Politician. You say you have never seen anything like it. Yeah. I mean, you know, the what dr. Redfield was saying yesterday was i listened to it. It wasnt shocking. Its what a lot of other people have already said and andy slaven and i were on the show and the evidence is an your nose and if we put on a mask, physically distanced, weve been saying that for some time and the idea that the vaccine is going to immediately flip a switch is not true. I mean, theres not enough vaccines immediately available. We know thats true. We can talk about that. Even after you get it, you know, depending on how effective it is, we may still need to abide by the Public Health measures for some time to come. What was shocking was not what dr. Redfield said, but how the president responded to it. Basically, you know, arguing with the evidence, the science we have been talking about for months. Isnt it shocking how the spokesperson from the cdc responded to what President Trump said. President trump is on a different time line and yet, yesterday, the spokesperson for the cdc had to kind of do the back bends, these rhetorical back bends to somehow conform with President Trumps time line by saying, well, he meant when it would be completed for the general public. Not when it would be available to the general public. I mean, i know that i have read your notes that say all of this just sows doubt in these institutions, the cdc, the fda, that well need when the vaccine comes out. I hope everybody keeps in mind whats important. Which is, first of all, it will be great news and very fast to get a vaccine over the course of the next year. I know everybody is impatient and that we want it now, but were better off having a safe vaccine that everyone can trust and that goes through the scientific process. Next year its still very, very speedy. Even if mr. Trump plays politics with the vaccine, we shouldnt lose our faith that vaccines will be part of the answer. But sanjay said it exactly right. Its part of the answer because a vaccine is going to be its going to be somewhat effective in some people for some period of time. What those somes are we cant possibly know. It will be a big help and a big part of the arsenal, but will so our masks and the behavior changes and the new therapies. All those things together are going to get us on the right path but i urge us to be patient and i urge us not to lose confidence in science even with the politics going on. I know the other day when the president tried to undermine mask wearing at the abc town hall and said that he looks at waiters and thats waiters as in people who serve food as if he communicate with him and they say that masks dont work. You say its a side show, but im not sure because of what weve heard from the president over the last few days. Why did he tell dr. Redfield and say youre wrong about the masks and making fun of joe biden for wearing a mask . It seems that undermining mask wearing is part of the new strategy. Yeah. I mean, i think what i meant by side show is i walked that town hall. I think he was sort of making up a reason, you know, people are asking why arent you behind masks and his answer was some version of, well, waiters dont like them. That obviously is a terrible answer and, you know, most of the country is behind mask wearing. All of his Public Health officials are behind mask wearing. There are people around him, you know, to protect him wear masks. Also be tested. Do all those things. So, you know, i dont know. I guess its a very clear, concise wedge issue that has developed because, you know, he has sort of politicized masks. You know, we have seen so many countries around the world and we can see the graph again, which we have shown on your program before. If you look at the u. S. Versus italy and south korea and look at the trend lines, the trend lines in many of the other places have improved dramatically and the United States has stayed up high. The overall case count is plateauing at a high number. Why . They dont have a vaccine. They dont have some magic therapeutic, they did all of the things we could have done as well. Why the president is so against masks i think is because its easy to basically drive a wedge with this issue. Vaccines are harder to explain. Therapeutics harder to explain. You know, this mask thing is just bizarre to me. I dont think he has a reason as to why hes so against masks. Andy, i want to play what dr. Redfield of the cdc said about masks yesterday because it helped me see it in a totally new and more optimistic light. So listen to what he said. These the most important, powerful Public Health tool we have, if we did it for 8, 10, 12 weeks we might bring this pandemic under control. I might even go so far as to say this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against the covid than a vaccine, because if i dont get a immune response the vaccine wont protect me but this face mask will. Its like we have the power. I was telling john it reminds me of, you know, the wizard of oz, dorothy, you have had the power all along. We dont have to wait for Silver Bullet for the vaccine and we have the power that might be even more protective. Look at the continent of africa. 1. 3 billion people. They have had fewer than 30,000 deaths in the continent of africa. They dont have all of the technology and all of the resources. They dont have the expectation that our government going to solve this for them. This is low tech. And this is a slow pitch. This is not that hard to understand. Which is why what sanjay said is very important here. If we had a consistent message, a consistent message about masks that theyre not controversial, that they work and that indeed six to eight weeks and dr. Redfield is correct. The virus does go away. Now hes got to stop freelancing that bit at the end more powerful than a vaccine, why would the head of the cdc sow any concern about vaccine that he doesnt need to, thats not his point. But his point about masks is right. I thought youd going to bring up the wizard of oz to make me feel better about wearing ruby slippers. Sanjay, just to be clear, the time line for a Vaccine Availability to the general public is what dr. Redfield said yesterday and we did hear from dr. Anthony fauci yesterday on when they do become available whats really important. So listen. What would happen if only a third or twothirds or a half get vaccinated is that enough . I dont think it would be at all. I think thats important for the public to appreciate and thats why i appreciate the opportunity of having this interview with you. One of the things you need to understand its the combination of how effective a vaccine is and how many people use it. You thought that sound was really important, sanjay. Why . Well, you know, we always talk about a vaccine being safe and effective as the two criteria which they are. But safe, effective and trusted, you know, we have to add in that third criteria here. We now know that the number of people who say the percentage of people who say they would not take this vaccine if authorized in the fall but not approved is over half the country. That number actually went up since may. Thats got to change. I understand that we have been reporting on the concerns about the fda for some months because of the emergency use authorization given to hydroxychloroquine, the exaggerating of data around convalescent plasma. But i think i have talked to, you know, several people about this been reporting on it for some time, theres a necessary and safety regulatory process when it comes to vaccines. I mean, youre giving it to healthy people, not sick people and there is an independent body. People have to take the vaccine to get to the mass immunity were talking about. Dr. Sanjay gupta and andy slavitt, thank you. Now to the aftermath of Hurricane Sally, still drenching georgia and the carolinas right now. Up to a foot of rain is forecast today. And you are looking at live pictures from a drone above the catastrophic flooding caused by the hurricane. This is in gulf shores, alabama. Thats where sally made landfall yesterday morning. The storm surge and torrential rain has much of this coastal city under water. The worst flooding may be in pensacola, florida, where sally dumped two feet of rain in just four hours. Cnns rosa flores has more. Tell us what it looks around you, rosa. Reporter alisyn, good morning. The water has receded but the signs of the force of Hurricane Sally are all around me. Let me show you around because youll see that the blacktop on this road peeled away and its stacked up like a layered cake. Behind that, youll see that theres still some ponding. Theres still some debris and some cars underwater. Officials here were telling me that there was so much water that soaked this area that the trees normally during a hurricane we see how the branches just snap and you can see all around here the trees are not completely snapped. The roots are uprooted, which is different. We normally dont see that. Beyond that youll also see that a boat went ashore. Now, there were very dramatic moments at the height of this hurricane. I talked to commissioner robert bender. He is a commissioner here and he said that the officials were watching this crane, this barge that had a crane that hit the three mile bridge. Now, locals call it the three mill bridge and it connects pensacola where i am to gulf breeze. Well, that barge hit the three mile bridge, removed a piece of that bridge and then headed towards the i10 bridge. So that is the main thoroughfare if you have ever been to pensacola, you have probably been on that interstate. Officials said there were dramatic moments because the barge was headed straight to i10 about a half mile before that the barge went aground and then the u. S. Coast guard was called in and was able to secure that barge. But, alisyn, a lot of tense moments. We have talked to folks here who say they didnt think it was going to be as bad and then they started experiencing the bands and the rain. I should add that Governor Ron Desantis is expected to survey the damage and to help whoever needs help in this area impacted by Hurricane Sally. Rosa flores, thank you very much for being on the ground for us. So attorney general bill barr that stay at home orders to keep people safe during the pandemic are akin to slavery. Developing this morning, to be clear there was no National Coronavirus lockdown. Thats just one thing wrong with what the attorney general william barr says here. Listen to this. You know, putting a National Lockdown, stay at home orders, is like house arrest. Its its you know, other than slavery which was a different kind of restraint, this is the greatest intrusion on Civil Liberties in american history. Joining me now is House Majority whip, James Clyburn of South Carolina. Thanks so much for being with us. As i said there was no National Lockdown but even comparing some of the state restrictions for coronavirus to human bondage, whats your reaction to that . Well, thank you very much for having me. I think that statement was the most ridiculous tone deaf, god awful things i have ever heard. It is incredible the chief Law Enforcement officer in this country equate human bondage to expert advice to save lives. Slavery was not about saving lives, it was about devaluing lives. This pandemic is a threat to human life. I mean, experts, the medical experts, the scientists are telling us what it takes to respond successfully to this pandemic. And if this administration this god awful duo of trump and barr are going about the business of doing what is necessary to protect the people of this great country, we would be beyond this pandemic by now. Those countries that did it they are beyond it. Those of us who ignored it, it would be great it would have been great if we had a National Lockdown so that peoples lives would be saved and our children would be going on with their lives today as they should be. But that is just what were up against here. Two people in charge of running the Law Enforcement of this country absolutely tone deaf to what it takes to be great leaders. Theyre driving this country into a direction no one thought wed ever see. Theres many places in the world seeing a resurgence of the coronavirus cases no matter what actions they took. I want to ask you youre leading the House Committee leading the coronavirus and youre launching an invest into mike caputo, whether or not he was using pressure to alter the scientific reports. What have you found largely speaking about political influence on this . Were troubled by what were finding, i wont get into the specifics because were doing the investigation. I dont want to be out in front of my staff but let mow say this. Im very troubled by what the administration is doing and many of the people who are mouthing this foolishness. And even the president himself. This is just a bit much for the country to take. But the investigations are ongoing and i put an s on investigations because there are several that are taking place and several need to take place because they are on many fronts doing stuff that put the lives and livelihoods of the American People at great risk. I want to ask you about the status of Coronavirus Relief in the house of representatives now. A group of a Bipartisan Group known as the Problem Solver caucus and the president said hes in favor of a higher end and spending much higher than republicans in the senate are. So what hope do you have this morning that you may be able to sit down and negotiate an agreement . Well, as you know, i grew up in the parsonage and i grew its the deeds, not their words that we should be guided by. So im waiting for the 39 im waiting for the president to put forth some deeds, tell the leadership of the senate, because Mitch Mcconnell has told us that hes not going to put anything on the floor unless its got the support of the president. So tell him what it is that you support. Not these generalities about a high end number. Give him the number and give him how you ought to spend or allocate the numbers and then lets go forward. The Problem Solvers, theyre doing good work. Im pleased to see that they are really improving upon their initial proposals. Now, remember the Problem Solvers is bipartisan. Almost 50 50. Democrats and republicans. I think about 21 to 22 on either side so its a bipartisan approach. So this president should follow what is taking place with them and i think theyre getting close to what is a realistic number. Well, what about nancy pelosi, the speaker of the house . Should she also listen to the Problem Solvers here because she doesnt appear to be in discussions at this point. Thats not true, she is absolutely listening to them. They are part of our caucus and she talks with them. She hasnt met with them. I know she has and we discussed the meetings. So sure, shes listening to them. But just because youre listening doesnt mean you are capitulating. She knows exactly what we need to do and i support the proposal shes laid out and thats why i think the Problem Solvers are getting closer to where we need to be. I dont think theyre there yet. Can i ask about a parochial concern and thats the state of South Carolina. You may be the most influential democratic politician in South Carolina, at least right now. Theres a senate race in South Carolina, lindsey graham, running for reelection and theres a brandnew poll which shows the race neck and neck. Do you believe it . What do you think going to happen here . Yes, the race is neck and neck. And i do believe that Jamie Harrison will be on november the 4th the biggest one of the biggest political surprises this country has ever seen. Jamie has a great story. I met him when he was an 11th grader. He has been in my life ever since and he has been in the lives of the people of South Carolina ever since as well. Hes a young man who has his feet squarely planted in South Carolina soil. He loves the people of his great state. He went away to school, yale university. And when he graduated from yale, he came back and taught school there at the high school where he grew up. He gave back to his grandparents, went to work. Bought his grandparents a house. Symbolic of the fact that the shyster had taken the trailer home that his grandparents owned away from them unfairly. This is the kind of guy he is and the people of South Carolina are finding that out and theyre responding to him in such a way that i think its going to be a surprise to the country and it will be a great honor to the people of South Carolina, i think, for him to represent them. Im glad to hear youre not holding yale against him too much. Congressman James Clyburn, thanks so much for being with us this morning and we do appreciate your. Thank you. Smoke from wildfires on the west coast drifting more than 5,000 miles away to europe. The firefighters are still battling nearly 80 fires. Cnns Stephanie Elam is live with more. Whats the situation there, stephanie . Reporter its incredible, alisyn. Even at the International Space station they can see the smoke from all of the wildfires on the west coast. Those 79 fires burning in ten western states including idaho, oregon, california, having the most with 22. Im at the bobcat fire which you can see is still burning here behind me. Burning more than 46,000 acres. Still at 3 containment at last update here. But the good news is that neighborhood where i was yesterday they were able to save that. Theyre mopping it up now, but overnight there was another neighborhood back behind that did get an evacuation order. Just to give you an idea of what it is like here this is the situation here in california. In oregon, they are still looking for people. We do know that there are eight people that have been confirmed dead, but 12 more that are missing. Youre talking about fires that have destroyed more than a thousand structures and burned close to 1 million acres in the state. Overall from all of this that we have seen, 4. 3 million acres burned in the western wildfires. If you talk about a traditional fire season that we are seeing here this is the early start of it. When you look at that, including in oregon, this is a devastating fire season, alisyn. It sure is. Thank you very much. Among the missing in oregon, 72yearold george atiyeh. He has not been heard from since september 7th. His home and shop burned down near the town of lyon but he was not in it. Hes the nephew of the former governor Victor Atiyeh and a wellknown environmental activist who saved the opal creek wilderness. Joining us is georges long term friend scott fogerty. Thank you for being with us, and i know this is a stressful time for you and all of georges friends. Just take me back. I know you have been Close Friends for 23 years. Your kids call him uncle george. Whens the last time you spoke with him . Last time i spoke to him was last friday, september 5th. I guess that would be two fridays ago, september 5th. And when you spoke to him, did you urge him to leave his home . Did you know how bad the situation was getting there . Well, at that point in time the fire was relatively small. It was probably about 100 to 300 acres big and it had been burning since mid august and hadnt grown that much. So, you know, we talked about what we thought about that and whether how close he thought he was getting but it was pretty far away. It was almost 20 to 30 miles away from him. So while he was concerned, he wasnt concerned to the point, of, you know, being ready to flee the scene, if you will. And you know, fires occur in the wilderness quite often so everybody who lives in the area is ready to evacuate if need be. So i think at that point in time he wasnt as concerned about it. Another friend spoke to him a couple of days after you did on i believe september 7th, and he that friend did urge him to leave, it was getting worse and george said he didnt want to leave and that he wanted to stay i guess in his home. Then what happened, the sheriffs deputies realized how bad it was getting in that area where george lived and they rushed, door to door, to try to get everybody out and when they got to georges he wasnt there. As though he had already left. Maybe on foot, maybe he went somewhere. So they couldnt find him and now his home actually did burn down and they havent found any trace of him and so what do you think happened to george . Well, im holding out a sliver of hope that he went down to the river. He lives right on the river itself. We had spoken several times over the past, you know, 20 years about what to do in in case of a catastrophic fire and heading to the river, hunkering down until it passes over is typically the last grasp, if you will, on getting away from a fire. There are several areas near his home that are easily accessed and so im hoping that, you know, hes sitting in the river still or hes on a rock next to the river with his shirt over his face for smoke or whatever and, you know, the oxygen level next to the river remains fairly good during a fire. So im hopeful that thats what he did especially since folks came to his house and he wasnt there. So that would be what i think would be the first thing he would do is go down to the ri r river. Heres the picture thank you you took, this is where he said hed be in case of a fire, he would go and retreat here, as you said, to the river. But is that area accessible . Has anyone checked there for him . That i dont know. I believe they attempted to get down to the river but it was blocked by fallen trees and at the time when i spoke to the folks who are going to look for him, they said that there was still spot fires happening in the canyon and i believe there are still there are some spot fires happening now. So, yes, the picture i sent is adjacent directly adjacent to his home. There are deep pools in it and there are also some shallow areas where the trees do not come directly down to the river. So in my minds eye, hes potentially sitting on one of those shelves, those benches in the water, the natural rock benches in the water and hopefully, you know, hes going to be able to either head down river at some point or once the fire subsides completely hell be able to walk up out of there. Thats my hope. Of course. Lets pray that your minds eye is whats actually happening. I mean, ill just end on this. You said hes a survivor. He survived a plane crash early in his life that nearly killed him. If somebody can survive he might know how to. But scott fogerty, were thinking of you and all of his friends. Please keep us posted if you hear anything. Sure, thank you so much. I really appreciate it. Thanks for being with us. We have a new snapshot on americas unemployment crisis. You have to stick around through the commercial break to know what it is. Im glad its clear to somebody. David axelrod, hes going to tell us right after this. Im making sandwiches on kings hawaiian bread yum kings hawaiian. All right. Just hours from now joe biden will take questions from voters at a town hall event in pennsylvania right here at 8 00 p. M. At the white house, while talking about coronavirus, what he tried to do is somehow suggest that the deaths in the United States can be separated into blue states and red states. Listen. Despite the fact that the blue states had tremendous death rates. If you take the blue states out, were at a level that i dont think anybody in the world would be at. Were really at a very low level. You werent even more less dead if youre in a blue or a red state or any more or less american. Lets get to the bottom with david axelrod, Senior Adviser to president obama and on the obama campaign. What did you make of that statement . I think it was a true reflex of his view of the presidency and the country. He views himself as president of the red states and as president of his base. And feels no responsibility to people as american citizens. So it was shocking. Its not even true, because theres been quite a bit of loss and death and illness among red states as well as we know. But i think more than anything it was so revealing about how he views america and he views it through the prism of his own selfview. If you dont support me i wont. And the truth is he hasnt served the red states very well. He gave them misleading information about this virus and it led to unnecessary illness and death. As we were told at the beginning of the program the ten states with the highest death rates, five are blue, five are red. But he only wants to support the red states so that brings us to his reelection strategy. This week he tried something different. He did a town hall on abc where real voters confronted him with their questions about the places that they thought that he had failed them. And, you know, it didnt go that well. Certainly didnt go as well as the fox friends appearance or a hannity appearance. So what do you think his reelection strategy is at this point . Well, first of all, let me say about that, that its good that the president submitted himself to those questions. He doesnt do it very often. He doesnt stray from the safety and cocoon of fox news too often. So its good that he its good that he did that. Look, i think his strategy is very clear and thats to impose his version of facts, events and reality on this campaign through sheer repetition and force. And, you know, we saw even the attorney general is out there in full political apparatchik mode and amplifying on the president s political message, so and if you stray, you saw what happened to dr. Redfield when he imparted his professional advice and his professional you know, insights to the Congressional Committee yesterday. He immediately was rebuked because everyone is supposed to be pulling on the oars of the president s reelection, even if you have responsibility for overseeing our response to this pandemic. Look, it is interesting what you say. William barr, President Trump, michael caputo, their messages are all more or less the same thing, its on the same continuum here which is that the science and the scientists dont have it right, but i do. President s can always set the agenda, President Trump has a real political skill which is framing a discussion. However, i do wonder now if his framing of this discussion this week about coronavirus is really helping him by making it a me versus science thing. I dont understand how that wins you suburban voters. No, it doesnt. He has a different strategy for suburban voters and that is to play a fear card with suburban voters to suggest that, you know, rioters and people of color are going to be knocking at their door if he doesnt get reelected. You know, i totally agree with you. I have said from the beginning you can spin a lot of things you cant spin a pandemic because people are living the reality of the pandemic. Although, you know, barr said last night that the that stay at home directives were the greatest intrusion on personal liberties since slavery which is offensive on so many different levels.
