Getting the tests where we need them. Announcer this is new day. Welcome to our viewers of the United States and all around the world. This is new day. Its wednesday, april 29, 6 00 here in new york. As of this morning, there are more than one million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States. The death toll, more than 58,000. More than 2,000 new deaths reported just yesterday. Now, its true the number of deaths is no longer growing expo nengly. But its also true that the daily death count seems to have settled at a level thats very, very high. What does that tell us . Also this morning, as more states loosen their lockdowns, the top Infectious Disease expert, dr. Anthony fauci is warning that a second wave of the virus is inevitable and how bad it is will depend on keeping measures designed to stop the spread. Its not going to disappear from the planet, which means, as we get into next season, how we handle it will determine our fate. If by that time we have put into place all of the countermeasures that you need to address this, we should do reasonably well. If we dont do that successfully, we could be in for a bad fall and bad winter. So as you know, different states are taking different approaches. Today, floridas governor will outline his plan to reopen businesses. The Texas Governor has decided to allow malls and restaurants to open this friday with limited capacity. Thats a stark contrast to california where governor gavin newsom says his state is, quote, months, not weeks away. Allowing hair salons and gyms to reopen. Meanwhile, President Trump continues to brag about the u. S. Being ahead on testing. But the numbers do not bear that out. Experts say we are far from where we should be. And hes sticking by his remarks from february that the coronavirus will simply vanish. Back in late february, you predicted the numbers would go to zero. How do we it will get down to zero. Martin savidge is live in marietta, georgia. Whats the latest there, martin . Reporter good morning, alisyn, good morning, john. As you say, Johns Hopkins university reporting more than a million cases of coronavirus here in the United States. But as states begin to relax their restrictions and theres more and more of life reopening, experts even on the White House Coronavirus task force are saying a second round of coronavirus is inevitable. A strong warning from the top Infectious Disease doctor. If were unsuccessful or prematurely trying to open up and we have additional outbreaks that are out of control, it could be a rebound to get us right back in the same boat that we were in a few weeks ago. That fear resounding from some state leaders who continue to say testing is still an issue. Theres no way i can safely reopen the state unless we have more testing. But in other states, the open signs are already on the doors of some businesses. Restaurants in georgia have Table Service back and by friday, texas will too. Governor greg abbott told local leaders, they cant override his executive order to relax some restrictions. I hope we dont see a resurge of cases three to four weeks down the road. I mean, people are going to be very careful before they step up. Florida Governor Ron Desantis will announce a plan on his state today. For florida, going from phase one is not a very big leap. Were going to approach measured, thoughtful and data driven way. When Retail Stores are allowed to resume business on may 12th, masks will be recommended but not required. My hope is that everyone wears a mask. Ive said, look, i go out in public, i wear a mask. What this does is it protects the workers. Phase coverings are required by anyone over the age of 2 in illinois where social distancing cant be practiced in public. A stayathome order in illinois is still very much in effect. As many living rooms across the country turned into classrooms for the rest of the academic year, students in california could be heading back to school earlier than expected. Were concerned about that learning loss even into the summer. So we are considering the prospect of an even earlier school year into the fall. As early as late july, early august. In new york, after blue angels and thunderbirds saluted frontline workers, Governor Andrew Cuomo giving this tough reminder. I think today is the day the nightmare will be over, but its not. 335 people passed away yesterday from this virus in this state. Thats 335 families. Meanwhile, largest operators of malls in the United States, thats the Simon Property group, they say theyre going to be opening up 49 of their Shopping Centers starting on friday in ten states. That includes the ones located in texas, indiana, georgia and missouri. Even Small Businesses like back here in georgia at biscuits and more in marietta, theyre glad to be open but are concerned about the future. John and al sib. Martin savidge for us in florida. Joining us now is dr. Colleen craft, associated chief medical officer at Emery University hospital in georgia. Dr. Kraft, i want to start with the numbers. More than a million cases now reported in more than 58,000 deaths reported. More than 2,000 alone just yesterday. If we can put the daily chart up, we can see how many deaths weve had each day over time. More than 2,000 deaths yesterday. I guess that its not growing exponentially anymore, but its leveled off at a very high level, with more than 1,000 deaths for like two weeks straight. What does that tell us . I think its one of those things were thinking about when were easing restrictions that were still having community transmission. Were still having this occurring during a sort of formal and shelter in place. I think as we see things reopening, we need to think about were still having this happen. Its still with us, its still with us in relatively high numbers. I want to also bring in dr. Mercy right now. Hes a former u. S. Surgeon general and Public Health adviser for the biden campaign. Dr. Murphy, what about that. Yesterday the university of washington model that the white house has been using released new updated numbers and they got a lot of attention because they had gone up from the previous expectations of 60,000 americans dead to 74,000. That, they thought, would be by the first week of august. If we stay at this current clip, were going to hit 74,000 well before august. If 2,000 americans if we have leveled off somehow at 2,000 americans dying per day, which is what has basically happened for the last several days, were going to be at 74,000 in a matter of a couple of weeks. Alisyn, youre pointing out a very important point here, which is that we have to be cautious with the models that we look at. We know the models arent perfect and are based on assumption. The ihme model from the university of washington which has been relied upon by the white house is perhaps based on the most optimistic of assumptions, including that every state would do stayathome orders and not lift them pra prematurely. The many states, even like florida which did put in stayathome orders have larger loopholes for religious gatherings, for example. Now we already see that states are starting to relax these restrictions. The key point here is that we are not out of the woods. We are still learning more about this virus each day. It means we have to be cautious and shouldnt be relaxing restrictions until we see cases coming down significantly for a prolonged period of time. We shouldnt do it until we have the testing and con trtact trac capacity. Theres clearly so much tension out there in this country with the desire among some to get back to work and to reopen and to be normal if thats even possible again. Yesterday, dr. Kraft, you had the president order Meat Companies to keep producing. Opening up these Meat Processing plants. I guess that well talk about the economic implications of that. People want their sausage. What are the Public Health implications of forcing workers back in these factories where theyve been getting sick . I think what were going to start to see is that this is shifting from guidance and consistent messaging to really putting the onus for personal responsibility. So its now becoming sort of our decision on how to protect yourselves, what to do because these messages are varied across our country. So its going to be up to us to figure out how were going to keep ourselves safe and keep our families and coworkers safe. I think that that onus is clearly putting back on the businesses and the personal individuals or individuals in this country. Dr. Mur think, i want to talk about Something Else out of the white house yesterday. Vice president pence went to visit the mayo clinic and every Single Person that he was around and encountered had a mask on because thats their policy. And he was well within six feet of people, as you can see. Hes elbow bumping various people and talking to them. Talking to patients. Hes not wearing a mask. And his rationale is that, well, he was recently tested and he was negative. So if youre negative, you dont have to wear a mask . No, alisyn. Clear guidance that people should be Wearing Masks in public. Because you tested negative a few days ago does not mean that youre negative today. Especially in health care settings, its important that we observe these guidelines to protect the people around us. This is also a time we have to rethink how we greet each other. For weeks and weeks, weve been saying that handshakes and fist bumps and elbow bumps require proximity and contact thats not advisable. Incumbent upon our leaders, especially visible leaders to lead by example and to do so by Wearing Masks in public, keeping distance from others. Its worth noting, in this time talking about the different states going their own way and making their own decisions, that is dangerous. There are times we act as 50 states and we do our own thing and there are other times where we have to act as one country. We have to think about the you state as a single house with 50 rooms. If a fire starts in one house, it spreads to the entire country. If we see an outbreak surge in a single statet can quickly spread to other states. Its important to act in a unified way and have strong leadership from the government and certainly to lead by example. Doctor, stick around. Another example of this tension were talking about, a striking scene overnight. Hundreds of people gathering for ab rabbis funeral in new york despite social distancing rules. The mayor had a controversial response to this. How should Something Like this be dealt with Going Forward . Its just that its. Lavender. Yes it is, its for men but i like the smell of it laughs soon, people will be walking back through your door. Soon, life will move forward. Well welcome back old colleagues, get to know new ones some things may change, but well still be here, right here, so you can work on the business of getting your business back. At paycom, our focus will always be you and well see you soon. New scrutiny this morning for one key component of the testing in this country, the Antibody Test which helped determine if you have had coronavirus. Real questions this morning about whether they work. One researcher says the accuracy is, quote, really terrible. Elizabeth cohen has the latest. Antibody testing to check for past infection. Officials said these tests are critical to reopening the economy. But there are concerns many of them dont work very well. The problem is that these are tests that need to be validated and calibrated. And many of the tests out there dont do that. Scientists in california, includi decided to see how theyre working. Several had frequent false positives. One more than 15 of the time. Three others, false positives more than 10 of the time or more. One of the researchers calling these results really terrible. Last month, the u. S. Food and Drug Administration relaxed their standards for these tests allowing them them to be sold without submitting any data that they work. The fda and other agencies have been saying theyll figure out which tests work best. But the fda telling cnn they have nothing to sharon this effort. While scientists try to work it out, doctors at texas a m announcing theyre going to start a Clinical Trial of a 100yearold tuberculosis vaccine and hope it works for covid19. Sometimes we have found that an old drug, one weve used for years, can serve a new purpose. An advantage of old drugs for new purposes, theyve been used before so doctors know a lot about their safety profile. Hundreds of millions of doses of the bcg vaccine are given every year, mostly in developing countries. A disadvantage, since it wasnt designed specifically for covid19, it might not work for covid19 and it could be harmful to some. Seems a bit of a stretch. But its very novel. And desperate times demand desperate measures. Its worth the Clinical Trial. In the end, it could be a combination of old and new drugs that get us out of this pandemic. We need a multipronged approach. We need help here and we need to go down every trail, investigate every possibility. Elizabeth cohen, cnn reporting. Ncaa you very much for that thank you very much for that update. Dr. Vivek murthy and dr. Colleen kraft back with us. I want to show you a video of a funeral of a rabbi in brooklyn. Many hasidic jews not showing social distancing. Thats crystal clear. Mayor de blasio went to help break the gathering up and said in response that it offended many people over profiling the Jewish Community what i want to tell you about. Were talking about this tension between what people want to do and really should do. A gathering like that in the epicenter of this pandemic right now in the United States, that has to be dangerous. Yes. I agree with you. I think one of our concerns is that we are getting such mixed messages and were sort of making our own choices that its really difficult to know how this is really going to be controlled as we continue to sort of ebb and flow on some of these gatherings that happen and events that are happening. So i think it just brings us back to the same message of we really have to work ourselves and its within our control to prevent this transmission for ourselves and loved ones. Hand hygiene, doing physical distancing in public, dont trust any surfaces you havent cleaned. If you cant create that scenario for yourself, then you may want to avoid this interaction. There are lots of things that are important to many of us. All of us want to get back to doing what we were doing before. But its going to be very difficult to get there if we continue to practice kind of sort of haphazard Infection Prevention practices. Dr. Murmurthy, i put this ine category of the Vice President not wearing a mask at the mayo clinic. We all want an exception, we want someplace where we can do something not necessarily advised but its okay because i think im doing it responsibly or its okay because i want to do it or need to do it. Mourning is very difficult. We all want to go to funerals. I get that. Still, its hard to know what is right when theres so much mixed messaging around the country. This is why communication is so essential during pandemics like this. There are Core Principles in how you communicate during a pandemic which is essential that we observe. For example, you always have to be transparent and truthful. You always have to lead with science and scientists. But you also have to be em pathic. People need to know that you understand the challenges youre facing and that you feel the pain and struggle theyre enduring. Right now there are millions of people around america who are not able to say goodbye to their loved ones who cant go to icus and Nursing Homes to visit their elderly relatives. This is extremely painful. If people dont think their leaders understand that, youre not getting you run into situations where they feel they dont need to observe the rules or cant anymore. We have to be able to support people, empathize with them but communicate clearly about what needs to be done. One other piece of news, Simon Properties which owns Shopping Centers, theyre going to open 49 of them, largely in states that are beginning to reopen themselves. Thats an economic story. But where it concerns you in Public Health, its something you raised before thats fascinating. They may open, but are people going to go . Thats what we dont know yet. Some stores wont reopen. Gap is not reopening its individual stores. So the other question is, what will people do and how do people need to feel in order to reopen . Yes. I think dr. Murthy said it eloquently. Our messaging is becoming its unclear what is the appropriate course of action or not. I do think it comes back to, again, us taking within ourselves the control to prevent the transmission. So i will be interested as well to see if people actually attend events and go to malls if theyre really concerned about their health, if they have a medically Fragile Family member. If they themselves have medical diseases. We want to prevent this transmission because we want to stay alive. I think it will unfortunately be seeing how were going to balance that with some of these openings. Dr. Kraft, dr. Murthy, thank you both very much for being with us. Dr. Murthy, youll be back to talk about a subject of paramount importance that you wrote a book on. Thats loneliness during this crisis. Thank you very much for being with us. President trump ordering Meat Processing plants to stay open but workers are getting sick. So whats the answer here . So that we can get the food we need and keep workers safe. Youre first. President trump invoking the defense production act to order Meat Processing plants to stay open to avoid a meat shortage. But thousands of workers have gotten sick with coronavirus and at least 20 have died. Cnns omar jimenez is outside of a plant in green bay, wisconsin. Whats the plan, omar . Reporter alisyn, President Trumps executive order likely to have an effect on the affected plants here in the green bay area. Of course, across the country as well. With this order, under the defense production act is declaring the Meat Processing facilities as Critical Infrastructure in the United States and this comes as some manufacturers, tyson foods for example, were considering operating at just 20 capacity due to closures we have seen over coronavirus clusters at different facilities across this country. There are some estimates that had all of the closures in total affecting around 80 of the Meat Processing capability in the United States. Of course, when you look at a place like here in green bay, wisconsin, this place is not immune to some of those effects, both on the health and on the business side as well. Just three Meat Processing facilities in this green bay area alone, the coronavirus confirmed cases at those facilities account for more than half of all the confirmed cases in this county, brown county, wisconsin and is part of the reason why the infection rate is in counties being highest of any county in wisconsin. Now, of the three that were affected here, jbs, american foods and jbs was the only one that actually closed its doors over the weekend. But now theyre likely in a position where they have to consider reopening. At that point in particular, they had more than 250 employees alone that had test hd positive. As we found out from the health department, 79 linked cases to those employees. A lot of questions they have to answer, both at the company and health level to try and get the workers back into the processing facilities. John . Omar, thank you very much. These are really important questions and serious legal and political questions surround thag as well. Dr. Anthony fauci tells the new york times, if you cant guarantee safety, then you have to bite the bullet and say we may have to go without sports for this season. Those comments come as Major League Baseball is allowing teams to offer refunds for games not being played. Andy scholes with more on the bleacher report. Hey, andy. All the big sports leagues and the nba and baseball, the games that have gone by are considered postponed not canceled. No refunds have been given yet. Major universities bracing for a bleak financial situation. Why one expert is predicting a bloodbath as classes resume this fall. Americas oldest lighthouse has weathered many storms. Seeing the break in the clouds before anyone else. Together, well weather this storm. baby sounds and cooing notification chime keyboard clicking this morning a new possible plan for schools in california. The governor there, gavin newsom, says they have a plan for the summer to help students make up for the time lost to the pandemic. We recognize theres been a learning loss because of this disruption. Were concerned about that learning loss even into the summer and so we are considering the prospect of an even earlier school year into the fall. As early as late july, early august. Okay. That got a lot of parents attention. Also this. Americas colleges and universities are feeling the financial strain of the pandemic. It could get worse when students show up or dont show up this fall. So whats the plan . Well, cnns evan joins us with more. Good morning. The big challenge for schools. Weve been talking to educators, administrators and parents all across the education spectrum since this began. The big challenge for colleges is just the unpredictability of what the fall is going to look like. Its going to be a bloodbath to see which colleges survive this. Colleges and universities are scrambling. The level of disruption to not just one university but all universities. Theres a financial crunch coming to College Campuses that School President s like the university of michigan have not seen in their lifetimes. It can be analogized with pearl harbor at the turn of the second world war, which came on more gradually than the covid19 pandemic. Its leaving school finances decimated. Every college and university in the country is facing a cash flow crisis. First, its the need to money for students, particularly for room and board. Most schools heavily rely on nonteu ix revenue. Room and board is one stream. But they rent out space, hosting events and selling tickets to sports games. That works out to 50 billion a year for colleges and universities and that has just come to a complete stop. The worst news for school finances hasnt arrived yet. The big revenue boost for college and universities will be in the fall. What happens if 20 of your students dont arrive . A significant number of students are rethinking their plans for next semester. According to surveys conducted by Higher Education groups. That could mean tough choices are coming. Some schools have announced layoffs, pay cuts for employees and potentially canceling big construction projects. Johns Hopkins University is preparing for losses of more than 100 million this year. Other schools predict bigger losses. The federal government passed the cares act to prop up the country as it reels from the pandemic. 14 billion went to colleges and universities. Of that amount, roughly half will go to students. We estimate the total cost of room and board refunds alone at 8 billion. But it is not going to provide money to save institutions over the longterm. Theres not really a debate about if colleges will reopen this fall. But a question of how. Like harvard told students this week. College dormitories can be places where infections spread very quickly. The social distancing is going to be a huge impact on these students, whether its in the dorms, in the cafeterias and at sporting events. You can have smaller seminars or teaching or smaller groups in larger rooms. Schools have to convince students that they can create a safe environment for them. If a school is like, look, were going to reopen campus, would you go . I think it depends on really what other people are saying. What Government Agencies are saying. But right now within the next month or two, no, i wouldnt feel safe. There will be College Classes this fall at universities around the country. But we dont know if theyll be online, we dont know if theyll be on campus, we dont know where students are going to live. All that uncertainty is weighing on the students as well as the schools to figure out what theyre going to do next. Alisyn. Yes, it is very complicated to see into the future what this fall is going to look like. Evan, thank you very much for all of that reporting. Social distancing makes it hard at times for us to maintain Human Connections. So were going to get some advice on fighting loneliness during this time from the former Surgeon General. Theres no question its something that i would recommend. A 10 Million Dollar fundls at t has created to support Distance Learning tools, curriculum and resources to help educators and families keep school in session because the key to keeping kids learning, is keeping kids connected. Most of the country still locked down. Americans have never been so isolated. How can we maintain connections with all this social distancing. Joining us again, dr. Vivek murthy. Hes the author of a new book on this exact subject. Together the healing power of Human Connection in a sometimes lonely world. We should note hes a Public Health adviser for the biden campaign. You wrote this before social distancing and the pandemic. Thats how much of a problem it was even without this. Now you say were suffering from a social recession. What do you mean . Well, john, long before covid19 was on the scene, i was realizing when i traveled the country as Surgeon General that many people were struggling with loneliness. I had seen loneliness in my own life and the lives of my patients as i cared for them in the hospital. I hadnt appreciated how common this was. People would often say to me, i feel i have to shoulder all these burdens alone. I feel if i disappear tomorrow, no one would notice. I feel invisible. I was hearing this from moms and dads in the midwest, from people in small fishing villages in alaska and members of congress as well. What i learned during that time, john, is that not only is loneliness common with adults in the United States but its also consequential that people loneliness noting thats associated with a greater risk of heart disease, depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances. My worry right now about covid19, this physical distancing were being asked to observe, if were not careful, if we dont act differently, then we are putting ourselves at risk of deepening loneliness. Something i think of as a social recession. I dont think it has to be that way. I think we can change that. To be clear, were faced with unprecedented challenges and put in positions we havent been put in before. We cant be those sick in the hospital. I havent seen either of my parents who live alone in months and i wont be able to in all likelihood in months. These are the types of challenges we face now. You say it can have real medical implications. It can. If were not careful, chronic loneliness can create o chronic stress. It creates a physiological stress state in our body. When were in that state for a long period of time, it can increase inflammation and our risk of chronic illnesses. I do think that ultimately, this topic and the reason i wrote about it, i think that theres a source of hope here. Because what i realized, in our relationships that we find one of our greatest resources, a resource that can help us be healthier, perform better in the workplace and at school and even help heal our dialog and our politics. Heres what we can do right now to avoid that social recession. We can make it a point to spend at least 15 minutes a day talking to ideally Video Conferencing with people we love. Thats a way of staying connected to the outside world. Second, make sure that the quality of the time we have them is high. We can do that by eliminating distraction when talking to others. Particularly from our phones and third, look for ways to serve. One of the great realizations i had in writing this book is that service is a powerful antidote to loneliness. It shifts the focus to someone else. It reminds us that we have value to bring to the world. These three simple steps can be powerful in terms of the impact they have on us and keeping us more connected at a time when we desperately need it. We can put up the list so people can see the advice youre giving of things you can do to deal with loneliness. Stop texting. Start calling. Video calls really, really good. I also think you need to be focused on instagram. One of the things is interesting. You say practice moments of solitude. So how can practicing moments of solitude help you from being lonely . John, it turns out that our ability to connect with other people is very much influenced by the space that were in. By our ability to actually connect with ourselves and be grounded and rooted in the moment. Right now theres so much turmoil in the world around us, by taking just a few minutes of solitude where we sit on our stoop and feel the breeze against our face, where we remember three things were grateful for, where we use a walk in nature, to pray or reflect, that is time where the noise around us settles and we can ground ourselves and center ourselves. When we approach other people when that place is centeredness, our conversations are better. We can listen more deeply and people more connected to them. Overall, if we approach this covid19 pandemic with an eye to where its strengthening our connections, we recommit to the people in our lives and our relationships, i think we can actually use this moment as social revival. That will be better for us as individuals, for our health and wellbeing and be better for society. What are the limits of say, zoom or facetime . Well, zooming and Video Conferencing with people is not the same as being in person. Nothing is. Thats why i think for so many of us being physically distanced from others is so difficult and painful. It is far better than the alternative, which is not having any contact with anyone. In 92 i lived through hurricane andrew and we lost power and phones for weeks and weeks and werent able to really see anyone. That was a very difficult time. This is a moment where we can use technology for our benefit to stay connected to others. Dr. Vivek murthy, thank you so much for being with us. Lets put the book on the screen so people can see it. The title is together. The healing power of Human Connection in a sometimes lonely world. What incredible timing. Thanks for being with us. Thank you for your work. Thank you, john. Appreciate that. New day continues right now. If were unsuccessful or prematurely try to open up, it could be a rebound. Businesses, schools, child care center, we believe were weeks, not months away from puts the power of a decisionmaking into the hands of the people. I just dont feel comfortable opening up.
