Work. They are preparing to disclose some portion of the Mueller Report. Some portion but we dont know what exactly. Lets talk about what these past two years having like. At one point he eluded to a mueller crime family on an episode that the president promoted. So when people claim trump did not interfere in the Mueller Probe remember whether was happening every single night, attack after attack after attack. At the same time mueller was capped as a saint and a savior. Last christmas saying all i wan for christmas is you, mueller. It is so easy to subscribe to either of those. So easy to subscribe with the click of a renomote. It is so hard to tune out the partisan ship and tune into the news. Right now theres not much actual news to report. We are standing by. Camera crews are outside waiting for information. We are here talking, talks, standing by for news. Im a defender of this cable talk show model. Our phones alert us to the news. Cable is more like a rolling talk show letting people be a part of the daily debate ability how our country should be governed and how our world should work. Some are really smart. The bad thing is when folks mix up the talk with the news. Some times we let it get too blurries parking l blurries they are claiming it vindicates all of their prior positions. They are saying it was wrong all along. Donald trump tweeting out collusion truthers accusing the press of pushing a narrative against his dad. He is making a rookie mistake. Muellers assignment was to get to the truth about russian interference. Did many allege collusion . Yes. Did many journalists ask about it . Yes. There is a giant difference between asking and telling. The job of the nations news media is to ask, to question all sides to scrutinize and report on opposing points of view and only take the side of truth and decency. Someone should tell jessie waters that. I feel like this delivers a knockout blow to the press and democrats saying collusion, collusion, collusion for the last two years. Why dont you take his blinders off off. Some have invested in an anti trump narrative. It is our wild media world. The president s kids and friends on fox should be able to tell the difference between journalists trying to report. There is a big difference. There is a big difference between news and opinion. I realize it can be hard to tnen out all of the news. I would pick solid reporting in a second. I bet you would too. Reporting is what adds the most value. Finding out something new, putting out new information into the world is the best feeling in journalism. It is the greatest value add. Hundreds have been trying to solve pieces of this trumprussia puzzle. Speculation has value too. It helps open our eyes and our minds to whats possible. Its an easy punch line, right . We are standing by to find out what the news is going to be. It does have value too. It gives us a place to go, a place to turn to. I rearranged my plan so i can be close to a tv all day today with the hope that we are going to get some news from barr by the end of the day. This country needs to know what he found and what he didnt find. I think all what we need to make sure our tuners work so we can distinguish what is true and news versus what is wishful thinking, speculation, opinion. So dont be fooled by the partisans who cherry picked the worst mistakesover individual journalists or the craziest ideas and claim thats the entire media. Its not. We are waiting for the facts. Here is what i know. Youre going to hear it from the right for the next days and weeks to come. It is to take down President Trump. The president is following a trail that trump created. He has proven time and time again he cannot be trusted. He is so dishonest even americas allies dont know what to believe. He is unpredictable they dont know what to say or how to respond. Thats the crucial context for whatever comes next. Maybe every time he said no collusion more than 231 times so far, maybe every time he said no collusion he was telling the truth. Maybe thats what mueller found. If so it would be a relief of the country. Trumps daily sdeceptions have given reasons to be suspicious. Thats why theres so much noise. Reporters dont ask questions for no good reason. Lets hope Real Research and real reporting can lead us out of this. The name mueller has come to mean a lotov of things. Hopefully it means truth. We think the rest of probably the majority have done a good jobov of it. The press has done one of the great reporting jobs in the history especially covering a presidency in the most news organizations. We need to see the full Mueller Report, every word of it to get all of the context which is an important element of journalism. We need to know everything. The American People need to know everything. This is about donald trump there a larger sense. We are going to find out, i have confidence we are going to find out. If it turns out there was a lot of smoke but no fire is that a failure to focus so much . First of all i think there has been plenty of fire regardless of whether or not theres a finding, of whether or not donald trump is guilty of a crime. Remember, im in the Justice Department guidelines. He cannot be found guilty. So thats why we need these under dp underlying facts. Perhaps mueller findings and his investigation will tell us, has there been an explanation for why he has done putins business. Is he a tool perhaps the Mueller Report will give us incite into that. It is all part of the same story. We can be patient for another hour or two hours or even a couple of weeks to find out whats there. You know, we went back and looked at some of the headlines in the past about Mueller Report. These are all headlines from last year. We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. I wonder what it has been like personally for reporters there to be in the middle trying to get to the bottom of the story. I think every new and recent things are coming to an end. Muellers team locked down so tight. Thats probably why it is easy to see him as the hero or hit man. If youre on the left or right it is not speaking. So you project on him what you want. For reporters, look, you had a situation where there was enough evidence or enough indications of strange contacts to get a federal investigation going into the president and people around him. This investigation was launched before it was elected but they continued an amplified. The press is not that. We cant say that. Its a big deal under any circumstances. I think now, you know, weare going to find out. We are going to find out maybe there was no collusion. Theres no direct vibration. But we have to see whats there there. We dont know. He said the news that mueller is heading home without issuing new charges is a flow for the reputation of the American News media. What is your reaction . That is what we do. Dont think its a death flow for the interest of the american media. There were plenty of stories that suggested there may not be a collusion. There were stories my colleagues wrote on the left, a story about rosenstein. Considered wiretapping when you saw the president. It is stories from the left as well. I think moments like this its convenient to cherry pick what you want to see here. On the idea here that theres been so much coverage. The volume has given people an impression that Something Big has happened. The volume is justified. The big question, what is news . This investigation and conduct and behavior is the biggest story we have had in many years. His behavior, its different than any other president he says and does things that no other president has done and no other has been suggested, colluded to use that and we are going to find out what the underlying facts are. And lets go to first of all there has been such fabulous reporting by especially the new york times, the Washington Post, the wall street journal. In cable tlg been great reporter r reporting. I want to stop on the wall street journal. Posts have been great. And the mur dock stories. Why is it so important . Because it is owned by mur dodo . We know more about donald trump and this investigation because of the wall street journal and the right wing, the blind following, im not saying theres plenty of room for people to support donald trump. The idea of launching that those people and republicans ought to take a look at what the wall street journals reporting has been. It has been in keeping with what we reported on cnn, what is Washington Post reported, what matt reported. It is exemplary. It ought to be stressed over and over and over again that the same owner of fox news published these stories in his paper. I think we should keep looking at that question. Thank you for being here. Sure enough those sourtss were right that this news was about to break. Has hype been an overdrive . I think we should remember lead to believe that perhaps the Mueller Report too inclined to believe sources when it came to figuring out when mueller was going to drop this report. Reporters have been responsible. I think its important folks that are speculating versus reporting, its an ongoing problem for the news media. Its true. Its a problem in this moment. It is a moment that is so polarized. It drives us this eco system where there is huge reward to take a protrump position or antitrump position. It bleeds into this which airs on tv and sits in the editorial pages of newspapers. That blurs the line of what the media is saying. I think in this moment in particular its problematic. And to his point i also think its kind of a problem where the right is claiming certain things are partisan. Its not partisan to say there are continuing investigations in the Southern District of new york. If you bring that up now you see people on the right saying thats liberals trying to save face and trying to make it seem like it wasnt humiliating. They are saying youre moving the goal postment you. We are trying to cover the game. Journalists are trying to keep up with all of the action on the field. I think because it is so complicated it makes it easy for either side to claim that the other side is doing something wrong. It is by trying to make sense of all of this. And on both the left and right we are seeing more Conspiracy Theory behaivior. One saying that the immediate is trying to take down trump. Take a look. This is the great scandal in American History and i mean it. It is media gate. It feels like the seeds of a coverup are here. Im not sure either of those talking points are helpful for our national discourt. It is very ir ri response financial for these people. They are going out there and delivering this. They should be waiting until the barr report comes out. They should be waiting for the facts. They are going out there and aiming to undermine the Mueller Report. Well try to keep it going forever. Lets put on screen a few of the things trump said about President Trump this week. I think what he is suggesting a different way. Thats the way i read these tweets. Do you think the press cares too much about this . No. I think its very interesting. If it were happening in any administration it would be a major story. I think it is remarkable that given all of stories that we have the capacity to cover this as well. I think that we it proves we can multitask. It is remarkable that somebody who is married to Senior Adviser is making these kind of statements going further than many of the statements other critics that have plalt pl platforms. I dont know if he has chosen this but he is posting so often and trying to force a conversation about Mental Health really. And the people who are saying do not cover this. You cannot cover this. These are the same people obsessed with Hillary Clintons health. Imagine fa they had a spouse saying she is sick. She is crazy. It would be the top story forever. I think right now you see people like Elizabeth Warren who are having very substantive policy discussions and, you know, rolling out concrete policy proposals like down in mississippi and rolled out an in depth and not seeing someone like him being real sweaty. Thats not something that i think, you know, female candidates are experiencing. Cue the video of them jumping on the table. There has been a lot of this. There has been a lot of attention around this. You think its a distraction . If a woman tried to do this it wouldnt be celebrated this way. No. It wouldnt be celebrated this way at all we are experiencing absolute crises when we talk about our housing and Climate Change and you have Elizabeth Warren leading the policy discussion. The news media doesnt seem to be picking that up. Arent they always important in the snow and was a visual. Beto on was a visual. All you to do is put a woman in betos position to see how impossible it would be. Imagine a woman jumping on a counter and crouching down taking a road trip saying she takes care of her kids some of the time. She was born to do this. That woman would not be taken seriously. He has been criticized. Yes. He has been given around the clock coverage. Its not about the amount its about the quality. Warren has the most sub substantiate ifr policy proposals out there. Thats regularly seen as a liability for her. People talk about her school and her like blt. Millions of people like her. She is plenty likable. I liked everything i saw this week. No one suggested that his ability to learn nor wwegian we january which is the first thing that happens. We have a huge opportunity this year because multiple men are running and multiple women are running to correct some of this stuff. Youre saying to some of the stuff that might think being a woman is an advantage youre saying not so much. Before we can suggest it might be the case we have to see how being a woman in the field is an advantage. We have never seen that in 200 years of history in america. We are going to be need to tie that a long way the other way before we can say being a white plan could possibly be a detriment. And youre talking about the policy issues need to continue to drag the conversation back to policy. Do you have any practical thoughts on how to do that . It is to find ways to put a spotlight on what they are saying even if you have to jump on a table. The candidates have to find ways to encourage that News Coverage dont they . They do. To kind of shift it to policy you have warren going down to mississippi but you also have Bernie Sanders out in california on a saturday night pull out 22,000 people. I think we have to start covering excitement, right that have really excite about people like warren and sanders. As much as it is, you know, we are seeing this sexist dynamic its about the movement. But the amount of people have shown up, there are a lot of energy. That is a news story . Yes. I think Social Security obvious they are gravitating. The majority of president ial contenders are luning on things like a green new deal. It is important to mention in the context of beto, the media has been covering him consistently since november of 2018 when he decided to go on the journey that you mentioned. And producers suspect theres Something Special here . And yeah. Why didnt we do that for abrams who did far better in their races and are doing more for the movement staying in their states and billing power . They are seeing that the longterm Movement Matters in terps of impacting the lives of every day americans. I couldnt agree more. I think it can often be really subjective we never saw that kind of coverage so she wound occupy getting three more. M millions were excited. It simply wasnt covered that way. I think right after the governor signed this bill, senator bill 1421, this is a huge change in Police Transparency laws in california. Me and one of my colleagues were talking about what was our obligation to get records and report on them for our audience. There was no other answer than we needed to get all the records. We started to reach out with other public Media Partners that we worked with on other projects and it grew from there. Weve been working very closely with the bay area news group. Its amazing to see all these news organizations working together to truly serve the public. Is this the future . Will we see more of this across the country . I think certainly within california that this kind of collaboration makes great sense. If the issues are right such as Climate Change, you can imagine a number of news organizations coming together and pooling their reporting. Is it happening more out of strength or weakness . I look at some of these news rooms, they suffered cuts over the years. Do they have to Work Together because theres no other choice . The cuts are real. The bigger problem here is with over 700 mu nis palties theres a lot of police organizations. Tlheres been amazing headlines. The l. A. Times reported the Inglewood Police department destroyed records that otherwise would have been public. This is what youre exposing . Thats correct. We have it on many fronts. We also had Great Success including stories that appeared across the state this week. What comes next . Theres a pending lawsuit against the state a. G. In order to gain what . The state attorney general said we put in a request along with other reporters for the records that the department of justice holds. The attorney general said the law hasnt been totally defined on this. The unions are suing saying that the law should not apply retro actively before january 1st when the law went into effect. We dont agree with that reading of the law. The bills author herself said that she intended for the bill to apply retro actively. So the attorney general said were not going to give you any records until this issue is resolved. Kqed joined a suit saying dont think you can delay indefinitely while these lawsuits play out. Basically make a decision. So we need more sunlight. We have about 30 seconds left. If other news rooms were interested in this c collaboration, what advice do you give them . The main thing you have to recommend is the issues are about serving the public. If you begin by thinking about what the audience needs, then collaboration comes together quickly.
