Now we are watching to see exactly where House Democrats are when it comes to the question of impeachment. So far only 51 House Democrats support moving forward with impeachment. Nancy pelosi, the speaker of the house, has held firm. She continued to argue they should continue to dive into their investigations. She said they are getting information, Winning Court cases to get the president s financial information. Meanwhile, others in leadership like jim clyburn argued that eventually impeachment may have to happen. Heres what he said on cnn yesterday. If we sufficiently, effectively educate the public then we will have done our jobs and we can move on an Impeachment Vote and it will stand. Reporter President Trump said before he left for the uk there was no basis for democrats to move forward with impeachment arguing there was no obstruction, no collusion, therefore dpemocrats are moving forward with a partisan exercise. A lot of democrats are trying to balance the 2020 reelections theyll face, some of them President Trump won in 2016 while others are trying to listen to the base that wants the Democratic Party to move forward with impeachment. Lets take a look at where we are. 41 of americans say they want to impeach and remove trump from office, up slightly from april of 2019 after the Mueller Report was released. Its down from 45 we saw in late 2018 on an average of two cnn polls. What we see consistently is, yes, the noes are over a majority. Most people dont want to impeach. Thats why you are seeing nancy pelosi try to keep it on the down low. Where is the shift coming from . The shift is coming from this column right here. Among democrats, 76 of democrats want to impeach and remove trump from office. Thats what you are seeing with clyburn. You saw it on the california state democratic convention. There is a lot of movement within the Democratic Base to impeach or remove the president but nancy pelosi is watching the number of independents. Only 35 of them want it. If this were to get to 50 and 85, some in leadership may get antsy. Right. What does history tell us . In the 70s for example. Nixon resigned august 9, 1974. 56 of americans, the vast majority said he should be impeached and removed from office. Thats where you see a lot of movement for impeachment. Whats fascinating is peoples opinions on impeachment can change. Absolutely. Not all democrats necessarily want to impeach or remove trump. They want to start an inquiry. Thats what happened february 6, 1974. Impeach or remove nixon from office, only 38 at that point of americans said they should do it. That looks like this number. In fact, its slightly above it. Just because you are starting an inquiry doesnt mean youll necessarily remove him from office. Thats what happened in 74 when we had 38 . It was over the process that opinions changed. Exactly right. What will the body language and beyond be here . He blows it off, ignores it. The state visit a state visit the queens primary role is to represent the United Kingdom. The uk now needs the u. S. It is not in a position to snub the u. S. , especially as it looks down the barrel at a post brexit world. It needs to think about trying to outline a trade deal with the u. S. That would give it some sense of stability moving into the future and about trying to really cement the special relationship which is under quite a lot of strain at the moment with disagreements about h uaw ei and other items. Max is right. Youll see a president who is differential to his royal hosts. You will see him enjoy the pomp around the visit as we have seen. The ceremonial aspects of being president appealed to him probably more than anything. I dont actually expect there to be major fireworks. As we have noted repeatedly, the president made sure to do that heading into this visit. He set the tone for it in terms of british politics. He set the tone in terms of aiming at londons mayor who he sees as a useful foil. I think you will see things calm down and be quiet and respectful for the next day and then well see what tomorrow brings. We are watching that closely.
