A risky message to stay at home americans as reopening plans are under way in every state by the end of this week. Jeremy, the president took questions at a tab ncabinet meea while ago and tripled down on taking hydroxychloroquine. Reporter he did triple down. The president is taking a daily dose of that and has been for about a week and a half. The president insisting it is an additional line of defense. He also attacked numerous studies that show it is not effective against the virus. Tonight President Trump defiant defending his decision to try to ward off the coronavirus by taking an unproven drug, hydroxychloroquine. Many doctors came out and said its great. They said you have to go to a doctor. I said i have a doctor in the white house. It is a line of defense. I am dealing with a lot of people. Reporter the president ignoring a warning by the fd arca about using hydroxychloroquine. They said it was not effective treatment for coronavirus. I will stay on it a while longer. It seems to be very safe. And rejecting a study that found hydroxychloroquine ineffective against coronavirus. It was a false study done given to extremely sick people who were ready to die. The study came out the people were ready to die, everybody was old, that was a phony study and dangerous to do it. The fact is, people should want to help people, not to make political points. Its really sad when they do that. Reporter that study conducted on hundreds of patients at v. A. Hospitals was partially funded by the Governments National institute of health. What has been determined is it doesnt harm you. Very powerful drug but it doesnt arm you. Reporter but Clinical Trials has shown it can cause heart rhythm problems. The president has heart problems according to his exam. In a memo it was said reporter Vice President mike pe pence said he is not taking hydroxychloroquine. But the president is not taking the health step recommended, which is wearing a mask. Asked whether or not he would wear a mask going to the manufacturing facility in michigan. He said he is made aware it requires the use of mask, but they will defer to the white house whether or not he wears a mask. If he is not wearing a mask at ford as he hasnt been doing at other places, he would be not following the policy. Erica hill is in new york. Part of new york state is reopening today. The sixth region, western new york reopened moving into phase one. Again, that brings that to six regions here in new york state. As we see openings around the country. Some of the pictures make it seem like some areas never stopped. A packed High School Graduation in norman, oklahoma looks like a flashback, but its not. We had permission from everybody we needed so we had the graduation. Reporter the school was given the go ahead. There were temperature checks, but masks were optional. 600 showed up. One model shows masks may be helping. 40 of the u. S. Wears mask about 80 of the time. That is probably helping separate out the mobility. Reporter states are monitoring new cases. Numbers are up in 17 states including florida where miami is preparing to reopen parks and businesses tomorrow. We are ready to get back to work. Reporter nevada seeing new cases rise as the venetian said its accepting reservations for june 1. Hawaii just extended its mandatory 14day quarantine for visitors through june. In North Carolina tyson foods closed this chicken Processing Plant for the second time in a week due to positive cases. A quarter of the confirmed cases in nebraska have been linked to meat Processing Plants. A sober picture of those most impacted. New data broken down by zip code confirming low income teareas o color with higher death than others. Distance learning creates challenges but also a world of possibilities. For so many kids this summer will be a chance to keep learning. Reporter a handful of universities will limit in person learning, some ending at thanksgiving. We have to keep our campuses safe and healthy. Reporter as businesses large and small try to nag gavigate t new normal. This is going to be tough. We are going to lose some good restaurants. Reporter Outdoor Dining returns tomorrow for connecticut. Salons reopening has been pushed to june. I havent calculated, but i am afraid there could be a sea change. Reporter new Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announcing that all licensed pharmacists are licensed to administer covid19 tests and said by the end of the month at 50 cvs locations in new jersey, swab tests will be available. Governor ned lamont, thank you for joining us. I want to get your reaction. The president said hes taking hydroxychloroquine which has potentially side effects. Would you tell your residents to follow his example . No. I would tell them to wear a surgical mask and i would tell the president , you want a line of defense that works, try a surgical mask. Let me get your thoughts on this claim when it comes to the critical issue of testing. When we have a lot of cases, i dont look at that as a bad thing. In a certain respect it is a good thing because it means our testing is much better. If we were testing a Million People instead of 14 Million People, we would have far fewer cases, right . I view it as a badge of honor. Really, its a badge of honor. A great tribute to the testing and all of the work the professionals have done. Governor, what is your response to that . I think what he means to say is the number of infections is a percentage of infections to the number of testing. We are now down less than 10 . Thats a big plus. About a month or so ago people were at 30 that all of the people tested were infected. Now that its down to 10 . Today i think was less than 5 . I think thats what he meant to say. Thats how you are making progress. Connecticut is moving into the first phase tomorrow. Scott gottlieb is advising you on this. He said transmission has come down dramatically. What have you seen to give you confidence on reopening this. He and zeke spoke to the state and said we have followed the metrics, hospitalization is down, fatalities are down. We have a lot of ppe. Right now we have the gowns and masks and finally, we have the Contact Tracing in place. They gave us the green light. This is the time to take baby steps and start reopening. And you are so much safer outdoors than indoors so start with outdoor eating for example. Hair salons were supposed to open tomorrow, but i understand you pushed that back to june 1. What the has to happen in the next two weeks to make those kind of businesses safer . It will mean salons will have more time to get the plastic shields up and prepare. A lot of the stylists have a little more time to get the day care and child care they need. People were anxious that they were going too fast. I think they appreciated an extra ten days. Connecticut beaches, they have been open. What is your message to residents going into this Holiday Weekend as far as the beaches are concerned . Be careful. I know its warm, sunny. I know this is memorial day weekend, but our beaches are beautiful. Keep your distance, make sure you enjoy them, but dont love them too much. If it gets too crowded, we have a problem. We certainly do. Governor lamont, good luck to you and everyone in connecticut. Thanks for joining us. Just ahaead, the president saying he knows better than everyone about hydroxychloroquine. And public rest rarooms, ar they safe . Thats safe drivers save 40 . It is, thats safe drivers save 40 . Hes right there. Its him safe drivers do save 40 . Click or call for a quote today. President trump is taking every opportunity to defend his decision to take an unproven treatment for coronavirus despite potentially serious side effects. Lets break down his using hydroxychloroquine with dr. Sanjay gupta and with maggie. The president is taking hydroxychloroquine and telling others to do the same thing. But the food and Drug Administration put out this warning in april. Let me read it to you and the viewers thats very concerning. I dont understand what tack car tachycard yeah. It can flip into a more concerning heart rhythm. There is a history here. This medication has been around for several decades, but as they started to try it for covid19, they saw things that were concerning. Doctors could prescribe it off label. But as the fda started to look at these studies coming in, they said there is enough of a concern here that outside of a Clinical Trial or hospitalization, this medicine should no longer be used. Keep in mind two things, treatment of coronavirus and the other is prophylaxis or trying to prevent the infection after you have been exposed. In these treated patients they found it was not helpful and could potentially cause harm. There is no evidence it could prevent the disease. Those trials are underway. There is no evidence it works, potential harm. Maggie, how did it seem that the president seemed to relish the surprise of everyone when he made the claim he started taking it a week and a half ago. The president likes to be the center of attention, likes to surprise the media and wants to prove this drug is good. We know the president s valet who served him, one of them, tested positive for the coronavirus and was a cause of alarm around the west wing including the president. The president was very worried about it. So the assumption is that this is the reason why he started taking it. Thats fine except he can say this i am doing this in consultation with his doctor, but he is the leader of the country and people will follow what he does and try to do the same thing. That is the risk of Something Like this. It is a significant risk. And the president was critical of the centers of disease control. But members need to rely on the cdc. Do you worry that the trust in the cdc is now being eroded . Yeah, i do. I do have a lot of friends at the cdc, i will preface by saying that. I have known people who have worked there for decades. They have always been at the forefront, back to ebola, tom was there and n 1 h 1 Richard Boeser was there. There is no question that the cdc has been sidelined during this pandemic. We are hardly hearing from them. Some say that is punishment because they released a flawed test back in the january time frame. But these are some of the best epidemiologists in the world. These are scientists that other departments of health from around the world rely on to take this virus and say how will it behave in real world situation. Can my kids go to summer camp . Do my kids go to school in the fall . Its unfortunate. I am asking these questions. These are the guys i would normally go to and it is hard to get information from them. We dont hear from them. Normally they would be giving Daily Press Briefings to inform everyone about what is going on. Maggie, its hard to keep track of who the president is blaming. He often blames president obama, the World Health Organization, china. But for the first few months he had nothing but praise for president xi of china. There are legitimate reasons for him to be unhappened with w. H. O. And with china and their information. But the president was making many of the same statements and continued to play down the threat of this virus. We have lots of video of him doing that. In a number of videos he accused the democrats of using criticism of him as a new hoax. I think the president will have to grapple with the fact there is a long body of history of him making statements about the virus similar to what he is now blaming others for doing. Again, more than one thing can be true at once. But the president doesnt generally allow that to be the case. Its interesting, sanjay because late last night the president put out a letter to the World Health Organization threatening to end all funding to the organization. But how much of his criticism is based on real fact . I agree with how maggie framed it. There was some surprises in terms of information flow at the beginning. As a journalist covering this. There were certain markers. Is this a human transmitted disease. Important markers. And there was information slow, waiting to call it a virus of concern. We called it a pandemic before the World Health Organization did. The World Health Organization is integral to helping lead us out of it. Some of it is Clinical Trials bying a gby ing a gating data from around the world. There are a lot of the countries dependent on the World Health Organization to bolster them up during a pandemic. There should be a postmortem at some point, but now is not the time. Everyone gets punished by punishing the World Health Organization, everyone on the planet. Maggie, a signature move making an attention grabbing statement. But what if he totally cuts off all funds to the w. H. O. They have been paying 400 million or 500 million a year. He has a history of these threats that dont happen until they do. When the president debates what to do, he takes polls. There were a people on the media making pleas with the president. He was tweeting over the weekend he wasnt sure what he was doing and now he seems to come back to his original position. It would be a dramatic move if he took it. Thanks to you both. A quick programming note, this sunday, an investigation on when the pandemic was born. Just ahead, the city of miami and part of disney world are just hours away from reopening. The state of florida may have been slow to shut down, but its reopening in a big way with new milestones ahead. Miami is now joining the rest of the state in reopening. What will that look like . Reporter wolf, miami is one of the last cities to open because it was one of the hardest hit. But starting tomorrow it will join the rest of the state. Retail stores will open to about 50 capacity. Fitting rooms will be closed. Barber shops, salons and nails will be open, by appointment only. Employees working close to one another and customers will have to wear clear facemasks. Also limited capacity inside and they will be installing, if they can, the plexiglas barrier between seats in salons as well. Parks will be open for exercise, walking, jogging. They dont want people to congregate. And office space will be reopening again. Tenants will have to wear facemasks and sanitize their hands when entering the building and cubicles will be six feet apart. Gyms will remain closed because gyms around the rest of the state did reopen to 50 capacity as well as restaurants, 50 capacity up from 25 capacity. North of here, orlando, disney is taking its first step in reopening as well. An area called Disney Springs which is their area for food and entertainment. The theme park will remain closed. Guests at Disney Springs will have to wear face coverings and they will do temperature tests. Anyone with a temperature of 100. 4 or more will be turned away. We will watch it closely. Lets go to california. The mayor of San Francisco is joining us. I want to get your Quick Reaction to the president s decision to defend his decision to take this drug hydroxychloroquine despite the fda saying it has not been shown to be safe in treating or preventing the coronavirus. Should your people follow the president or the fda . The people of San Francisco stopped listening to the president a long time ago. This is a pandemic. People are hurting financially. This is a health crisis. We have real work to do. The fact he continues to be a distraction rather than focus on solutions and protect the people of this country is not something we should allow us to be distracted from the real issues. The president did tweet that 700 million will be sent to San Francisco to support the airport and mass transit. He said that will aid in recovery as well. Is he right . We got that money sometime ago through the cares act. Speaker pelosi and others who fought for that money in this region. That money was received and we are grateful for that. We need more and we need Something Like the heroes act passed so we can get more money into the people who are suffering. Folks whose businesses arent going to be able to open soon. We are facing a huge budget deficit, over 54 billion in the state of california alone. It is important we Work Together so we dont have to deal with longterm Economic Impacts that will destroy the american economy. I am told as of yesterday 95 of the Retail Businesses in San Francisco were able to reopen for Curbside Pickup and delivery. You have been cautious throughout this pandemic. What makes you comfortable to take this partial step to reopen . What i have said from the beginning was we would look to our Public Health officials and their recommendations would be our guide. They have been great so far in helping us to not only curb but slightly reduce the curve. We are in a better place so we know we can gradually reopen and provide opportunity for these Small Businesses suffering. We hope to do more. The people of San Francisco have been incredible. Because the majority of them are complying, we are able to take things a step further. What we have seen in this city, 2,179 cases of covid19, 32 deaths, 62 hospitalized. We see the numbers declining around hospitalizations. We are grateful for that and its because of the people of San Francisco that we are able to give baet back to business s than later. Other parts of california have opened sooner than San Francisco. Are you comfortable with the speed your state has reopened . We are a more dense city. We have different challenges than a place like napa county and other places. There is not a one size fits all here. It has to do with the data and what we are facing here in San Francisco. We have provided a guideline for ppe and Contact Tracing so we can begin to move into reopening San Francisco safely. The worst we can do is move too quickly and see the curve spike too quickly and not have the Hospital Capacity to handle it. I think the pace we are moving would i like to see it move faster . Yes. But i have a bigger responsibility and thats the people of San Francisco, to make sure we are cautiously moving forward to protect the residents much this city. These are life and death decisions mayors and governors have to make. Mayor, thank you so much for joining us. Just ahead, does it make sense for some colleges to open in the fall only to return to online classes after thanksgiving . And maybe one of the riskier things you do once you finally get out of the house. The chances of getting the coronavirus in a public restroom. So whats going on . Im a talking dog. The other issue. Oh. Im scratching like crazy. Youve got some allergic itch with skin inflammation. Apoquel can work on that itch in as little as 4 hours, whether its a new or chronic problem. And apoquels treated over 7 million dogs. Nice. And. The talking dog thing . Is it bothering you . No. Itching like a dog is bothering me. Until dogs can speak for themselves, you have to. When allergic itch is a problem, ask for apoquel. Apoquel is for the control of itch associated with allergic dermatitis and the control of Atopic Dermatitis in dogs. Do not use apoquel in dogs less than 12 months old or those with serious infections. Apoquel may increase the chance of developing serious infections and may cause existing parasitic skin infestations or preexisting cancers to worsen. Do not use in breeding, pregnant, or lactating dogs. Most common side effects are vomiting and diarrhea. Feeling better . Im speechless. Thanks for the apoquel. Awww. Thats what friends are for. Ask your veterinarian for apoquel. Next to you, apoquel is a dogs best friend. Confident financial plans, calming financial plans, complete financial plans. Some colleges are announcing they will reopen their colleges to students this fall, but will end classes at thanksgiving over fears of the virus. Thanks for joining us. What do you think of these colleges considering bringing students back early in the fall so they can wrap up a semester before thanksgiving. How can schools from college utilize the school year if the school year becomes so shortened. Universities are in a bind right now. A lot of what they bring to the table is being able to sit on the quad and sit in the dorm room and have those late night krngss. Conversations. This when we get back to flu season, or maybe it will be called covid19 season now. But they realize they may have to go to straight to virtual or some hybrid. They are using the Video Conferencing software. A lot of schools are using tools and platforms and trying to digitize as quickly as they can. It is a tough scenario because there are four or five ways this could go. The president s of notre dame, rice, both told cnn they are pri prioritizing bringing students back to school safely. Is there a way to do online . I would always take an inperson interaction with an amazing teacher versus an online situation. You may have to go in that direction because of emergencies like this. You get the best of both worlds during school is where students can learn at their own time and pace. But how do we leverage humans when they are in the room together. If they have to shut down physically, when they are using other tools like Video Conferencing, how can you replicate as much of that person to person contact. But there is nothing like talking to a professor after class and doing it online. Do you expect this to do the same thing for Elementary Education . I think so. I just talked to the superintendent at miamidade and he was talking about his planning for back to school. He sees a world where certain students will want to be in that physical experience like it always was and others will want a hybrid experience, and for certain kids, they may need more of virtual. In that world where you are catering to different use cases, even the physical experience has to be blended. You will have to put a camera in the classroom. And coming back, whether Higher Education or k through 12. Some kids come monday, wednesday and some tuesday, thursday. To support the kids not in the room, you will have to be blended with virtual all of the time. Thanks. Just ahead, we will take a look at the steps being taken to keep public bathrooms safe and to allow for social distancing. announcer in this world where people are staying at home, many of lifes moments are being put on hold. At carvana, we understand that, for some, getting a car just cant wait. To help, were giving our customers up to 90 days to make their first payment. As businesses and shared spaces reopen, Health Experts are warning about the poesh for public bathrooms to spread the virus. Brian todd is joining us with details. What are you learning . Wolf, were told that public bathrooms with their commonly touched services and droplets flying around can be key breeding grounds for the virus, so the question is how are businesses going to handle their bathrooms. Tonight, as more americans clamber to get back to their restaurant, movie theaters and malls, theres one element Health Experts are keeping a close eye on. The public restroom. A place they say can be a a petry dish for diseases like coronavirus. You may have many people who are not able to stay six feet apart and because of the bathroom, you have so many high contact surfaces. Things like taps, soap dispenners, flush handles. And they say some of those features in Public Restrooms we thought were sanitary are now potential transmitters. The hand drying blower is a wonderful machine to spread germs and air soaerools and droplets throughout the room and another key thing is that when you flush a toilet, the act of flushing a toilet is actually an aerosol generating device of fee c cal matter. Bathroom safety is on the mind of proprietors and customers alike. The own r of the drive in theatre in ohio told the Washington Post bathroom safety was the number one concern people had on our facebook page. So i had to take action to make them comfortable. A Restaurant Owner to houston is enforcing bathroom distancing. I have an attendant where he or she stands outside the restrooms and only one person goes in at a time. Another option try ied in europe, touch free. Not only the flush, hand drier and sink touch free, but it disinfects after each person. Removing doors from bathroom entrances like many airports have done so people wont have to touch them. Mcdonalds has a new rule that bathrooms will be cleaned ef half hour. Changes that will cost them a lot of money to make, but which could make the difference in whether theyre businesses will survive. One would be installing a simple feature. Many public bathrooms have toilets that dont have lids which means youre pull iing th flush and generating this midst of dropleting without being able to contain that safely. Should some establishments shut down completely or should we stop using the bathrooms in restaurant sns. The main reason people go to the bathroom in restaurants is to wash their hands and so i think we do not want to discourage people from washing their hands. But Public Health experts say many establishments could take months or years to overhaul their bathrooms to meet some of o the new sanitation standards so in the meantime, theyre recommending people do things like bring their own toiletry kits to public bathrooms and restaurants. Maybe bring Hand Sanitizer or wipes and they recommend people wear masks when people go into public bathrooms. Its a whole new world. Thanks very much. Well have more new right after this.
