The president s son met with house investigators yesterday to answer questions for several hours, and he told lawmakers that the father son conversation happened after trump jr. Issued a misleading statement about the trump tower meeting and released emails showing what the meeting was really about. Trump told investigators he spoke to hope hicks, one of the president s closest aides as they straplabled to make a statement for the media. We know the trump tower meeting and the white house response are now under scrutiny by special counsel Robert Mueller. Neither trump jr. Nor the president is a lawyer, but trump junior said lawyers were president by the conversation, so its covered by Attorney Client privilege. It appears so long as republican lawmakers allow the privilege claim the president s son wont have to provide anymore details about the conversations to congress. Alisyn. Thank you. More news now, embattled senator al franken making an announcement on the floor, and there are calls for him to resign amid the allegations of misconduct. Do we know what he is going to say . Reporter its widely expected that he will announce a resignation, but we want to be careful about that because his spokesman via twitter is pushing back a minnesota radio report that he would step down. That spokesman saying that he was discussing these things with his family, but its widely expected that is what he will do, and this comes amid an extraordinary day yesterday that happened, a sixth female came forward saying he inappropriately touched her, and this has conyers resigned, and it was gillibrand from new york saying enough is enough. Theres growing frustration about parsing what was acceptable and what was not acceptable and it was a campaign, if you will, via twitter and statements, and many Democratic Senators and colleagues came forward within 30 minutes or so all essentially saying the same thing, and more than 30 of frankens colleagues and very good friends saying he would not be able to survive this. Obviously there are new allegations today, and enough is enough. You need to draw a line in the stand and say none of it is okay or acceptable and we as elected leaders should be held to a higher standard and not a lower standard. I do not feel he should continue to serve. As recently, three weeks ago he came back to the senate, franken, and apologized after the first allegation of groping and of forcible kissing, that type of thing. He said he was ashamed and embarrassed and the senatet Ethics Committee would be investigating this, and Chuck Schumer took him aside yesterday and spoke to him several times yesterday and said he did not think he would survive this, if he thinks he will decide and step down, it would be the democratic governor appointing his replacement and then a special election would happen in november of 2018 and we expect that senate race would be a competitive one. Appreciate it. Lets bring in our cnn political analyst. With some exceptions people will look at the claim and say Attorney Client privilege and say it doesnt fit and if they want to give him a break, we should do that. And thats what they are doing. I dont think there was anything else here, and so many hours of questioning, and so we said, okay, go back and check, and he seems to want to be forthcoming. Where is the confidence in the witness credibility given the misstatements in the past . Yeah, he has plenty of recall of about what led up to the meetings and nothing resulted from the meetings, he has that level of recall but not the scent discussions about how to deal with it as it exploded as a story. There are reports his father as president is dictating a statement from air force one that has special prosecutors interest and attention. I think with the president s son here, you are seeing the limits of the congressional probe, but perhaps just wetting the appetite for the special prosecutor who may look at this invoking of Attorney Client privilege on such a thin ground as such a reason to look more at don jr. And bring him into the grand jury and so on. David just hit on the problem. If these congressional probes cant make any headway, and you hear their frustration, and congresswoman Jackie Speier yesterday said she thought he was suffering from amnesia, and Chuck Grassley is moving at a snails pace, so if they are sometimeied, all there is is Robert Muellers investigation. Robert muellers investigation is operating on a different plain. Theres a schism on the judicial committees work. Now they are saying thank you so much for your time, and democrats are saying you cant pull this Attorney Client privilege thing, and we have questions and you are not being forthcoming with your answers, and thats a risk and will always happen on capitol hill because there are a few things that can escape the partisanism surrounding the issue with the ties to kremlin officials and what other members of the team had contact with the russian officials. It puts them at a greater disadvantage, probes that will not have as much ability to look at what mueller could, and mueller is making plea arrangements. I think we should add, though, the argument from the white house, from the president supporters is all these investigations are moving at a fevered pitch. I think its important to underline what we dont know. Theres a big question of why. Why were there contacts . Why was there an attempt to cozy up to the russians . What we are looking at and able to report on as fact and analyze is still am set of circumstances that will raise questions and theres not evidence that they were working beforehand or during the election to somehow tilt the election. Its worth nodding to the whole point of an obstruction investigation is the president s team bring this on themselves by their behavior. We are seeing politics being used to tar the mueller investigation. The fbi agent sending texts to antitrump, and Robert Mueller who people all the way up to Newt Gingrich is impeccable and the media should calm down and now they are saying he is compromised and has a con tphrebconflict . Now some could say the sanctions are going to be gone as soon as the new administration comes forward . Why were they coordinating . Potentially. Again, this is not a completed investigation but certainly the topic of sanctions have come up with flynns contacts with the russians. When you talk about the subject was adoptions, adoptions for the russians means sanctions because its because of what we did that a different act. The response from the republican leader of the committee, tray gowdy was, i am not interfering with muellers probe, and we cant do criminal prosecutions in congress so im not touching it and i already told you that, congressman. They are having a spat in public that they were having behind closed doors as well. And this revelation goes to filling out the narrative or trying to answer some of the questions, and as david pointed out, at this point its an ongoing investigation, and still patterns developing and not a full conclusion and it seems like we will have to wait for the various stages of muellers probe and these plea deals he puts out and the potential charges to fully see the picture they are seeing. Its interesting, with flynn, you look at the facts and say this is somebody who is potentially so corrupt in his dealings with the russians, and hes going to be cooperating, or is this more benign, trumps version of a reset with russia, again, thats why the mystery around flynn is so significant. Lets talk about al franken. Hes going to make some sort of announcement and many believe hes going to heed the calls from his democratic colleagues and he will resign. You can see in stark relief the difference between how democrats have been dealing with john conyers and al franken, and how republicans are wrestling with what to do with roy moore and the accusations against donald trump, and blake all of that, theres a distinction. Last night, laura ingram appeared to be siding with al franken, but its just against with what they found as a newfound morality. Listen. These are people that grew up in a party that used to preach free love, and used to think all of hippy freedom was one kerrful, and now they suddenly curled into this weird i just want everybody watching to understand that Newt Gingrich is here tonight and hes standing up for al franken. Sort of. I mean, hes calling it weird pure teuzam. Its strange to hear there are so many characters like tphaoNewt Gingrich that have their own history. I think thats a very important thing, and democrats needing to have able to have a reason to point a finger at roy moore and not have the finger pointed directly back at them at senator franken. It does help them politically to be able to do this now. Does this continue with other people whose names come up . Does it a zero Tolerance Party in the Democratic Party or not . Thats what we will tell how much this is political posturing or a sincere shift . Its interesting the democrats have been attacking trump for attacking Democratic Institutions and now getting rid of franken without due process, or they are trying to. Its not a question of us allowing him to invoke the privilege, and he invoked the privilege and we made it clear that we did not think it was a recognizable privilege. He, then, and his counsel said they would go back and discuss it further with their lawyers and the president s lawyers and get back to us. The question comes if they get back to us and say we are not going to answer those questions, then we will be required to subpoena donald trump, jr. , back before the committee. Unfortunately i think the committee set a precedent that if witnesses make any flimsy claim of privilege that the house or the senate will back away. We have seen, for example, attorney general, not in the house but in the senate, too, make an assertion they were not going to answer questions not because they were invoking the privilege, but because they thought the president might invoke the privilege. Theres no such thing. As long as the senate and house fail to act and insist, then we create the opportunity to evade oversight and i think its dangerous in our investigation and its dangerous in terms of the entire precedent. Then you have what else went on, according to sources in the q a yesterday, him saying he doesnt remember things. How much clarity do you think you got . I dont want to characterize the testimony in that way. What i tried to do is basically not go into the content of what people have said, but rather when they refuse to answer questions not let them behind the closed nature of the proceeding and then go public and say we fully cooperated when they havent. I will leave that for others when we publish the transcript and i hope at the conclusion we will publish all the transcripts so the American People can see what they had to say and whether it supports the conclusions we reached. Did you learn more about why donald trump, jr. , provided reckonings about the meeting, and if the president of the us knew about the meeting, and what happened in that meeting in furtherance of what was cooperation after the meeting . We know more than what we did go into the hearing, and we did gather additional facts, and what we learned early is not necessarily that a witness says i did it, and did you conclude with the russians, and you get a straight answer if you ask the summary questions, but if you ask the specific questions, it leads you to other documents or witnesses and you can prove or disprove what the witnesses have said. I think we gained important insights that we can followup if we have the support of the majority find out, was this witness telling us the truth, and if not does it lead us to other evidence that will shed more light on the facts. I think it was very productive. Chris stewart says he doesnt think there was anything there, and there was a long questioning period, and don jr. Gave as much as he thought he could give, and based on what he knows and the facts of the situation, theres nothing to followup on in terms of collusion. I think he expressed that opinion from the beginning, and if you look at what has been produced in the public eye theres a lot of evidence filling in the puzzle. You have George Papadopoulos admitting the russians informed him and the campaign that they had the stolen Hillary Clinton emails. Now this was at such a early date that not even the Clinton Campaign knew the russians had the emails and then weeks later you have don jr. And others taking meetings with the russian government and promising dirt on Hillary Clinton, and dirt in which the campaign was on notice they really had, and the dirt they had they express great disappointment and want more, and within days Julian Assange releases the emails. Thats a pretty damning set of circumstances. Was it commuby publishing them independently, thats how they were making good on the offer of help. We are still looking at that particular issue. Theres a lot in the public domain. You have to be looking away to say theres no evidence of collusion here, and you have to, i think, accept the face value the selfserving statements of the administration, and thats just not what we do. I smell what you are cooking, but you will need more ingredients to make soup. The fires burning in your state are no joke. There was 0 containment for a long time, and we are showing pictures now of the situation there. How urgent is it . How worried are you its going to spread to even more populated communities . Its very urgent. With the winds theres no containing a fire as long as the winds persists. I am deeply concerned about it and have been talking to my constituents, and hundreds of thousands have been evacuated from their homes and they, as you can imagine, are watching very nervously to find out whether their entire world ends up in flames. This is what arab leaders warned could happen if there was protests or if there was a move of the embassy to jerusalem and jerusalem was called the capital of israel. This is pretty much what we are seeing going into the evening here, this continuous violence. We need to point out that today is thursday. Friday is a typical day for protests. My thought is the president s action was unwise, and tomorrow is an important day because typically, friday is a day of protests, and these are the ones you are seeing on the screen are internal to the palestinian territories. We have been cautioned that friday could be more active. Do you blame donald trump for this . Theres a lot of violence in the area. I think his action has led to this, but i dont believe the response is the proper one, although i dont agree with his decision. Look, very few people understand the quick sawedic nature as attempting middle east peace as you do. And some said there could be no peace without this move, and they want jerusalem to be the capital where the embassy is, and the mayor of jerusalem felt it was an important First Step Towards peace. How do you see this . I respectfully but very strongly disagree with the view. Jerusalem is israels capital and its going to be israels capital, and theres no doubt about that. Why not recognize it . How do you get two parties to negotiate and reach an agreement, and this decision, premature and unnecessary, makes it less likely that there will be negotiations and less likely that there will be an agreement . Was it likely before this . Well, it has not been achieved. People say, well, so we should stop trying because it hasnt been achieved . The twostate saw lousolution i only feasible solution to the conflict, and the only way that could be achieved is direct negotiations between the p parties. The problem with this decision is it makes it less likely and more difficult to get into negotiations and to reach an agreement. The other thing that it does lets be clear support for the twostate saw lousolution i declining among israel and the palestinians. In israel the body of government is opposed to there ever being a palestinian state on the west bank or a palestinian capital in jerusalem. They will be emboldened by this. On the palestinian side hamas insists on the use of violence, and this will embolden them to continue their violence against israel. The real question is not whether jerusalem will be the capital of israel. Ambassador, dennis ross, was a point person for the middle east during clinton and bush 41, and he said to wolf blitzer said that now israel owes us something, and doing this is what israel wanted and netanyahu, and it helps it because they owe the process. What do you think of that prospect . I hope hes right, but only time will tell. Many experts in this country, who i read about last night, is that the United States making this action without asking anything of israel has simply emboldened the israelis to continue not to make concessions because they know they will get what they want without doing anything. You can argue it both ways. I hope it works out that it will lead to israeli concessions and palestinian concessions. Look, lets be clear, both sides have to negotiate in a reasonable response, which means recognition of some of the other sides interests, otherwise you cant get to an agreement. While i have you, lets talk about what is happening in Congress Today. It appears senator al franken may resign today amid calls for his democratic colleagues to do this amid Sexual Harassment allegations. You miss being in the senate . Not too much. What do you think from this side as you watch things unfold . What i miss is getting around in my home state of maine, and meeting with my constituents. I dont miss what is going on in washington. Do you think there is more gridlock today than when you were there . Definitely. I had a great relationship with bob dole, the republican leader. We disagreed often and when we couldnt reach an agreement we let the senate decide it, and in our arguments we stuck to the issues and didnt make it personal. Christopher wray is not going to be able to answer anything regarding the investigation into russia, and thats why they have the special counsel. We have seen the fbi become politicized at this point and the likes of President Trump and his allies are trying to use every little bit they can to try and discredit the fbi because by doing so they are discrediting the special counsel Robert Mueller and in turn discrediting or trying to discredit what his findings are for the russia investigation.
