Me live to respond. President trump has never been shy about sharing his opinion but for 12 days, he mostly doned questions on gop Senate Candidate for alabama roy moore. That changed with dramatic effect on tuesday was a startling president ial endorsement for a man accused of Sexual Assault by women when they were teens. Several women have come forward. One of them says she was just 14 years old at the time. The president however dismissing their accounts in favor of moores denials. Roy moore denies it. What about the women . By the way he gives a total denial and i do have to say, 40 years is a long time. Hes run eight races and this has never come up. So 40 years is a long time. The women are trump voters. Most of them are trump voters. All you can do is you have to do what you have to do. Cnns senior White House Correspondent jeff zeleny is in West Palm Beach where the president is spending the holidays. Youre learning this was a deliberate decision by the president himself. It was indeed. This is something the president im told has been talking about for the last several days inside the west wing with his advisers as so much else has been playing out on the National Stage about these allegations of sexual misconduct, about these allegations of sexual abuse. This is something that the situation changed from 12 days or so ago at least in the eyes of the president in terms of it became muddled with all the noise and confusion. He also im told you know, saw some similarities to his own president ial campaign. Saw similarities to the accusations made against him which he denied, of course, back in 2016. More importantly than anything else, this is politics. The white house certainly wants to keep that seat in republican hands and also saw that roy moore was not going anywhere, he was defiant and standing firm. So despite what the republican establishment was doing, everyone urging him to drop out of the race, the president sided with his base anddon something that was probably expected all along. He decided to try and split the difference here but by going with moore, he keeps himself rather on the same side as some of his supporters down in alabama and elsewhere, jim. Going with roy moore and dismissing accounts of those women. Jeff zeleny following the president. Thanks very much. Lets get perspective from democratic senator chris coons of Delaware Joining me live from wilmington. Thanks for taking the time during the thanksgiving holiday. Id like your reaction to this remarkable statement from the president. In effect not only saying he backs roy moore for the seat but saying in effect he dismisses the accounts of these women in favor of moores denials. Well, jim, there have been a number of striking very manies in recent days about very senior figures in entertainment and in Politics Around allegations of sexual abuse and harassment. Its my hope our country is on the verge of a real reckoning with what is a long and tragic history of widespread misbehavior by men in various professional settings. Obviously, our president is someone who in the course of his campaign was accused by. Women of sexual abuse and was caught on tape bragging about a Sexual Assault incident. So im struck that hes choosing to weigh in to this particular matter. As for roy moore, as the vice chairman of the Senate Ethics committee, i shouldnt comment on anything specific to mr. Moore because he may well end up in a matter that may at some point come before the Ethics Committee. Let me ask you this. You have heard some republicans say well, let him win the election and well expel him and then the republican governor of alabama can appoint a republican replacement. They get their republican senator, their vote for tax reform. Speaking to your republican colleagues, is there talk of that or plans being made to do that if moore is to win the seat . Jim, think there is Supreme Court precedent that makes it fairly clear that unless there is some disqualification of someone elected duly elected by a state will be seated. At that point, there may then be an Ethics Committee process. I shouldnt comment further. Lets talk about tax reform because clearly, the president s stating quite clearly that in effect, hes choosing tax reform as the priority here saying he needs that vote. We heard Kellyanne Conway set that up the day before. As youre watching votes there and weve had a couple folks come out, for instance, Lisa Murkowski of alaska saying now shes supported the mandate being repealed as part of this tax reform bill. As youre counting votes, do you believe the republicans have the votes to pass this tax plan as it stands . As it was with Health Care Reform with aca replace and repeal back in august, i think this will be a very close vote. It will be a squeaker. Ive heard from a number of republican colleagues, friends, that they have real concerns about blowing up the deficit and the debt. This bill is projected to add at least 1. 5 trillion to americas debt. And theres a number of folks i think in both parties who had far prefer to do a deficit neutral tax bill that would lower corporate rates, that would increase investment in infrastructure, that would expand child tax credits. Do a number of things that could command real bipartisan support. If republicans continue to insist on moving ahead with a republican only budget buster bill, i think it will be very close and it may well fail in the end. Let me ask you this. Your fellow senator from delaware gave us his insight into a meeting between white house officials and senate democrats. Senator tom carper saying on our air that the president called into the meeting from his asia trip and that carper says as the president was doing more talking than listening, he gave this advice to economic adviser carry cone. Have a listen. And i said gary, why did you do this . Why dont you just take the phone from your cell phone back and just say, mr. President , youre brilliant. And but were losing contact. I think were going to lose you now. So goodbye. Thats what he did and he hung up. Are you saying gary cohn faked a bad connection to get the president off the phone . I wouldnt i dont want to throw him under the bus, but yes. Well, definitive account there. I believe you were in the meeting, as well. What did you hear . Well, jim, there were a dozen Democratic Senators who came in good faith to have a conversation with gary cohn and mark short about how we might find a bipartisan path forward on tax reform. I appreciated that the president took the time to call in to our meeting. And ill say its accurate that the president talked a great deal and there were a number of us who had suggestions we wanted to make about ways we could move towards bipartisan path on tax reform. I want to turn now if i can to the russia investigation, the attorney for senior white house adviser Jared Kushner is accused the Senate Judiciary committee of in his words playing a gotcha game. This even as kushner is accused again of not revealing documents, meetings, et cetera that hes been asked for. Youre a member of the Judiciary Committee. Whats your response to kushners lawyers claim . Jim, this is just the latest in a series of events where senior officials in the Trump Administration initially claimed they have had no contact whatsoever of any kind with russians. Then when reminded or informed of information about specific meetings with russians, they say oh, well, yes, except for that meeting. And then try and say that it was it was a neutral meeting or meeting that didnt produce much in the way of results. Theyve had to antidepressant and amend and amend their initial filings. Jared is one of several senior Trump Administration officials failed to fully disclose their communications whether with wikileaks, with russians or with individuals who claimed they represented russians with information that might be helpful to the campaign. I think its time for us to bring Jared Kushner before the committee and to have him testify so that the American Public can make up their mind whats going on here and whos being truthful. It may be the case as kushners lawyer argues that in the specific email chain thats being discussed now, that kushner was discouraging a meeting with russians to get information from wikileaks. Thats quite a different thing than his initial position that there were no such meetings or that he had fully disclosed all such meetings. Thats right. Did he accept that meeting, the famous meeting in trump tower in which we now know russians offered damaging information on Hillary Clinton in advance that have meet. Theres abeen a lot of concern that partisan differences are really getting in the way of the work they need to do. Youre on the Judiciary Committee. I know you have some disagreements with your republican colleagues. But are you and republicans or democrats and republicans on the Judiciary Committee still able to be investigate this in the aggressive way that they are charged to do . Our progress has really slowed, jim. The coordination, the cooperation between our chair and Ranking Member has frayed somewhat as they have different priorities for what sorts of information and witnesses they want to pursue. I believe the Senate Intelligence committee continues to make progress. The house Intelligence Committee as you know and widely reported has had a real on again, off again progress because of some missteps by devon nunez, the initial chair of their investigation. At the end of the day, my top concern is that robert mueller, former fbi director, career Law Enforcement official respected republican, be able to conduct and complete his investigation without harassment or interference. I think it is equally important on the Judiciary Committee, we be able to do our job of oversight of the department of justice. I have recently sent a letter to the attorney jen which has not yet received a reply in several weeks, for example, asking about the abrupt firing of dana bent ta, number four in the department of justice, the Eastern District of virginia, u. S. Attorney. There are reasons we should continue to ask questions and bring in witnesses in front of the Judiciary Committee. Im concerned, jim, we are slowing in our progress. Let me ask you this, the day before thanksgiving but im not going to let you off the hook. Did gary cohn in meeting with Democratic Senators discussing tax reform bill did he fake a bad connections to get the president off the phone . Well, i remember it a little differently. It was a long call. It was clear that there was some eagerness in the room for us to resume our conversation. We heard a lot from the president. I do remember senator carper making that suggestion. I dont think gary cohn abruptly hung up on the president but it was a challenge to transition him off the call. And i think gary cohn handled it appropriately. A challenge to transition him off the call. Diplomatic phrasing there, senator chris coons. Let me wish you and your family a happy fantastic. Thank you, jim. I hope as we move toward thanksgiving well remember our fellow citizens in puerto rico and the virgin i lads and be supportive of folks who need our assistance at thanksgiving. Thank you. Agreed very much. Good words, senator chris coons, thanks very much. Ivanka trump said there is a special place in hell for someone like roy moore. Yet, her father has just endorsed him. It looks like a scene from an action movie with bullets flying and north korean soldier making a daring escape across the boarder to the south. Shot multiple times. He barely makes it 0 safety. All of this caught on closedcircuit television. Cnns brian todd is here to break this down. I cant believe it. No matter how many times i watch this. Tell our viewers how this went down. Well pick it up after he drives his jeep into a ditch. At this point hes already crossed past a north korean command post and driven past it. Soldiers have come out. Theyre aware of it and running toward him. Were going to pick up the video here. Hes in a ditch. You see him getting out of the vehicle here on november 13th a week ago monday. He runs over this way. Look at this. Youve got north korean his fellow soldiers chasing after him here. They come right behind him. Theyre feet behind. Its hard to know the depth. It cant be more than 15 feet. Theyre firing at him. Hes running. How had he dont kill him is astounding. Watch. He gets out of the frame. This soldier hits the ground. Probably purposely to steady his shot. At this point, look at this guy. He comes in. Seemingly with a pistol. He levels it were not sure if he fires or not. If we come over here, you can see other north korean soldiers over here on the right 0 are firing. Those are plumes of smoke. 40 bullets fired at this guy in frantic seconds. Watch, this soldier scrambles across the demarcation line chasing after him. Hes not supposed to do that. Thats a violation of the armistice. He gets about 15 feet across, doubles back. I talked to general marks who says this guy isnt going back because he thinks ive violated the armistice. Hes going back because he could be a target and realizing south korean troops are on the way and they could be shooting at him. Hes running for his life then at this point. Were going to get to this other video. Watch. Look at this. Hes presumably already shot bounding across, full of adrenaline. We think as many as four bullets in him. Its on a loop. He is hoofing it, getting across to the south korean side of the border, presumably having been shot at least once or possibly twice. A still shot of him here lying in a heap by a retaining wall hes already across the border. The doctor said he lost more than half of his blood. Okay . So then were going to get to in this heat sensor video here. These are the figures here. The heat signature from their bodies. Heat signature video. Two south korean soldiers. At this moment, look at that. Looks like one of them has a gun leveled for cover as they crawl toward him. Look at this. Theyre going to pick him up. Theyre going to drag him back toward their side of the border. This is technically on the south korean side. Again, general marks told me at this moment theyre exposed to North Koreans who have a line of sight and a line of fire at them from over here. And the North Koreans coz have easily fired more shots. You would have had excalation. They drag back to safety. Is he airlifted out and then taken to a hospital. Again the doctors saying he lost more han than half his blood. He took at least five shots. Self of them, the doctor said, in the shoulder in the abdomen, in the knee. The one in the abdomen is the one that stayed in his body causing the most damage. The doctor said that one almost killed him. He lost more than half the blood in his body and lucky to be alive right now. Thanks very much. A fascinating it story. A lot to talk about. This is the first time the americanled u. N. Command released security footage of a defection across that demilitarized zone. We can discuss what we can learn from the video. My next guest is a former senior are adviser at the state department. First question is, unusual for the u. S. Led forces there to release a video like this. Is this a message theyre trying to send . That this is actually the United Nations command. And this is something that we often forget because the u. N. Command is still in charge of keeping this armistice and guarding the dmz to make sure both sides dont restart the korean war. Yes, it is unusual. I think its because theres so much speculation and so many rumors and exaggerations that. Could out. This is just to show exactly what occurred. Is we understand the north korean soldiers as we understand particularly the onced stationed at the border are the best fed, the best treated. Want to put on a good face for north korea but make them the most alert and capable. We learned they found he had parasites in his body. This was not a healthy soldier. Can that tell us anything about conditions . It tells us a great deal. Much more about sort of the longterm conditions and really what this regime has done over decades. These parasites that are have not been found anywhere else are actually quite common among those North Koreans that escape north korea. And i suppose the obvious point too is if youre willing to run in the face of gunfire to escape a country, that tells you something about and youre au soldier who has presumably been chosen for loyalty and commitment, thats not a particularly encouraging sign for the state of that regime. No, it is not. On the other hand, we should be very careful about using this one incident as a sign that the whole countrys disintegrating. There have been occasional crossings across. By the way, from the south into the north strangely enough. So i would be much more concerned if theres sort of mass defections of entire divisions or platoons or brigades. Or senior leadership. Thaekt. Thanks very much for putting that into context for us. One programming note. Tonight at 97 00 eastern time, will ripley gives is a rare glimpse of the secret state taking us inside north korea. Its a must watch. Meanwhile, the president is taking his feud with the father ive ucla basketball player to yet another level. Calling him an ungrateful fool and comparing him to don king. The backlash ahead. Plus several republican senators still undecided on the tax bill but did one famous holdout tip her hand . The president is saying quite clearly in fact, that he believes moores denials over the accounts of eight female accusers. But moores opponent doug jones is using the words of others in washington to make his case in this new ad. On roy moores disturbing actions ivanka ruch says theres a special place in hell for people who prey on children. And i have no reason to doubt the victims accounts. Jeff sessions says, i have no reason to doubt these young women. And Richard Shelby says he will absolutely not vote for roy moore. I want to bring in my panel, kong greggs doctor correspondent sunlen serfaty, a. B. Stoddarded from real clear politics. Listen, the contrast between father and daughter here is remarkable. Its not the first time, of course, on other issues. You have the daughter of the president saying theres a special place in hell and the president saying you know what . I dont believe their accounts. How do you react to that. Whats consistent about trumpland is its inconsistency. Donald trump watched the rnc break a an financial fundraising agreement with roy moore. His own spokespeople have said its up to the voters of alabama to decide, not up to us. His daughter said theres a special place in hell for people who prey on children. Hes gone on to say its been 40 years and hes denied it. This is what happens. He doesnt he isnt a team player and doesnt stay on message. Obviously given his own particular situation facing 16 or so allegations of harassment and other claims, he i think is most comfortable defending moore. Its an interesting aspect he said Something Like theyre trump voters. He has this thing about believing hes going to hang with his voters no matter who they defend, no matter what the case. That ad, that doug jones ad is high quality trolling using the two seminars from alabama and the daughter. On this story but its not the first time you want to shake your head, right . Its that question weve reacheded after a number of controversies like this. What is beyond the pale, right . Is multiple accusations, apparently not. Multiple accusations from women who at the time they were teenagers, thats not enough for this president to back away from republican candidates. Something i just wonder youre up on the hill a lot. Do you hear republicans who are upset with this . Well, i mean its interesting. This is always the case for this presidency and this moment in time. You have republicans on a daily basis do not want to be confronted with things that the president says. Tweets that the president tweets. I think this case is different. You have the Republican Leadership, mitch mcconnell, paul ryan backing away from moore here. You have them saying that they believe the side of the women. And thats what made his comments yesterday on the south lawn of the white house even more remarkable, the fact that he was not only basically throwing had i support behind moore but saying in essence he doesnt believe the women. He believes the judge over the women. And so that certainly puts him at odds with the republican establishment. Of course, he likes to be at odds with the republican establishment. No surprise there. In effect, you hear this from the president. You heard this from Kellyanne Conway when she said a similar thing the day before. Is that the president and those republicans are beak trading tax reform for you know, the suffering of these women, right . In effect saying a vote for tax reform is more posh than whatever happened. We dont believe them by the way. I wonder if Republican Voters, you know, thats their feeling, as well. Right . Is the president in line with his voters here . You know, i spent some time in alabama not long ago prior to some of these latest allegations. Speaking to Republican Voters ahead of the last election there and what i really heard from people is a rejection of what sunday lynn talked about of republican establishments. Names i heard most often was a loathing of Senate Majority leader mitch mcconnell. In that instance now, i dont know if at the end of the day the Republican Voters of alabama or the voters at large will go ahead and say the voices of these women who have come out and said that roy moore either pursued them as teenagers or assaulted them matters less than having a republican house, i dont know if theyll say this. I think there is something to the idea that theyre willing to accept anything not the status quo. Every single republican and democratic lawmaker is going to be asked if theyre comfortable having that man brokering des with him and working with him on legislation. Moores lawyers made the argument its a conspiracy between the gop establishment and the accusers. Somehow they got around a table and decided to take him down. I want to talk about something else. The president before he went out golfing tweeted renewing his fight with lavar ball. You saw these tweets this morning accusing lavar ball of being a poor mans version of dob king but without the hair. Again claiming credit singlehandedly for releasing them. I wonder as you look, its hard not to see a racial component to those tweets. It is difficult. I think its difficult mostly because if you look at the president s past comments and reactions hes spent a lot of type having high profile spats with africanamerican athletes and public figures. Also this morning he tweeted talking about again about the largely black members of the nfl who have choseton kneel in protest of Police Brutality on the sidelines of games. Theres another layer that is important. Were learning how the president sees gratitude and public admiration. He is someone who doesnt back down from a fight. He wants to be gratified for things, wants to be acknowledged and thanked. When he wasnt thanked he didnt like the answer he got. He then turned around and said these players should have been left in yale instead. I think thats really. In democratic country, china, a u. S. Adversary, abie, perhaps the same question we were talking about moore. Does trump have his finger on what the majority of Republican Voters feel about for instance the ucla basketball players or is he on an island with this . Hes playing on a resentment that many of his voters have towards who they feel are professional entitled athletes. The sales im told of nfl merchandise went down more than 70 following trumps fiveday nfl you know, binge whatever he started the morning after he threatened nuclear war against north korea and he started again on that sunday and went on. His voters respond to this. He also uses culture wars as a diversion. Whenever the plot thickens on Jared Kushner talking to mueller or anything like that that looks like negative press, he goes right back to this kind of thing because i think it works and it stokes his base and his base is all he cares about. Hes not a president of persuasion. Hes protecting his 35 . And thats his priority. We did though did we not, sunlen, see the limits of that if you look at the virginia election. It is true virginia has been trending blue for some time. Particularly the suburban districts around washington, it was an enormous advantage for the democratic candidate, the perception being some of that was reaction to trump. By the way, the Atlanta Senate race, roy moore still may win. It should be a give me for the Republican Party. Youre seeing the limits, arent you, of that. Thats right. Going back to moore, great reporting from our team the fact that trump still thinks moore can win here. Thats why in essence he is endorsing him, and he doesnt want to be on the wrong side again in the senate race. Thats a big factor thats going into play thats an important seat, the politics of the senate very much in his mind. The polls show still a tight race. Thanks very much for all this. President trump coming up, the president all but endorsing roy moore. Will republicans jump on board in public . We discuss this and much more right after this. Then we found out how many years that money would last them. How long do you think well keep oooooohhh you stopped youre gonna leave me back here at year 9 . How did this happen . It turned out, a lot of people fell short, of even the average length of retirement. We have to think about not when we expect to live to, but when we could live to. Lets plan for income that lasts all our years in retirement. Prudential. Bring your challenges. Im never gonna be able ill take a sick day tomorrow. On our daughters birthday . Moms dont take sick days. Moms take nyquil severe. The nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, fever, best sleep with a cold, medicine. President trump wants the people of alabama to vote for roy moore for senate even though hes been accuses of child molestation. Why . Because moores opponent is a democrat. Here listen for yourself. I can tell you one thing for sure. We dont need a liberal person in there, a democrat. We do not need somebody thats going to be bad on krip, bad on borders, bad with the military. Bad for the second amendment. The president s endorsement defies Republican Leaders who have called for moore to step down and begs the question at what point do morals come before politics. With me to help answer that is republican congressman francis rooney, a florida congressman. Thank you for taking the time particularly on this difficult subject. You heard the president s words yesterday. Not only tacitly supporting moore but dismissing really the accounts of these women based on moores denials. Whats your reaction . Theres too much smoke for there not be some fire. I watched the clip about one of the ladies that came forward and how. Agonized many years what to do about it. It seems most everybody thats heard these kinds of things seems to line up unanimously this guy is a bad guy. The president seemed to say its been 40 years. Youll often hear that when women come out, why did they wait as if it would be a pleasant experience for a woman to tell the story. I think its very difficult for these people to do that. I would rather him not be serving in the United States congress with that kind of background. Let me ask you this. Reacting to the president s decision here. If this isnt a disqualifying offense, what is . This is a pretty bad disqualifying offense. I agree with the president s frustration about having a solid republican seat go to a democrat. I said on cnn the other day, my wish list would be that he win and is indicted and made to resign and we get a better republican appointed by the republican governor. You want to see roy moore win a senate seat regardless of what happens . I wouldnt want to see him stay in the senate. You want him to win . I would rather have a republican senator. I think the president s very frustrated about that, as well. You would rather have a republican senator accused and you just said that you believe theres fire here. As long as i knew he was not going to serve, that he would be dealt with severely and made to resign immediately. How can you get that guarantee . Is there any plan in place to do that if he wins. You would have to know there was an indictable offense. Sounds like some of this stuff hot to be inindictable. I dont know how long the statute of limitations go on, but these are pretty heen news offenses hes charged with. With no guarantee thats what would happen if he were to win and be seated, youre in effect saying that you would take a republican accused of this behavior. Only if i absolutely, if we absolutely knew he was never going to serve. Its a pipe dream. I think the risk of this guy serving is too great to support having him win. So what would you like to see republicans do . I would like to see republicans continue to lead a moral regeneration of our country. I think this whole moral degradation were suffering crosses many fronts, whether its pro Football Players whether its hate crime people like the White Supremacists and antifa people and now this sex crimes across would, across business, across politics is just overwhelming. Is the president helping or hurting fighting that as you say moral degradation. Its up to the president to decide what he wants to do. I would have rather just seen no support for roy moore myself. You have a daughter. You have a granddaughter. I have a daughter, as well. You must watch this with particular emotional reaction, i imagine, as well to see someone accused of this. You seem to have a pattern of preying on girls in their teens. It is very, very its emotional to me but its emotional in a broader sense, too. I was an ambassador of the vatican. I believe we have a plorl duty to lead and have a moral conscience in our country. Thats how our country was set you. We were the people looking for the city on the hill. Weve got to get back to that. How does the Republican Party take leadership in doing that if the republican president is endorsing a man like roy moore . Well, i think theres some things we can do. I think we can work to restore Work Opportunities into welfare and entitlements as president clinton and Newt Gingrich did. I know entitlement reform is a position. Is reform actually helping with a case like this where a guys been accused . Nothing helps with a case like this. In the broad brush of hup dignity that comes with work is something we can do for people to broaden opportunities. Im asking you directly, do you think the president s position on this and other positions is hurting the countrys moral standing . Well, i dont think its i dont think it does any good to come out and defend this guy with all this accused accusations made even though they were 40 years ago. I wonder if privately on obviously, it may be difficult for republicans to make public statements that contradict the president vehemently and in public. In private on the hill, do you hear deep concern how this race is going and the ezs endorsement and the very the possibility that moore might very well be seated in the senate . I think yao what have see and reported on is pretty accurate. Nobody that ive heard wants to see a person with this background in the United States congress. Including me. Well, i want to ask you if i can before i let you go, the Trump Administrations decision to end protected status for haitians. Florida took in a lot of haitians after the horrible earthquake in 2010. The designation was intended to be temporary. Why now in your view . Why are they doing this now. It was due to expire in march or earlier. He extended once to march. Its really kind of a bizarre policy to say to these people, you can come here on a temporary protected status and stay for maybe as many as 20 years and then were going to kick you out . I know the haitians in our community. Theyre good people. Hard workers, important members of our community. I hope we have the twoyear window to figure something out. Perhaps in the nature of work permits and perhaps in the nature of Immigration Reform which beefs up our security and makes america feel again so we can find a better answer. So you dont want them forced to go home. I would hate to lose them. One of the issues we have to face after tax reform is if we want to get the full benefits of it to ignite growth in our country, we have to deal with the workplace. We need career Technical Education so we have jobs that can be done by the people that have the skills to do the jobs we have now. We need to have work permits for people to do jobs that no one wants to do in america. The agricultural industry, Construction Industry and the Hospitality Industry is crying out for h2 visa people. Congress rooney, thanks for taking the time. Let me take this chance to wish you and your family a happy nafg. Thank you for having me on. A massacre unfolding before the worlds eyes as militants murder thousands belonging to a rngs minority and now the u. S. Making a major declaration. What i want, youve got, but it might be hard to handle like the flame that burns the candle the candle feeds the flame topped steak twisted potatoes at applebees. And leave more debt to our kids. Keep your word. Tax cuts shouldnt add to the National Debt. Secretary of state Rex Tillerson is formally calling violence against a group of minority muslims in myanmar ethnic cleansing. Its a term hes refused to use previously, only saying he was very concerned by reports about the actions of myanmars military. Those reports find that in the last three months alone after a Million People have fled myanmar to neighboring bangladesh to avoid simply being murdered simply, again, for being muslim. In an exclusive report, survivors detailed their stories of mass murder and rape. One woman told us she escaped from a mass grave only to be raped by soldiers and locked in a house that was then set on fire. These are facts. I want to bring if michelle kosinski. Michelle, quite a strong statement from secretary of state tillerson after a delay. It is. Its saying something powerful but you could also say its saying in the a very gentle way. Its not as if the secretary of state comes out before cameras and announces this. In fact, they buried the lede. The state department isnt blaming anyone in particular. They only refer to some elements of the military, Security Forces or other vigilante groups and theyre not blaming the burmese government. The way it works there now, theres a power sharing agreeme agreement between the civilian government which is very, very new and the military so the state department sees the government as not having a whole lot of control over much. Is that a fair because, i mean, there have also been questions about Aung San Suu Kyi herself not calling out the military activities. The state Department Says they continue to push the government to do more but the state department has also been worried according to sources that if the u. S. Came out right away and called this ethnic cleansing or worse that it would lead to massive unrest there and then that new democracy thats only 18 months old, if you want to call it a democracy, could just be taken over by the military. Theyve been worried about that. What does this do then . Well, theyre considering more sanctions against some individuals. They see this as putting pressure on both the government and the military to stop the violence and come to an agreement about letting these people back into their country. And they see it as adding urgency. But, lets talk about urgency here. This is a full two months after the u. N. Secretary general said that this was a textbook case of ethnic cleansing. Its three months after the violence started and granted its complicated. The u. S. Sees the violence starting from an attack by a rohingya militant group that the state department considers terrorists so what this actually shows by calling it ethnic cleansing is that in todays world ethnic cleansing still happens and the world cant come up with an acceptable intervention. Those people have been suffering for a long time. Michelle kosinski, thanks very much. Now a desperate search under way as a u. S. Navy plane crashes in the pacific and yet another incident. The details right after this. Talking about what hurts and property taxes, eating dry pie. Woah. Go over there the kids will accept you, eventually. Add experience to the table.
