Of research on families who live in inner cities, one of the differences between rural and urban poverty is in an urban setting in the south bronx, chances are if you are a child you see people in middle class or get onto the subway every day and go to jobs. If you are living on the pine ridge reservation, you may not have anyone in your immediate family with any kind of employment. You may not have anyone in your immediate family who is not, you do, as a problem with drug or alcohol use. You may not have anybody who has a high school education. There are all of these aspects of life that seem normal to most middleclass americans that would seem like life on another planet to some of the People Living in these communities. The isolation is one part of it. In terms of the advantages, its not as if the people who are living on these reservations whewould emit a say move to rapd city and find themselves rolling in dough. Even if you had the wherewithal to leave the reservation, you would still be, for instance, come at it with an inferior education so you would be trying to get yourself into a work force. There be more opportunities for employment but you may not be very qualified for any of those opportunities because of the disadvantages you had up until that point. In terms of what rights, thats an interesting question. There are Many Americans dont realize American Indians are american citizens. That is kind of a fundamental thing the wacko rent talking to audiences, i think some of this talk you about tribal sovereignty actually has this impact on his audience what they think weight, are you like a citizen of another country . Are you part of United States rexnord indians are american citizens and so such they should all these rights. In fact when you look at it and i didnt get into this too much because this is both about the economics of the book gets into all these questions about what the actual right are that theyre being denied. So for instance, freedom on the press on some of his reservations is severely restricted. If the tribe does not like what a local newspaper has written about some tribal law that has been passed or something that theyve said about tribal legislators, they will ban could bend the newspaper from being sold anywhere on the reservation. There have been and is just a Supreme Court case this year about the rights of people in tribal court and theres a question about whether you have been granted due process in a tribal court. The association for defense lawyers in the United States has asked written several letters to congress complaining that people who have been accused in certain kinds of cases have not been granted the right to a lawyer, have not been granted the right to speedy trial pick all of these things we take for granted in the rest of the course the United States as a resident of an indian territory, you might be denied. And i think the biggest question, im sorry to go once along with your answer, but i think for me one of the biggest questions about the rights being denied to engines has to do with indian Child Welfare act. You may be familiar with, which actually gives tribes a say in custodial battles over children. So in cases of divorce, and cases of the death of prepared, even in case of an indian woman might get pregnant and she might want to give her child up for adoption to another family. A tribe could come in and say if youre a child who has a drop of ink in blood essential in you, the tribe could say no, we dont think that you should be raised by white family members. No, we dont think that pregnant mother should be able to get from her child by adoption to a white family. A lot of these decisions are being made differently for indian children than they are for children of any other race. They are not being, the cases of not being decided in the best interest of the child which is of course the standard for any of the case. They are being decided what in the best interest of the tribe. Those are some of the rights that i think are really being aside from economic rights as talking by, the economic freedom. Those are some of the rights that american citizens have that a lot of American Indians unfortunate do not. You can watch this and other programs online at booktv. Org
