A source just revealed to cnn that prison worker Joyce Mitchell has admitted to investigators, she smuggled hacksaw blades to the men inside hamburger meat. Also new dash cam video of the white supremacist dylann roof. Now theres growing momentum behind efforts to remove the confederate battle flag as an emblem of hate from state houses. Were covering all angles of the breaking news with our guests. Lets begin with the manhunt upstate new york. Our National Correspondent Jason Carroll is on the scene. What do we know about this new information pertaining to that prison worker Joyce Mitchell who is now under arrest . A lot of new information about Joyce Mitchell. Apparently she vouched for them for several months went as far as giving baked goods to other guards at the prison to try to convince other guards that both of these inmates were good guys and could be trusted. We are also hearing, wolf from a Law Enforcement source that Joyce Mitchell went as far as to going to prison officials to have david sweats cell moved right next on richard matts. All of this new information coming in as this intense manhunt is well underway. A Law Enforcement official tells cnn, richard matt and david sweat may have left behind personal items including a pair of boots and what appears to be provisions they may have planned to take with them as they rushed out in a hurry. The manhunt now intensifying. And that wooded area just 20 miles west of the prison. A source with knowledge of the investigation tells cnn that mitchell passed tools used in the escape in a chunk of frozen hamburger meat. She asked a prison guard on the honor block to carry the meat into the prison and pass to it richard matt. This as the husband of Joyce Mitchell the prison employee accused of helping matt and sweat escape is speaking out for the first time. Telling nbcs today show that they planned on killing him to help make their escape go smoothly. She told me that matt wanted her to pick him up. She said i never leave without lyle. Never. And he said ill give you some pills to give him to knock him out. And you can pick us up. She said i cant do this. Then she said he threatened her that somebody inside the facilities would do something to me to harm me or kill me or something outside of jail if she didnt do this. Had she picked them up he doesnt think she would have survived. She would have been dead in half an hour. Just the getaway. They would kill her and all they wanted was that vehicle. And Lyle Mitchell denying reports that his wife had a sexual relationship with either of the inmates. She wore on her sons life and her son, i never, ever had sex with them. And new video obtained by abc news offers some insight into the mindset of richard matt. It shows him in 1997 smiling and posing with a blow gun. Dip these in aids blood. Well put a patent on them and sell them as deadly weapons. The blow gun fired into his arm. This video done nine months before he then dismebld his own boss putting matt behind bars. And a little more information if i may about that big chunk of meat that was passed on to richard matt. Apparently Joyce Mitchell convinced a prison guard by the name of gene palmer to pass that meat to richard matt. It did not go through a metal detector. A violation of prison policy. I did speak to palmers attorney several times. I spoke to him at length about everything that had gone on about, the allegations. He said his client didnt know about the frozen meat or any escape plans. He can tell you the new york state Inspector General is looking into the correctional facility trying to find out everything that went on before the escape. Wolf . We know from federal sources the federal government is sending in Additional Resources to upstate new york on help with this manhunt. Clearly, im told by one Law Enforcement official that theyre cautiously optimistic that they do believe theyre looking in the right area. Finally after looking all over the state. All the way close to the border with pennsylvania. The other thing that is interesting, the fbi, the marshal service, the atf are lending a bigger role. Reporter well wolf today both the senate and the House Legislature here in South Carolina passed resolutions that said they can now begin talking about the possibility of passing some kind of measure to bring down Confederate Flag and it is no small measure. In both cases it required a twothirds majority. However, saying that youre going to Start Talking about it and actually acting and doing something about taking down that flag were a long way from that. Hundreds of south carolinians rallied on the steps of the South Carolina state house. While inside state lawmakers. The world is watching us. Our ancestors were literally fighting to keep human beings as slaves and continue the unimaginable acts that occur when someone is held against their will. I am not proud of this heritage. The controversy is not a new one. The flag was removed atop the capitol dome in 2000. After last weeks massacre nicky haley, a republican made it very clear where she stands. Its time to move the flag from the capitol grounds. Many prominent republican politicians have followed suit. Some with a long held relief that it represents southern heritage. This is a circumstance where the people led the politicians. I came to conclude after going to charleston that we had to act and sooner rather than later and god help South Carolina if we fail to achieve the goal of removing the flag. The rallying cry is sweeping the south from South Carolina to mississippi. One of the few states where the fred flag still flies. Lawmakers who once engaged the south are growing in coreus. Mississippi did what no other has done publicly called to change. As a christian i believe our states flag has become a point of offense. That needs to be removed. I believe the same is true here in the commonwealth of virginia. And in virginia, the states governor announced the state would take steps to stop issuing license plates bearing the divisive flag. Sears and walmart with Stores Across the u. S. Are removing the Confederate Flag merchandise from its shelves. We dont want to sell products that makes anyone feel uncomfortable. This was the right thing to do. The attitude has been that this is a very, very difficult decision despite the bipartisan support that you saw yesterday. You wont fly that Mississippi State flag in your Congressional Office or outside your Congressional Office. Is that right . Thats correct. Basically because as an africanamerican i resent what the flag implies. I am not one to promote hate or hostility. I dont see it as heritage. And i personally take offense to it because we are better than that. And im convinced that the only way you can solve it is by not displaying it. 40 . Nearly 40 of the people who live in your state of mississippi are africanamericans. The highest percentage of any state in the United States. It seems hike the political clout of africanamericans in mississippi might be limited, right in. It is. Had it not been for the Voting Rights act, i wouldnt be here. It has always taken a federal oversight to make things happen. The flag i agree, is a local issue. If youre going to make this country the country that we know it can be were going to have to put these symbols into museums where they belong and not front and center and try to defend actions that were meant to enslave people. You see in South Carolina theyre moving to get rid of the flag from the state grounds at the capitol. All of a sudden some people in the legislature, some people in mississippi, theyre saying it is time to change the state flag. Im happy to see it. Say that he is a christian. Hes looked at this thing and hes convinced that we need to revisit. And im hoping we will move it out of the capitol. Make it not the states flag. That symbol has been a symbol of repression and hate to a lot of right thinking people in this country. And i think in my state, we would do better by changing the flag coming with something new that represents the new mississippi and not the old mississippi. Is this a partisan issue . Whereby the democrats want to get rid of the symbol and the flag, the republicans want to keep it . Has that been historically true . Well no. The old guard trying to defend the past. This flag represents the past and it is on an effort to keep it. So no maer what you, as a state with a 40 africanamerican population and more africanamerican officials than any other state, we can do better. The image of who we are can be enhanced. Were going to work on it. Hope springs eternal. I am convinced there are those in my state who want a better view. It was pretty impressive to see the two republican senators of South Carolina say lets move that nag away from the State Capitol grounds. You want to fly it on your private property thats fine. But off the public property. That flag represents everything thats wrong. For someone to defend the flag as heritage or Something Else we know its not. And lets get on with the business of developing our communities. What do you think of all these retailers, walmart, for example, sears, amazon ebay deciding theyre no longer going to sell the Confederate Flag paraphernalia . Its a strong statement. And believe me the economic leaders see it. Walmart is one of the biggest employers in my district. To take that stand is very positive. Youve wanted this for a long time. Why did it take deaths of nine wonderful, prominent africanamerican people in your community. Why did it take so long and this horrible tragedy for this to happen . I dont know. I cant really explain it. It is unfortunate it did. Actually right where im standing i led a march from here 100 yards being started. Up the road 110 miles of it to columbia. Four days we had football coaches, prominent people joining us it was clear that a majority of the people said carolina did not want the Confederate Flag then. It was above the capitol. The state flag, the American Flag and underneath the Confederate Flag. Unfortunately, they put it on the state house grounds in front of the capitol away from the dome. But its it shouldnt be there. This is a symbol that for many was appropriated to be used as their statement against racial progress. Against integration, the statement in support of racial bigotry. As we saw that awful man who went into this church less than a week ago and killed these precious people. To have something that is used by many and is a symbol against all American Values on public property is just wrong. It should be in a museum thats an appropriate place for it. It is no longer the symbol of hatred and bigotry. It is a part of history. And i commend Governor Haley for her leadership and stepping forward. Im confident the votes will be in the general assembly. A bipartisan support for this. A majority of south carolinians want on public property the United States flag and the state flag. They dont want the confederate battle flag. Realistically, when do you think that flag will be removed . Im not sure. Wrapping up the budget theyll stay there until they get it done. The governor said if not shell call a special session. The legislative leaders of both parties are supporting this. You mentioned the u. S. Senators graham and scott, and of course jim clyburn and mark sanford were there. The will is there. Im confident it will happen and it has to happen. To have what occurred here right across the street less than a week ago is just a reminder, racial bigotry is alive. If there is a symbol that it gives people momentum that hate others because of their race it has to go away from public property. What do you make of this report, these reports that sales of the Confederate Flag and related paraphernalia skyrocketed over the past few days. Maybe by 3,000 or 4,000 as some of the major retailers like amazon and ebay walmart, sears were are going to remove this from their sites. It shows there are some who want it for whatever reason. Probably some who are basically hoarders. I think the National Retailers have made this decision they deserve a pat on the back too. You know. Its about American Values. Were one nation under god with liberty and justice for all. And to have a symbol that is being sold by National Retailers, that people have appropriated to support or to ratify their bigotry is wrong. My hats off to them. Thats what america wants as well. I know you want tighter gun control. You dont only want to remove the flag but tighter gun control. What do you make of the fact that walmart is still selling a lot of guns and ammunition even as theyre removing the sale of the flag . Well if walmart stops selling guns that would really affect the supply because there are so many out there. What we need is a national conversation. Again, im confident, i know over whelmingly the American Public wants reasonable rules about guns particularly handguns. Weve got to get a license. Weve got to do all kinds of things to be able to drive a car. And weve got a huge amount of handguns out. There is no civilized industrialized nation in the world that has anything like this. We need and i think it should be a national debate. The so we have one rule that generally applies to all. Some basic standards of what you need to do to be able to have a handgun. To get registered so Everybody Knows who bought it. Make sure your record is clear and all of that and have people stand up and say, okay i want to purchase a gun like you purchase a car. You have to go through a lot of rig ma role to buy a car. Well we ought to have some reasonable rules about that. That i think will curb the access and the supply of guns. And you know these nine precious people. I cant tell you the heart ache in this community. And i know it is felt around the country. These were nine people the concentric circles of their friends and their church family. There is one that the board of the housing authority. The commissioner. Another who worked in our auditorium right down the street. Every time i went in there, she gave me a big hug. I can still feel it. We lost nine precious people because some guy could easily get his job from however he got it. Weve heard reports on how he might have gotten it but america deserves better. We have to sit down with everybody. The gun lobby needs to approach this with American Values. That is the safety and security of our citizens and churches. Reporting the autopsy of freddie gray, the man who sustained fatal injuries in the back of a police van, determined that a quote, high Energy Injury caused his death. Justin you reported on this copy of the autopsy on freddie gray. Tell us exactly what you discovered. Sure. The big finding is that his injury was caused by a high Energy Injury. They said they compared it to Shallow Water diving incidents and think it was caused by the vehicle that he was in the back of either aggressively decelerating or action set rating. The medical examiner thinks he may have been able to prom himself up. Because he was shackled at the hands and feet he was unable to brace for a fall that he could not anticipate. They said it was not an accident because the officers could have foreseen that he would need medical assistance. And that it was a homicide because the procedures were in he place for such trans ports. They are calling it acts of omission. Youre a lawyer a prosecutor. What does it mean as far as the case case against Six Baltimore Police officers . There is no question it helps, you have the prosecutors theory of the case. We know this autopsy report was given to Marilyn Mosby and she chose to indict had case very, very quickly there after. I will tell you, wolf im concerned about the process. It is very rare for an autopsy report to be leaked to the press. If an attorney were to do the same thing, there would be significant, significant consequences. It is both illegal and unethical. So i question why and how it was released. The especially because the defense team says the only people who had access to it were the States Attorneys Office as well as the medical examiners office. When i look at what has been reported in terms of the autopsy, i see a lot of legal conclusions in the report. So it appears to me that the Prosecutors Office was likely working with the mes office. That is not unusual. I think it is unusual when it comes to the manner and the cause of death which is the determination that should be made by the medical examiner and not necessarily by the prosecutor. So this is in a sense, very helpful to the prosecution. Any good defense attorney will raise these questions with their own experts and at trial. Im a little concerned about it the states attorney is strongly condemning the leak of this autopsy. I think the problem is that it is very speculative and im surprised in an autopsy report where theyre saying, we surmised that he must have gotten to his feet and then later fell down because he wouldnt be able to balance himself. My comment is that might not mean a rough ride. It might absolutely be negligence and an omission that he wasnt secured better buckled down so he couldnt get up. If in fact he got to his feet somehow and his legs are shackled together and his hands are tight, i challenge anyone to stay on your feet when a vehicle is driving normally. Turning to a dwroos only mystery still developing authorities are looking at a relative of the man allegedly responsible for the murder of four people in a washington, d. C. Mansion last month. Every time something comes out of his mouth, its controversial, a normal candidate is taken seriously, trump will not survive because of it. It seems like a character. I want to see more polls that show the same thing were seeing in this Suffolk University poll. It speaks to name recognition. They see someone whos kind of speaking his mind i think sometimes he gets a little crazy with that. You see this desire for republicans and for democrats, they want someone whos really speaking their mind who doesnt seem like theyre always trying to navigate the polls all the time. Hes very blunt, obviously, he tells hes a straight talker. He is and hes going to make an impact on the race. What that is is yet to be seen. In the debates, he could knock off a senator or a governor off the main debate stage. I could be in the top ten. He is he has National Name idea. The catch 22 you need to get in the base. You need the exposure of the debate s debates herman cane was doing well, Michele Bachmann you remember her, the congresswoman from minnesota, she was doing well, all of a sudden, not so well. That was the dynamic, you get out there, you jump in the race you get a lot of attention you see these candidates take off. As soon as theyre taken seriously, the press vets them their opponents attack them, and theyre in the basement again, i guarantee you, thats what happens. He has more name recognition than any of these other republican candidates dont you think . He has so much name recognition, i dont think people when people think of him, theyre not necessarily thinking of someone super positively. I think of Fred Thompson he had a lot of name recognition, he was seen in a more authoritative light. Donald trump is seen i think a little. Its a little laughable, people like his antics when hes seen in a different spotlight, i dont think its going to fly. If you dive into the polls, whether they like him is not necessarily heres where he could have a huge impact. The way he goes after jeb bush for example hes not going to the way he talks. He could be a blocker or tackler for the candidates. If you can allow trump to go after jeb, if youre jindal or someone else who doesnt want to attack jeb, that could give you an opportunity to rise without having to attack bush. I recall that white house Correspondents Dinner where he had been on the tirade about president obamas birth certificate. It made him look ridiculous. I think when hes able to go on a monologue, hes fine. When theres someone there thats quick, jeb bush has shown he can give a quick retort. I think donald trump can really suffer. Isnt there an argument to be made that when you go after donald trump, you only make him stronger. That gives him more exposure . Or you look like a reasonable person if you dismiss him with something thats factual. Basically, today in the gulf course what was his point, he was trying to show what . That he built another one of the greatest golf courses in the world, of course. Its donald trump. What was very interesting a lot of sports journalists were there, and now a lot of political journalists as well. He wanted to show off his new course and he did. Im sure hes right when he says he bought this golf course six years ago when there was a recession going on. That all seems accurate. What that has to do with him as a potential president ial candidate, i dont know beat ross perot, a third Party Challenger . Undermine the two party process, if you will. Theres no issues hes running on that the two major parties are not addressing. Now is the secret he had identified a few issues the two parties werent addressing that created some third party momentum. The two parties are pretty defined and theres no big issue out there that neither are addressing them that trump is talking about. Hes running as a republican hes thinking of a third party donald rump in. No thats not. I think, theres no plan here he were overthinking this right . I mean this press Conference Today seemed to have nothing to do with president ial politics. Or reminding people of his value, right . Very good.
