This is just unprecedented, i mean, no president had ever campaigned saying if you elect me, you are going to get my wife also. You know, that was not anything American People were ready for. Hillary Rodham Clinton is running for president , actually, she is running for her husband to be the president. Elect him and you get me. What does this mean. Who is she . What will she represent . We have a president who wants to bring us together and heal the divisions between races. You could not watch the campaign without knowing that she was most important to him. Hillary was a lightning rad for criticism. When people understand this story of this slice of history she will be given the credit she is due. The American People have voted to make a new beginning. [ cheers and applause ] i want to begin this night by thanking my wife without whom i would not be here tonight. And who i believe will be one of the greatest first ladies in the history of this republic. The clintons they are the vanguard of the baby boomers coming in to politics. It felt like a whole new generation coming in to power. The music was different. Everything seemed different. This is the first president whos wife, the first lady of the United States has her own independent professional career. Over the next eight years hillary would rewrite the rules for an entire generation of women. What i represent is generational change. What i like about all the women who have been in the white house, they have all tried to do what is best for themselves, for their country as they defined it. And thats what i would try to do. Hillary was not going to be a traditional first lady. The Womens Movement had changed it forever. Does hillary look great tonight or what . Hillary was the first generation that was going to start that change. She was ambitious about a set of policies that were really going to start to benefit people who were on the margins of society. It was the sense that together, we could really have positive impact. And she imbued in all of us that sense of purpose. Hillarys political journey started in a surprisingly different place. Hillary was raised in a middle class methodist family outside chicago. Her father hugh rodham was a enormous influence. He was a drill master. He saw life as combat. He taught her that the emotion is weakness. You cant ever show emotion. At one point she said she came home with a report card that was covered in as, and her fathers reaction was you must go to an easy school. Hugh rodham was a diehard republican and encouraged his daughter to campaign for republican candidates like berry goldwater. Her father was furious when she went off to the east coast to one of the finest womens schools in the country. Wellesley was a liberal all Girls College in massachusetts, hillary majored in Political Science and was president of the young republicans in her freshman year. As a child of the 60s the events in the country started to influence her politics. Its a fascinating turn that she took at wellesley. She sort of found her own voice. Started to see the vietnam war differently. Talk about womens rights. She then became an outspoken democrat. Shed do rallies on the steps of the college and bring other women along to get in to politics. In hillarys final year, her peers picked her to be the First Student ever to speak on their behalf at commencement. What happened that day was the sentinel moment of her career. She had a feminist idea that you did not have to take your husbands name. This was unthinkable to the establishment of arkansas. I did not try to upset anybody. I thought i was doing it for the right reason. So im thinking of changing my name to i dont know, Martha Washington or something. To win over the people of arkansas, hillary decides she needs to radically change her image. It was so excruciating. Critics say had her once dazzling image is now tarnished. It was an attempt to mischaracterize her. To skew her motivations in the most unflattering light. Someone that was a real women but flesh and blood, came out as a character that many people now days continue to believe is the real hillary. So you had lying hillary. She was demonized over and over again. Republicans continue a multifront attack on Hillary Clinton. You are you are you are doing a bad and dangerous thing to do, to say that the first lady of the land is a liar. Im not. I sometimes dont know what i have been accused of from daytoday. So its not surprising to me that people would take a look at the flurry of accusations and say, oh, my gosh, there must be something wrong. One day, we were riding together and she was reading the newspapers, and she said, you know, if i were reading this, and i saw this, read this discussion of this person, i would not like her either. Butthats not me. I look very closely at the verse scandals. I concluded that the scandals were phony. She was someone of high integrity. But in the right wing, you could not say that Hillary Clinton was a good person. That accelerated my departure from the right. With all the scandals eroding the Publics Trust in the clintons. Skepticism of the Health Care Plan escalates. Protests were being planned, she was being heckled when she went out and did health care events. The great challenge of this conference is to give voice to women everywhere whos experiences go unnoticed, whos words go unheard. You could feel in that room almost a stillness. Even now, in the late 20th century. There was no reaction in the audience. We suddenly looked at each other and were in a panic. Maybe we have completely miscalculated this. It is time for us to say here in beijing, and for the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss womens rights as separate from human rights. Hillary would meet women thinking they had heard that speech. Women in south america, asia, africa. It was like she was a rockstar. People lined the streets for her. It was such a disconnect from what was happening in the United States. Back at home, trouble lies ahead. But this time, the scandal will be far more personal. A year in to bill clintons final term, a scandal explodes. Theres charges that president clinton had an affair with the white house intern. We will told that i got a call from one of my editors saying can you check it out . At issue, whether mr. Clinton had a sexual relationship with a former white house intern, Monica Lewinsky. And i thought its ridiculous. The president of the United States having an affair with the intern. That is not happening. Lewinsky has told a friend she had a sexual relationship with the president. Hillary clinton does not want to believe it happened. She said in private comments to her friends, you know, this young woman at the white house was sort of pursuing him. We can assume that is because thats the story bill clinton was telling her. I want you to listen to me. Im going to say this again. I did not have sexual relations with that woman. She was the one who said these accusations are not true, i love my husband. I believe him. We are going to fight this, you know. Seven days later, hillary breaks her silence with a interview on national television. I cant say i knew what she was going to say. She kept her council to herself. Ms. Clinton, good morning. The old impulse that its all about their enemies coming after them. And she utters the phrase that will stick to her forever. She claims a conspiracy, rather than claiming the obvious, that her husband has done something wrong here. He the relationship with monica so i thought there was credibility to what she was saying. But at the time, it was received as delusional. Clinton is returning to a familiar theme as she had defends her husband. They are out attacking and imagining some conspiracy. Theres no such thing seven months after hillarys support of her husband. To me, there was a direct line from everything you had heard from 10, 20, 30 years, years and years of right wing attack. Lets get to the controversy. Now surrounding Hillary Clinton and her emails. There was a total double standard. The negative coverage of hillary was off the charts. And thats the image that trump picked up. Crooked hillary. Crooked hillary, folks. They got away with perpetrating this false image of hillary. Breaking news, the fbis assessment that there should be no charges. The most experienced, the most qualified person to ever run for the presidency, who happened to be a woman, ran against the least qualified, the least experienced person ever to run for the presidency, who happened to be a man. Donald trump wins the presidency. And the man won. If that isnt blatant sexism in this country, i dont know what else is. Its a shocking defeat. More americans vote for Hillary Clinton than any other losing president ial candidate in history. She is one of the most important women in our nations history. She helped move the ball forward in unbelievable ways against incredible odds. I know we have still not shattered that highest and hardest glass ceiling, but someday someone will and hopefully sooner than we might think right now. Hillary clinton planted the seeds for that. She just was, as always, 10 or 15 years ahead of her time. Hillary was a trailblazer. She blew up the idea of what a first lady is supposed to be. The impact that shes made goes beyond what a president could have done. And to all the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams.
