These days, anyone can be a publisher through social media, but the professional press, shows like this one, websites and magazines still set the national and global conversation. So in my humble view, we should be advocating, not for a particular politician or party, but advocating for a safe, healthy, wellinformed public. We can do that by centering coverage of this pandemic not around politicians. But around their voters. We can focus on the bottomup. Cover this story from the bottom up. We have to push elected officials to see what lockdown life is really like. Look at todays front page of the santa fe new mexican. It profiles the owner of joes diner. The profile says barely hanging on. In lancaster, pennsylvania, don mur phy saying will restaurants recover . These are all examples of elevating the storie of real people, businessmen, entrepreneurs, workers, nurses and doctors, uber drivers and engineers, elevating their voices. Thats the power of the press. We help facilitate a conversation with each other. Helping folks be heard. Like in chicago. Look at this headheadline. It quotes hospital workers saying theyre outgunned, outmanned and underfunded. Their voices are so important. Lets exemplify them over the politicians. Theyre why we need some of this, the Los Angeles Times front page. The crisis turns critical. A second story also documenting the trump administrations failures to meet this moment early on. Then the third story about schools becoming pantries for hungry families. All these stories are related. I know the White House Briefings seem disconnected from reality. The president doesnt seem to acknowledge the rising death toll. He doesnt seem to understand the problems of the voters i was just talking about. When that happen, the press has to point it out, fact check it and advocate for the needs of the public. I dont know about you, but im starting to get frustrated, angry, and its a time for that passion. Its a time for journalists to channel the publics anger, frustration and fear and show some of that outrage on the publics behalf. In fact, sometimes those are the best moments for journalism. Piers morgan knows a thing or two about that. Let me bring him in. You know him from his days anchoring here on cnn. Hes currently the cohost of Good Morning Britain and the editor at large of daily mail. Com. I know this is one of your first times being back on cnn since your Program Ended back in 2014. Welcome. Thank you for joining me today. Thank you very much, brian. Good to be here. You have been doing something remarkable, interviewing british politicians and leaders and lawmakers and Health Officials and holding their feet to the fire. And in some cases showing how many failures are happening not just in the United States but in the united kingdom. What are the parallels now between the u. S. And uk responses to the pandemic . I think theyre very similar, brian, in the since that you have two populous leaders in Boris Johnson and donald trump. All the tricks that they used to become popular and to win elections, to lead their countries are now being tested in a very different way. Its not about partisan politics anymore, its about plain war crisis leadership. Its a very different thing. What ive noticed with Boris Johnson and with donald trump is an apparent inability to segue into being war leaders. Theyre still playing the old games of party politics. Donald trump in particular, ive known him a long time. I consider him to be a friend, but ive been watching these daily briefings with mounting horror, frankly, because this is not what the president should be doing. You wont like me saying this, but the president of the United States is an incredibly important person in the world. Not least to americans who are dying in the tens of thousands from a disease that we dont know much about yet. And all that is required from the president in those moments and any world leader, frankly, they have to be calm, show authority, they have to be honest, they have to be accurate, entirely factual with what theyre telling the people and they have to have an ability to show empathy. On almost every level of that donald trump at the moment is failing the American People. Hes turning these briefings into a selfaggrandizing, self justifying, overly defensive politically partisan almost like a rally to him. Almost like whats more important is winning the election in november. No, its not, donald trump. Whats important now is saving american lives. I believe that the complacency that the american and british administrations have shown in the first few weeks of this crisis has been extremely damaging to both countries ability to deal with coronavirus, but its not too late for them to get a grip and actually make the attack on the virus their number one priority. Not pumping themselves up. Not telling us all day what a great job theyre doing. But actually focusing on what matters. And that is human life. But, you know, you mentioned your relationship with President Trump. You were on the Celebrity Apprentice you won one of the seasons, you interviewed the president repeatedly. Pretty much whenever he visits great britain, youre sitting down with him there. Given your relationship with him, what do you think has caused this reaction from the president or these failures from the president . I think he thinks its just another thing to deal with, rather than the most unprecedented crisis of our lifetime, most unprecedented since world war ii. It requires a different skillset. If you look around the world, other World Leaders who got on top of this, also won populous support, its people like new zealand, chancellor merkel in germany, even Emmanuel Macron last week was very candid with the french people. He was very honest. He said, look, we dont really know when this will end. It will be tough. He implemented tough lockdowns but he also conceded they were too slow on personal protective equipment for Health Workers, they were too slow in other areas, on ventilators and so on. It says something from a candidate and a leader in a war that goes down with the public. Macron has never been more popular, nor has chancellor merkel. Donald trumps ratings are fallen and the reason for that is he needs to understand this theyre falling because people dont trust him. Hes turning these briefings into selfserving rallies, i dont understand why he cant do the basics of crisis leadership, which is to make the public come with you, lead you, and show them the empathy that they need when so many people are dying. Do you think you say its not too late. It feels pretty late to me. You think the president can turn it around . Trump it current it around . I guess ill stop pretending he has total authority. It was a staggering moment when your Kaitlan Collins last week had to remind the president of the United States he doesnt have total authority. He doesnt have ultimate power over all these state governors. I think what needs to happen what should have happened from the start is a global effort in america from all the states, all the governors and the federal government to come together and work as one and show a unified front, stop this ridiculous nonsense right now with trump singling out various democratrun states for political reasons connected to the election. The it doesnt matter. I dont care about the election. Nobody should care about the election. Donald trump, if hes listening to this or watching, you will win the election in november if you get this right. If you stop making it about yourself and make it about the American People and show that you care about them over yourself, you will win. Conversely, you will lose the election in november if you continue to make it about yourself, you continue playing politics, continue targeting democrat governors because that suits you for your electoral purposes. None of that matters. Until donald Trump Realizes that again, he doesnt want to hear it, but he may as well hear it from me until you realize that, mr. President , you will not get this right. If you dont get it right, more americans will die. Are you risking your friendship with the president by calling him out . I saw your recent clunl folumn e daily mail which said america doesnt want a king trump. He does still follow you. Youre one of the few people that the president of the United States follows on twitter. How do you view this relati relationship now . Is this still a friendship with him. Ive always tried to be candid with him. Ive written about 100 columns on President Trump. I would say its about 50 50. 50 positive, 50 critical. I try to be fair about him. Hes not my president. Hes a president i look at from afar here in the uk. But i try to be balanced and fair, notwithstanding the fact we have a friendship. Right now i dont really care about the niceties of whether donald trump is going to be offended by what im saying. He has to put the country before himself. He has to put americans before electioneering. He has to remind himself every day what can i do today to prevent more lives being killed . Not how can i score more petty points and try to stand here for two hours with people like dr. Fauci waiting to do their work, which will actually save lives, and try to have arguments with the media who are actually trying to do their job, which is holding the government to account. Exactly as they should be doing. Donald trump should not take that personally, he should use the criticism from the media to ask himself every day am i doing the right thing . Am i doing enough . Thats his job. Its time to really hold these Public Officials accountable in interviews, press conferences, however we can given how many failures have happened not just on the federal level but on the state and local level as well. Tell me about how you have been trying to do that on your program on itv. Well, we have had a lot of cabinet ministers coming on. Theres been an extraordinary situation, of course, in the uk because the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, got coronavirus, he got it three weeks after boasting that he had been to a hospital where he had shaken as many hands as possible, and the hospital had people with coronavirus. Surprisesurprise, the Prime Minister who took this so casually then got the virus himself and became critically ill and nearly died. He was saved by the power of the Health Workers. The very same Health Workers that weve now seen lose their lives in this country and, indeed, in america for lack of personal protective equipment. I hope that focuses Boris Johnsons mind on what is required here. But on a wider point, because hes not been there to lead the country, weve had to interview people like the health secretary, matt hancock, and other ministers and hold their feet to the fire about so many things that the British Government have been doing, which are quite, actually, reminiscent of whats happening in america, but which have been failing on almost every level. A file youre to really take this seriously soon enough from the end of january they should have been all over this, they werent. Boris johnson only chaired the cobra committee, the most Important Committee in British Government at the start of march on this. Weve been behind on ppe, behind woefully on testing. Its frankly scandalous, brian. Never mind anything else, but the fact that the uk and the u. S. Are two of the worst performing countries in the world on tests per million of population is a disgrace. And it shames america, it shames britain, it shames every one involved in this. But like i said at the start, its not too late. You have to ramp up the testing. The only way that donald trump can actually reopen america for business in the same way that Boris Johnson wants to do in the uk, you have to test enough of the population with an Accurate Enough test that you can then have confidence of putting them back into the populous. And that is why the testing is so crucial. And that is why its been such a damming indictment of both governments that theyve been so slow to ramp up the testing to the levels that we saw were happening in countries like china and in south korea that didnt happen in italy. So the italian doctors were screaming at america and britain, for goodness sake, ramp up the testing. If you dont do that, if you dont lock down your cities, then youll have the same problem were having. Well, america and britain looked at what was happening in italy and they basically put their fingers in their ears and their hands over their eyes and thought to themselves it cant be that bad here. It is that bad. In fact, its worse now in america and britain than it was in italy. Thats because the governments did not get their act together. My message to both of them, to Boris Johnson, to donald trump, is get your act together now. Put all the normal stuff that got you elected, all the jokey stuff, the wise cracking, the punching of opponents, all that stuff is irrelevant. It doesnt matter. Bring your countries together, bring the best medical, scientific minds, the best political minds, the best military minds, bring them together, unite the country and fight the war. Remember this, for once, were all on the same side. This is a war between human beings and the virus of covid19. Were in this together. So lets act like it. Appreciate your flashes of anger about this. It reminds me postkatrina in the United States. The Great Recession in 2000. These failures of government demand journalistic accountability and frankly sometimes anger to channel the publics frustration and anger. What is your advice for journalists navigating this . Do your jobs. Never has there been a more important time to be a journalist. Hold your governments to account. Nothing that has come before this matters. This is the big one. This will be the biggest story of every journalists life. We thought 9 11, we would never see that again or the final crash. But this is much bigger than all of that. In terms of the Global Impact on every single country in the world, this is it. This is what journalists are supposed to be about, about getting to a truth, Holding Governments to account and making sure they make right decisions. If we do our jobs properly, if we challenge every single thing that these governments do in britain, in america, in france, in germany, all around the world, if germans do their job, they will hope those governments make better decisions. This is like i said before, were all in this together. Were all on the same side. Its not about whether youre republican or democrat or conservative or labour or whatever Political Party youre affiliated to, creed or anything. None of that matters. Its all about unity and the way germans can do their job is to stand tall, work together, dig, dig, dig and get to the truth and then compel governments to be accountable. The decision is their taking, and to make sure they make the right ones. If the end, if journalists do that job properly government and World Leaders will thank the media. They will thank them for helping to save lives. Piers morgan, great to see you. Thank you for being here. Good to see you, brian. We have a lot more coming up including a conversation about the coronavirus culture war, why we are seeing on fox news promotion of protests plus this remarkable interview with dr. Anthony fauci and laura ingram, a full analysis with philip bump and Juliette Kayyem in just a moment. More than ever, your home is your sanctuary. Now to the coronavirus culture war, which shouldnt exist, those words shouldnt come out of my mouth, but its real, its happening and getting worse. Every day President Trump says Something Different about reopening the u. S. Economy. Every day that means reporters have to point out it is more complicated than he makes it sound. But the president s push in defiance of Public Health experts has a chorus of support from his cheerleaders on fox news. Some hosts there are leading the charge to prematurely reopen the country, so to speak, and promoting these protests that have been popping up at state capitals. Some seem like grassrootsests, some seem more artificial or corporate supported, but these protests are getting a lot of attention. Theyre getting a lot of attention in part because of the attention of fox news. Look, weve got to show the full sorry. When we cover these rallies protests against the stayathome orders, we should show them in proportion. We should show them in proportion of public view. The view of these protesters r. A distinct minority. The pew poll says the greatest concern is that government will lift restrictions too quickly. 1 in 3 americans are worried that it wont happen quickly enough. So lets talk about the fox news influence over the president and how that feedback loop is affecting the country. With me now is Juliette Kayyem and National Correspondent for the washington post, philip bump. Juliette, when you see those protesters what do you think . What do you see . I dont see this as a political fight, clearly this is a right wing or red state movement, but i see this as a Public Safety and Public Health issue. These people are not just having an opinion, theyre dangerous, they are selfcentered, they are making what all of us doing at home irrelevant because theyre continuing to provide sort of, you know, provide fuel for the virus. So i think that reporters, while it is a political story, need to make it clear also the extent to which these people are not just putting themselves at risk but putting me, you, your kids, my kids, everyone else at risk. The social distancing only works when the vast majority of people abide by it. Its exactly like vaccines. This is and theres no theres no politics to it. Its basic science at this stage. Fox hosts influencing the president s words and actions is nothing new, philip bump. Is there anything new about how its happening this time around . No, its sort of fascinating. A couple things are new around the edges, but fascinating to see how part of whats happened here is that fox news hosts were following Donald Trumps initial lead, downplaying the virus, which created this base within the Republican Party within republican fox news fans and trump ynews fans, who were skeptical of the virus any way. So it is sort of interesting how over the course of the past month fox news has gone full circle and set the stage where we are now we are seeing in this push to reopen as you said earlier, Everyone Wants to see this reopen, but the prothirds in the pew poll want to make sure we do so responsibly. The question is how fox news is pushing for that to happen. We saw this week on two different occasions they had dr. Oz and dr. Phil come on and poopoo the idea about making bad comparisons or downplaying the extent of the potential death toll. Those things are new in the moment and used in service to this broader idea that theres nothing big to worry about here. Lets listen to what donald trump is saying. Lets loosen things up. These fox talk shows are clearly valuing celebrity over credibility. Celebrity star power of dr. Phil, thats why laura ingram booked him. Then it was embarrassing for everybody. He was just a guest. Ill doubt hell be back. Well see about that. This is about scientific ignorance with life or death stakes. Fundamentally weve seen ignorance towards science from this administration for three years, but now its on a much bigger stage. Do you think these doctors at some point are hate to say it hazardous to Public Health . Yeah. Dont hate to say it. Theyre promoting a mythology about the virus. We will hit 42,000 dead today in the United States alone. These numbers in and of themselves are tragic. They are comparative to other countries embarrassing. We are so unprepared, so unwilling to do what we need to do. The list of things that repor r reporters and that are covered in this story including medical, pharmaceutical vaccines, diagnostics, contact tracing, ppe, the masks, social distancing, the personal behavior that well have to change and protecting vulnerable populations. Its complicated. We get it. But nonetheless, these are the only things that will work to at least adapt appropriately to a virus that is going to live with us for a long time. This is the unfortunate and sad truth of the next year, year and a half, two years or however long it takes to get a vaccine. So, when they make these simplistic notions, these doctors, its a question about opening or not opening, its the most sort of childish approach to something that will kill those who go out too soon and communities that open up too soon. What about the argument that we are seeing from some commentators, that the media is overhyping this. The media is causing hysteria. Theyre blaming the media for that. This is called look, ive been here before. Been there, done that. It is called the preparedness paradox. People like me who have been urging staying inside, people like the doctors, scientists, people who know about pandemics, they say do this because it will save lives. People do it as weve seen from the polling, the number of people inside, and therefore the numbers go down. We expected us to be told were overreacting, theres worse things in the world compared to the death thats occurring here, but it has a name, its called the preparedness paradox. You have to accept thats what these people do. When i drive by the refrigerated truck outside the hospital where my kids were born and i think about that truck, i know this is not hysteria. I do wonder what its like for folks in other parts of the country, other states where this is not a severe crisis today. The maybe theyre not seeing the same things im seeing. Then, of course, its a comment on the press to show it. Its important we show whats happening all across the country. Philip, do the protests remind you of the Tea Party Ten years ago . Harvard researchers looked at how fox covered the tea party. They said it promoted the movement early on. Are we now on day three of the same thing happening with these potentially dangerous protests against stayathome orders . Yeah. I dont think theres a mystery as to why President Trump is enthusiastic about the pro tests he amplified on friday, in virginia, minnesota, michigan, all states which he wants to win in november and all states with democratic governors. He understands this is a mobilization of people who support him. However, you know, however authentic that mobilization may be, he understands this is an amplification of the people who he wants to see energized at this moment. So, you know, from from the abstract perspective, one could see how that might be a conflict for him, but in practical terms he doesnt seem to be terribly conflicted, he embraced it. I do want to say, going back to the last question, i think we shouldnt put too much focus on the doctors. A responsible person, a responsible host of one of those shows would have as soon as dr. Phil compared this to car accidents, a responsible host would say this is not a fair comparison. So laura ingram failed in that case as well. One thing i liked about ingrams show that day, she had dr. Anthony fauci on. She asked him some questions which i thought were ignorant, its good to see fauci responding, trying to get the facts out there everywhere he possibly can. Thats a good thing. I need to take a break here. Thank you both. Quick break on reliable sources. So, farmers is reducing auto premiums by 25 , extending payment due dates, and expanding coverage for the delivery drivers who are carrying us through. And then well do the next thing, and the thing after that, until this is another thing weve seen and done. During this pandemic, new voices are emerging from a surprising place, perhaps. The White House Briefing room. I want to talk about the questioners. There are some new faces, new names rising to the top and Holding Power in that room to account almost daily. I dont know if you noticed, ive certainly noticed a number of young women correspondents from the Major Networks trying to challenge the president s lies and get information out of the public Health Officials who are at these briefings. Of course the president oftentimes reacts by criticizing or belittling these reporters, talking down to them. Weve seen all of these reality tvstyle confrontations. The important thing is the questions are being asked. The attempts are being made to get through to the president and to his aides with information on behalf of the American People. Let me get to two people at these briefings, Kaitlan Collins is with us, and francesca chambers is with us as well. Francesca, are the briefings different now that president is speaking almost every day at these press conferences and briefings . It had been some time before we had press conferences like were having now with the president. To your point about the interactions between the president and the press corps, i try to be respectful in the room of the president of the United States because the bottom line is, brian, that my job and other reporters job is there to get information and answers on behalf of people who cant be in the room including health care workers, first responders, and people in the community and also people who are sick. Theres been these remarkable moments. Paula reid had some, kaitlan, youve had them. Theres been a number of moments where the president has to be challenged what to be confronted with the ugly reality. Im thinking about a moment earlier this week where paula reid said what about february . Youre talking about your response to the pandemic, but what about the entire month of february . What are the most important exchanges, kaitlan, you think the press has . I think its the same responsibility youve had any time being in that Briefing Room, not only in the trump administration, but any administration. The thing is you have got to be able to talk to the president in realtime and get questions, get information that typically we have not been able to always get or answers on the record to later be able to, you know, make sure were questioning the proper things there. So when youre in that room, its really important to be able to say in realtime, fact check the president , talk about whats going on. If they say x amount of tests are being conducted, ask why it wasnt the certain amount they talked about in the weeks prior they aimed to get by that week. Things that are actually really important to the American People. The information surrounding this, surrounding the outbreak. People are watching these briefings not because theyre entertained by it or they want to see the president feud with reporters as often you see in this room, but because they want information about the outbreak and whats going on. They want to hear from the doctors and the Health Experts and the treasury secretary about when theyll get their stimulus checks. Its crucial they get that information when they watch these briefings. I wonder what its like for you personally i dont mean to put you on the spot. I say new generation reporters, thats a good thing. Youth is an asset. Kaitlan, youre 28 years old, reporting at the white house, you said, mr. President , their authority is total, that is not true. What is it like to confront someone in power like that . I think its the truth. What the president was saying is not an accurate description of his authority as president. Its not just something that his critics would disagree with. Thats something that even, you know, conservatives, lifelong republicans, constitutionalists would not agree with. The president does not have that authority. Thats why its important to say who told you that . We did not get an answer from the president on that or if any governors agree with him. Its important for clarity purpose. People need to know who to listen to when it comes to reopening the country, making decisions about opening their businesses, feeling free to go back into Retail Stores and restaurants. When there is confusion about who exactly it is putting down the orders, whether its the president , these governors, these localitlocalities, thats it matters. Governors, Senior Administration officials know there has to be that line of Clear Thinking of whos doing what, whos responsibility is what. Its not intimidating for you to do that . I think after a certain amount of time covering the president , you know his tactics, you know how hell respond to something. Sometimes its not favorable if he doesnt like being fact ch k checked in realtime. The you saw the president in the Briefing Room that day, he cut me off and moved on to another reporter as is his right. But thats you know, thats a sign that the president didnt want to continue talking about that and didnt say which governors had told him that. I think also its important to remember the lens through what the president is viewing these briefings as. Theyre not always just the most uptodate medical information of whats happening with the outbreak. As we saw yesterday, initially there wasnt actually a briefing on the schedule. The Vice President had gone to colorado to speak at the air force Graduation Academy commencement speech and then was flying back. The president held this briefing any way. He brought out some of his political aides out into the room with him. He spent a large time in the briefing rebutting media reports that he believed were inaccurate of negative or wrong in his mind, pushing back on those, really taking a political aspect into these briefings. It comes as privately the president often talks about the ratings that these briefings get. And which person speaking gets the most ratings. Of course he theirs h thinks he. Thats an aspect of his when he talks about these briefings. I have to wrap. Thank you. One thing about these ratings and the briefings, im frustrated by this. People are not watching because its the president. People are watching because theyre scared, concerned about the crisis. On a typical day,9 Million People are watching right before the briefings, the briefings may get 10 million, 11 million, right after, 9 million. People are not watching because the president is on, theyre watching because theyre talking about the crisis. The president thinks its all about him. Screen time has its downsides. Theres been years of talk about the danger of having too much time on these devices, but with everyone sheltering in place, staying at home, were seeing the upsides, the benefits of screen time, the benefits of, look, instagram, Instagram Live, the ability to see celebrities and also ordinary users, what theyre doing, how theyre spending their time cooped up and in some time how Health Care Heroes on the front lines are telling stories from the hospitals, sharing their experiences through the web cams, through the cell phone screens as well. Look, Instagram Live has seen a lot of uptick in usership with users catching their favorite celebrities but theres also important things instagram is doing to try to inform people and combat misinformation. Let me bring in the head of instagram, adam mosseri, joining me for one of his first interviews about all of this. You talked about three goals for instagram during this crisis. I assume the first one is trying to help keep people safe. How do you actually do that with an app . Yeah. The three goals were trying to focus on right now are keeping people safe, bringing people together, now that were physically distant and figuring out who needs the most support and facilitating getting them that support. Keeping people safe, its about getting people good information. We had banners at the top of instagram putting people in touch with the cdc in the u. S. And other organizations around the world. We have done a stayathome sticker, which has been used moor than 300 million times, encouraging people to stay at home in the first place. Important information for Small Businesses. Mostly getting people good information and encouraging them to stay home. Th this says you may qualify for Health Insurance if you lost your job. So instagram is pointing people to healthcare. Gov to make sure theyre insured. It doesnt seem like instagrams bread and butter, so why do that . Its not our bread and butter but its an important time for us right now to do everything we can. Often the most important things for people or businesses are the large governmentbased stimulus programs, coverage programs, et cetera. So weve done things like point people to healthcare. Gov, let them know they might be eligible for benefits if they lost a job recently as part of the Affordable Care act. We pointed businesses towards the sba, the Small Business association, here in the u. S. , around loan programs, other stimulus programs. Just getting people good information quickly we think is critical. So were a little bit outside of our typical work idea zone right now, but were trying to do what we can. This relates to the idea about social Networks Providing information as well as entertainment, right . I look to instagram for diversions for breaks, for pictures of my friends, but we are also seeing instagram and other platforms focus more on misinformation and disinformation. M what happens if i logon now and post some lie claiming 5g is responsible for this. What happens my post . If you post misinformation related to covid19 or otherwise that creates risk of realworld harm, we try to find it as quickly as we can, take it off instagram, take it off facebook, et cetera. We do that by working with organizations around the world, Health Organizations around the world to identify claims, things like, you know, drinking bleach will cure you of your covid19 symptoms. Then we fan out from those claims to hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of pieces of content someone is texting me right now and try to find those things as quickly as we can and remove them. If you say the skys blue, that doesnt create the sorry, the sky is green, that doesnt create the risk of real world harm so well treat that differently. I feel like people are posting more honestly. Instead of a filter, posting your best life, people are just sharing the lonely experience of isolatio isolation. Yeah, were seeing people use instagram in all sorts of new ways. Yeah, were seeing rap battles. The rap battles are really big. Someone is upset im on tv with you right now. Its probably our rival network, adam that would rather talk to you. This is our new reality, right . Most guests on cnn are on phones. Im in my garage right now. Were definitely seeing people share all different parts of their identity. He would see that weve seen, okay, yeah, rap battles have been big but in my neighborhood i have restaurants posting daily menus for curb side pickup. Ive seen theres a dancer i follow in france who does amazing stuff. Hes been doing live and having his fans dance with him. People are coming up with creative ways to encourage people to stay home, to give people a little bit of joy, or to just scrape by right now. Right. Absolutely. Well, the rap battles are something. Keeping it interesting. Interesting new feature. Adam, thank you very much for being here. Thank you so much for having me, brian. And now you can reply to the text. There are other platforms that are also vital in this moment. The streaming video, of course, is up across the board from netflix to h hulu, disney plu and more. There are a lot of facets to youtube. I spoke with youtubes ceo about the changes that youtube has made to address. They come from all the different Public Health organizations and make sure that people understand what are the resources. I never thought we would have so many videos of hand washing, for example, but we thats one example. But weve served so many areas to make sure that users are getting the right information. Weve seen a 75 increase in the news coming from authoritative sources since the beginning of 2020. Weve seen a lot of demand there. But then we also what does that mean . Increase in video views for those . Yeah. So we talk about that as raising authoritative information. Then we talk about removing information that is problematic. You know, of course anything that is medically unsubstantiated, so people saying like take vitamin c, you know, it will cure you. Those are example of things that would be a violation of our policy. Anything that would go against world Health Organizations recommendations would be against our policy. Remove is an another important part of the policy. Youre not just putting the truth next to the lie, youre taking the lie down. Thats an aggressive approach. We do remove, you know, across youtube in nonpandemic times. Information that is a violation of our policy. And weve had Community Guidelines since the beginning of youtube, and weve anything that is is a violation of our policy, we remove it. And what was really unique about this was how fast moving the covid19 crisis was. So weve had to make numerous policy changes all within a short period of time to be able to make sure that we stayed abreast of the changes. For example, recently there was a theory that 5g was causing coronavirus symptoms. Now no established Health Organization said that 5 g is the source of the issue and so that quickly deemed that a violation of our policies and removed that content. Everyones youtube is different. Are there certain videos that basically everybody is seeing because they are so important or they are from authoritative sources . We saw really high click through in all the different Public Health information we made available. But, you know, this crisis has moved so quickly. I mean, i think thats the speed of it has taken away everyones breath in terms of how quickly we moved from just having a few infections, right, to, you know, having large to the world being under quarantine and we certainly have seen more users change. We started with basic information about what was coronavirus and focussed on the stayathome messages and got that. Now, really interestingly, were seeing a lot of users come to us and want to know about life under quarantine. And so we see a lot of interest in things like exercise at home. How do i fix my freezer . How do i give myself a haircut. Weve seen evolution across the platform in all the ways. Do you think the crisis caused you to change in ways that will be longterm . Well, i mean, i certainly have seen changes. I think in many ways weve seen an acceleration of our digital lives. I mean, we used to see movies, Science Fiction movies we would talk about kids going to school in the future or they would be, you know, on screens and they would be going to school that wasnt really in their neighborhood. It seemed like Science Fiction and all of our kids or so many have some kind of Digital School program now. Because schools are closed, sadly. So that is certainly an acceleration. I think with Public Health, you know, we probably would have gotten there in a couple of years but certainly its been a big acceleration of realizing the important need of working with established Public Health organizations to get the right Information Online to users and were seeing that opportunity. You can marry my extended conversation with youtube ceo susan wojciciki. We have a full conversation about misinformation, the future of youtube, and the rest. Let me take a couple of minutes here before the end of the hour to talk about what a lot of us are going through. Its okay to not be okay right now. Thats the main thing i want to say to everyone watching. All of us are grieving. Whether we sense it or not. All of us have lost something in the past few weeks. Some have suffered the ultimate loss of a father or mother or spouse or relative. Others have lost livelihoods, access to family and friends. Just losing the rhythms and routines that make life what it is is a profound loss. Were all grieving. But i have to admit, i have tried to bottle it up. I guess i was trying to be stoic for my wife and kids. I couldnt finish my nightly news letter. I was so angry at the ignorance in washington and so worried about family members and friends who are at risk of losing their jobs or already lost their jobs. It was the mix of emotions that many of you also feel. Thats when the tears came. We dont talk about this on tv much. I think we should change that. I think we should talk about this. Almost everybody is experiencing either isolation or stress or anxiety or other emotions as a result of this crisis. But lets remember weve never lived through Something Like this. We have nothing to compare this with. So it can be incredibly alarming. It can be incredibly depressing. Media can help. Making media can help. Even if its just posting on instagram or taking pictures or writing, journaling, messaging others. Talking with others. Face timing. And the emotions are real for everybody. For me a good night sleep worked wonders. Saturday morning i sent out the news letter and wrote about this. The reactions were extraordinary. The outpouring of reactions is extraordinary. Im still getting hundreds of emails from readers about this. Thats why i hope you can relate to this, as well. There were messages from guys trying to do the masculinity thing saying men shouldnt talk about crying or cry. But most people were so kind. They related to this. Here is what melissa said its okay to not be okay right now. Here is another quote its important to recognize the need to grieve what weve lost and acknowledge anxiety and uncertainty over the way forward. My message is if someone asks if youre okay, tell the truth. Its okay to not be okay. 25 years ago today was the bombing of the federal building. Then president clinton said if thinks americans have lost the capacity for love and caring and courage, they ought to come to oklahoma. Thats true now for every state. Every community. Its true around the world. Most people are good and want to help. There is help available. Here is the number for the crisis text line. You can text the word home to 741741. Theres also the disaster distress hotline. The help line. Well put the number up, as well. Were all going to get through this together. You can even email me. Bstelter gmail. Com. Andrew cuomos press conference is starting in any moment. Thank you for joining us. Coronavirus claims thousands of more american lives. Its a thoshl thing. As access to testing remains a critical issue. When will it be safe for americans to leave their home . And to the streets. The president backs protesters
