Youre unemployment at this time . Yes, sir. Those pictures from inside court barely more than an hour ago, you see the its draping loosely, showing no visible emotion throughout the entire hearing. He only ever glances up for more than a few seconds when answering simple prompts this happens a day after karl stone cried in confusion, crying to comprehend how the congregation welcomed this man to the sapgt wear, and he thanked them by turning the church into a shooting gallery. Now from the same Court Hearing weve heard from some family members of the de parted including a survivor whose son was slain where le stood inside that church. Your name man. Felicia sanders. Thank you, ms. Sanders for being here. We welcomed you wednesday night in our bible study with open arms. You have killed some of the most is beautifulest people that i know s every fiber in my body hurts and i will never be the same. It Tywanza Sanders was my hero. But as we say this the bible study f. We enjoyed, but may god have mercy on you. Will never in the again, but i forgive you. And have mercy on your soul. You hurt me. You hurt a lot of people. May god forgive you, and i forgive you. I want to get to cnns martin savidge. Hes in Charleston South Carolina. Martin, these are dramatic scenes inside of this courtroom, as dylann roof faces the judge there for the first time. You just got the arrest want. What does it say . Reporter these were released just after the bond hearing completed. There are a number of these warrant, but there are a couple de tails, some of which we did not know about, and they add to the grimness of what is already a horrible story. First and foremost the interesting note when authorities were putting out the image of the suspect at the time they didnt know he was dylann roof apparently once those images were circulated by the media, they were contacted by dill st. Dylanns father and uncle, who spoke with the authorities. The victims were hit multiple times, and then the other factor that comes forward, this is something we already knew but its been verified by the authorities, even after he was leaving this killing spree, he continued to elicit racial slurs as he walked out. He had the bond hearing today. Ive been through a lot of these hearings this was the most emotional, most powerful i have ever listened to. Confessed mad murderer dylann roof staring downwards with little visible emotion as he appeared via a video feed. What is your age . 21. Roof only spoke a few words as he stood through the short hearing, charged with nine coins of murder and possession of a firearm. Your honor, i have met with mr. Roof i think he understands the proceedings. Im setting your bond, young man, at 1 million. Reporter Law Enforcement sources say that he admitted he shot and killed. The chilling motive the 21yearold wanted to start a race war. Continuing to gather evidence they traced the handgun he was carrying to the shootings, and he bought it around his 121st birthday. He already faced a felony charge for drug possession. In effect did not a for employees at a Shopping Mall roof was asking unsettling questions about how Many Associates were working and what time they would leave. A Police Report says he had no prescription and a friend had given him the drugs to use opiate addiction, but he hasnt been convicted of a felony which might have been shown up on a background check and prevented roof from purchasing the gun. In charleston a shellshocked community struggles, as they plan nine funerals and try to answer troubling questions. That it took place in gods house, in the holy city of Charleston South Carolina f. Run rough shod over our moral sensibilities. Reporter you might have hearty in there the imagine strayed talk about the 1 million bond. That was for a weapons charge. There was no bond that was set. The judge said he did not have the authority on to set a bond when it comes to mull pallet counts of murder. That will have to come by a higher judge. So there is no bond. He is not getting out. Martin savidge, thanks for your report. I want more information from cnns Senior Investigative cone drew griffin. He has been talking to people who knew the shooter. He family friends, roommates also speaking out. What you can you tess you . We looking at a group wondering why they didnt sound the alarm on mr. Roof . We have an unxwloimd drugusing person spewing hatred, even forecasting some of the things he did in charleston. He had a gun, his friends were concerned about that. Even his grandfather reportedly telling wall street journal that he was concerned about his grandson, because he was becoming a loner and diving into this hatefilled rhetoric. The family did have a meeting of sorts this morning at one of the shooters is sisters house. Many of the family members we were there, we are told. After the meeting the pastor did come out and i want to share with you what the pastor told us about the family. What they ask and what i ask is that we continue to hold all these families in our prayers and that the whole world, our nation charleston the community understand we love them god loves them and we want the best and we continue to hold those people in our prayers. There was supposed to be a joyous weekend in the roof household. One of the daughters was to get married. The poster confirms of course that wedding has been postponed. Beloaned that im sure here looking and so far they have not made any public statements concern had shooting or that i am family. Drew griffin, this pain and suffering thats so clearly worn on the faces of the families of these victims. You can hear it in their voices. Its shared by so many more people. Among them South Carolina governor nikki haley. So we have some grieving to do. And weve got some pain we have to go through. Parents are having to explain to their kids how they can go to church and feel safe, and thats not something we would ever thought we would deal with. I want to talk to South Carolina senator jim scott. Senator, thank you so much for joining me. We are so sorry as we watch what happens in charleston. Our hearts go out to the people there. I think yesterday watching the governor governor haley, you could see with how shaken she was, really an expression of the emotion over the last 36 hours. How have you been handling this . How have you been processing it . And how have the folks around you been processing it . I think its a very difficult time. The raw emotions that you saw on the governors face and you heard and felt in our words are the same raw emotions that i have. Clementa pinkney was a friend of mine a solid, loving person a gregarious personality, someone who was a uniter i tell you, ive gone from the very strong sense of anger to confusion, and to prayer. I think what you are seeing here in the Charleston Community is a range of emotions driven by a senseless murder. Weve grown so much and charleston specifically and now to see this senseless act of violence is absolutely unbelievable act of evil. Here at home and in a place of worship, all places. I frankly dont think that it is possibility to fully comprehend whats in the mind of a person who is willing to do what this person has done. Its truly senseless. So far its clear that the shooter settled on mother emanuel because it is a black church. The department of justice now says its investigating if this crime is an act of terrorist. Do you think its terrorism if. I can tell you, for the nine victims, it was certainly an act of terrorism, looking at the specific definition im not quite sure that im arrived at how to define it, is it an act of terrorism from thought of us in the community, we certainly feel a sense of being terrorized, so so the question remains, the biggest question that remains from my perspective is how does someone with that level of hatred and what do we do about it . For me the definition of what this person filled with hate filled with ratism what he did, trying to figure out how to define it. And hopefully he will meet his faith through the criminal Justice System and then an to the good lord. A hate crime charge senator, would have to come from federal prosecutors. Since your state is one of only five without a hate crime law, do you think that changes . I think the maximum penalty for his acts is death. Im not sure there is a stronger penalty than death, and certainly life behind bars is another option but the fact of the matter is until the law, i think we have the strongest options available to us today. I want you, if you will to listen to something that president obama said yesterday when he was addressing the shooting. That this time of Mass Violence does not happen in other advanced countries. It doesnt happen in other places with this kind of frequency. It is in our power to do something about it. So the president there is talking about gun control, you certainly are a big supporter of the second amendment. You say that gun rights should not be restricted. Do you think its a conversation of some sort of gun restrictions. Do you think thats a conversation worth restarting . I certainly think well have the conversation but we should examine as we peel this case back a few layers what well find is that he broke several gun laws in his committing of this atrocity this murder. He is without any question has broken several of those laws. So the question is is there a law that could be put in place that would have prevented this from happening . My answer is no. So the fact is that yes we have some very strong gun laws yes he broke all the gun laws that we have and so the question goes to solutions. Im willing to go to the table and look for real solutions, some have sited the background check process did not work the way it was supposed to work. I would say youll see all cards on the table, and we will have a thorough and good evaluation of what happened and what should happen as we move forward. Theres a discussion a big debate going on about the Confederate Flag that flies over the South Carolina state dishouse. Lindsey graham said its about this guy, the shooter, not about the flag. Do you agree with him . Certainly. Listen the actions of this one individual is not connected to the Confederate Flag thats clear. He was filled with hate and rage and he took it out on South Carolina. We are all paying a heavy price. The fact of the matter is will there be a larger broader conversation around the confed real flaing . Im sure there had be but in the year 2000 about 15 years ago, both blacks and whites republicans and democrats, came up with a compromise that at the time worked for our state, and will there be an ongoing conversation Going Forward to look for a absolute for our state . I think the answer will be yesterday. Senator scott, thank you for talking with us. Our hearts go out to you and the people of South Carolina. Just moments ago, we heard from a survivor of the attack that said every fiber of her body hurts after losing her son in the shooting. The story of his heroic final act to save her life, is next. His mother was monday the nine shot and killed by a sinister gun at mother emanuel in charleston. theno jones is there youre getting a better picture of those people leaving behind families and friends, suffering through so much grief that was very apparent today. Anyone who was able to watch or listen to the bond hearing was able to bear witness to the grief sxrens expressed by the family members, and were learning more about the youngest victim of wednesdays shooting. Survivors have told family friend Sylvia Johnson about the last moments with the shooter. After the young man tried to stop him from doing what he wanted to finish off, he said no youve raped our women, and you are taking over the country. He shot the young man. His mother was there, and she witnessed. She pretended as though she was dead shot and dead but she watched her son fault and laid there. She laid there in his blood. A haunting end for a young man who recently shared a song online called whats wrong with just being black . One you go black, you never go back. Aint no way we can just be scrap like metal. Reporter for the young man who Law Enforcement say was hoping to start a race war with murder victims friends and family have only offered forgive him pastor Clementa Pinkneys cousin is urging the shooter to seek help. Im concerned he gets the right help that he even asked for forgiveness for what hiss done and acknowledged he did do wrong. A College Baseball star who lost his mother in the massacre is surrounded by support, and showing nothing but love. Love is always stronger than hate. So we just love the way my mom would, and the hate woman be anywhere close to what love is. Sanderss 87yearold aunt Susie Johnson was killed alongside him. But even after thursdays tragic shooting the confed real flag continued to fly over South Carolinas capitol as nine black families prepare to bury their loved once. We have a look at the history and growing controversy over the use of this flag. Tom . Brianna, some black lawmakers are so upset over those images you just showed there that they are taking it into their own hands. They say theyre going to renew the political battle to essentially push this flag off the capitols grounds al toy. Thats a tall order, even until these circumstances. Reporter even in the wake of overwhelming sadness, even amid charges of horrific crimes there it is the Confederate Flag flying above the grounds of the South Carolina capitol while outrage erupts below. This was a racial hate crime and must be confronted as such. That symbol has to come down. Reporter the u. S. Flag was order to do half staff, but the rebel flag remained high padlocked into place. Why . State law. In 2000 civil rights activists successfully lobbied for a larger flag to be removed from the capitol dome, but in exchange all the other trouble bugts to the confederacy became untouch annual without an override of two thirds of the state legislature. Thats not likely here or in other places where some have said for years the flag is about southern pride, heritage. Mississippi its even part of the state flag. Were here to show our support that were proud of being who we are and where were from. Welcome back to the lead. Continuing now with our National Lead thursdays massacre at an history black church in charleston the confessed killer 21yearold dylann roof told officials he hope to start a race war, which begs the question how many more ticking time bombs are out there waiting to kill . Ehave been its unclear that roof was identifying with or a member of one of these white supremacist groups but give us a sense how prevalent they are. Theyve been on the rise since 2001 since 9 11 theres been a spike. The Southern Poverty Law Center says there shall 784 of them initially, 19 of them in South Carolina and 13 of those are white supremacist groups in South Carolina. How big a concern is it . Yes, absolutely they say we talk a lot about isis and the concerns about al qaeda, terrorism in this country, but just as big, for many Law Enforcement agencies around the country is the threat of extremists from the right wing including might supremacist groups. The fbi in 2013 says there were nearly 6,000 hate crimes. 51 of them in South Carolina two thirds of those hate crimes in 2013 were definitely against africanamericans. Its definitely a rising concern. They said they use a lot of resources trying to track these crimes. They say for many parts in the country, isis is not a concern. Thats a concern in the coast and big cities the in smaller places around the country, this is a bigger concern. Evan perez, thanks for your report. I want to talk about hate crimes in the United States with heidi byrick with the offer poverty law infers a Civil Rights Organization that tracks extremism. Heidi, thanks for being with us to explain some of these things were talking about. When you look at hate groups and hay crimes. We see theyre on the rise. Tell us how much so . The number of hate groups has basically doubled since about the year 20 on 00. That was the year that Census Bureau said the whites would go into the minority in 2042 which if youre a white supremacist is upsetting. Research done by the department of justice shows that its more than 200,000 hate crimes a year. This is a category of crime severely undercounted and a much bigger social problem than what the fbis numbers indicate. Explain that to us. 30 times more than that is what the bureau of justice statistics thinks. How dough reconcile that sdrep yags . Well clearly large parts of the population arent reporting hate crimes when they happen. Theyre willing to answer a survey question but not actually going to police. The other problem is many states have hate crimes loves that dont cover, for example, the lbgt community. My home some states have reported zero hate crimes, which is really a problem. So ill bet you know the answer to my next question. Is Law Enforcement paying enough attention to these lone wolf type of extremists . And what more do they need to do . Yeah the fbi definitely is watching these types of extremists but the basic trend since 9 11 has been to focus on islamic terrorism, which is understandable. But the fact of the matter is domestic terrorists, people inspired by White Supremacy have killed more people in the United States since 9 11 than have people inspiredly radical islam. The federal government needs to really focus on this. The department of Homeland Security has stopped collecting intelligence on these kinds of people. Thats just not acceptable. This is the kind of terrorism that most americans are going to face just as your reporter said earlier. They have stop collecting standards, unbelievable. Heidi, great speaking with you. Thank you. Thanks. Coming up the survivors of a massacre. How do they cope after witnessing just horror. That is next. A community in Charleston South Carolina praying for comfort after the massacre at a historic black church. They may never get clarity into why their loved ones were taken in such a violent way. Reverend joseph darby joining me on the phone. Reverend first after, im very sorry to be talking to you under these circumstances. We certainly appreciate you calling in and speaking out about this. I know that you knew pastor Clementa Pinkney personally. Give us a sense of how his family is holding up . The family is doing about as well as could be expected under the circumstances. Theyre going through all that that usually accompanies a grieving process. We heard from some of the family members of the victims. Amazing what we heard them say and the kind of people they clearly are. Tell us what members of the church are saying. How did they feel . Members of the churches in the low country in general are, you know its a combination of shock, horror disbelief, a bit of belief because the perpetrator was rapidly caught so i think people are going through all of that. What about the survivors . Can you tell us anything about how theyre doing . I have not talked with them since that church really isnt my district. Ive been trying to be supporting of them and the presiding elders of that district. The gunman told authorities he wanted to start a race war. Do you have an opinion on why he would specifically target this church with this with this pastor at its helm . Well this pastor carries a pretty high profile. He ace a state senator, very well known well respected. This is a cathedral of the Civil Rights Movement so i get if someone is stupid enough to want to do that its a target. You help lead a. M. E. Churches in your area. Have you gotten any other threats . Do you have any other concerns . I dont have any other concerns. No one in this district at least has had any threats. I havent even gotten any threats myself lately. Reverend thanks so much for talking with us. We hope everything remains calm at the other churches and our utmost condolences to you and the entire community . Thank you very much. Cnns Jason Carroll joins me now from the Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate new york. Thats the maximumsecurity prison where they escaped from two weeks ago. Jason, give us the latest. Lets take about that surf. So far searchers have cleared more than 200 structures theyve followed up on dozens of leads, but earlier today they are admit they are in for the long haul. It could be days week or months before the fugitives are caught. Their mug shots added to the faces of the nations most hardened and dangerous criminals, richard matt and david sweat in and out on the most wanted list a 50,000 reward offered on top of the 100,000 offered last week for information leading to their return. Searchers have cleared more than 600 miles of trails in the rural area surrounding the correctional facility where the two made their daring escape two weeks ago. We dont have concrete evidence theyre here. They definitely are someplace. We will find them. Reporter doesnt that essentially mean they could be anywhere . If thats the case how do you search for two men who could potentially be anywhere . Thats a good question. We said from day one they could be anywhere. We continue to search exclusively and extensively in this area with our ground searchers. However, bear in mind what you dont see is the voluminous leads that are coming into our tips lines, and our investigatoring that are behind the scenes. Reporter Joyce Mitchell the prison employee is still the key figure in the escape plan. Investigators say she has already admitted to having an affair with matt and an inappropriate relationship with sweat, also revealing both matt and sweat had planned to murder her husband lyle but has mitchell revealed everything to her husband . The things she said to him alone, and the things that are just so hurtful, so revealing that shes said everything. She admitted there was a plot to kill him. He doesnt think there could be anything worse than that. Prisoner no longer on lockdown no longer restricted to the cells, now that the holes have been repaired the tunnels they used to make their escape sealed. Now, brianna, questions about prison policy prison security measures should any of that be changed in the in the fallout of this escape . We asked prison officials about that as well. The only thing theyre well to say at this point, brianna, is that the prison policy is currently under review. Brianna . And so make it should be. Joining me to talk more about it is jeff dumas. He worked at the correctional facility for 25 years, and ar you this roderick is with me the former assistant director to the u. S. Marshals. Thank you for being with me gentlemen. Jeff you said the honor block of the Clinton Correctional Facility was run like a College Campus and these inmates had a lot of leeway. You had guards who would stop shining flashlights at them at night because inmates, prisoner we are allowed to cover their heads at night, and they said they were allowed to main that i jail cells, which could have hidden razor blades or other things in the wall. Why do they get so much freedom in a maximumsecurity prison . The freedom is because of their complaints. It all comes down through the grievances.
