Coming today, and yes, throughout the weekend. Oh, my. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to early start. Im john berman. Im christine romans. Its friday the 13th, june 13th. Its 5 00 a. M. In the east. Up first, Army SergeantBowe Bergdahl back on american soil this morning. Bergdahl arriving just hours ago at Brooke Army Medical center in san antonio, texas. He spent the past week and a half in a u. S. Military hospital in germany after his release from taliban activity. This stop in texas is the final phase of bergdahls reintegration after five years as a prisoner of war. Cnns Martin Savidge live in san antonio for us. So, now we know hes back on american soil for the first time in five years. Tell us what you know. Reporter yeah, good morning, christine. Quite a remarkable moment. Bowe bergdahl landed in the middle of the night, according to the u. S. Military. He would have flown from Ramstein Air Force base in germany to Lackland Air Force base here in san antonio. Once his military aircraft touched down, then he would have been transported to the building that sort of looms in the background behind me here. Thats the san antonio military medical center, and its there that there is a section of that facility set aside for him, and he will continue his recovery process. Let me just read you a portion of the state that the army put out, and it says this our focus remains on his health and wellbeing. Secretary hagel, obviously, the secretary of defense, is confident that the army will continue to ensure that Sergeant Bergdahl receives the care and the time and the space he needs to complete his recovery and reintegration. Of course, reintegration really that awkward word, but what it means is his return home, his return back to the United States, and most important, the reunion with his family. And thats the big question people have how is it going to happen, and most especially, when is it going to happen . Typically, it would take place inside of a hospital room in the building where he is right now. The question is, when . And it should also be pointed out that the army knows after years of studying former p. O. W. S, it is this reunion with the family that is the most emotionally overwhelming part of the entire return process. Its handled very carefully. And the first time they meet is likely to be only for a few minutes. Christine . Only for a few minutes. Do we know when that meetings going to take place . Are they going to allow that to happen in private and well know after . Have we heard anything about when that meeting can happen . Reporter you can bet, christine, its going to be done absolutely in private. This is a very carefully controlled kind of reunion. The one thing you do not want is any kind of surprise. Thats what ive been told by psychologists here. So, all of this has been carefully rehearsed. We should point out that the team that is taking care of Sergeant Bowe bergdahl has been rehearsing for five years now for this return, meeting every six months, practicing for a week at a time. That included everything from transporting him from where he landed to all the way through to what it will be like when hes finally released from this facility, but there is no timeline, and that is the one thing the military stresses. Remarkable. Thats a really interesting detail. Thanks, Martin Savidge. Meantime, the Obama Administration has quietly freed five detainees from a military prison in afghanistan. Officials say a frenchman, kuwaiti and pakistani prisoners will return to their respective home countries at end of may. 38 nonafghans remain at that detention center, the only ones still in custody in afghanistan. Many have not been charged with a crime. Now to the other crucial story developing this morning. The crisis in iraq. American contractors have been evacuated from a base there as the security situation worsens. Islamic militants have captured now much of that countrys north and are threatening to take baghdad. President obama says it is clear that iraq will need more u. S. Help in this fight against the Islamic State of iraq in syria. That is the name of the militant group. And every option is being considered, except, the white house says, american boots on the ground. My team is working around the clock to identify how we can provide the most effective assistance to them. I dont rule out anything, because we do have a stake in making sure that these jihadists are not getting a permanent foothold in either iraq or syria, for that matter. This is such a delicate situation. While this is happening, there are reports that iran is coming to the aid of iraq, sending elite fighters in to help put down the sunni insurgency. Cnns arwa damon is following these developments. She is in iraq in the kurdish region. Arwa, what are the latest developments this morning . Reporter well, isis most certainly continues its occupation of iraqs second largest city of mosul, where we are right now, not too far away from the border between this autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan and central iraq. We saw refugees continuing to flow from mosul into this area, saying that they were not necessarily fleeing from isis but out of fear of Iraqi Military air strikes. Some people even going back, though, saying that even though isis fighters were roaming the streets, they felt as if the situation was stable, safe enough for them to be able to return back home. Isis continuing to try to push forward in various other strategic parts of the country as well. And throughout all of this, john, we have been seeing the Iraqi Military forces disintegrate, abandoning their positions, allowing isis to take over not just territory, but also ammunition, weapons and military vehicles. Reports that some of those vehicles are being moved to the front lines in syria as well. Underlying all of this, john, are iraq sectarian tensions. The predominantly shia government viewed as being, or trying to oppress the sunni minority. That is by and large one of the key reasons why an organization like isis has been able to gain so much territory, because even though it has been in the spotlight, there has also been a reemergence of various other significant sunni insurgent groups that were active here during the u. S. Occupation of iraq. The situation we have right now described by one iraqi politician as being utterly catastrophic. The consequences of not being able to bring security here under control will not just have ramifications for iraq but for the region as well. Isis has its roots in al qaeda in iraq and now has managed, following the u. S. Troop withdrawal of iraq, capitalizing on whats been happening in neighboring syria to not just become an entity that controls territory inside iraq but in syria as well. Trying to resolve this crisis, though, john, will not come about by use of military force alone. There has to be some sort of political reconciliation between the various sunni and shia fighters. Its not just iran also thats being brought into the mix potentially at this stage. Were also hearing various reports that shia militias inside iraq are being called to arms as well. This country very much on the brink of yet another very bloody chapter. Of course, there are reports as well of the Kurdish Militia the person merga has taken over the oil city of kirkuk. A lot going on right there, ramifications already. Arwa damon reporting live from inside iraq. Thank you very much. As for isis, the group arwa was talking about, the al qaedainspired group, continues to advance. Iraqi politics on the front burner in washington. House Speaker John Boehner really slamming the president for what he calls taking a nap on iraq, accusing the president of ignoring gains made by the terrorists. Now, republicans are calling for air strikes against the militants. The Iraqi Government calling for much of the same. Hillary clinton is now also weighing in. The former secretary of state says she is surprised by how effective isis has been. This is not just a syrian problem anymore. I never thought it was just a syrian problem. I thought it was a regional problem. I could not have predicted, however, the extent to which isis could be effective in seizing cities in iraq and trying to erase boundaries to create an Islamic State. As the secretary just noted, isis, this group, has been operating in syria for some time, now crossing over and operating quite effectively in iraq as well. She added, what is happening in iraq is a dreadly, deteriorating situation. And oil prices up big, john, this morning. Again, oil prices up big time. Well watch that very closely. San antonio built a 22point lead, and well, the miami fans headed for their cars. In game three, the spurs won by 19 points, last night by 21, backtoback, dominating road wins. The early call that was so controversial was just yeah, that dive definitely turned the game, and croatia certainly didnt have anything after that. But ive got to agree with you, too, john, brazil just doesnt look like the team that should go on to win this whole thing. Mexico and cameroon in their group, got to be licking their chops after what they saw yesterday. Definitely a beatable team. Definitely beatable. Breaking news this morning. The american soldier held captive by terrorists for years, he is home. He finally returns home. Army Sergeant Bowe bergdahl arriving in texas just hours ago. Were live with the very latest. Crisis in iraq is escalating. Terrorists taking over cities, but this morning, the United States is pledging to help. The big question is, how much . We are live in iraq with whats happening right now. Rain, hail, ferocious wind, even flooding set to affect millions this fathers day weekend. Indra petersons tracking the storms, ahead. Welcome back to early start. Im christine romans. And im john berman. 31 minutes past the hour right now. And back on u. S. Soil. Army Sergeant Bowe bergdahl arriving just hours ago in san antonio on a flight from germany. The Army Sergeant will continue his rehab at the Brooke Army MedicalCenter Following his release after five years as a taliban prisoner. This is the third and final phase of bergdahls reintegration. Cnns Martin Savidge is live in san antonio for us. Martin, give us a sense of what today and the coming days will look like for Sergeant Bergdahl. Reporter a very critical time for Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. Good morning to you, john. Yeah, this is really the phase where he returns to life. I guess thats the best way you can kind of put it. Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl arrived in the middle of the night, was flown by military transport. He went from Ramstein Air Force base in germany, flown to nearby Lackland Air Force base, and from there, he was transported to the san antonio military medical center. Its part of the Brooke Army Medical center you mentioned. And hes now on a special floor, a special section that has been reserved for him. Let me just read you a portion of the statement that the army put out. It said that our focus remains on his health and wellbeing. Secretary hagel, the secretary of defense, is confident that the army will continue to ensure Sergeant Bergdahl receives the care, time and space he needs to complete his recovery and reintegration. I should point out something very important. All that is being done here is not because it is Sergeant Bowe bergdahl. It is being done, the u. S. Army says, because this is what they do for all returning captives that have been held. That is, those in the army and those in the department of defense. He has a personal recovery team, its called. There are hundreds of people that are part of this team. Yes, theres doctors, yes, theres psychiatrists, but other members you may not think about. There is a chaplain. There are attorneys. There are financial advisers. Theres transportation people, theres security people, theres Public Affairs people. It goes on and on. And all of them have been practicing almost from the time it was known that Bowe Bergdahl was in captivity. They have trained for his entire visit here ten times, i am told. John . Martin, i dont think any of us had a sense of the size of that operation. So, so interesting. Any idea when hell finally get to meet with his parents again and how that will be handled . Reporter yeah, you know, that is probably the most crucial part here of what is awkwardly called that reintegration process. The reunion is expected to be soon, but again, the army gives you no timeline. The family is expected to be in a hospital room, and he is expected to come in and meet with them. It is carefully handled because it is said to be the most emotionally overwhelming part of the entire return process. Theyll only talk for a few minutes, 20, 30, take a break for a few hours, then come back. That is based on long studies that the military has done of returnees who just say, look, it is like emotional overload. As much as they waited for that moment, it is tough to handle. You take small steps. John . Martin savidge in san antonio with really interesting details. Martin, thanks so much for being with us this morning. 34 minutes after the hour. The white house announcing that a dozen nonafghan detainees were just released from a military prison near kabul. Officials say a frenchman, a kuwaiti and ten pakistani prisoners will return to their respective home countries at the end of may. Some 38 nonafghans remain at the parwan detention center. They are the only detainees remaining in u. S. Custody in afghanist afghanistan. Many have not been charged with a crime. Now to iraq, where islamic militants continue their march toward the capital with iraqs military force seemingly unable to stop them. U. S. Officials believe baghdad is now in jeopardy of falling. Baghdad falling. And president obama says hes considering every option except sending u. S. Troops to help iraq in the fight against isis, the Islamic State of iraq in syria. Cnns arwa damon following developments live in iraq for us this morning. What can you tell us is the situation on the ground, arwa . Reporter good morning, christine. Well, the situation could not be more precarious for iraqs future at this stage. In the words of one iraqi politician, it is a complete and utter catastrophe. Isis, the Islamic State of iraq in syria, continues to maintain its grip on the countrys second largest city, mosul. When it comes to the oilrich city of kirkuk, it has established itself on the outskirts but was largely pushed back, not by the Iraqi Security forces, but by kurdish fighters. The Iraqi Security forces in the northern part of the country, as isis was advancing, effectively abandoned their positions, allowing isis to take control not just of key territory but also of military vehicles, heavy weaponry and ammunition. Some of that reportedly being moved to the battlegrounds in syria. Isis also controlling portions of baiji. That is where the countrys Largest Oil Refinery is located. And today, this morning, reports of it advancing in various other parts as well. Concerns, threats by isis that it is going to try to continue to push forward towards baghdad. Why has the organization been able to gain such rapid control over these parts of iraq . Well, these are predominantly sunni areas. These are areas where the population was already disenchanted with the predominantly shia government of nuri al maliki, feeling as if the shia government has been deliberately targeting them, alienating them over the last few years. But the situation we have right now, nearly three years after american boots left iraqi soil, is one where we have an entity that is even more ferocious, more merciless than al qaeda ever was, gaining greater control. And this is not just a problem that is confined to iraq. Isiss main aim is to extend an islamic tall fit from iraqi territory over into neighboring syria. At this stage, we are also seeing the reemergence of some sunni insurgent groups. We are seeing shia militias being called to arms as well. The nation very much finding itself on the brink of yet another incredibly bloody chapter, but isis will not be defeated by military might alone. There has to be mature, political reconciliation on the part of key iraqi actors so that an organization like isis cannot take advantage of the existing security vacuum that was left after the u. S. Troops withdrew, but so that it can also not continue to capitalize on the sunni populations disenchantment with the shia government, christine. Wow. Arwa damon for us this morning. Thanks, arwa. The politics of iraq front and center right now in washington. House Speaker John Boehner really lashing out at the president , saying the president made a mistake removing u. S. Troops so quickly and so completely, also accusing the president of taking a nap on iraq, ignoring the gains made by terrorists over the last year. Republicans now calling for air strikes against the militants. The Iraqi Government calling for the same thing. Meanwhile, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton is also weighing in. She says she is surprised by how effective the militant group isis has been. This is not just a syrian problem anymore. I never thought it was just a syrian problem. I thought it was a regional problem. I could not have predicted, however, the extent to which isis could be effective in seizing cities in iraq and trying to erase boundaries to create an Islamic State. Mrs. Clinton says whats happening in iraq is dreadful and a deteriorating situation. And that deteriorating situation is driving up oil prices right now. More than 107 a barrel, the highest price for oil since last september. Why . Iraq is the second biggest producer in opec, producing 3. 3 Million Barrels of oil every day. If that supply takes a hit, we could see prices skyrocket. So, it looks like majority whip Kevin Mccarthy may have a clear path to becoming John Boehners new number two in the house, replacing eric cantor. This is because texas congressman Pete Sessions has dropped out. In a statement, sessions says a fight for the leadership post would have created unnecessary and painful Division Within the republican ranks. Probably didnt hurt the fact that Kevin Mccarthys pretty much cleared a path for victory himself right now, gathering the votes he needed. Now the current majority leader, eric cantor, announced that he is stepping down on july 31st. He just lost a primary. Now to the growing humanitarian crisis involving immigrant children on the u. S. Border. Right now, thousands of undocumented children are shoved into overcrowded Holding Cells in nogales, arizona, waiting to be deported. These are kids whose parents are desperate to get them into american schools. Some of these kids are unaccompanied by their family. Theyve come from central america, sometimes with a note saying, please, reunite me with my parents who are in the country. I spoke exclusively with the education secretary, arne duncan, about this crisis. Well, its absolutely, you know, its brutal. Id say its inhumane, and we have far too many young people across the country who came here when they were 3 months old or 6 months old, theyve played by all the rules, and then we say they cant go to college . Were cutting off our nose to spite our face. It makes no sense whatsoever. Duncan says Immigration Reform remains a top priority for the administration. Its interesting, though, there are people who say this crisis in nogales and in texas is actually a crisis of the making of the administration because of things like the dream act, which what he talking about, and the fact that people come here and can get a job, even if they dont have, you know, the legal right to, and they want their kids to come. Its also interesting, people say it proves how important the immigration debate is, but at the same time, this crisis may make solving the immigration problem exactly. Even more politically difficult. Exactly. Time for an early start on your money. European stocks right now lower. Futures are also lower after a pullback yesterday. Growing concerns about that escalating violence in iraq. We told you, oil prices are rising above 107 a barrel. Experts say if this continues, youre going to feel it at the pump, probably in the next few weeks. Gas prices could climb 20 cents a gallon or more. Were now producing more oil in this country. Thats driving up wages for oil and gas workers. They earned about 11 an hour more in april than a year ago, but raises in this recovery have been not created equal.
