Steelers' Picks May Surprise, Excite You If Mel Kiper's Mock Draft Is Right

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be inclined to select one of college football's biggest names with their first-round pick in the upcoming 2021 NFL Draft.
Mel Kiper Jr. has the Steelers taking former Alabama star
Najee Harris at No. 24 overall to address their need at the running back position in his latest two-round mock draft (subscription needed.)
Kiper acknowledged that his projection has the Steelers ignoring their biggest draft need, offensive line, but believes Harris' skill set fits perfectly in a Pittsburgh offense that's relied on its running backs to "grind down defenses" and provide a short passing option out of the backfield.

Pittsburgh Steeler 2021 NFL Draft fits: Looking at the Quarterbacks

TIER ONE: QBs the Steelers (probably) have no shot at
Trevor Lawrence (Clemson)
Kevin: One of the beautiful things about being a Steelers’ fan is we generally have no idea what it’s like to have the #1 overall pick in the draft. That speaks to the success of the organization in the Super Bowl era. The last time we did have the top pick I was in diapers. We aced that one, taking Terry Bradshaw. Having the #1 pick doesn’t need to produce four Lombardi trophies, the way Bradshaw’s selection did. But it does need to yield a player who can drastically improve your franchise.

Kiper Jr. Predicts 6 Bama Players in Latest Mock Draft
In Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft, the veteran draft analyst predicted six total Crimson Tide alumni being selected in the first round of the upcoming NFL Draft. This comes just over two weeks before the National Football League holds its annual selection ceremony.
Mac Jones (QB) - The
San Francisco 49ers became heavy favorites to get Alabama quarterback Mac Jones when the team traded with the Miami Dolphins to climb to the third-overall pick.
“Every sign two weeks out from the draft points to general manager John Lynch and coach Kyle Shanahan being infatuated with Jones,” Kiper writes. “I think he's the quarterback they traded up nine spots to take.”

Justin Fields or Trey Lance: Analyzing Which QB Fits Denver Broncos Best - Sports Illustrated Mile High Huddle: Denver Broncos News, Analysis and More

Apr 12, 2021
The Sam Darnold trade to the Carolina Panthers has created an opportunity for the Denver Broncos to acquire one of the top quarterbacks in the upcoming NFL draft class. With Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and BYU’s Zach Wilson likely spoken for at picks No. 1 and 2 overall, GM George Paton has an opening to go on the offensive and to trade up to draft a highly touted quarterback like Ohio State's Justin Fields or North Dakota State'sTrey Lance.
Both Fields and Lance have the talent and potential to become any team's long-sought-after franchise quarterback. But Paton would have to pay a king’s ransom to move up to pick No. 4 overall to secure one of them.

NFL Rumors: Broncos, Steelers Interested In Quarterback On Trade Block?
04/08/21 AT 4:09 PM
Yet another starting quarterback may be playing for a new team in 2021. After acquiring Sam Darnold from the New York Jets, the Carolina Panthers have reportedly made Teddy Bridgewater available.
Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer has given Bridgewater permission to seek a trade, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. The expectation is that Bridgewater will land with a team that is looking for an upgrade at backup quarterback.
Bridgewater went 5-0 as the New Orleans Saints starter in 2019 when Drew Brees was sidelined. That helped him earn a three-year, $63 million contract with Carolina. In his one season as the Panthers’ starter, Bridgewater went 4-11 with 3,733 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 92.1 passer rating.

O-Zone: Perfect match

Tom from Charlottesville, VA
It is becoming annoying with all the talk about 3-4 and 4-3! Don't the fans know that the new defense will have 11 men on the line to rush the passer?
Ah, you jest – but there understandably remains much interest in the Jaguars' defensive scheme. I spoke to Jaguars defensive coordinator Joe Cullen about this for a story that will post on Jaguars.com in the coming days. I specifically asked how he would describe the defense, and would it be a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme. He said while it will have elements of a 3-4 in some situations it also will have elements of a 4-3 in other situations. He said there will be many different looks and personnel groupings based on circumstance. There will be times, for example, when linebackers Myles Jack, Joe Schobert and defensive ends/linebackers K'Lavon Chaisson and Josh Allen play at the same time – and there will be other times when those four players aren't on the field at the same time. This will be based on situations and the approach of the opponent. Cullen's biggest emphasis throughout the conversation was that the scheme will be aggressive – and that generally speaking, how much it gears toward a traditional "3-4" or "4-3" will depend largely upon the Jaguars' personnel. That means he knows more about specifically how it will look now than he did two months ago before free agency, but that he doesn't know as much about how it will look now as he will after the draft later this month. The key word to describe the defense? Hybrid. So as much as observers and fans want to fit the defense neatly into a specific idea of "scheme," that's simply not possible. More importantly, it's not accurate.

Could the Steelers be interested in trading up for QB Justin Fields?

Card image cap

As we approach the NFL Draft more stories, clips, and inside analysis comes out and better helps in predicting where prospects will go. A couple of those storylines directly tie the Pittsburgh to Ohio State quarterback, Justin Fields. As well as, suggest he is much lower on the teams draft boards than originally expected. To put it simply, there’s both a will and a way.
Jamin Davis. Most mocks I've seen have him as a day 3 guy which is silly. He's borderline late round 1.
As for guys going lower... there are teams way lower on guys like Sewell and Fields than fans/media think. Not all...both could go top ten. Both could also not. https://t.co/kOsLTRcDMd— Benjamin Allbright (@AllbrightNFL) April 8, 2021

Let's get to it:
FEDERICO JIMENEZ FROM QUERETARO, MÉXICO: In the April 6 Asked and Answered, you mentioned that one of the Steelers "needs" in the draft is an outside linebacker. Does that means that Alex Highsmith isn't starter caliber?
ANSWER: Alex Highsmith was drafted in 2020 to be a starter in 2021, and he will be a starter in 2021, barring injury. But to be at his most effective over the course of an entire regular season, T.J. Watt likes/needs a few snaps off over the course of a game to keep his energy level high for the fourth quarter, and based on his production there's nothing wrong with that. But after Watt and Highsmith, who among the outside linebackers currently on the roster would you feel comfortable inserting into the second half of a close game against the Ravens? That's why I view outside linebacker as a need.

NFL Teams Most Likely to Trade Up in the 2021 NFL Draft

Card image cap

Brynn Anderson/Associated Press
The 2021 NFL draft is three weeks away, but teams are already making moves in the first round. The San Francisco 49ers traded up to No. 3, while the Miami Dolphins went from No. 3 to No. 12 and back up to No. 6.
Predraft trades aren't unheard of. The Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles moved up ahead of the 2016 draft, while the New York Jets did the same in 2018.
More trades could be on the horizon, as both the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions are open to moving down, according to Albert Breer of
Sports Illustrated. Movement is also likely to occur during the draft.

A QB who can run would help the Steelers in the post-Ben Roethlisberger

Card image cap

With Ben Roethlisberger returning as the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 2021, changes in the team’s offense will likely be subtle. New coordinator Matt Canada may bring more shifts and motions to the table and will likely try to convince Roethlisberger to use more play-action and personnel groupings than he has in the past. But, for the most part, the offense will still rely upon Roethlisberger’s ability to throw the football from the pocket as its primary mode of attack.
I don’t know what the Steelers have in mind for their post-Roethlisberger offense, but, with the future Hall-of-Famer now 39 years old, they will need to turn their attention soon to finding his successor. Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins are the current backups. One or both may be given a shot to claim the starting job when Roethlisberger steps away. It is unlikely, however, that either is the long-term solution. Given how a new wave of young, mobile quarterbacks are reshaping the position, my hope is the Steelers will find a player who, in addition to being a proficient passer, is athletic enough to incorporate more quarterback run schemes into the offense when they decide on his replacement.

Blockchains CEO, wife face sexual harassment lawsuit from former nanny

Jeffrey Berns, the tech CEO asking the Nevada Legislature to let him form his own government in Storey County, has been sued by a former nanny who is accusing Berns and his wife, Mary, of trying to groom her “to participate in three-person sex” with the couple, according to court documents obtained by the Reno Gazette Journal.
The woman, 45-year-old Rebecca Eller, said the couple lured her into employment as a tutor for their daughter, offering her a high salary, medical benefits and free living accommodations on their property. It soon became clear, she alleged in the lawsuit, that the couple expected her to be a “sexual object” for them and subjected her to an environment that was “sexually pervasive, degrading and insulting.”

An in-depth look at Steelers fans offseason obsessions in 2021 - Behind the Steel Curtain

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports
The National Football League just moved to implement a 17 week season, which provides fans over four months of weekly intensity. But for legions of die hard fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers, it’s a 365-day-a-year obsession.
While many normal, and probably well-adjusted, fans move on to other pursuits once the Super Bowl concludes, the obsessed worry and opine about their beloved team even more. After all, the offseason always engenders hope for the future, as well as fears.
If you’re reading this site and watching the NFL Network daily this time of year, chances are you pass the litmus test of the obsessed.
