Donald trump, he held a news conference, saying he is the candidate who can bring the party together. Im a unifier. People will find that hard to believe. But i am a unifier. Once we get all of this finished, im going to go after one person. Thats Hillary Clinton, on the assumption she is allowed to run. Donald trump, not the only republican in the win column. Ted cruz carried his home state of texas. Scored a big important win in oklahoma, as well. And marco rubio, won the caucuses in minnesota. His first victory since voting began this year. His only victory. I should note, we are still waiting an alaska. On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton locks and wins in seven states across the south. And a big wickup in the northeast. Alabama, arkansas, georgia, massachusetts, tennessee, texas and virginia. Bernie sanders picked up four wins in vermont. Oklahoma, california and minnesota. Clinton talking to supporters as the results coming in, went after the republican field. Its clear tonight that the stakes in this election have never been higher. And the rhetoric we are hearing on the other side has never been lower. Trying to divide america between us and them is wrong. And were not going to let it work. Lets get to m. J. Lee. She is looking at the state of play. As john said, it was a super tuesday. Maybe more super than some. But a lot of the candidates leaving super tuesday with a different narrative this morning. Thats right, guys. I think the two big headlines coming out of tonight are, that donald trump had a very good night. And that Hillary Clinton had a very good night. And i think we were expecting both of those outcomes, heading into super tuesday. And i think tonight was all about donald trump and Hillary Clinton. Showing they both have a national coalition. And a broad base of support, that can win them the nominations and also the support that they can take to the general election in november. Donald trump, after winning the early states of new hampshire, south carolina, nevada, showing he can win a more moderate state like massachusetts. And more deeply conservative states. And evangelicalheavy states across the south. And for Hillary Clinton, who had more of a rocky start in the early states because Bernie Sanders really gave her a run for her money. She was able to prove in part, in large part, by really capturing the minority vote, including hispanics, among africanamericans. She has a national coalition. Trump and clinton, and both of the campaigns are probably happy at the results of tonight. And really, after tonight, eyeing the general election. M. J. , stay with us. Lets bring in josh brogan and dylan byers, our Senior Reporter and National Political reporter, maeve reston, and ron brownstein, Senior Editor for the atlantic. Ron, where did you see the support for donald trump . What surprised you about the big win for donald trump . How big was it . If anyone else had won alabama and vermont, arkansas and massachusetts, not to mention georgia and virginia, we would be saying this race is over. That was something that mitt romney could not do in 2012 when he was the nominee. Something that john mccain could not do. No one else in recent times has been able to bridge the geographic divide because Donald Trumps support does not fall along the usual lines we have seen in republican politics, which have divided the party along lines of ideology and whether youre an evangelical. Its whether you are whitecollar, collegeeducated or not. In every state, donald trump is running well among blue collar republicans. He was 47 to 50 , which is striking in a field this large. He does not run as well among the college republicans. But no one has been able to consolidate that. And that story is true no matter where you are in the country. Whats different this year, is because there is so much resistance to donald trump, among the leadership of the party, a race that would be on the brink of being over, people are looking for a way to continue it and take it forward. Can they find a plausible path to stopping him . Vermont, alabama, i thought you were going to sing a Woody Guthrie sign there. For the democratic race, Hillary Clinton with a lot of big wins. Bernie sanders on the board. On the board. Hes made it clear this race is going to go on for quite some time. When you look at the delegate numbers coming out of tonight, Bernie Sanders did not have a bad night at all. At least four wins that hes got up on the board. And he pulled it in a huge hall. And will be able to keep this race going. At the same time, he showed his limitati limitations, doing well in states that are white voters. Hillary clinton really showed her dominance among africanamerican voters and looking in texas, she showed a huge lead among latino voters. Showing that she does well in those Traditional Democratic sto strongholds. Josh, marco rubio, he has a win in the win column. He has a mark in the win column. This is a big night for him. Yes. Marco rubio beat expectations, which is the crucial thing. By not losing everywhere . Exactly. You can only win your first state once. And hes done it. That will eliminate ted cruzs line that anyone who hasnt dropped a state should drop out. Hes the only candidate thats beaten donald trump in three states. Exactly. Theres good signs for marco rubio, that his campaign is putting out notsosubtly today. If you look at the polls, compared to the results, that marco rubio beat the polls, especially in minnesota and virginia. Also, ted cruz beat the expectations in oklahoma. So, what were seeing is a narrative of slippage. The fact that donald trump has polls. And he is not beating the polls. That presents an opportunity. And marco rubio is about to be bolstered by millions of super pac and not organization money. We saw some of that. Now until march 15th, two, huge groups that are ready, the marco rubio donors have come off the fence. Theyre in the game. They have skin in the game. Nobody knows if that will have an effect. But for the first time, were going to see billions of dollars in antitrump ads. And those are mostly by marco rubio donors. Thats the most glass halffull analysis of one win out of 11. Im not picking on josh. Thats what the rubio people and Establishment Republicans are saying right now. And the funny thing is, for every rubio person is, ted cruz should be able to say that three times more . Thats true. The Rubio Campaign has been a study in how many times can you spin a loss . The Ted Cruz Campaign has been a study in that, as well. Like you said, in any other republican win season, the wins that trump has pulled off, the margins of victories, he should be the nominee. The reason he is not because hes effectively trying to take over stage a hostile takeover of the Republican Party. And theres a lot of voices that want to back rubio. And Ted Cruz Making a case that hes the only candidate thats beat donald trump in multiple states. For rubio, hes looking forward to march 15th. Looking forward to florida and ohio. Hes trailing donald trump by 15 to 20 points. Its hard to see what his path forward is. Beating the polls in florida dont bring you any delegates. You have to beat candidates. You can kill the polls. Arkansas was part of ted cruzs firewall. What are Republican Voters saying here. I want to go over the things that were said. You saw limits for ted cruz and marco rubio tonight. Theres 13 states with exit polls. Only in two of them has he gotten above 18 among voters that are not evangelicals. And the big, heavy evangelical states. He didnt win south carolina, arkansas, alabama. He won oklahoma and hes the three states that hes won, have had 63 of the vote. And if youre going to win 20 or less of evangelicals, i think that dye is cast, theres few places for him to go from this place forward that are natural for him other than places like louisiana and mississippi. He cant advance beyond the evangelical beachhead. In rubio, when he was standing on a stage with nikki haley and tim scott, he might be gary hart, he looks like lamar alexander, circus 1996, where he has a little bit of support everywhere. But not deep enough support anymore anyone to win. And virginia was the place that he really had to put a stake. It was an electorate that was built for him. He did well in northern virginia. He won College Graduates with 38 of the vote. But he did not win them by enough. Donald trumps dominance on the blue collar side of the party is so great, if you beat him among College Graduates, thats not enough. Someone has to match his dominance on the other side. And no one has shown they can do that. There were people joking that marco rubio, the one area in virginia, he won, was inside the beltway. Literally, inside the beltway. Politicians supporting marco rubio. If you are awake right now, the one state you care about more than any other, the is alaska. The one state we have not called. And we have an update. Were counting votes. Cnn with a reporter in anchorage. Paul vercammen counting ballots. Here are the totals, 9,683 in. I will start ath alphabetically. Carson, 10. 2 of the vote. Ted cruz, 35. 5 of the vote. Kasich, 4. 8 of the vote. Rubio, 6. 8 of the vote. 16 as i read off a screen. And donald trump, 32. 7 of the vote. Thats with 9,683 projection. We know they are shattering records here in alaska tonight, in terms of turnout. Right now, it is difficult to gauge what percentage of the turnout this is. Looks like we could be around 25,000 votes. Not sure. Others said they thought they exceeded vote totals by a good 50 of the precincts. We were in wasilla and west anchorage, where we saw a dynamic, energized turnout. Democrats were switching over to republicans just for the night. Alaskans have a lot of independents. They are also voting for the gop. Looks like record shattering turnout here in alaska. 28 delegates at stake. They will divide these up. Its not winnertakeall. Do they have expectation when they believe when they believe they will have the counting all wrapped up this evening or into tomorrow . Welcome to alaska and the tricklein theory of votes. As you may or may not know, there are 40 districts and some of them so remote, they will email them in. Were going to go west of the aleutian islands. Were going to go to the north. They will hopefully be done here, maybe 45 minutes. Ill ask you. When do you think you will be counting here . Midnight our time. Thats 4 00 a. M. Your time. Youll have to watch for the tricklein theory, as alaska and its 40 districts, many of them completely remote, just sort of come in, vote by vote by vote. We look at a screen. Were going to get up live. We will show you how many of them are not just filled in yet. Paul vercammen, in anchorage, alaska. Ted cruz, 35. 5 . If cruz were able to hang on here, you know, this would be his third state. A wins a win a win. In this republican race. When they are counting well, hey. In this republican race, weve seen third place being a win. Second place being a win. But a win is a win. This is one of the few state wheres they use sea planes to fly in the election results. I dont know if thats true. I made that up. Were going to get back to it. Coming up for us, a huge night for donald trump, winning seven states. Does this make him unstoppable . Ted cruz says he has a plan to take down trump, as long as pretty much everyone else in the race drops out. Where the battle heads next. And one thats sweet. For the candidates, who have not yet won a state. Who have not wracked up significant delegates. I ask you to prayerfully consider, our coming together. Uniting. Ted cruz, speaking to reporters tonight. Calling on the party to come together, uniting. And he means the other candidates, not named trump. They should drop out. In other candidates, not named ted cruz, either. Ted cruz saying he is the only candidate that can beat, has beaten and will beat donald trump. But marco rubio says not so fast, as he gets his first primary win in minnesota. And he looks towards his home state of florida. That comes up on march 15th. Can rubio or cruz or kasich or ben carson . Can any of them defeat trump . Our team has been up all night around the country. M. J. , i want to start with you. Ted cruz saying everyone should drop out but me. At this point, as we sit here, no one else is dropping out . No one else is dropping out. And frankly, i think everyone in the race is hoping that the strategy of, well, if everyone accept donald trump drops out, i can imagine donald trump. And i dont think thats going to happen as much as ted cruz would like that to happen. Its interesting. Heading into his victory speech tonight, it was clear his message was going to be, im going to be beat donald trump. He had iowa, texas and oklahoma. Thats three wins against donald trump. We got the race for minnesota. He had made his i guess victory speech, even though he hadnt won that state yet. The optics were change. I dont know if you noticed this. But rubio, again, made his speech before the race was called for him in minnesota. This was a big moment for him. This was his first victory of the 2016 cycle. An i didnt feel like he seized on this. And i think this is going to be the problem and question for marco rubio. When are you going to stop being the candidate who is the second choice for voters . The candidate who is waiting behind donald trump, perhaps behind ted cruz, as well, for the voters not interested in them the and that they can turn to marco rubio. His message really has to turn to i can be a winner. If youre ted cruz, where are you putting your money . Where are you changing your travel schedule looking forward to now . He has a couple opportunities, in some of the states coming up. States like louisiana, mississippi. He can potentially do well with very conservative voters. Try to do better among ev evangelic evangelicals. I think for ted cruz, this was, you know, perhaps a betterthanexpected night. He won with a decent number in texas. He has a good number of delegates going in. But he doesnt have opportunities on the board coming up. His path to a lot of people could look like a dead end. Dylan byers, i want to talk about marco rubio. And the difference between marco rubio and donald trump. If we can put up the board again, the delegates to date right now. We have 302 for donald trump. And 174 for cruz. And he got blanked, a very big deal. 302104. That means hes more than ohio plus florida away from donald trump right now. Everybody is talk about the winnertakeall states. He could do both ohio and florida and trail donald trump. Hes in a hole. Thats right. But wins in ohio and florida would put him back on the board and reput up the narrative that he can take on donald trump, which is the narrative that ted cruz has taken. I want to jump on the point about cruz doing better than expected. He did better than expected, in the context of the last several weeks. But if you look at where the Cruz Campaign hoped to be months ago, the south was his firewall. The south was where he was going to win big. Now, looking at louisiana and mississippi, and coming out of the south losing to donald trump, that was supposed to be his strong point. Its hard to see what his path Going Forward is, unless he can turn the narrative that he is the only one that can beat donald trump that people rally behind. Im not sure what the path forward is for cruz. Guys, stand by. Theres a lot more to talk about. Namely, whats going to happen to the Republican Party . It is a serious, serious issue right now, with serious questions being raised. That, plus were going to count more votes in alaska. One thing to say about the delegates in alaska and hawaii, they will have a long road trip to cleveland. Back to you guys. Remember hanging out with delegates in minnesota in 2008. The republican delegates. They are the most funloving people on vacation. Thats amazing. Watching them count the votes in alaska. 149 votes separating the top two. This could be a big moment for ted cruz. After the biggest night in the election so far, did the results bring the clarity, that the voters and the establishment have been on both sides . Bernie sanders says he is taking his campaign to the convention. And the republicans show no sigsign s of backing out . Is the Republican Party splintered . The Republican Party, struggling with what to do Going Forward. You have people saying they will not vote for donald trump if he is the nominee. He is an existential crisis. Paul ryan and mitch mcconnell, speaking to their caucus against the leading republican candidate. Mitch mcconnell said if trump were the nominee, he would drop him like a hot rock. And you have the National Security hawks that cannot tolerate a donald trump presidency. He sees someone they cant trust with National Security. And at the same time, a lot of republicans are about to come out and endorse donald trump. Rick scott, the governor of florida, is about to endorse trump. And Newt Gingrich is speaking favorable. The vast majority of republicans are on the fence. They havent said one way or another. Thats a tenable position, especially to the race coming to your state. Thats what everyone is grappling with at this moment. On the fence, confused and splintered Republican Party. You look at the information coming out of the exit polls. Arkansas, virginia, he won these states tonight. You see it right there. Are you satisfied if donald trump wins the domination . 54 said no. 6 thats a head stretcher. It is a reminder that donald trump is a deeply polarizing figure. Less so in the Republican Party. But even there. And certainly in the country at large. As john was eluding here. We have two parties going the different direction. Bernie sanders cant win white voters consistently enough or by a large enough margin, to win the diverse states, given Hillary Clintons advantage among africanamericans. Her advantage among africanamericans is overwhelming. 80 plus, almost everywhere. All of the wig states are heavy diverse. And given the patterns, he is not going to be able to win any of them. That has a clear trajectory where its going. On the republican said, in a normal year, with any candidate, someone who would win, you would say they are the nominee. But donald trump is such a dramatic change of republican views and positions on many issues, there is a sense among many in the party, this amounts to a hostile takeover. What youre going so see is money and incentive for candidates to stay in much longer than they would have in a normal race, trying to find any way, if not to beat him individually, collectively deny him that first ballot majority. You can make the case that the bigger field is a way to go. If john kasich can win ohio or florida. You deny trump the nominee. Sfwli was just reading. You had a great piece on cnn. Com, that posted some time ago, with killer quotes from republican insiders who are terrified with the direction this is all going. Thats right. When josh described this as an existential crisis for the Republican Party, thats not an exaggeration. The Establishment Republicans, the Party Leaders i have spoken to, they are using words like catastrophic, cataclysmic. The end of the Republican Party as we know it. These are alarmist rhetoric were hearing. I spoke to tim pawlenty. He said that this is this moment in the party, is seeing the airplane. And the airplane represents the Republican Party. Were seeing pieces of the surface starting to come off the plane. Now, were wondering if the wing or theeningen will come off next. Seeing the Republican Party fractured. Members of the party dud not know what to do about donald trump and about his rise. Now, they are confronting a situation where this is right in front of them now right . He has won all of the states. He has dominated super tuesday. It looks like he is likely going to be the nominee. And the party has not come to terms with how are we going to fight him and stop him . Lindsey graham, senator from south carolina, who did no love lost with donald trump. He even said tonight, that might be coming to a point where the Republican Party may need to get behind ted cruz. You know that pains him to say that. You know anything about lindsey graham, that is not something that you would ever think would come out of his mouth. Thats a huge statement. Yeah. Those two cant stand each other. And havent been able to for some time. I think whats so interesting, m. J. Was talking about, the party is at this moment, where were going to see a lot of the donors. And republicans go hard over donald trump. Thinking that this is their final moment to knock him out. You know, you obviously have the antitrump super pac that was talking to donors today about how theyre going to do that. But the real question is, does that lend up helping Hillary Clinton at the end. You know, its so clear that theres a huge disconnect between the Establishment Republicans. And the voters who are turning out in droves, to support donald trump at the polls. And when you have that disconnect in the party, it is a crisis, that could, you know, that could end up handing the presidency to Hillary Clinton. Absolutely. Stand by. Much more to discus. Coming up, Hillary Clinton were going to be talking about Hillary Clinton. A big night for her. Winning 7 of the 11 states up for grabs for democrats. Whats the path forward, though. And why did the victory speep sound like Bernie Sanders this evening. Thats coming up next. One day a rider made a decision. The decision to ride on and save money. It is about making a political revolution. And what that revolution is about is bringing millions of millions of people into the political process. That was Bernie Sanders, speaking to supporters in his home state, vermont. His first of four victories of the night. Hillary clinton had the bigger night of the two on the democratic said, winning seven states. Lets bring back our allstar panel to discuss this. Dylan, one of the most striking things, when you lack at how Hillary Clinton won, its how she won in south carolina, and nevada, as well. Look at the africanamerican vote. She won 92 of the black vote. Georgia, 83 . As the exit polls update. But 85 in georgia. 93 in alabama. The africanamerican vote so crucial, as you move through these primary states. And theres plenty of black votes to be had in illinois and michigan. And plenty in ohio. These are states coming up. Its extremely crucial. And theres no question that she is short of support among the vast majority. We remember a big narrative coming out of ohio and new hampshire. Can buernie sanders pick up support in africanamericans and hispanics. Yes, he can pick up a few. But not nearly as many as Hillary Clinton can. Thats going to go a long way to put a Sanders Campaign tonight. Maybe not tonight. Maybe two weeks or a little while after that. And if you look at the exit polls coming out of the states, she has broadened her support, not just among latinos, africanamericans. She has broadened her support across age groups and income. The only area she hasnt been able to pick up is the 18yearold to 29yearold vote, which sanders picks up handily in every state. And that raises questions about the sort of Enthusiasm Gap with younger voters. You see that there in massachusetts. Sanders got 65 between 18 and 29yearolds. And that is a state that Hillary Clinton won. That is a soft spot, if you at the very lease, that Hillary Clinton has here. And has all along. Do you see her how does she appeal to those to that part of the Bernie Sanders support, without i dont know without alienating them at the same time. In some ways, the best thing that Hillary Clinton hz going for her here is donald trump. Shes started to refine her message, talking about there needs to be more love and happiness and togetherness in america. She is trying to unite the party against trump. That may help her pull in younger voters. This is a huge problem for her, her Enthusiasm Gap. And one that she will have to spend the rest of the year working on, if she pulls off the domination. The one person that can help her with this is barack obama, once he gets out on the campaign trail. He really could help her bring together those two parts of the party, she has not been able to unify yet. As you look ahead, in the next few states, michigan. A big debate sunday night. Flint, michigan. Based on what you saw tonight, on super tuesday, a broad range of states here, how does the map look for her . Some ways, i think the most revealing state was massachusetts, right . It was a state when Bernie Sanders ran even with clinton. Neighboring vermont. Her support among minority voters pushed her over the top. Thats the challenge he faces. Every large state on the democratic side is a diverse state. There is not a large state. California, new york, georgia, north carolina, michigan, illinois. Ohio. Go down the list. Theyre all substantial minority populations. And Bernie Sanders has done better because he has moved beyond the beachhead. He is competitive for working class whites. But he is not able to establish enough of an advantage, among the white voters to overcome a Hillary Clinton tsunami. She is 70 of africanamericans in every state. And 80 in almost every state. When you look at the advantage, of 2008. She won hispanic voters by 26 points. She lost because barack obama won 80 of africanamericans. We are seeing her do that and not having a definite among the other groups. Tough math for Bernie Sanders. They believe they may be able to make more inroads outside of the south. That is going to be tested quickly, in michigan, illinois and ohio. Well learn that season. Guys, stand by. Why . We have an important update from alaska, the one state still counting votes. And reminding you, the delegates are proportional. The numbers come in to us here in alaska. And everyone is celebrating democracy in action. Were going to stay on until we get the alaska results. Paul vercammen, thank you very much. We are waiting for them all to come in. Josh, 28 delegates at stake. Proportional. This could be a third pickup for ted cruise tonight. Thats right. Every dell gegates count. He could be 20 or 30. Marco rubio is going to be down 100 delegates. But the game is to prevent trump from getting to the magic number, 1,237. If he gets there, its over. Every delegate that everybody gets is one that donald trump doesnt get. And that keeps this going longer and longer. I do not think it is lost on anyone that sarah palin, the foreman governor of alaska, the former nominee of the Vice President ial, that she endorsed donald trump. I am sure it would be gratifying for the cruz folks that wanted the palin endorsement. That would be a huge victory for the Ted Cruz Campaign. When donald trump announced the sarah palin announcement, this was a big get for them. The former v. P. Nominee. Very popular, even though her clout may have dpiminished sinc the last cycle. Popular among conservatives. And donald trump thought that palin could help win over evangelicals. She hasnt been on the road very much with him. And ever since the Chris Christie endorsement, he has been playing more the role of really surrogate, introducing trump on stage. I think if donald trump lost alaska after all of that, that would be a big disappointment for him. One thing we heard on both sides, the commentary tonight, and will continue to hear, is campaigns dont stop running. They just run out of money. The money thing, looking forward, money is no shortage of in this election. Does that suggest to you that theres no motivation on the republican side and the democratic side. Bernie sanders hauled in a huge number for february, for anyone to do anything other than take it to the convention. Thats exactly right. If you look at Bernie Sanders, my guess is that his campaign quietly is coming to terms with the fact that hes probably not going to win the democratic nomination. But look, from the beginning before Bernie Sanders had his sort of catastrophic rise meteoric rise, his campaign was really about pushing a democratic socialist agenda. A liberal agenda, and moving Hillary Clinton towards the left. Hes been effective doing that. The longer he can go on as long as he has money, he will continue to do it. Stick with us.
