Nascar bans Confederate Flags, confederate statues coming down across the country. Popular Reality Television shows about police canceled. A moment of reckoning with racism is here, but where does the president stand . Joining us now, cnn political correspondent, abby phillip and cnn political analyst, david gregory. You know, abby, i said before, the president hasnt stated clearly what he is for, but he has stated clearly what he is against. Hes against acknowledging that theres systemic racism in Law Enforcement. Hes against even discussing renaming army bases that are named after confederate generals. Someone pointed out to me on twitter, though, in declaring what he is against, maybe he is giving us a window into what hes for. I do think that at this point, we have to we only have to take his actions and words and his priorities as a signal of where he is on this. I think it has been pretty clear that hes consistently wanted to use confederate symbolism as a way to keep wedges that already exist in this country firmly placed where they are. This has dated back years. But its one of the things going back to charlottesville, going back to this issue where now the military wants to address the bases named after confederate generals. And you saw caylee mcennayny at the white house, at the podium yesterday saying she couldnt believe that anyone could possibly suggest the u. S. Military might be racist, even though the military was segregated for many, many years, while black americans served in the military. Then those same black americans came back to the u. S. To a segregated country that discriminated against them. And youve heard not a word from this white house about any of those things. Their priorities are where they say they are. The president says he wants to be on the side of peaceful protests, but he says, you can only protest when you protest the way that he wants you to. No kneeling is what the message is from this white house. And i think that its going to be very challenging for them to suddenly wake up and start suggesting that what their priorities are are racial reconciliation in this country, when theyve done really quite the opposite of that for many years at this point. David gregory, i think President Trump has told us what hes for. He really likes the confederacy. He really is a fan of that history. He is now siding with the confederacy, as john has outlined, againsts in ka nascar nfl, the army, obviously, the 14 of the country that are plaque and all soft their white allies. Let me tell you why we know this. Here is his tweet. It has been suggested that we should rename as many as ten of our legendary military bases, such as ft. Bragg in North Carolina, ft. Hood in texas, ft. Benning in texas. These monumental and very powerful bases have become a part of a Great American heritage and a history of winning victory and freedom. There you have it. Yeah, theres not a lot of ambiguity there. And im sure he hasnt said this, but weve heard this from him before. Im sure he thinks this is all tantamount to Political Correctness run amok and to liberals taking a moment and overreaching. And extending it everywhere. Well, thats not the case. You know, this debate about the confederacy and confederate memorials and statues has been going on for a long time, and its reached critical mass, as a lot of things have, because of the murder of george floyd that are really, as you framed it before, making American Society grapple with and reckon with our racist past and our racist reality. You know, i really dont think President Trump is the one to listen to on this and to take seriously. Ive talked to military leaders, including general we trace, who has come out publicly saying, why would we valorize, why would you glamorize civil war leaders. You know, im for america, i stand with america. Thats what lincoln did, and even at the time, there was right and there was wrong. And the confederates were tra d traitors. Why would we have vestiges to them if not to play into this idea, this revisionism of the lost cause and of southern heritage, which was white supremacy. I mean, this is a critical part of americas story, but thats what it is. And thats where the president is, if hes going to stand in the way of these moves. Just to prove that point, david, i looked up some of these civil war generals. Henry benning, thats who ft. Benning in georgia, where all u. S. Special forces go through ft. Benning the georgia, general benning was a vile racist who spoke out in favor of secession even before the civil war. Listen to what he said. He said, by the time the north shall attain the power, the black race will be in a large majority and then well have black governors, lack legislators, black juries, black everything. We may readily assume that war will break out everywhere, like hidden fire from the earth, and it is probable that the white race, being superior in every respect, may push the other back. Just makes me think, what is it like to be a black special forces officer going through ft. Benning, georgia, knowing that the place that i trained and lived is named after that guy. And also, think about kids who go to school in northern virginia. My kids play basketball, so we went to w. Stewart high school where my son had a tournament. And i was walking with my daughter and i said, do you know who he was. And do you know the history of what he participated in and what his views were . Can you imagine a black family in this area having to go to School Every Day under this banner. It just seems totally wrong. I will say, we can talk about this, but abby doesnt have to imagine it. And i will say, my fatherinlaw is an air force veteran and grew up in the south and when you grow up in the south in this country as a black person, youre very used to things being named after confederate figures. And segregationists. And its something that black people actually have lived with for a long time. And, you know, its finally a moment where its actually not just black people who are saying this, but its white americans who are saying, its time to show where our priorities lie. Were not wiping these people from the history books. Were simply saying, lets not venerate them. Lets make it so that when you drive through richmond, virginia, you dont have to stare up at a massive statue dedicated to someone who thought that you were less than human. I think that is not too much to ask. But, you know, it is a debate, as david said. And i think whats notable is that President Trump doesnt even want to have a conversation about it. A conversation that his own military does want to have, because they know that their black Service Members who fight for this country and shed blood for this country deserve the same kind of respect as everyone else in this country. And deserve to be treated as if their lives matter and their selfworth matters. Abby, im just curious. I mean, this is the middle of a political campaign. Do the strategists around President Trump, if he still has some, do they like that hes siding with the confederacy . Do they think that thats a winning position . There are definitely some voices that the president listens to who do think that these kinds of battles, these, you know, as david put it, Political Correctness battles, they go back to the core of his message as a political figure. But then again, you do have a lot of people around the president who recall the charlottesville era and believe that that was a really terrible time for the president. There was a lot of consternation in the white house when the president consistently wants to speak up on these issues of the confederacy, defending those White Supremacists protesters who were in the streets and i think many people in the white house view this moment as very similar to that and they wish he would not inject himself into some of these conversations. Now, does that extend to them advising him not to do this . Im not so sure. I think at this point, many people in the white house simply know, this is what the president wants to do and they just allow him to express himself on social media and in the case of yesterday, they literally printed out his tweet and handed it out to reporters in the Briefing Room to make it very clear that the president labored over this statement and wanted it to be made public so everyone could know his position on confederate forts. I think this is a classic example of a topic, a big topic for which this president simply doesnt have the bandwidth. I mean, you can look at this as somehow a Political Correctness debate or an overreaction or you can say, no, were really in the middle of a kind of reckoning with racism in this country that is allowing major institutions, political figures, individuals to open their eyes to say, you know, theres lots of things that we need to look at here about policing, about attitudes among whites, about implicit bias, about our history and the monuments to our history that we have around us. George floyd is a name that will be remembered for lots of reasons, including forcing a kind of reckoning thats real, thats big, and that certainly i see the potential to be quite long lasting. Not simply, whats the moment of a reform measure passed by congress. David gregory and abby phillip, thank you very much. And to davids point about people not listening to the president , nascar isnt. The nfl isnt. Amazon doesnt seem to be. Crossfit doesnt seem to be. Hbo max doesnt seem to be. Heres a snapshot of where we are this morning. 18 states are seeing the number of new cases increase. And a leading Infectious Disease expert predicts an additional 100,000 americans will die by september. A new model now predicts a steep rise this fall. Joining us, an Infectious Disease specialist with the Bloomberg School of health. Dr. Adalja, explain the math. It took five months of the virus spreading. For a couple of months, unchecked before we knew about it for us to reach the 100,000 mark of americans dead. How, now that we know about it and we are theoretically being smarter and washing our hands and wearing masks, how are we going to reach another 100,000 dead in just three months . Thats an important question that i have, as well, this model uses a lot of different metrics. It tries to fit the curve on where it expects deaths to based on whats going on on other countries. Thats the number they came up with. I think its important to remember that these models are not predictions and its really important to look at their assumptions. To me and a lot of people, it doesnt make as good sense to think about that acceleration in deaths occurring. I think its clear that well continue to have cases and deaths, but i think it will be of the same magnitude, when we have chapnges put into our society. Even with increased mobility, people are not having Mass Gatherings. Im not sure well reach that plateau of 100,000 deaths, but its important to know what the assumptions are going into that before we take that to be exactly a crystal ball. And i think thats important with models. That theyre not completely reality. I think theyre reflections of reality. I think weve all developed something of a model fetish over the last few months. I think whats really important is what were seeing happen before our eyes today, doctor. And the most alarming statistic to me is the number of states where were seeing an increase in hospitalizations, right . One of the question weve had for some time is the increase in new cases because were testing more . And there may be an element of that, but an increase in hospitalizations isnt about testing, its about sick people. There are more sick people in the hospital in all of those states youre looking at right there, including some big state. What does that tell you . That tell you that this virus is spreading unchecked in certain places. As weve said before, social distancing was about preserving hospital capacity. And many places have opened up and done okay. But there are places that we have to concentrate our efforts on, such as texas, for example, such as utah, where there are cases that are increasing, hospital bed increasing, the percent positivity of test increasing. And those states really need to issue guidance about how to get the number of cases under control. We dont want any of those states going into nearcrises mode like what happened in new york. That will be the norm in this pandemic. Titrating our efforts to hospitallevel capacity. And thats something we cant ignore and have to keep monitoring admonitor ing as we go therough this. You said people are no longer having Mass Gatherings. Not so fast. Heres a picture of the Trump Reelection Campaign staff from yesterday, or at least it was posted yesterday by Vice President pence, who you see at the head of the screen there. Hes the head of the Coronavirus Task force. I cant see a mask in this group and nobody standing 6 feet apart, heir not standing 6 inches apart. By the way, in virginia, the guideline is no more than ten people at any one gathering. I dont know what the Vice President then deleted that after they were called out and criticized for that. You know, obviously, those folks are willing to take their own health into their own hands, but when they show up at a hospital, theyre all of our problems. The level of Mass Gatherings versus one year ago is much less. We dont have professional sports. We dont have rock concerts all over the country. That will have some impact, positive, on the number of cases with. But it is important to remember as we go forward, that Mass Gatherings have to be taken very seriously, because the number of contacts that you can have in one of those events, because theres likely to be an exposure, just because of the prechb prevalence of disease in this country will overwlem hospital contain contact tracers. So we have to be very careful with Mass Gatherings. And they shouldnt be the norm. And many places are still not going to want to have that many people congregating together. Thats why weve heard about the rnc canceling its moving from North Carolina because of the restrictions on how many people can be there. And i think thats going to be important, that we really have to worry about these places where super spreading events could occur. Where multiple people could get infected and contact tracers get overwhelmed. In terms of a picture that sends a message, wow. Dr. Adalja, in terms of where we are right now and as you think about things going forward, the number of daily deaths continues to drop slowly, but were still in the 800 to 900 range a day. And, you know, if that plateaus, thats a lot of new deaths. That is just a lot of new deaths. And i know that again, frankly, the models dont interest me as much as they seem to interest other people, but the number of deaths could increase in the fall as well, if things dont go well. But even if they dont increase, even if they stay where they are, thats a lot of death. I do think we have to drill down into those deaths and understand where theyre occurring. In many places, were seeing 50 or twothirds happening in nursing homes. And thats been the real tragedy of this pandemic. We know this virus is really deadly to those in the elderly age group. We immediate to enhance our protection of nursing home, assisted living centers, places where this virus can run rampant and try to understand why this is continuing to spread in these situations. There have been recommendations to do universal testing there, to increase Infection Control in nursing homes, but i think we have to, as we move into the next phase and the deaths are to a lower number, really try to prevent those deaths by figure out ep deem logically whats causing these people to become infects and protect the more vulnerable populations that are more likely to end up in the hospital and die from this. Dr. Adalja, great to have you on this morning. Not just the United States where this is a major issue this morning, coronavirus is spreading in latin america, now even where places that so far the pandemic had been contained. Cnn has reporters all around the world covering this for you. Reporter im matt rivers in mexico city. Latin america and the caribbean have passed a grim new milestone in this outbreak with the region reporting more than 70,000 deaths combined for the First Time Since this outbreak began. We continue to see large numbers of newly confirmed cases and deaths in the hardesthit countries like brazil, mexico, chile, and peru, but perhaps just as concerning that the w. H. Perhaps that is the reason of the Panamerican Health organization now says, quote, the covid19 pandemic has pushed our region to the limit. Despite President Trump in some cases siding on the side of confederate heritage. Joining us now is l. Z. Granderson, a sports and culture columnist the Washington Times and hes the cohost of the morning show in los angeles. As someone who covers sports and culture and as someone who is a citizen of planet earth, when nascar bans the Confederate Flag, its a big deal, lz, you were frozen there for a moment. I was just talking about nascar banning the Confederate Flag. I know there were no fans at the track last night and thats a different thing. Still, the symbolism of that just cant be lost. No, it should not be lost, because out of all of the athletes that ive thought about speaking out on behalf of, in terms of race equality and addressing criminal justice reform, Bubba Wallace is in a sport that just letses s s saa the greatest image of being racist. A lot of people view a lot of the fan base as being racist. So for him to ask that the Confederate Flag, which is a huge symbol of racism to be removed from all races, he was really stepping out there on the ledge of concern and i was shocked that he actually followed through, therese to this point. As you said earlier, theres no fans, theres no way to enforce, as of right now. But simply making that statement is hugely symbolic. And lz, what was your reaction when you heard that nascar was going to ban the Confederate Flags . I have to tell you, im a Big Country Music fan. I used to go to concerts all the time. And i always felt as if the music spoke to me. But when you look around and see the Confederate Flag in the audience from time to time, youre reminded of some of the ugliness thats connected to that music and that culture and some of the people, so when i saw that announcement that nascar was kboigoing to ban thi flag, i got lately emotional with you, to be quite honest. Thats a huge step. When we were talking about this on my radio show yesterday, i said before the announcement, i said, the ceo of nascar has a choice to either send out a statement but then continue to hold up some of these racist values or become the ceo of racism. Those are like the choices. And he decided he didnt want to be the ceo of racism. And i applaud that. Lz, i know we havent snapped our fingers and made everything perfect, but it does strike me that a lot of things have changed and a lot of decisions have been made over just the last few days, whether it wases in karr, whether its a e pulling live pd off the air, cro crossfit pushing its ceo out or stepping down. What does this tell you and whats the significance . As ive been saying for the better part of two weeks, the small Little Island that people thought were safe where you can characterize yourself as nonracist disappearing and this ground swell of change is gobbling it up. And theres going to be two sides. Youre either antiracist or just complicit with racism. And what youre seeing, our companies, our leagues, our institutions are looking at itself in the mirror and taking a hard long look and asking, what is my role in all of this. Am i helping to keep it alive, even directly or inadvertently . And i applaud all of these companies that are taking a chance, shoutout to jeff bezos for putting that woman on black, because thats whats needed. You cant just sit back and go, well, im not racist and i dont agree, then keep it moving. No, thats why were still here. You have to fight it. And ive been happy to see these companies and institutions fight it. What do you say people who say, but you cant erase and you shouldnt erase our countrys history. And i think of our cousin company, hbo max, thats taking gone with the wind out of its catalog of options right now until they say they can provide some historical context. That has always been considered an important movie in this country. So whats the response to that . First of all, if you feel like your history is being erased out of pop culture, welcome to our world. Our history has been erased. Erased to the point where we had to beg for a month to celebrate our history and when that happened, its the shortest month of the year. If you have any complaints about history being erased, get in line, with that being said, the history that has been said about slavery, the antebellum south, the Confederate Flag, the statues, lets just say its been whitewashed and sanitized anyway. I actually dont think you necessarily need to take down confederate statues, because i think its important you have the history, but lets tell the truth that these people that youre honoring rebelled against this country, fought to keep slavery in place, and didnt give a damned about people who look like me. If you want to put that on your monument, put that on there. But lets not forget these are Great Americans, because they actually fought to leave america. Lz, great to have you with us. The terrarump campaign is tg the unprecedented step of demanding an apology and retraction from cnn because of our National Poll that shows the president trailing joe biden. Cnns ryan nobles live at the white house with the latest on this. Ryan . Well, john, there are two things that arent surprising about these developments. The first is that the president will often threaten legal action against someone who he sees a perceived grievance from. And the other is the president often take place issue with polls, particularly polls that dont necessarily see him doing very well. The difference here is combining those two things and threatening legal action because he didnt like the results of that poll. And when you look at the poll, you can understand why the president is taking some issue with it. First of all, lets look at his approval, disapproval in this cnn poll. It shows, 57 of americans disapprove of the president s Job Performance and only 38 approval. And when you look at the headtohead between him and joe biden, you see biden with a big lead there. We should point out, john, this poll is right in line with many of the other polls that have been commissioned by various news outlets over the past several weeks. Its not really an outlier in any sense or fashion, but that hasnt stopped the Trump Campaign from threatening this legal action. And this is what the Trump Campaign lawyer sent to cnn asking them to poll down. It said, quote, the cnn poll is meant to mislead American Voters through a biased questionnaire and skewed sampling, and that from jenna ellis and michael gra glassner, their coo, but cnn has no plans to take that poll down. Thats because its laughable. The concept is laughable from a legal and a political sense. The cnns general counsel sent a letter back to the Trump Campaign in response. What exactly does it say . Reporter let me read the entire letter to you. It reads like this, dear miss ellis. This letter responds to your letter dated on june 9th, 2020. To my knowledge, this is the first time in its 40year history that cnn has been threatened with legal action because an american politician or campaign did not like cnns polling results. To the extent that we have received legal threats from political leaders in the country, they have typically come from countries like venezuela or other regimes where there is little or no respect for a free and independent media. Cnn is well aware of the reputation of John Mclaughlin and mclaughlin and associates. In 2014, his firm famously reported that eric cantor was leading his primary challenger david bratt by 34 points only to lose by 11 points, a 45point swing. The firm currently has a c d rating from 538. In any event, mclaughlin was able to evaluate and criticize cnns most recent poll because cnn is transparent and publishes its methodology along with its polling results. Because of this, mclaughlin was free to publish its own critique of cnns analysis and share his criticisms across the u. S. Media landscape. Thats how free speech works. Its the american way. Your letter is factually and legally baseless. Yet another bad faith attempt by the campaign to muzzle speech. Your allegations and demands are rejected in their entirety, very truly yours, david c. Individual lan ty. So cnn not backing down in any way, shape, or form. That 45 error in the eric cantor race, outside the margin of error, 45 , in case youre wondering. Ryan nobles at the white house, thanks very much for that. Alisyn . An historic weather event, the remnants of al Tropical Storm are drenching the great lakes.
