Very easy to focus on the grand battles of the war but this is a part that people need to know about. This is a part that affected civilians. This is a part that affected the people back home. And in many ways what happened in galveston and in texas was typical of what happened across the south. Particularly in seaports that were blockaded during the war. There was a continual, there was a continual Union Federal Navy Presence offshore, there were regular bombardments of the town. There was, you know excitement when a blockade runner would arrive. But its and there was lots of hardship. Lots of they did without a great deal. But it is, its something that people need to know about. Its another aspect of the war thats maybe not as heroic not as dramatic. Its part of the war thats very hard to glorify but its an important part of the war because it represents, it represents life as lived by a lot of people 150 years ago. For more information on booktvs recent visit to galveston, texas, and the many other cities visited by our local content vehicles, go to cspan. Org localcontent. Author van hipp talks about his views on how to effectively deal with terrorism today next on booktv, its for serious readers television for serious readers. [applause] a little bit higher, if thats all right. Smiling faces, we love to see you here. The east room is duplicative, you know a replica of the east room of the white house. Only one difference, it has an opening to the expansion in the back if it gets too crowded in here. And that does happen occasionally. As many of you know the nixons were great travelers because of our heritage in general. We were always encouraged to go places meet people and be quiet. [laughter] dont can, dont say a word dont say a word until you know a little bit about who youre talking to. So i wont say much here tonight because i dont know all of you that well. But i do know that most you have an interest in the topic of the day and the night extraordinarily important to all of us, and i want to encourage all of you to pick up this book that were introducing. Ive, ive traveled, as i said, all over the United States, all the states many times, but theres one state in particular that you just cant get past. Its always stood out there. Its way down south, but among all the states those are the friendly people in the whole country. Theres just no getting around it. Even when i was a student at duke university, wed go down to South Carolina to buy fireworks. [laughter] they were always friendly to us. That might have changed nowadays but the important part is the people. And the people were always hospitable in every which way. You couldnt imagine more friendly people, even those of the opposite political persuasion. They would welcome you hoping that they could change your mind. In our family our mind was made up mostly because the that president on the corner over there was the one that persuaded the nixons way back in the 19th century to change from democrat to republican. And my dad never could get it out of his system. So weve always been republicans in name at least and the rest of it comes naturally. Well, theres a fellow up in the northern part of South Carolina that introduced me to a whole few spectrum of people. Traveling from spartanburg and greenville all the way across the state, through columbia and down to the coast. Up to myrtle beach, places we visited when we were students at duke. The whole state is an aaiz mag amazing amalgam of thinking people. They think. Theyre willing to argue with you, but theyre also willing to listen which was important in our family. Im just, im just amazed when i see these people showing up here tonight. Finish we have our authors family his wife, jane, their two their three children, jackson, trey, sarah camille. I think i got that right. Did i do that right . But youll notice that we also enjoy those double names. All over the south they like two names for a given name. Will[laughter] in our family that wasnt so. Julie and trisha were just julie and trisha. And since we got to this point of meeting somebody in other parts of the south i discovered a very important person who my friends, my former personal assistant in the 72 reelection campaign, tina, and her husband spike. And those folks just gather you in, and you have to do this, you have to do that, you have to meet in this one, you have to meet that one, and you have to get acquainted with them. So i almost became a politician by meeting them, but they did introduce me to this fellow, van hipp. And i tell you, van has hosted me every time i go to South Carolina driving across the state in his fancy jaguar. I dont know if he still has one of those, but doggone, that was a beautiful ride. Anyway, i want you to know that van hipp is one of my closest friends, and i watch him on television every chance i get every time i know about it, ask you ought to get accustomed to doing that yourselves. Van is a very important thinker, and he thinks before he speaks. And when he does say something, pay attention. Its extremely important. And what hes done tonight coming out with this book is extremely important for everybody in the country to read. The rest of the world ought to read it too because were going to wake up. We have to wake up. Its too important to ignore anymore. Van hipp, please come aboard and tell us about what your ideas are. [applause] thank you, ed. And what . I think weve got to get you back down to South Carolina. I know a great Fireworks Store i want to take you to so you can [laughter] were going to get you those fire works. You talk about hospitality, i want to thank the Nixon Library and chris and the staff here for the tremendous hospitality that you have shown me here tonight and all that went into doing this book launch. I really appreciate it. And my dear friend, ed nixon. Ed i appreciate you being here. I think its very appropriate and let me also thank everyone for being here. Ive got so many friends and family. A few years after 9 11 i was i was asleep one night and left the tv on, and all of a sudden they were showing the last interview that president nixon, one of the last interview is the he gave before he passed away. And one of the last questions was, mr. President as we approach the 21st century whoo should americans what should americans be most concerned with . President nixon did not bat an eye, he said the rise of islamic that fanaticism. I got a chill up my spine. But i should not have been surprised, because president nixon in one of his last books seized the moment, wrote, and i quote when he was talking about islamist fundamentalists quote they are motivated by a consuming hatred of the west and a determination to restore the superiority of islamic civilization by resuscitating the past. They seek to impose the sharia, the code of law based on the quran that recognizes no separation of church and state. And i could go on and on. Richard nixon was one of the best Foreign Policy president s this country ever had, and he was a visionary. [applause] it is fitting and proper that the launch of this book, the new terrorism how to fight it and defeat it, is being held here at the Nixon Library tonight. Why a book about this . Those of you who know me, for some time i wrote a lot of articles and did some tv appearances about iran and north korea, the real link between those two countries on their missile technology, their nuclear programs. A good friend of mine who had actually worked in the Reagan Administration helped me a lot to with this book said, you know what van . A lot of books on north korea, a lot of books on rapp, what we need and what on iran, what we need is a book about the totality of the threats to america and what its going to take to keep america safe. And so thats the project ive been working on the last several years, and thats why im here tonight. You know, one of the things whenever youre dealing with terrorism and this world on fire that we live in today you can never take anything for granted. You cant expect the expected. The story is told of thomas e. Dewey who back in 1948 was favored in all of the polls to defeat thenpresident harry truman. Well, on election day went when the latest poll was out predicting a dewey win by landslide proportions, thomas e. Dewey went to his wife and gave her a blank check and said, honey, i want you to go out today and buy the most expensive lingerie money can buy because tonight, tonight youre going to bed with the president of the United States. [laughter] well you know what happened. And she did. And the polls closed the early returns came in. It did not look good for tom dewey, and it only got worse. Well, by about midnight it was obvious truman had won the election. So tom dewey goes up to his hotel suite, the new york waldorf as tore or ya, and there in bed with all her new, beautiful lingerie on just staring at him was his wife. Well tom she said is harry coming over here, or am i going over there . [laughter] [applause] you can never expect the expected, and dont take anything for granted. Make no mistake, make no mistake, the threat of radical islam is the challenge of our time. And were not going to solve it by giving these people a job. The person who kidnapped and beheaded danny pearl was a graduate of the London School of economics. Bin laden came from a very prominent family. And in the book what i do and what i want to talk about tonight, i think its important that we understand the history of radical islam, what motivates islamists and then look at the threats, the real threats to this country from cyber electromagnetic pulse threat, things we need to do to secure our border, you name it. And how can we do this to keep america safe and also do it in such a way that we dont go broke in the process doing it. And thats what i want to do tonight. Its important to understand, like i said the history behind and what motivates radical islamists. Since the 15th century islamic scholars have wanted a return to their version of the good old days the time of the Prophet Muhammad and the caliphate and the first four caliphs. Their belief, the uma which spread its influence to the entire world had come under its way. Infidels would convert and live as second class citizens or be eliminated. The caliphate decline ceased to exist with the destruction of baghdad in 1258. Isis today has declared a caliphate. Over onethird roughly of syria and onethird of iraq. And theyre big on dates. September 11th 1683, the Ottoman Turks were defeated at the gates of vienna. Those kinds of things and thats what theyre trying to do. That meant as much to them, that was a humiliating defeat, almost as much as the in 1492 the spanish when they drove the moors out. Actually palestinen and thats important to realize because 70 of the population of jordan are not jordanians, theyre palestinians. I got to tell you a story. I first met King Abdullah almost 20 years ago when he commanded special forces. Then later on i was invited to go to the palace. When you go to the pala and king hussein was the king at the time. Before you see abdullah theres a family tree on the wall, hanging up, that begins with the prophet moo hamad and goes to king hussein and you see his kids, King Abdullah and so forth. It was put together and researched by a british colonel in the 1930s. I remember sitting there and looking at this, and i looked up and i saw the Prophet Muhammad. And i sue another line over here and you see where some of muhammad reside relatives are marrying other relatives, and i made the comment looks like this line as more of the Prophet Muhammads blood in it to which king an do las aide said you mustnt say these things in the palace. But with him stepping up to the plate, with now the president of egypt, assisi what he is doing we have six moderate arab countries stepping up to the plate, and who better who better on behalf of moderate and reform muslims to take the fight to radical islam than a direct descendent of the prophet. To borrow a line from president nixons book this is opportunity to seize the moment for the United States and show real leadership. We have a problem. Publish the fbi director testified a couple weeks ago that in 49 of the 50 states of the United States right now there are active files, investigations, of people with potential connections to isis. Open cases. Its not just enough to destroy isis militarily. Not just enough to destroy them and defeat them. We have to delegitimatize them so that they do not reconstitute themselves and have the ability to come back. The late general Sandy Davidson was a great fund of mine. The armys best general we had when it came to psychological operations. I never forget a time when i actually there was a humanitarian Christian Organization out of seattle, washington that actually wanted when he pakistan earthquake occurred in 2005, they wanted to get supplies and shelter and so forth to the people there. Long story short, i called up they called me and wanted to donate all this stuff. I called up centcom and spoke to general davidson. He says well get it over here, and i did. And probably wasnt two days later the general said if youre coming over with them to put up the tents. He said i want to see you over here putting up tents so we did. It was great experience for me to work with general davidson and a couple of things happened. I never forget one day we were going to a pretty bad area of pakistan to get there for that days work. And we as we made the turn of this small pakistani village, all of a sudden the van awas in, couldnt guy further. There will 100 people surrounding our van with signs and chants. It didnt look look a good situation. We had a guard with us, who was armed, and and he got out and then got back in. He said theyre doing demonstrations to thank america for what america is doing for them in this earthquake. Something i will never forget. And i learned a lot from general davidson. He was a big fan of the network, a network that our state department has to compete against some of the middle east networks that spew antiamerican venom 24 7. We need to do more to support that network which reaches a lot of young people in that part of the world exposing them to western values and we were ideals. About thing that is interesting, general davidson was fan of a guy named lloyd austin. General austin is the commander of centcom today in 20 2010 we had 90 of isis predecessors organizations, wiped out. General austin want tote leave a small residual force to make sure it diz not reconstitute itself. The president did not listen to general austin and now we have a much bigger problem on our hands. The 9 11 Commission Said that 9 11 was really a failure of imagination. We keep fighting the last war. We keep responding to the last terrorist attack. We have to get ahead of the curve. Isis is a cancer spreading radical islam is a cancer thats spreading. The cia estimates isis has 31,000, 32,000 troops. When you talk to the Kurdish Peshmerga who has been fighting them and other estimates are as high as 200,000. Its cancer spreading. You have to think outside the box. In my book i talk about the country of which has one of the Worlds Largest uranium reserves. What can our rainum be used for . To make muck clear weapons. And in my book i talk about the need to work with france because they got their independence from the french from 1960. The need to work with the french to get those uranium reserves and deposits out of niger. Thats in the big. Two weeks ago guess what happened . Boca haram, direct and basically an indirect affiliate of al qaeda and a terrorist organization trying to mimic and copy isis tactics began border attacks on niger. We have to think outside the box and get ahead of this. What id like to do is talk about these threats. The things we can do, and then also talk about how we do it, like i said in such a way that we dont go broke in the process. Border security is so important. [applause] the fbi director, robert mueller, said in 2011 that 59,000 people were apprehended coming 0 to the United States from countries other than mexico. They included yemen, somalia, iran syria and i can go on and on. 59,000 apprehended. My question where are the ones we did not apprehend . Where are they today and what are they doing in america . Thats why Border Security is so important. And there are things we can do to improve Border Security. The department of Homeland Security Inspector General several years ago looked at the sense of technology to detect people coming across and bad substances such as radio active substances, they found 96 false alarms. The United States military has great censor sensor technology. They need to direct the pentagon to work with our customs and Border Patrol and get that kind of technology in the hands of customs and Border Patrol so we can have a better capability there. Theres also some Great Technology that has been developed by the oil and gas industry, seismic sensors, that can go a long ways to combating and picking up some of these tunnels, and the tunnels are increasing in frequency. We saw recently the situation with france, and the european the radical muslims get mad about because theyre doing a cartoon of muhammad do you remember a few years ago the danish cartoonist who called for the assassination of actually there was an imam who called for his assassination. Who had been banned from france, who had been banned from canada. Called for the assassination of the danish cartoonist. We caught him. You know where . In the back of the trunk of a bmw coming across the mexican border. Border security is so important to this country. We have to know who is coming in here. Another thing that area i think we can improve a lot is port and harbor security. Several years ago, a report on television where British Intelligence had reported that they had indications that al qaeda had gotten underwater ied devices from the North Koreans. And what would you be doing with underwater ied twices . Remember with these folks its all about inflicting harm on our economy, inflicting harm on our economy. There are 250,000 mines out there right now. I talked to in doing the research for the book i talked to a friend of mine who actually commanded two minesweepers. I was shocked to see that we dont have much of a mine countermine measure capability on the east coast of the United States or the gulf of mexico. We have a need to use underwater autonomous vehicles, an underwater uav to do periodic tests in what called the q routes of our sea beds and ports and harbors to look for underwater ieds. Cyber security. Cyber is the what i call is the fifth dimension of warfare. We have air, we have land, we have sea we have space, and now we got cyber. And unlike the other dimensions of warfare its artificial. And i will tell you tonight, the United States is the most unprepared for cyber war than probably any threat facing this country. Its almost like death by a thousand hacks, if you will. The toll this is taking right now on the Financial Institutions of america the increasing attacks on wall street and our Financial Institutions is getting out of hand. And we in the book i distinguish between the different types of Cyber Attacks. The chinese usually its more about espionage. They want to steal your ip. The islamists, the iranians, its about sabotage. They want to take your systems down. And so how we deal with a different type of Cyber Attacks depends on who is doing the attacking in order to deal with the threat. The russians the chinese love to do it through a proxy. Someone else. So theyve got nothing to do with it. 90 of the chinese hacks right now we can trace to two groups. Oned called the Elderwood Group in beijing, and the other one is called comic crew in shanghai. And let me tell you, strong strong ties to the chinese military. But the Chinese Government says they have no connection, no connection with these two great organizations. I say great, you have no connection with them. Well take your at your word ask declare these organizations as cyber terroris and well go after them since you have nothing do with them. Let me tell you that will get their attention, and we have to fight what i call a preventive war inextend of preemptive war. The old rules say that you could preempt an attack only when you had reached the point of deliberation where there was nothing else you could do, and if we followed those rules its over with. Theyve already attacked you. Theyve already gone and wiped out your ip shut down banks, and my concern is if we think the 2008 almost financial collapse of the Financial System in this country was bad in 2008 i believe a cyber attack on the Financial Institution is one of our most vulnerable threats we have to deal with. The iranians, we either have to be strong and say if you do this we are going to cut your optical cables. Were going to mess with the strand responders transponders on the satellites and youll no longer have the internet. These are the kinds of things we have to do. James gossler is one of the top Cyber Security experted in the cia and the nsa. He says America Needs between 20,000 and 30,000 Cyber Security experts to deal with the most dangerous Cyber Attacks to this country. We only have a thousand. We have to have a Recruitment Campaign in this country. One thing i call for are National Security scholarships for young people who are excelling in Cyber Security and Computer Science in college. I was on neil cavuto today, and he asked about the electromagnetic pulse, the threat to this country. It is a very real threat and pretty strong indications and evidence that the North Koreans may actually have electromagnetic pulse warhead, pointed out by the u. S. Nuclear Strategy Forum you. You say youre just trying to scare people. The electromagnetic pulse, countries like north korea know they cant defeat the United States in a conventional military campaign. The thing about electromagnetic pulse that would detonate at High Altitude a Nuclear Device and basically take out our grid. The reports, the electromagnetic they had electromagnet tick pulse commission established by congress. They said after one year of no grid, we would lose a substantial amount of the population of the United States farmers cant grow enough food today without electricity for the american population. How do you do your financial transsections in refrigerate food . And for people who dont think that an electromagnetic pulse attack is much of a possibility, look what nasa says . The Nasa Propulsion Laboratory in pasadena, california, says that it is inevitable in the next ten to 100 year well have a geo mat neglect tick storm on the sun, which would take down the grid. The ways to deal with this something called the shield act that would make sure we have the right enough transformers and so forth in storage, dampers to act as lightning rods and even something called a recovery transformer now, portable, we can transport them. Bottom line theres a way to be prepared so that we can get the grid back up in the event of a emergency. One thing i talk about in the book aviation security. Like i said were always fighting the last war always responding to the last threat. One of the biggest concerns i have today as far as securing our skies or with these manned portable air Defense Systems. The stingers we had in afghanistan years ago . We have 300 to 600 stinger missile wes cant account for today and he state Department Says between 1966 and today there were one million man pads, man portable air Defense Systems made. Most of them they can account with governments. There are several thousand today they cannot account for that they believe are in terrorist hands. We need to have these jamming mechanisms on our civilian aircraft. One aircraft goes down the direct cost to the economy one billion dollars, indirect cost estimated at 15 billion. We have to have this technology on our planes. One of the great tools we need to use, i firmly believe, in hope we do intelligence is open source intelligence. What is that . Open source means just that. What you get on the internet read the paper, tv. There are ten thousand 600 tv stations in the world. 10,600 tv stations. So much open source stuff out there that were not taking full advantage of it. Before 9 11 there was something called the Brown Commission to look at National Security issues and they said 90 of the good intelligence that we need comes from open source but the Intelligence Community pays the least amount of attention to it. The former director of Intelligence Agency of this country said that the same thing. Said we need a situation in our intelligence communitiy we have more Sherlock Holmes and less james bonds. The 90 of the stuff we need were not going out there to get it and its the 10 the more clandestine stuff that is he james bond stuff. Well, i tested this. I talk about it in the book. I went to a university when you go to Google Google gives you the most popular search. Its not a deep dive. The most popular search. I went and got a university that had Search Engines in other languages, and guess what we found in farsi in 2012 . Found that iranians were in on the ground in north korea and helping them with their missile tests, and we found a news agency a story verifying, and validating that. I can go on and on. Went on fox news with bill hemmer, bottom line, bill hemmer says this is the first time we have heard this in the United States way. Open source. Im a public citizen. We need to take advantage more of open source. Missile defense. Missile defense ties into so much of this. Ronald reagan knew what he was doing, or better yet, dr. Edward teller who sold Ronald Reagan on the idea of Missile Defense, knew what he was doing. So many of these threats today, so many of these threats today we can deal with with a good Missile Defense system for this country. We do not have on the west coast here you have a good fairly good Missile Defense capability. There is no landbased Missile Defense system on the east coast. So in the book i talk about things we can do in the near term to make up for that so that we at least have a radar capability that can talk to interceptors and that we can deal with. When i was doing research i went to see the late dr. Jim edwards, Ronald Reagans first secretary of energy. He was a dear friend of mine. I went to see him to talk about Energy Security and how it tied in. I went to see dr. Edwards and i noticed in his den hanging up was a picture of dr. Edward teller who had been the director of the Lawrence Livermore national lab and the guy who sold reagan on the idea of Missile Defense when he was the governor of california. I said dr. Edwards, is that Edward Teller . The nobel physics physicist . He said oh, yes he told me a story that has never been in print before until tonight. Its in the book. It seemed that Ronald Reagan ran on the campaign of Missile Defense for america Strategic Defense Initiative, as they called it then. Reagan became president dr. Teller couldnt get in to see him. David stockman was keeping him away from president reagan because it would cost too much money. Dr. Teller knew dr. Edwards and began to complain to jim edwards. So over a series of various meetings edwards came up with a plan. He said, at the department of energy we keep the original letter that Albert Einstein wrote to president roosevelt proposing a manhattan project. Dr. Teller, i want you to write a let to president reagan proposing the Strategic Defense Initiative for america. Im going to get that letter that Albert Einstein wrote to Franklin Roosevelt. Well go around David Stockman and good to president reagan and the rest is history. I call him the unsung hero of Missile Defense. One other key thing i want to talk about, too, is energy. This country has got to be 100 Energy Independent and be able to sustain it. The u. S. Energy Information Agency tells us that between now and 2014 well 2040 globally a 56 increase of energy consumption. 85 will come from the developing countries. We give a lot of details in the book. Every time we buy oil in the mideast, even from a country we think is a prou. S. Country, you can rest assured that a portion i call it excess petro dollars goes somehow to finance terrorism. We have to dry that up. We have to be 100 , make our own energy. Dry it so they have to focus on their own people, and energy is so important. [applause] i also talk about how we as far as energy is concerned, the nuclear issue. Were at a point here in about if were going to be 100 energy dependent today we still have to have 20 of our energy coming from nuclear. The problem is, one percent of our nuclear raeactors today have been built in the last 20 years. I if we built 100 new nuclear racketers between now and 2030 that would be just enough to replace what we got. If we dont build more reactors what well see coming with the Worldwide Energy demand thats coming and the pressure on Energy Prices we have to be 100 Energy Independent and deprive the terrorists the excess petro dollars how much do we pay for this . I call it victory without bankruptcy. Great story. Franklin roost was president , his first term he cut the army budget by 51 . Guess who the chief of staff of the United States army was . None other than douglas macarthur. Macarthur got into a discussion with the president and said, basically to the effect that i just hope that when america loses the next war, and a bayonet is in a Young American troop and the enemy has his foot on his neck and is cursing one man, i want it to be roosevelt and not macarthur. He said that and then realize it what he had done and offered his resignation to the president. Franklin roosevelt said development be foolish. You and this budget have to get together. We have 585 bill 585 billion budget there are things to do to be more efficient official so we can pay for things we really need in the war on terror and to win. My feeling and my concern is we have cut in all the wrong places. When we have taken our army down to preworld war ii levels that sends the wrong message to bad people. Some of the things we can do i talk about how we can change contracting in the military. The government a lot of reports have shown between 2001 and 2008 major acquisition programs, 300 billion. Because of the way contracting is, they keep adding with the costplus contracts theres encentavossed to just keep adding stuff. Prospective type system where you know, ive got to do it for this amount and the contractors are incentivized to get it done on time and make a profit, we can save a lot of money. We need to cult the number of admirals and generals we have. Since the end of the cold war our military has decreased 30 , the number of three and fourstar admirals and generals has gone up 19 with all the bury, acracy we have more admirals in the navy than we have ships. I cant wait until the admiral buddies read that and want to talk to me. The National Guard. Im glad that chris is here tos what we are doing with the National Guard education. The Founding Fathers got it right with the citizen soldier concept and we can train roughly three or four guardsmen or reserve soldiers for every one active duty troop, and we have to properly equip them, and if we dont properly equip them, and that winds up back in the active force structure itself will cost the taxpayers billions or dollars. In the book we talk about how to avoid a coming but potential arms race with china and the ways we can do that. We talk about that in the book. Another thing i talk about is how do we theres Great Program called the rapid fueling director and the entire Unmanned Aerial Vehicle concept came out of this program. Rather than doing a bunch of research and development and inventing thursday i they get the buyin from Major Commands so they know theyre going to field them, and they save a ton of money in research and development costs, and they get things fielded. The things like that, that we can do to save a lot of money. And you know what we got to do . We got to engage Small Business. Thats where the ingenuity and innovativeness is. Theres an Organization Called jiado, they spend billions of dollars hugh to deal with ieds and to defeat these improvised explosive devices. I cant tell you how many times id get an invitation urging Small Business and people to come to an industry day, and guess what . You must have a secret clearance to get in there Small Businesses mostly dont have secret clearances but have the innovation and energy you need to thwart the next terrorist attack. I could go on and on. But we can have victory without bankruptcy. Edward gibbons wrote in this entap on saint athens in the end, they wanted more than freedom. They wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life and they lost it all. Security, comfort, and freedom. When the affinnans determined not to give the to site but for society to give to them. And the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility. Then athens ceased to be free. Will history one day say the same for us . America is the last best hope of freedom for man kind, and today we are dealing with a challenge i believe of the 21st century, and my hope is that america will once again have the same kind of resolve we had following 9 11 to do whatever it takes to keep america safe. And i want to thank you very much for being here. [applause] thank you, mr. Hipp. Ben has agreed take some questions. Well do a couple. I want to let everyone know we have the new terrorism for sale in the museum store. He has agreed stick around and autograph copies at the conclusion. So please pick one up. Our first question is from this gentleman right here. Mr. Hipp, im curious, seems to me everybody in the room here has a gas card and every time somebody puts gas in their car were funding terrorism against our owe own country. Why dont we quit buying oil from opec. I dont understand what the u. S. Doesnt do it. We have enough reserves for the information 40 our 50 years to sustain ourselves. I agree and we have enough shell as well. I agree 100 with you. Im for any form of energy that is made in america. Let me get over to the next one here. I just have a quick question. Have you sent a copy of this to the occupier in the white house . I got say this. To not call what were dealing with radical islam is the equivalent of would be akin to Franklin Roosevelt in world war ii calling nazi fascism german aggression. Our next question is from william, 20 years old. Thank you for speaking this evening. My question for you is, beyond the scholarship to increase Cyber Security for young people when i look at my culture, my friends, people my age, they have a very negative view of the military and especially of the armed forces. And im wondering what are some ways you would think of increasing the public image of the military and attracting more advanced minds . I went to a comedy show and he made a joke that the military recruits from the same pool that mcdonalds does, and i dont think we can a allege accurately represent a Defense Force for this country if we dont have the greatest minds and defending us. Two points. Number one in the book i do say that education is a National Security issue. And its important, i think, in our high schools i think i dont think we teach American History like we used to in our high schools. Young people need to understand what their forefathers went through to build this country and give us the freedoms we have today. One thing young people understand is technology. Technology is good. I got my little iphone here and apps coming in all the time. But guess what . As technology changes, and increases, thats good. But bad people have access to the new technologies, too, and the problem is our government is so stovepiped and we have seen it we cant respond quick enough to the threats. So its as if the threat as technology increases, the threats are increasing exponentially, but this is a chance for young people to get involved and help this country but again, i think we have to do more in our schools and in high schools, getting back to what this country is about, and instilling in young people a better sense of history of what america is about. Our next question from this gentleman in the front row. I appreciate everything you said. Ive really enjoyed it. Theres just one area i would like to take issue with and thats Nuclear Energy. The reason i would is that any Nuclear Accident the radiation lasts at least 40,000 years. Theres the element of human error, of natural disaster, and terrorism. I dont think we can afford to go into Nuclear Energy. Nuclear is also a lot of people dont recognize, also a Renewable Energy as well as you know. One of the great things too that has come out of the military in recent years is the development of the prophylactic radiation capability for the United States, and i called for that to be stockpiled as well. But as far as the United States is concerned, ive dealt a lot with people at Savannah Laboratory and places like that. The United States we have come a long ways in the Nuclear Industry and if we dont deal with this issue, if we dont deal with this issue right now and as you know the Nuclear Regulatory commission you get a 40year license. If we dont have a commitment to Nuclear Energy and we think we have problems now having to buy oil and stuff overseas come 2030, were going to have real problems and the terrorist are going to get more american money. Thats my concern. I appreciate it. Well take one more question and then well move into the front lobby for the book signing. At the very beginning you talked about Border Security and my question is, theres so much conversation where everyone is talking over one another with regard to immigration. My question is if we simply took the existing laws and adhere to them how bad would the problem be . Well, yes. If we could we would be a lot better shape, i agree with you. One more. This one is a van, we have had a lot of discussion about prospects for developments
