The New York Daily News moved away from the raucous protest and went with Michelle Obama. The Clinton Campaign fully plan to fully deploy the first lady as a surrogate proving her worth last night. There were not just big speakers last night, but a pair of big names tonight. Michael bloomberg and the independent has decided to endorse clinton, but speak at the convention. Then bill clinton. You have seen it several times now. It is like new every single time. I cant get over the fact she did such a good job. Its not just because she is the current first lady and knows that experience. It is not because she is this beautiful, strong, africanamerican lawyer. It is also because think about the bridge they had to build in the 2008 election. This is someone who is now Hillary Clintons most compelling surrogates. They had a bitter battle for what they were putting together today. The ticket of unity. She was the perfect messenger. More compelling than Bernie Sanders. John phillips, we had a bit of this in the republican convention. No one can say anything bad about ivanka trump. Likewise, i just watched you watching the clip of Michelle Obama. I can tell you were impressed by the political impact. She is one of the most Popular Figures in the Democratic Party, but american polit politics. She took the personal and political and bake it into the cake and make it seem natural. That is something that Hillary Clinton has a hard time doing. The one time i can think of where she did that was in New Hampshire when she started tearing up when she ran back in 2008. The public sees her as an operator. The public sees her as democrats nixon or house of cards operator. If she wants people to trust her, she has to find a way to do what Michelle Obama did last night. It is smart of the Clinton Campaign and Michelle Obama to focus on the Historic Context of Hillary Clinton potentially becoming the first woman of the United States. It draws a contrast. I know the clinton people think this way. Make America Great again. In other words, looking backw d backwards. They want to portray as looking forward. That is an opportunity for them. She said the america i live in is great. You heard Elizabeth Warren say america is rich. You need to address income inequality. I want to play another sound bite from Michelle Obama. You have two attacks against Hillary Clinton. One from the trump people who call her crooked hillary and one from the Bernie Sanders people who are angry with what they see as machinations by the dnc. Listen to the trust issue. I trust hillary to lead this country because i have seen her life long devotion to the nations children. Not just her own daughter who she has raised to perfection, but every child who needs a champion. Kids who take the long way to school to avoid the gangs. Kids who wonder how they will ever afford college. Kids whose parents dont speak a word of english, but dream of a better life. Kids who turn to us to determine who and what they can be. You could hear him all of the country. That is not fair, john. He was quoting the Founding Fathers so much, i thought we were at the tea party. I appreciated that. I think the other thing that is interesting, we can say donald trump was hit hard at this convention. We have to draw a contrast. What i mean by that is we should say love trumps hate. She doesnt want to abolish the second amendment. These are pointing out facts and using his words. They are calling donald trump a racist. I think he has demonstrated he will pander to racist. The speakers did not go at donald trump, but the videos did they played if between with Donald Trumps words and mocking the disabled reporters. The speakers did not want to do that, but they want donald trump in his own words doing that. That is something i expect to play out. Do you think the viewers at home get that distention . No, but all of these things are testing it. You want to see what works. We know now Donald Trumps mocking of the disabled reporter works. They had the little girl come out with the disease. They will keep going there. Frankly, i was surprised to see how hard the democrats went on illegal immigration. I can predict what radio will talk about. They had Illegal Immigrants on the stage. They are overplaying their hand. The only reason why he is a dominant candidate is because he went hard on Illegal Immigrants. Hillary clinton is saying we wont break up families. We wont deport anybody. Donald trump is saying ill deport everybody. There is no middle ground. It will be very interesting with the election. I think Hillary Clinton staked out too extreme of a position. Elizabeth warren is doubling down. She said when you look at the donald trump position. That is a position of fear and hate. You want to beat that spectrum. Listen to what Elizabeth Warren said. Heres the really ugly underside to his pitch. Trump thinks he can win votes by fanning the flames of fear and hatred. By turning neighbor against neighbor. By persuading you in america is your fellow americans. People who dont look like you or dont talk like you or dont worship like you. He picked a Vice President famous for trying to make it legal to openly discriminate against gays and lesbians. Thats Donald Trumps america. Theyre trying to show the democratic vision of america and the donald Trump America in very dark tones. It is based on the numbers. When you look at the numbers for donald trump and minorities and swing states and the southwest, the numbers are clear. Hes doing terrible with minorities and hispanicamericans and africanamericans. He says the hispanics love me. That was in the republican primary. Theyre leaning on their advantage here. Opening the field. Donald trump just widened his gap in a big way which is a big concern, bob beckel . These postconvention surveys are not worth looking at. With all do respect, cnn paid for it. Paid for me, too. And for me. Lets remember that 17 of the electorate will be hispanic. 30 will be of color. When Ronald Reagan won in 1980, he took 53 of the white vote and won take landslide. If donald trump is going to win and he has the negatives he has among people of color and they held up and he will, he has to win almost 80 of the white vote which is why i listen to people say trumps got a shot. Ill go out on a limb. He doesnt have close to a shot. Hillary clinton could beat him from the maximum security jail. All right. We will leave it there. That is something to think about. You want to talk about how they are working together behind the scenes. They have been working the same office together on a whip operation to control and make sure that doesnt get away from them during the course of the day. I remember feeling like it was almost stolen when donald trump and ben carson were saying, they can put her on the 2 bill because literally it felt like being cheapened. This moment to me is just major because i think about it every time. The pressure i experienced walk f ing in to take the bar exam. Don talked about it on this show early early. Not this show, but his show earlier. The pressure and pride he feels going into the building every day. I think it is so important for all of americans to hear that perspective. We dont all share the same journey. It was the big strategic reason for the speech, bob beckel. There was a tactic thing that she did. She said i trust Hillary Clinton to dot, dot, dot. Trust and Hillary Clinton have not gone handinhand. Those are some of the worst numbers we have seen in a candidate. If it was about trust, this race will be over right now. Her numbers with only get better. She has spent 25 years in the public light. She has been on the defensive all the time. After a while, you will get to the point where you will be defensive yourself and people will be out there saying, maybe there must be something there. I cant think of a single thing. The email issue where she deserved to get the heat she did. I think this is why it comes back to what happens on thursday night. It is so important. As we rise to that standard. It is effective because you have the speakers making the argument. Follow your head. Elizabeth warren and Bernie Sanders. This is smart and in your interest. You have Michelle Obama saying follow your heart. This meets the aspiration of women and minorities. You will see more of that tonight. When bill clinton takes the stage, his job is to humanize Hillary Clinton. Who she was when she was a lawyer and when they first met. That is the story americans have not heard. The clinton thing, bill clinton, however, to young voters, they dont relate to him. Especially democratic voters. He may have to reintroduce himself to him. There is the defense of the 1990s and globalization. How will bill clinton play to this crowd when is so much of what were talking about here, trade and globalization and middle class left behind. Some people blame that on the bill clinton years. He will not litigate the battle of the 1990s. Hillary clinton will yank him off the stage if he goes there. This is not dissimilar to the 1992 convention. Bill clinton and al gore saying were going to take the party that lost three consecutive president ial elections and m moderateme it. We will stay within budgets and put criminals in jail. This party moved far to the left. What we saw is almost a Bernie Sanders rally. Do you think the big dogs will bring the big game with bill clinton . Bill clinton has given big Convention Speeches. Notably four years ago. Some say he lost a step this year. I think he will be more disciplined on the convention stage. I think he forgets in the rallies. You cant really say that. When he is on the convention stage, he is in his element. This is what bill clinton does best. He will be prepared. He knows what he wants to do. The importance here. He may get booed too. The people going to the polls who are 18 years old this time were not born for six years after bill clinton became president. Theres millions of people who didnt live the clinton era. Certain parts for good and certain for not. Certainly as a presidency, he was a golden gem to have on the trail. I think he has been overtaken somewhat now. Hes going to have to reintroduce himself to people who dont know him. It will be interesting to see how Bernie Sanders supporters accept him. 45 minutes past the hour. This is something they are working on every day all day. They joined the whip teams together and tell their people to keep people in check. At the same time, they are sending bernie surrogates to back off and get on board. They canceled two delegate workshops today because they did not know what was going to happen. They dont want more bad press where people are screaming never hillary at sanders. This is a big step in the moment of projecting unity. The message is clear. Preserve unity for now. We will have the bernie movement, we will have it after november with a hillary presidency. Some are buying it and some are not. I am struck of the young supporters of Bernie Sanders. The young vibrant supporters of sanders and you will have bill clinton take the stage. You made the great point. You have all of these millennials born after bill clinton was long after the white house. It is interesting for people with bill clinton. Gen x and older politics. If there is one thing, the lack of millennial speakers. There are 89 million millennials. They do not align like their parents did or i did with their parents political party. They will vote and maybe not in bigger numbers as barack obama, but they will vote. I havent seen any kid relate to them. I would be surprised. Somebody would have to explain to me why they dont have more millennials. Does Chelsea Clinton count . Well. On the border. Some suggest she has i think one thing as the speakers line up. Three prominent democrat speakers. They are intent on taking back the senate. If you watch Elizabeth Warren, she was trying to put Mitch Mcconnell in the box of donald trump. I see those three forcing votes and trying to make that an issue to win those seats back and take back the senate. I didnt put it together until i saw the three of them on stage tonight. Somebodys putting that together. It is interesting debate within the Democratic Party how to treat donald trump. Some people say by putting him in the same group as republican senators, you arenormalizing him. Or the other issue is he is a threat and different type of candidate. I think there is another theory. That is the Republican Party created donald trump. There are a series of things have happened over time where harry reid called him the Republican Partys frankenstein. If you say this is a recurring issue and out of control, you cant just start at the top. You have to go down ballot. That is an effective dnc argument. It worked well here. At this point last week, donald trump and the Republican Party are now one and the same. That wasnt the case for the primaries. Republicans have come a long way into accepting donald trump as their standard bearer. For the purposes of the campaign and voters, it is the message. It is too complicated. They are all the same. That will be true until november. After that, we will leave him like scalded dogs. We have to leave it there. Thank you so much. Central to the democratic platform. Hillary clinton understands that if someone in this country works 40 hours a week, that person should not be living in poverty. The democratic platform calling for an increase to the federal minimum wage. For a 40 hour workweek that is 15,000 a year. An increase to 15 a year, would bost to 31,200. Here is a poverty line. 11. 68 an hour. At the current rate, families making minimum wage need two incomes to stay out of poverty. You will continue to hear more about this as the week goes on.
