She has to deal with Bernie Sanders for a while. That is right. She showed she was aware of that last night. There is no more of the attack donald trump rather than Bernie Sanders thing. It was hand to hand combat the entire two hours. The Immigration Exchange was a great example of that. Hillary clinton really came ready to unload on sanders. She was attacking him for 2007 vote. She was ready to go further than he was and president obama has on stopping deportations. She clearly was not afraid of being dragged to the left on that issue. Something that could come back as a significant point of contention in the general election. Hillary clinton came prepared to fight. Sanders seemed to be getting more and more comfortable with his economic message. The timing is key. Not only do we have a bunch of big races on tuesday, but this could be the last democratic debate. The last one on the calendar. This is the final opportunity to go headtohead like that for these candidates. She longed talked about the affordability of college. She is making sure kids can graduate from College Without debt after four years. Bernie sanders is selling free college and Free Health Care and tax hikes for the rich. Breaking up the banks. He has opinion cbeen consistent. She is the rational one to get something done is what she is talking about and he is selling a pipe dream. Is that going to work . Is that going to work in ohio . It is a tough sell. It is tough to argue that democratic based voters hopes and dreams are unrealistic. Hillary clinton had a fascinating moment in the debate where she said look, im not that good at this. Im not that good at politics. Im not bill clinton. Im not barack obama. Im a policy wonk. We will play that. I think we have that bite lined up. What is interesting about this is for someone in the political eye for decades, occasionally she reveals a little bit more. Listen. I am not a natural politician in case you havent noticed like my husband or president obama. So i have a view that i just have to do the best i can and get the results i can and make a difference in peoples lives and hope that people see that im fighting for them. Is that going to help her connect to Younger Voters . One of her big weak areas. Hard to tell. Authenticity is a problem for Hillary Clinton. People believe that Bernie Sanders says what he means. So, revealing a bit of herself that way is important. It is a way to sort of say, this is who i am. This is what i am. To explain the failings of her campaign at times. Why she can never really run away with things. Why she is always in a dog fight. I thought it was a striking moment. It was probably the most memorable moment of last night. What about wall street speeches . She was a new york senator. Wall street was right in her backyard. She did go to wall street in the days before the financial crash and said subprime mortgages. Cut it out as she has put it. Bernie sanders has tried to paint her as too cozy to wall street. He is the guy to fix the system thats rigged against the little guy. He continued to hammer on that last night, eric. He did. You know, part of why this is so effective for him is Bernie Sanders position is not complicated. Hillary clintons is. She does leave room for compromise. He doesnt. This is something that has been a problem for her for months. These wall street speeches. He has been saying look, release the transcripts. Show an increasing willingness to attack her on the debate stage over it. Clinton still doesnt have a good answer. She doesnt have a good explanation for why she wont release them. She says, well, ill do it when the republicans release all their speeches and when Bernie Sanders releases his. Sanders has a great comeback to that. He throws his hands up and says here are my wall street speeches. There are none. This is something that has continued to hamper her and calls her credibility on these issues into question which drives her crazy because she has so many specific policy proposals that she thinks are stronger than sanders. That was the democrats last night. That was the heat. That may be nothing compared to what we get tonight at the university of miami. Donald trump is not going to stop being aggressive on the debate stage. The question is who his target is. The guy he calls little marco or does he go after ted cruz. Lying ted. He has nicknames for everybody except john kasich. And voters have rewarded that behavior. That salesmanship and confidence with maybe not much policy prescription behind it. I want to listen to the interview he had with Anderson Cooper last night. Do you think islam is at war with the west . I think islam hates us. Theres something there thats a tremendous hatred there. We have to get to the bottom of it. Theres an unbelievable hatred of us. You will have to figure that out. The question is, is there a war with the west and radical islam or the west and islam itself . It is hard to define. You dont know who is who. Islam hates us. But whats the policy prescription . If you listen to cruz, he is the only legitimate competitor to donald trump. He got endorsed by Carly Fiorina yesterday. Ted cruz with new information on the contested convention. Up until now, he said no. Now all of a sudden. Look, reagan and ford battled it out in a contested convention. If you are fighting between the candidates who earned the votes of the people and the delegates at convention is the way the system works. Sounds like what ted cruz is saying he is okay with the notion of the contested convention as long as he is one of the two contestants. Absolutely. Ted cruz is the most carefully calibrated candidate out there right now. He is the one of the most calibrated candidates i have ever seen. He loves the details and politics of it. A little shift like that, him starting to acknowledge that he would be competing in a contested convention is significant. We cannot understate that. What this means is how do you get there . Is it john kasich winning ohio and competing and more moderate Eastern States and denying trump anything close to the number of delegates . Or is it a oneonone race with cruz and trump and it is a draw . How does it happen . Cruz who has been saying all along he wants to see the Voters Decide this. At the end, Bernie Sanders was hit with tough questions about the comments in the 1980s about fidel castro. Hillary clinton was not talking about donald trump. She wasnt looking at the general election. They were racing to the left on immigration. Both promising to end deportations generally. Going to the left of president obama on that issue. They both brought attacks from mid 2000s bills. This Senate Committee room fight that Chris Christie would have made fun of if it happened in a Republican Debate. Whats good for Hillary Clinton out of that, this was the last debate. It comes after michigan and no real game changer for Bernie Sanders. Whats good for sanders is he had a chance to drive home his economic message. He put Hillary Clinton on defense on wall street, on trade issues like that which are working well for him heading into ohio and illinois and missouri. The economic message is resonating especially among young people. People who agree with him that the system is rigged against them. People who like this idea of Free Health Care and free college education. They are looking at families and Family Income hasnt changed since 1995. They have to pay more to go to college. Hillary clinton came out with this moment where she said look some things are too good to be true. What he is selling you is too good to be true. Listen. Senator sanders has talked about free college for everybody. Hes talked about universal Single Payer Health care for everybody. And yet when you ask questions as many of us have and more importantly independent experts, it is very hard to get answers. You know, my dad used to say, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We deserve answers about how these programs would actually work and how they would be paid for. Assuming Bernie Sanders could do everything he wanted with a congress that was maleable. You are talking about the largest peace time tax increase in history. Did she dent his message last night . I think by invoking her dad, by the way, john pointed out, was a republican, that was the way of personalizing what Hillary Clinton has been trying to say for months. A lot of the stuff that Bernie Sanders is talking about is not practical. That is a tough sell with the liberal base. It is tough to tell the left wing of the party that its hopes and aspirations and dreams are not practical. Hillary clinton is trying to find a way to go after Bernie Sanders without alienating his base and alienating young people who she will need to turn out en mass in november if she wins the nomination. It is a tough dance for clinton. She did not attack as much on that point last night. You just heard her invoking her dad in the one moment. She is trying to find a way to connect. She is consistently asked why arent you more likeable . Last night she gave a heck of an answer. I am not a natural politician, in case you havent noticed, like my husband or president obama. Absolutely. Hillary clinton faces this authenticity problem and that was a way of really confronting it in a personal way.
