A laceration to the face. None were injured in the exchange of fire. I want to go to ferguson right now. Cnns sara sidner was there interviewing the interim police chief when the shots rang out. We know that the suspect who they think shot at police is in the hospital in unstable condition. Gravely wounded in surgery. Walk us through, sara, what happened. Reporter we dont know exactly what happened with the shooting of the person that police engaged. What we do know is where we were standing was a barrage of gunshots. The police line standing on west florissant trying to get about three dozen protesters to move back, we know that shooting did not happen at that police line where the protesters were standing. We can tell you it was at least several hundred yards away. It wasnt two or three. It was 10 or 15 or 18 gunshots that went off. Then after that, we heard another round of gun shots going off. Of course, as soon as they went off, everyone took cover. All of the police, all of the protesters gathered. The police were telling people to get out of the streets and take cover. Everyone did that. After that point in time, we were told by police about an hour later that someone had been shot and it was an officerinvolved shooting. The initial shooting, we still do not know who was involved in that. From our advantage point, it wasnt the officers on the protest line. Something happened far away from th that. We are trying to get details. It was a chaotic scene. We are hearing some details from st. Louis and the police chief there. St. Louis county police chief john belmar. In the meantime, plain clothed detectives were down north from where we were at the time in ferguson and west florissant. They were monitoring an individual in the crowd they believed was armed. They believe three or four of his acquaintances were armed also. They had put a 1068 or informational bulletin out over the radio that this individual, they described him, was armed and we should be aware of it in that area. The concern of the detectives also at the time was that are we going to get in the situation where perhaps shots could be fired. The skirmish line. The officers are standing there. They are standing behind the folks out there protesting and voicing their opinions. So, i dont know exactly what time it was. Some of this was captured on local media to where several shots rang out. Im guessing 40 or 50. Probably over 45 seconds. It could have been a little bit longer than that. That was an exchange of gunfire between two groups. These groups were on the west side of west florissant near the sams market. At the same time, these plain clothed detectives are located one building to the south of where the actual shooting, the officer involved shooting, is going to take place. The individual they are tracking crosses the street. He gets all the way to the shoulder. They think at the time he probab probably gathers himself and he will go across the street. They go out into the unmarked suv, but it has interior red and blue lights illuminated. The suspect engages them with gunfire almost at the grill of the car. Strike the hood. I dont know if you have seen pictures of it yet. Three or four times, strikes the windshield four or five times. The detectives return fire from inside the van. They dont know if they hit him or not. The suspect ran to the east on the north side of the building. He turned back around as the detectives got out of the car. Shots were fired again. He ran around behind the building to the south. Thats a fenced area back there. So there was really nowhere to go at that point. He engaged the officers at the time. There were four officers in that van. All four fired at the suspect and the suspect fell there. Suspect is in a local hospital. He is in critical, unstable condition in surgery. Reporter so you are hearing the details there. Chief belmar explained there were indeed different shootings that happened. One between two groups and one where officers engaged a suspect they believe to have a gun. We are now hearing from them. Obviously they are talking about the fact they did indeed strike someone. They believe he had a. 9millimeter on him. He had been taken to the hospital in critical and unstable condition. An officer was injured separate of the shooting. Not hit with gun fire, but a brick. A female officer has been injured. We are waiting to hear more details about anyone else who may have been hurt during this really intense time where two shootings happened one right after the other. Christine. One after the other. Chief belmar concerned. The reason they had those undercover plain clothes officers there watching the crowd. They were very concerned about the line of unformed officers who were just sitting targeting. If someone had an illegal gun. That gun recovered from the shooting was stolen. I was struck by something he said in the press conference where he said something has to change. Its been a year. They have been doing all kinds of reforms in the city, but if you have criminal elements, he needs more help from the community to try to stop that. Listen to what he said specifically about small group of people who do not want to preserve the peace. Listen. While this is a tragedy for the family of this man and certainly for the officers involved, it is truly a tragedy, there is a small group of people out there that are intent on making sure we dont have peace that prevails. I dont know how else to say that. But thats just the bottom line on this. Thats unfortunate. Because with the folks that were in the street last night, listen, a lot of emotions. I get it. This is something different. We cant sustain this as a community as we move forward. We have other individuals out there who are part of this group. We need the publics help. We cant do it by ourselves. We have to have the Community Helping us and working with us to identify this and make this stop. He says, sara, basically they are still close to another tragetra tragetra tragedy there. They are still close to that from a year ago. Reporter yes, there is still an uncomfortable unsettling feeling here because people believe the city has not changed enough. There have been changes. There is a new interim police chief. First black ever police chief. First black city manager to manage the city. And there are two new City Council Members who were voted in. Both of them are black. City government is starting to reflect the population, which is 67 africanamerican in this city. There have been changes, but some people are saying the frustration and changes have not gotten down to the grassroots problems here which is racially hinged and people feeling like they were harassed by police. That being said, this has been a fairly peaceful week. There hasnt been anything like. This i have been here for the week when people were commemorating Michael Browns death. People are sad about what happened to a young man who died so early and killed. They also point to the fact that the officer was exonerated by a grand jury who decided not to indict him in the shooting and the department of justice who looked to see if there were civil rights violations. They found none. He was, in essence, cleared of any wrongdoing in this case. There are still people here that do not believe that and still very angry about the decision made by both the grand jury more the grand jury than the doj. There are elements in the crowds that really have no intention of being protesters. They are there to take advantage of the protests. We saw that today. There was looting at a coupleoff businesses. The Business People who are here stayed here throughout all this. Reopened their stores. Unboarded their stores. Fixed windows. Now again being hit. Very frustrating for the residents who love the city. Residents admit something has to change, but enjoy being here and are not leaving. One year after a Police Officer shot and killed Michael Brown. Cnn reporters on the ground say there were at least three rounds of gunfire. Reporter basically i was actually on my way somewhere down that road after going to an event tonight that was calm. There were dozens of people who went to listen to speakers from the civil rights movement. I made my way through the city and got trapped, basically, like several other people. We saw a line of people standing in front of police and having words with police and protesters standing their ground. A few minutes in, we hear the sounds of gunfire as i listen to the interim police chief who has just gotten here two weeks ago and talking about being patient and let things not explode into unnecessary violence. Fascinating to see his eyes turn with the sound of gunshots and everyone was told to get down. Police in the streets were told to take cover. They had nowhere to go. They had to dive down behind their cars. The protesters themselves trying to get out of the way of the barrage of gunfire that happened a few hundred yards away from the police line where protesters were lined up. There were people that we saw and businesses that we saw that had been broken into. There were some looting that happened earlier just maybe a few minutes from when those shootings happened. We heard the first barrage of gunfire and then a few minutes later, we heard a second blast of gunfire. Fewer shots, but we certainly heard two separate shootings. Now we understand why. The police have talked about the fact there was one incident where there were people shooting at one another. When police engage, police say some of the suspects turned to shoot at police. Shot at a police car and hitting that car, but not injuring any officer inside. Then the officers engaged with the people who were believed to be suspects. We are trying to find out who the suspect is. People believe he is from the ferguson area. Right now, we know from Police Officials he is in unstable, but Critical Condition in the hospital after be shot by a Police Officer. I do want to talk to you a little bit about the scene here earlier. It was completely peaceful. I have been here now for a week doing stories on the changes here since Michael Browns death at the hands of officer darren wilson. Since then, this started a movement in ferguson. People talking about the relationship with police and africanamericans. We are seeing a bubbling up of violence again. The police speaking about this being a small segment, but having a big effect on the situation here. While this is a tragedy for the family of this man and certainly for the officers involved, it is truly a tragedy, there is a small group of people out there who are intent on making sure we dont have peace that prevails. What we are really seeing now is the resurgence of something. Nobody knows what, but the police are careful to say they believe these are just criminals, not part of the protest movement. Sara, he told reporters that they did recover a handgun, a stolen handgun from the scene. Hes concerned about guns. He said there are people and elements there with guns. He is worried about a potential tragedy with the legitimate protesters and with the police while you have guns on those streets. Reporter absolutely. He has every right to worry because now i have been out here for a very long time. I spent several months here. I can tell you that when we were out in the streets today after we heard that first barrage of gunfire and the second, which was the police evngaging the second. We walked down canfield where Michael Brown was killed and another round of gunfire within that Community Inside an apartment complex. People started scattering and running as we were tribying to t out of the way. We saw smoke bombs released by police to try to disburse the crowd. When you have a crowd of people, even if it is shot in the crowd, it has to on come down somewhere. Residents are saying what are you doing . If you are there to protest, that is your constitutional right. Whoever is bringing guns and using those guns in the situation where there are young people around out and about, what are you thinking . The only thing they can come up with as well as police, you are there not for protesting. You are there for something else. To either disrupt or to do things like loot stores and break windows.
