Here at the National Constitution center, which is where we are based this week, they have an area called, signers hall. Cspans john mcardle took a tour. Welcome to the constitution center. Were the first and only museum in the country dedicated to the u. S. Constitution. Were on Independence Mall in heart of historic philadelphia. We have three Main Missions at the center. Of course were a museum where you can come to see our amazing interactive exhibitions. Were also americas town hall. You can find great programing on site, online, about current constitutional debates and discussion. Were a specific education center. Nds. Were trying to get a lot of our civic and constitutional content out to students across the country. Well talk a lot more about our museum. Were in one of the signature exhibition spaces called signsers hall. This is depicting the moment of the constitution was signed back on sent 17th, 1787. There are 42 statues represents those still present and participating in the Constitutional Convention after a long summer working in philadelphia to create this document. You wan walk amongst the signers. You can touch them. We invite you to touch them. Theyre lifesize bronze statues. They are made to be interactive. This is ben franklin. He is one of the most loved. You can also find out that not everybody at the Constitutional Convention was happy with how things ended up. There were actually 55 men who attended at different points. Some of them left because they had other business that theyey needed to attend to. Some left out of protest. They werent really happy how things were going. These three are our descenters. George mason, randolph and gerry. They were still here beyond september 17th about, but they refused to sign the document because they felt it didnt do enough to protect the interests that they had for the countrys future and for their personal states. We have we have other famous people in this room you might recognize. We Alexander Hamilton who was left as only delegate from new york after his two delegates who were with him left in protest earlier in the convention. He was still here at the end and helped with the final crafting and signing of the document. We also have James Madison right here. He is the shortest delegate in the room. He is only five four. These are lifesize, very accurate depictions. He is considered the father of the constitution. He came in with a plan that set the agenda for the rest of the summer. He was really super influential kind of chasing what the final product was. He also took all the notes of the convention. He is person who let us know what happened during the convention. Finally we have george washington. He is of course the father of our country but he was also elected president of the convention and he really was that steady hand who was here all summer long overseeing these proceedings and kind of lending his gravitas and how much respect he had from the fellowfe country men to the whole proceeding. They would have to go out to the people to make the case to get them to support this new form of government. At the end of this exhibit you can be a part of the story and add your name to the constitution. This is about bringing the past to life and getting you to interact with the past and understand these events and period of history better thanio you might otherwise just reading something out of a textbook. Read more about that at the hill. Com. Supporters of Bernie Sanders held a News Conference to voice the disappointment of selection of virginia senator tim kaine as her vicepresident ial running mate as well as other issues. Norman solomon who heads sanders delegate network said floor fights are possible. He was joined at the News Conference by donna smith, progressive democrats of america good morning. Id like to welcome, everyone to this first News Conference of the Bernie Delegates Network. By way of a little bit of background the Bernie Delegates Network was launched by the online action group, roots action. Org which i cofounded and coordinate. And roots action has about 700,000 active members online and the Bernie Delegates Network is ongoing in very active partnership with progressive democrats of america and this morning were going to hear from the executive director of that inside of the Democratic Party major player, in terms of progressive activism, organizing and electoral work, progressive democrats of america, or pda, donna smith. Id like to open by just giving a bit of background how the Bernie Delegates Network got to where we are now and where we anticipate well be going in the next few days. One thing that i think needs to be very emphatically emphasized is that the Bernie Delegates Network is independent. Were entirely independent of the democratic has committee and the Democratic Party. Were entirely independent of the Bernie Sanders official campaign. We have no working, direct or indirect relationship or communications with ben bernanke or the Campaign Apparatus Bernie Sanders. From the outset weve been independent. That is where we are now. Thats where we continue to be. At this point as i speak, we have 1250 sanders delegates in the Bernie Delegates Network. In other words 2 3 of all the delegates are in our network. Something else i want to emphasize that the Bernie Delegates Network reflects, it does not direct. We do not tell anybody, we do not try to instruct any delegate what to do or what not to do, other than our commitment to nonviolence. What does the Bernie Delegates Network reflect today . I think it is a really good idea because this is the beginning of our convention. Now that youre all seated i will ask you all to rise for a pledge of allegiance. I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of america, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under god indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Thank you all, very much. I want to wish good morning to all of the delegates. To all of our, of all of the guests. To all of our speakers. Many of whom who are, coming up as we speak. I wanted to congratulate the delegates for being selected to represent the common wealth. And im proud to welcome everybody here to, to my adopted city and to many of you who are here, the city of philadelphia. The city of brotherly love and sisterly affection. This week were going to make history. And were going to make history through november. [applause] and ive got a lot to say but im not going to say it all right now. I want to start with one thing because i believe its really important. Im going to start with it. Im going to close with it and i need people to understand what im saying. This four days is not just about selecting a president ial candidate which we will do. These four days is to have unity within our party. [applause] and so heres what i want to ask. If youre a Bernie Sanders supporter or a Bernie Sanders delegate, would you please rise. [applause] i want to you can sit down. Its all right. I want to thank you all for being here. I know some of you have been in politics a long time. For many of you this is the beginning. I know i should address everybody but i want to specifically address you. We want you. We need you. We want you to be part of us. Ive been in this a long time and we have people who were for howard dean. We had people who were barack obama who thought they were outside. We grabbed them. Were going to hug you. We need your thoughts, we need your ideas, we need your passion and we need your ability to come together so we can speak with one voice. [applause] and im not good about baloney. We also need you to help us create compromises because in order to speak with one voice it cant just be your voice and it just cant be my voice. It has to be all of our voice. For those of you that are in politics, for the first time, that is the singlemost difficult and most important thing that we can accomplish. So i want to welcome you and well get on with the program and i want to thank you at the end of the program for being here as well. First i want to thank our sponsors. I think you should all thank our sponsors because you guys are all eating and im not. So i want to make sure somebody saves me some food. It is first of all our sponsors are shop rite and lorelai matice is here. Raise your hand. Thank you very much. [applause] and our sponsor is also pp l. Is Christine Mart pin here . Christine, thank you, thank you very. [applause] the breakfast looked so good im actually going to enjoy it when im all done. Well have a number of speakers and i im sorry. Were going, listen, i need your help with this too. It will be free flowing. I have no idea what im doing, okay . I will try to make it as smooth as possible. I will keep it rolling. Weve got people coming in. We have our governor and our senator sitting here. We have rich trumpka. All of them will speak and all have time commitments. I will try. Be patient with me. At the end of the meeting when im giving my remarks to the press, feel free to stick around and you can tell me what i did wrong, all right . I understand that our first speaker is our sponsor, Christine Martin. Just for a couple of words from pp l. Christine. Come on up. Thank you. [applause] well, thank you.
