hampshire, which is the next state to vote. instead, he saying he's gonna go to south carolina, sort of a way to challenge haley on her own turf. but it's also a pretty explicit underscoring of the fact that he doesn't have a campaign apparatus that's built out new hampshire. in fact, that's a state that looks primed for it to be the kind of race that haley has wanted it to be all along, which is trump versus haley. he's hoping that a second place finish in iowa can solidify that idea. she just wants to be able to run through lebron desantis first and then use a bounce to get to the granite state. >> all right. ali vitali coming to us from the warm confines of a restaurant in ames, iowa. thank you so much. the final des moines register poll ahead of tomorrow's caucuses, trump is way ahead of his rivals. but it's also revealing new information about the other remaining candidates. as you see there, join me live now from des moines, iowa, for a deeper dive, is nbc news senior political editor marc murray. mark, thank you very much for being here. put trump's nearly 30-point lead into perspective here. >> yeah, jonathan. it's a very big, and it's worth

weather event in terms of their organization on the ground? >> well, we're going to see on caucus night if the trump campaign apparatus that they put together here is able to turn out people. in 2016, it was sort of an organic organization. this is very much structured. in the same way that a traditional caucus campaign is. so, it will be fascinating to see if this enthusiasm that you see in the des moines register poll sort of among the trump adherence turns out that they are really you know, set on turning out on caucus night. desantis organization when you talk to people who are in it, not only have they been you know, gaming for what happens at a caucus event tomorrow night, they are gaming for how to get people there. they're organizing you know, four wheel drive vehicles.

him an advantage and he's hoping his organization with never back down will also give him a turnout advantage. actually, what we found in the des moines register poll is that desantis' supporters are more likely to say they will definitely show up to caucus than donald trump's or nikki haley supporters. so he's hoping that ground game, that organization, gives him the ability to at least pull off a second place finish here. >> and nikki haley has spent a lot on her campaign apparatus as well as outside groups supporting her, spent a ton on tv. really has not done as much the retail politics as desantis has as you mentioned, going to all 99 counties. haley has not done that. so a lot of it is going to be about enthusiasm. it is expected to be the coldest ever caucus night. kay, from what you've seen, which candidate, which campaigns are best suited for this extreme

science. but it is supposed to be nikki haley and i have been part of a conversation where she tells me that the santas, here in iowa, it's clearly on a downward trajectory, and i'm told -- >> we do have. it >> good suspense building. watch. >> i mean, he's only played in iowa. he's invisible in new hampshire, he's invisible in south carolina, he's fourth and fifth place in both of those. i mean, i welcome him to south carolina, but we're headed to new hampshire. that's the next state to vote. someone might want to tell him that. >> now, when haley says, someone might want to tell him that, it's because desantis, even as he saying, don't worry about the polls here in iowa, is already saying that he's not going to go directly to new hampshire, which is the next state to vote. instead, he saying he's gonna go to south carolina, sort of a way to challenge haley on her own turf. but it's also a pretty explicit underscoring of the fact that he doesn't have a campaign apparatus that's built out new hampshire. in fact, that's a state that looks primed for it to be the kind of race that haley has wanted it to be all along,

breaking things. he just wasn't good at fixing them. and now we look at the fact, rightly or wrongly, chaos follows him. >> reporter: haley there stating that chaos follows trump, but she has always had to play this delicate dance in terms of the way that she takes on the former president who of course has her very much in his sights in attack ads, especially in new hampshire, but also, she served in his administration. so she really has had to walk that fine line with her criticism and the tone and tenor with which she lobs them at the front runner. for haley, the best case scenario here is a second place finish that allows her to spring board into new hampshire with more momentum. my understanding is maybe they're not there yet but they're hoping for some kind of surge in the last stretch before night. she has a campaign apparatus, not just in iowa and new

the party, the uk is ses sor to donald trump, and it just has not worked out that way for him. so going forward, if you do lose, yes, we have seen people run for president again later, but it is just, really, he has put so much on this, and particularly in iowa, he has spent so much time, and so much money, and presented this monstrosity of the campaign apparatus going in that it is somewhere that he absolutely has to come in second, like sara said, just to keep going forward. and frankly to keep his reputation intact within the republican party. >> sara, you said that you have been doing focus groups, and this is going to be the town halls will have questions from the iowa voter, and what are some of the questions that actually matter to the republican voter right now? >> well, on ron desantis, when i was listening to the iowa voters, one thing that seemed like ron desantis had given up

testify if we ever get to trial -- >> i'm looking again, your book is called disproven, coming up in just a few months, i can't help but wonder how much the prosecutor, any member of the legal teams are trying to pour over and calm over what you have in that book. but also, who knew what. mark meadows for example, 70, paul others, did you ever convey this information and what you are telling us today was in your book to these key players? >> yes. i reported to a trump campaign lawyer who accepted everything i had told him as the truth. other members above him within the campaign apparatus accepted what i told him as the truth. that truth was communicated to mark meadows. in fact the lawyer i reported to that was shown on one of the january six committee broadcasts, it would --

talk about the seriousness of this case, laying out to the public. he's shied away from it. the white house has shied away from it, and i know you'll say that's the way it should happen, but at some point he'll have to talk about this more, isn't he? >> one thing i can tell you for having worked for president biden for a long time is he takes the separation of the justice department and the courts from the white house and the executive branch incredibly seriously. it's something that he believes is foundational and critical to our government to be able to function and so there are sort of two questions here. there's the question of the actual criminal proceedings which the president will not touch and has not touched, and then there's the political strategy, and i think what you saw from president biden during the campaign in 2020 and as you see now is the campaign apparatus is going to continue to draw a really clear contrast. they are going to make clear these are the stakes, there's nothing less than our democracy at stake here and he's calling

hurry this audit up if the campaign can throw some money you're way, right? that doesn't sound like a federal official to me or someone acting as a chief of staff. he also is going to have some of the trump lawyers, the trump campaign lawyers, the d.a. is, come in and testify. and i think what that signals to me is, look, if meadows was not acting as part of the campaign apparatus, then the attorney-client privilege doesn't attach and those gentlemen will need to testify. >> it gets to a lot of what the crucial issues will be in this entire case. actually this case and also frankly the federal case as well. we could see a lot of very interesting things here. senator, thank you. judge, thank you. jennifer rogers, thank you as well. next the former president's friechl mind with four arrests behind homie and four trials ahead. and what vladimir putin is saying about his late ally turned rival, yevgeny prigozhin. that and what becomes of the wagner group mercenary army now. . between the high i interest, the fees...
