They have lost confidence in the constitution, lost confidence in the fact that a strong nation has to be strong, has to show its strength, and let the enemies know what theyre going to do. The question in my mind is how can you prevent war with policies that are making communist countries content with communism, or foreign aid policies that are making them even more content . And at the same time, Nuclear Policies which alienate our nato allies . Man who hastop a vowed to bury you by sending them shovels, by feeding and clothing his friends, or denying your friends the means to help protect you. You cannot stop them by letting him edge of poser and closer to you, as he is doing right now. I firmly believe that the only way to secure the peace without war is to pile all the economic pressures that will disrupt the enemy, lose his friends, and confront him with a united and determine nato, and a very firm and understandable Foreign Policy. This leads me up to the subject of peace. Since president eisenhower left office, our Foreign Policy position has deteriorated and deteriorated. Until today, we watch almost daily the slippage of the u. S. Around the world. As more and more countries begin to disbelieve us, begin to distrust us, and begin to look elsewhere for the leadership that must be portrayed, if peace is to be obtained and maintained in this world. Here again on the same subject, Foreign Policy. Barry goldwater Foreign Policy is, far and away, the greatest interest. I would say that it ranks 10 above the next issue that seems to be on the minds of New Hampshire. Now, you would normally expect more interest on the eastern seaboard in the subject. But i finally, and in the rocky mountains, and in the middle west, the same concerns about what is happening to america around the world. And i find a great and growing desire to see a change that will result in a Foreign Policy that can guarantee peace in this world for our lifetimes, and a lifetimes of our children and grandchildren. Children i have four and grandchildren. And i dont want to see the children reached the point that the only escape, other than surrender to slavery, is a war. I think with proper guidance, i think with sensible guidance, with current not cowardice, with firmness not weakness, we can contribute to the piece that will keep these children and grandchildren at peace and comfort during their lives. Byis just a short hop plane from washington to New Hampshire. Barry goldwater has made the trip. He puts the flying time to good use, keeping up with National Affairs and as many possibilities and the senate. Sight for familiar the veteran campaigner. Inther, was it cold february. But a touch of cold cannot stop a campaign, or a New Hampshire campaign, who came out in droves. On Foreign Policy, Social Security, communism, foreign aid, the United Nations, cuba. Wherever he went, he faced the same issues, and he hazard in the same way. He told the people he supported Social Security. But he was concerned that inflation would devalue their Social Security dollar. He told people only a Strong America can assure peace. He called for personal responsibility in government, at the local level, because Barry Goldwater was to give the Government Back to the people. He called for a reexamination of the u. N. Charter. Listen now, as he speaks out on the u. N. Goldwater you have a charter by which you are going to live in an organization, particularly an organization like the United Nations, devoted to peace. And you violate, what i believe two of the important covenants, you will not engage in aggression nor interfere in the internal workings of a country. Then, you have become a dishonest and we would not have been doing this have we not been imposed by the other nations who see no wrong in violating the charter. This is the same position when we argue about red china coming into the United States. The charter very clearly says no. We are ready have russia. And to me, it is an academic argument. We say they cannot come in, so if we say that, red china cannot be admitted. But you know that there are chances where they are admitted. I have repeatedly suggested that the United Nations meet for a charter revision. And now, the people of New Hampshire speak out for Barry Goldwater. Well, i just have to shake your hand. I like his plan. And i like his way of speaking, i think he will keep his campaign promises. And i know one thing. He will not be a yes man for any party. Him as ai dont see politician so much, just as a man. I am very impressed with him. I am extremely proud we have an american who was gutsy enough to put the money back where it belongs. I am opposed to foreign aid, economic aid. I have never voted for it since ive have been in the senate. And i would not, even if they divided into the three components that it is made up of, as we mention it. We have military assistance, which i think is necessary for some years to come. I could vote for this. And we have technical assistance, which i think is the best program we have. This is teaching other people how to do things with their hands that we can do. An economic aid, since the marshall plan, has not, in my opinion, garnered us any friends. I dont think you can purchase friendship. I cannot buy yours, and you cannot buy mine. If you show me something that lets me live better than i do, i will be your friend. That is how i think we should proceed. If we have to have foreign aid, if we cannot live without it, and i think we can, then why not try a multilateral approach. Where some other countries get in the act. We may be the richest country in the world but we cannot support the rest of the world much longer. In the course of his campaign, he is traveling the length and breadth of the country literally thousands of miles. Whenever they can, his family and his wife and their four children are joining in this campaign. He is leading the people, meeting them facetoface. Theyre getting to know him and his family. Here is his younger daughter, peggy. They call her little peggy. And his youngest son, mike. It is because he is a devoted family man that Barry Goldwater entered the family race. Because he believed so strongly in a free america, because he is dedicated to preserving the peace for all american families. Outever he goes, he speaks that clearly and forcefully on the issues. He explains exactly where he stands on domestic and Foreign Policy. Everywhere he goes, the people are responding with enthusiasm for this new and different kind of basement. Barry goldwater has been constantly on the go. It is a grueling schedule. And whenever he can, he catches a quick nap, here with his daughter peggy. And his wife peggy. Then, back to the campaign, where he is calling for courage and integrity. He is calling for an end to do nothing policies, for a congress faced on the dynamic principles of the republic, a rebar during of individual freedom. We reject, therefore, the idea that the economic planners in washington, that a group of people sitting in washington can plan what the country is going to make, where it is to be made, the quality of the product, the price of the product, the wage to be paid, etc. Etc. Whichw that this system, in simpler terms is called socialism, has never worked in history of the earth. And it is not working today. It is worse than trying. Thank you, very much. I hope you make it. Thank you. Hi, how are you . Well, i think mr. Goldwater is the man we need. I think this country has gone away from the principles on which it was founded. And i think he is the man that will bring us back to the days of Free Enterprise and the vigor and use this country had. As far as im concerned, he is the only man that should be president because he is the only man that stands for something. I think he is the first man to run for president that i have seen in the past 30 years that will stand on the principles of the Founding Fathers, who wrote the federal constitution. Social security is a contract between the federal government and you. And i tell you, all of us who notSocial Security, i do believe in breaking contracts. And neither does the government. And i have never, at anytime, advocated doing away with Social Security. What i am concerned about, though, and i wish there were more of us in the senate like myself who worry about this, is the fact that you, all of us, paying our dollars into Social Security, when we get to the age to get him back, we are not going to get our dollar back. The dollar today has reduced in value over 50 from what it was a mere 20 years ago. We are going to see a greater decrease with more and more inflation. I dont believe in inflation. And i dont think we need unusual inflation in this country. By theinvite inflation constant deficit spending, this is what im trying to talk about in Social Security. Try to get the older and younger isple to realize that it this kind of waste with miniature, that when it comes time to get Social Security, they will not do that well. I dont think you have to do further than to ask the recipients today if they are living very high off the hog. They are not. I removed her when i first went to work, i read an advertisement in a magazine that as long gone out of business. Retired on 125 a month. They had a picture of a man and a wife sitting under an orange tree in florida. I bought one. It is all paid up. When i get to be 65, i can retire on 125 a month. The trouble is, that will not even by an orange tree. [laughter] here and at the dirt, and the town halls all over the state, goldwater has found a wonderful reception. Warm. Andund peaceful, his wife has been wellreceived. Support forg personal freedom, and goldwater, the man. Sometimes, the man. Take a deep breath. s but after a quick nap, great strength and vitality are refreshed and renewed. He is ready to meet the people once again. Everywhere, he is urging the voters to get out and vote for individual freedom on march 10. Withy i urge you, along the others, to get out on march 10, make your vote count. Next weekend on American History tvs railamerica, the vietnam hearings 50 years later. From february 1956, chaired by senator albright, gives equal time to critics and the johnson administration. In hearings that were televised live to the nation. Here is a preview. The vietnam hearings are probably some of the most extraordinary hearings ever held by congress. They were investigating a war that was still being fought. Congress, in particular the senate, want to know why we were in vietnam. What the ministrations policies were. They wanted to hear from opponents. They gave equal status to critics of the war, as they did to supporters of the war. It is a real debate. George tenet was one of s distinguished diplomats. He wrote an article for a magazine, because he was a not takewho could sides in this issue. Really suggesting that the policy of the u. S. Needed to follow containment. It was the containment theory, the rationale for the u. S. To send troops to the imam. And here was the author of the containment theory saying no, it does not apply here. This is a mistake. Clear that however justified our action may be in our own eyes, it has failed to win either enthusiasm or confidence, even among people who are normally friendly to us. Our motives are widely misinterpreted. Spectacleectacle, the emphasized and reproduced in thousands of press photographs and stories that appear in presses of the world. The spectacle of americans inflicting reavis injuries on poor people, and particularly, a people of a different race and color. No matter how warranted by military necessity or by the excesses of the adversary our operations may seem to us to be, or may genuinely be, the spectacle produces reactions among the millions of people throughout the world, profoundly detrimental to the image we would like them to hold of this country. I am not saying that this is just or right. I am saying that this is so. And that it is bound in the circumstances to be so. And the victory purchased at the price of such further damage would be a hollow one in terms of our interest.
