The governor deploying 600 members of the National Guard with the state experiencing rainfall totals never seen before. The governor calls this a once in a 1,000 year weather event. It has triggered more than 200 water rescues. Roads all over the state shutdown by flooding. Cars and trucks washed away. Look at the aerial view where water levels rising so fast that the coast guard had to air lift this mother and 15monthold infant to safety. Look at the folks in columbia. I cant get over the water. Raging waist deep waters. Holding on to a stop sign. Rescue operations set to begin in the state capital today. The torrential rain and floods leaving some with no choice but to completely rebuild. We have lost everything. What i got on my body is everything. Pretty much everybody down that hill has lost everything. Vehicles, clothes, everything. The best thing is we still have our lives. More than 18 inches to 24 inches of rain in places in that state in a day or less. You can just see how powerful the force of that water is right now. Catastrophic flash flooding. There is more rain in the forecast. Lets get the latest from meteorologist pedram javaheri. One of the more impressive rain events. You look at the numbers. 24 inches out of mt. Pleasant outside o of charleston. 65 billion gallons of water. That is the same amount that falls over the Niagara Falls in a weekend. You calculate the average rainfall amounts in a wide area where we saw up to 20 plus inches. You do the math and you are talking about 6. 7 million olympic sized Swimming Pools. That is how much water came down on top of South Carolina. That is equal to taking every person in the state of massachusetts and giving them an olympic size Swimming Pool and filling it up. Some areas could still see upwards of 1 to 2 inches across the northern portion of South Carolina outside of myrtle beach and some models not far from columbia with additional 1 to 2 inches in the next 24 hours. The vast majority will taper off tuesday morning. Flood watches and warnings in place. The concern is so many roads have been damaged or destroyed. If anyone tries to get outside, they make the wrong turn and they go down another road, they could enter a dangerous place. Pay attention to all of the advisories. Pedram, thank you. Columbia, they are looking at the hospitals there and thinking about if they need to evacuate the hospitals because they dont have fresh water. The water has knocked out fresh water system. All of the Emergency Management people with their hands full. One of the hardest hit areas is georgetown. Ems workers and National Guard stretched to the limit. A man drove around a barricade and his car swept away. He had to be rescued by boat while he was clinging to a tree. Lets get more from cnns boris sanchez. Reporter john and christine, georgetown is one of the hardest hit areas in South Carolina. Part of the reason for that is the city lies at the bottom of a geographical bowl with rivers all around town. This keeps happening. An inlet to my left where the water keeps rising. It has risen into the businesses more than once. One of them is getting pumped right now, but it is likely not to make a huge difference. The water is expected to rise again as the rainfall continues into the day. When we arrived, there was a Police Barricade not letting anyone through. A lot of the roads are disshelved. We had gas leaks as well as several structure fires here. So authorities are really rushing to emergencies left and right. We spoke to two ambulance workers who had been going for more than 24 hours and every ambulance in the city is out attending to emergencies. Fortunately, it appears most people are safe. The mayor of georgetown, i spoke with him. He told me it is better for people to just stay home and be safe and go against that natural curiosity to come out and see what is going on. Coast guard has discovered a 225 square mile debris field in the Caribbean Sea in the search for the missing container ship. The jacksonville, florida cargo ship was carrying 23 americans and 5 polish nationals. It was on the way to puerto rico when it went missing last week. Crews finding wood and life jackets and oil sheen in the debris field. Still no positive confirmation it came from the missing ship. The air force and navy are assisting the coast guard in the search. They covered 70,000 square nautical miles. The father of the gunman in oregon says he has no idea how his son got the weapons. He just came in and shot toward the back of the wall and told everybody to get to the center of the room on the ground. Did he hit anyone when he first shot that first shot . He just got everybodys attention and everybody looked over to the door and he had gun was him and he was armed. He had a bulletproof vest on. He didnt seem like he was anxious or anything. He seemed like he wanted to do that. He seemed happy about it. He didnt seem stressed. He didnt seem nervous. When he came in, he told everybody to get on the ground. Everybody tried to huddle to the ground and the girl in the wheelchair got off and tried to get on the ground. Wait. There was a woman in a wheelchair . Yeah. She had a dog with her. The dog was just on the ground. She got off the chair and she went on the ground. He told her to get back on the chair. Then she tried to climb back on the chair. He shot her. We knew the previous flood gauge in columbia was 9. 4 feet. We had an observation of 17 feet. The water was so high, it broke off. We dont know how much higher it got. You talk about a foot of water moving downstream, it has 500 pounds of lateral force behind it. Incredible. You take a moving box, a one yard by one yard. You have 1,700 pounds of weight if you fill it with water. You put a couple of these down on the road, it could easily move a vehicle. This is very dangerous.
