The main concern, a very busy travel day, that we are likely going to see a repeat, at least possibly going to see a prepete of scenes that took place at airports across the country, people crowding, not able to practice social distancing. As you mentioned a while ago, the cdc warned people against holiday travel. Now those know who defied that advice from federal officials are probably going to have to go home today. With the thanksgiving week drawing an to an end, experts are warning the covid19 pandemic will likely get much worse in the coming weeks before a possible vaccine begins to offer some relief. U. S. Covid hospitalizations hit an alltime record on saturday. More than 91,000 americans are currently hospitalized with covid19, according to the covid tracking project. Saturday is the second time there have been over 90,000 americans hospitalized with covid. Thursday was the first. We are continuing to see a high number of daily new cases, and an alarming increase in the number of people currently hospitalized with covid19. This is and remains a serious cause for concern. Acided over 100,000 new covid19 cases marking the 26th consecutive day the u. S. Has topped the benchmark according to data from Johns Hopkins university. The u. S. Has surpassed 13 million coronavirus cases. Four million new cases came in the month of november alone. The cdc projecting up to 321,000 covid deaths by december 19th. Now the good news the faa has announced the first mass air shipment of covid19 vaccine. And cdc advisers will be voting on december 1st on who gets the vaccine first. Most likely Health Care Workers and highrisk populations will get priority to receive a vaccine when one is approved and available, says dr. Esther chu, professor of emergency american at Oregon Health and science university. As far as when children will get the vaccine thats kind of a phasethree thing most likely because children for the most part have been doing well in this pandemic. They are on the list, but were going to try to focus on older folks and those with multiple comorbidities first. Reporter last night we learned that the latest governor was positive. Theyve tested positive for covid19, the office went on to say that both are feeling well, they are isolated and at this point are asymptomatic. Thats certainly underscoring the reality here that the virus has spread significantly. Recently the governors of states like nevada, virginia, missouri, have also tested positive. I want to talk about this vaccine that we need to get in two doses. We need to remember. There are some things we need to think about in terms of getting this. First of all, theres a need keep track of people who get the first dose and being reminded they need the second dose. Theres concern that the first dose may make people sick enough that they wouldnt go back and get the second dose. And then theres also the question of if i get my first dose, say, at cvs, and i get my second dose at walmart, is there going to be documentation of that . What do we know about any sort of tracking system or universal system that is going to help document and track people who do get their doses or those who need it . Yeah. Good morning, really exciting to know that for the First Time Ever the world might actually have the first Coronavirus Vaccine ever. Thats huge. Secondly, everything you mention read really, really good questions that need to be answered. Now im in the primary care field, and we vaccinate 95 of patients, both adults and kids, with hepatitis vaccines which, by the way, hepatitis b are three shots, hepatitis a is two shots. So in our field, were used to multiple shots, and we do have a centralized system in georgia which is very effective. When a child comes in, we can look and see if theyve had the measles, mumps, or roubella shots. If they get a shot in another state that might be difficult. The butty about rolling out the vaccine will be hopefully the time that the biden team will have to implement a centralized system where we can track who gets the shot. And listen, the responsibility should also fall on the patient or the person getting the vaccine. I want to get out of this pandemic. If i get a shot at walgreens, im going to try to make sure that i go back to walgreens a month later. And if any country can pull this off, i really think that we can here in the u. S. Good to know. I love to hear that optimism. We hope that is the case. Lets talk about whats happening in rhode island now. Theyre starting as of tomorrow to shut down certain aspects of the state in terms of bars, gyms, movie theaters, and bowling alleys, but theyre keeping schools open. Now were talking to a psychologist in the next hour about the mental stress and emotional stress that children are feeling from Virtual School and not being able to go back to school. Is it necessary in your mind to keep those schools open for the safety and that the Mental Health of our children and how do you balance that now . When they go to school and the interaction with their peers. It is absolutely key that our kids stay in school. But lets think about where we are right now in the pandemic. And when that happens, its easy to keep a school to open a school, but is it going to be able to keep are we going to be able to keep the school open. Thats the milliondollar question. Kids definitely dont seem to be affected with covid like adults do. But remember, they can transmit the virus to adults. If they live with extended family with parents or older people, they can transmitthe virus. And also a lot of kids are asymptomatic. Were not necessarily testing kids. So i think that the answers a little bit more complicated. To make it simple, youve got to think about the community spread, and youve got to think about what happens in these buildings, prolonged contact and proximity. Schools overall have done a good job. But i still think that we are not really counting the number of kids that are getting sick. And perhaps affecting teachers, bus drivers, and our school nurses. I want to get back to the vaccine before i let you go. There have been some questions about we know studies and polls have shown us that almost half hour of the people in america have questions and hesitations about taking the vaccine. There are weve also had some people on our air in the Health Community saying they know Health Care Professionals who also have trepidations about that. With that said, dr. Jonathan reiner talked about the idea of paying people to get the vaccine. Lets listen to what he said i think its a fabulous idea. We need vaccinate 70 of the population. So if you look at our experience trying to get people to wear masks we tried altruism, you know, protects your neighbors, that didnt work. More recently we tried to get people to try to protect themselves. That doesnt seem to work. Maybe money works. Im all about paying people to do the right thing. So sure, so many people in this country are hurting financially. They need stimulus. They need some stimulus money. Get vaccinated, send the government your receipt, and get paid. Im okay with that. Lets do that. Do you agree with that . What is the reality behind that . You know, i actually agree with dr. Reiner. Call it an incentive or a bribe. Lets think about the most highrisk group here obviously the vulnerable population will be the elderly and people in nursing homes. Theyve bout into the vaccine ive been taking an informal poll. The elderly, the question is when can i get it. When it comes to the young crowd, between 18 and 35, a lot of my patients are saying im. Going to get it. Its just going to be a cold for me. Why would i get the vaccine . Providing an incentive, again, whether you call it a bribe or incentive, i think that that will work. And because this virus is so infectious, we have to make sure that at least 80 of the population get the vaccine, otherswise were not going to get out of this pandemic. I think its a good idea. The president saying that highs case in wisconsin is based on illegal votes, despite the recount that he paid 3 million for, surfacing 132 more votes for jioe biden. The president saying the case in pennsylvania is based on fraud despite his personal attorney, rudy giuliani, saying in court that their case was not about fraud and two courts in that case now rejecting the trump case. The president himself has been kind of behind the scenes this weekend. Hes spending the past two nights at camp david. He was on his golf course. But beneath the surface, this administration is working very hard in these final weeks of the administration to sort of cement many of the decisions that the president worked on during his four years in office. Taken individually, they might not seem that big a deal, but taken together, what esmerjs this pictures of an emerges is this picture of an Administration Working hurdedly to try to cement the president s actions. In iraq and afghanistan, the president announcing troop withdrawals, essentially leaving biden a new dynamic in those war zones as he comes into office. Threatening new sanctions in china and iran. Were told that those are on the docket for the next several weeks. Essentially stymieing any attempts at diplomacy by the Biden Administration toward those countries. On the environment, the president opening up new drilling leases in alaska, rolling back protections for migratory birds. At the treasury department, pulling back funds that were meant for this Federal Reserve Lending Program that could provide relief to people during the coronavirus pandemic, making it difficult for the Biden Administration to restart that very quickly. At the justice department, pushing federal executions through before the end of the president s term. Five scheduled before hes set to leave office. Homeland security, cementing some of these immigration rules including making the citizenship test harder for people who are trying to become american citizens. Also rushing to complete the border wall, rolling back protection for federal workers, and pardons. Last week the president pardoned his former National Security adviser, michael flynn. Were told the lobbying has increased for more pardons in the remainder of the president s term. So all of this an indication that the president , his aides, his cabinet members all realize his administration is coming to an end, that he wont be president after january 20th. Kevin liptak. So youve got a piece in the post about how republicans are trying to cast joe biden as an elitist, and of course this is after President Trump who lived in a guilded penthouse in manhattan and flies from private golf club to private golf club and said this in 2018 sat one if we have it, guys. I meet these people. They call them the elite. These people. I look at them, i say, thats elite . [ boos ] weve got more money. Weve got more brains. Weve got better houses, apartments. Weve got nicer boats. Were smarter than they are. They say the elite were the eli elite. Youre the elite. Were the elite. Better houses, nicer boats. Who are republicans building how are republicans building this narrative about joe biden . Its a nakedly political strategy. Theyre trying to tag him with this brand of elitism in part because he selected highly qualified, highly educated cabinet selections, people who went to ivory League Schools and who have spent a lot of time working for the government, whitecollar jobs for much of their lives. They dont talk about President Trumps cabinet officials are ivory league educated and very wealthy and spent a lot of time in corporate america. But the idea is that really turnish bidens image. Biden has spent time talking about himself as middleclass joe, the kid from scranton, someone whos going to look out for working won americans. Thats why he won in places that President Trump won four years ago, in part because he was able to speak to the suburban voters but to the White Working Class voters that President Trump had won over four years ago. So a lot of these republicans who are looking at 2024, people like senator rubio, senator holly, senator tom cotton, theyre all trying to specifically brand biden as someone whos looking out for coastal professionals, whos appointing officials who will manage and maintain the status quo and not look out for americaing americans for working americans. Its difficult when they have been silent the past four years when theyve talked about President Trumps choices and his embrace of elitism. They are making the case and are trying to make sure that biden from the very beginning has to be constrained by the fact that he is being tagged with this brand of elitism and not looking out for american workers. So is the biden team dismissing this out of hand . Are they sensitive to the narrative at all . Yeah. Ive talked to a couple of folks on the biden transition. And they are very quick to point out the hypocrisy behind this. Theyre saying this is all about politics, that biden and Vice President elect Kamala Harris are the first joint team to come into the oval Office Without any ivy league degrees. Obviously Kamala Harris went to howard university, biden went to delaware. Went to school at the university of delaware. They are pointing out they have middleclass backgrounds, they have stories of their own that they can relate to middleclass americans and working class americans in ways that President Trump and his very wealthy cabinet might not able to do. They are pushing back hard against some accusations and pointing out its not a bad thing to have highly educated and qualified people in government saying that President Trump, yone of his mistakes, is pointing out people who dont have experience in leveraging government to things done. That i are pushing back hard, trying to make sure it doesnt set in before biden takes office. But they do recognize this. They do see this as a potential challenge. They do see that some of the people looking at running in to 24 are the people making this argument in 2024 are the people making this argument the most strongly and are trying to push back as quickly as they can. Well see as the days and weeks go on toward the inauguration how the cabinet will shape out. We also know that there are questions about the diversity of those nominees from the president elect.
