lifetime of public service, a political legend in baltimore. A father of three. April ryan, were sorry you lost your friend and this country lost a political legend. We appreciate your time on this sad, breaking news this morning. Thank you so much. Thank you for letting me talk about the Elijah Cummings that i knew. Well be on throughout the morning here on cnn. That suggested a link. If ukraine investigates joe biden and his son, the white house will set up a meeting between ukraine and the president. He didnt think there was a quid pro quo for the president to release security aid to ukraine. The Washington Post suggests that the gist of that text was guinn to sondland by the president himself. Sondland is expected to testify that he has no knowledge if the president was telling the truth. Now, for the first time, the Senate Majority leader behind closed doors, prepare for impeachment. His Office Released a press release that he passed away at 2 45 at Johns Hopkins hospital, concerning longstanding health challenges. This is a longstanding, longserving Public Servant. Cummings the chairman of committee on oversight and reform. Rachael bade joins us this morning, a reporter from the Washington Post. Sad news to start with from today. He is a central figure in the impeachment proceedings. Hes a longstanding member of congress. A lifelong Public Servant. Your thoughts this morning, rachael . This is a huge loss for nancy pelosi and her democratic colleagues. Ive been covering the house, now, for Something Like eight years. Ive covered cummings for a while. I can tell you, he was a really kind congressman, always taking questions from reporters. But more than that, for democrats, he was really a fighter for them. He was always trying to sort of root out abusive taxpayer dollars and the executive branch, counter republic attacks on the obama administration. And i can tell you, he can really move a crowd. One thing that really sticks up sticks into my mind, was during the irs controversy, when the republicans were accusing the irs in 2013 of targeting tea party groups. I remember, irs employees, the morale was just totally low because they were getting pummeled from the left and the right. I remember listening to him talk to local irs workers in his district and say to them, i see you. I know youre doing your best and do not let this get you down. And it moved some of the audience to tears. He is someone that democrats are going to miss. And also, his constituents who he was very close with. Yeah. He had been everyone serving th long as we can remember. 23 years representing marylands seventh district, which encompasses baltimore. His fight for lowering prescription drugs embodied his time in congress. Right now, its the role that christine mentioned, as chairman of House Oversight. How central is that to who he was . And heres something he said recently, im begging the American People to Pay Attention to whats going on because if you want to have a democracy intact for your children and your childrens children, you have to guard this moment. This is our watch. How much did he want did he need this fight right now over oversight of this administration . Yeah. I mean, cummings has talked a lot this year about us being at this crossroads in american history, where people need to Pay Attention with whats going on in the trump administration. Thats what his job was at the oversight committee, to shine a spotlight on whats going on in the white house. You know, he actually had some success early on when trump was stonewalling all of the congressional investigations for ten months and a lot of investigators were struggling to sort of break news, cummings and his longtime staffers, who has been working with him on the oversight committee, they were able to turn up a bunch of things. Problem with a security clearance issue where trump went around officials in the white house that said Jared Kushner shouldnt have a security clearance, for example, and made him get one. You know, there was a whistleblower that came to cummings and said, theres a problem here. He had success in terms of shining a spotlight on some things that people said need fixing. So, this is going to be, of course, a huge loss for democrats. You know, but again, beyond oversight, you mentioned prescription drugs. I once heard a staffer say that cummings was just as interested in, say, making sure that the kids that were separated at the border during the family separation policy were finding their parents, as he was about Holding Trump accountable. He didnt lose track of the policy problems and policy challenges, even while he was, you know, investigating the president. The president famously called his district a rodentinfested district. And he handled that with a lot of grace. He handled with a lot of grace, he defended his friends. I remember him defending mark meadows, a republican congressman, someone who accused him of racist behavior and Elijah Cummings defended him. Thats right. Youre going to see republicans seek out favorably about mr. Cummings, as well. When trump attacked him, it was clearly was he was getting under the president s skin, in terms of shining a light on, you know, alleged abuses in the white house, problems in the white house. Cummings response was come to baltimore and meet my constituents. He invited him. Very much not the punchback that trump, perhaps, was expecting. Of course, this moment, this impeachment battle, will go on in his absence. How significant might today be . Yeah. Look, hes the head of a committee that is one of three investigative committees, that is currently probing the ukraine controversy thats been sort of the center of the impeachment investigation. Now, the House Intelligence Committee has been taking the lead, from my understanding on this probe. But you know, cummings staff, who will continue to work and im sure be part of this investigation, theyre a central part of this. Longtime investigators, too. And obviously, this is a tragedy that occurs in the middle of a time when democrats were really hoping to move quickly on impeachment and have something done by the holiday season. I dont know if this will slow their work. I think elijah coummings wouldnt want it to slow the oversight work. In that vein, you will see democrats to plow ahead as they memorialize him and take note of this moment and who he was. Were going to hear or the committees will hear behind closed doors, gordon sondland, the ambassador to the e. U. If we can show one of the Text Messages with bill taylor, who was the ambassador to ukraine, as i said on the phone, i think its crazy to withhold Security Systems with the help of a political campaign. Sondland replies, i believe youre incorrect about President Trumps intentions. No quid pro quo of any kind. What are we going to learn more about this intersection and the president s role that there was no quid pro quo language and what was happen beg hind closed doors . Sondland is a central figure. We have reported and other outlets have reported that he will testify that he doesnt know if there was a quid pro quo or not. He texted back what the president told him to at that time. So, democrats i can tell you will really press him on that. He was a key figure, one of the key figures that was in charge of the policy with ukraine and was central with the pressure to give a Public Statement they were going to investigate this company that hunter biden was a member of the board. And so, you know, he, at another point, texts back that trump wanted a, quote, deliverable, specifically, a Public Statement to investigate this company, before he would meet with the president of ukraine. So, he maybe wouldnt use the language quid pro quo. Well have to see what he does. But clearly, he knows what was being promised or what was being demanded in exchange for something regarding Foreign Policy in ukraine. As for trump, the thing to watch this morning is whether or not the white house claims executive privilege over his conversations with the president. The thing about sondland, is that even though he wasnt superhigh up at the state department, he was actually directly in touch with the president , which is very rare in these sort of situations. And so, well have to see if hes able to testify about what exactly trump instructed him to do, especially regarding that text about no quid pro quo. Thats of particular interest. And theres a meeting regarding the situation between turkey and northern syria. Theres the house rebuking the president on his withdrawal there, including republicans. This meeting, that trump called nancy pelosi a thirdrate politician, who said all roads lead to putin, from pelosi to trump. What does this tell about the white house to congress and the situation in northern syria, a dire one at this moment . Once upon a time, the president admired nancy pelosi and told advisers that he did. Clearly, the relationship has very much broken down, especially over impeachment. The president has said privately he doesnt want to be impeached. Hes clearly upset about this. Impeachment didnt come up at this meeting. At least this is what pelosi is arguing, trump is feeling the pressure because some of his own remembers, republicans in the house, voted for a rebuke to the president on withdrawing troops from syria. Perhaps that soured his mood at the moment. Its funny he came back at pelosi with the same insults she made toward him. Sometimes trump echos insults. Remember the time when Hillary Clinton said youre a puppet of russia. And he responded, no, youre a puppet. He did the same thing here with pelosi. She said he was praying for his health. Im praying for his health. She says that all the time. Im praying for the president. Im praying for the president. She accused him of having a meltdown in the oval office or in the white house. And he came back down with the same language, saying she had a meltdown and suggesting shes looney in some way and needs prayers. So extraordinary 24 hours. It will not stop. Rachael bade, good to see you. Thanks. President trump also in that meeting, bragging about this letter he wrote, a nasty letter he wrote. An extraordinary letter to president erdogan. The white house confirms this was written on october 9th. Thats the same day turkey began its military offensive against the kurds in northern syria. The president warns erdogan, you dont want to be responsible for slaughtering thousands of people. And i dont want to be responsible for destroying the turkish economy. And i will.
