Technology itself. This is what is the exciting tool for me, taking on that. To share that with visitors. You can watch this or any other programming, you can go to cspan. Org histo cspan. Org history. We are back live outside this stadium on the National Mall, president gerald ford did kated his museum. A america by hair of our earlierest day with air transportation and mail carers through the 1950s. It is all here. I want to sherianne argument that was nor Washington Post this week on the spear of lewis, one of the iconic same that karls lindbergh have. It was refurbished back in 1995. He saw you a moment ago. Talk about some interesting things you found over the last year or so. It is a true milestone. Charles lindbergh, hes epic. And so this stunt to redo the scatter and the flight gallery, look at this airport and seeing the elements and left by the poem who made the airline. They actual, the tour and from juunit as well as his unit. You showed us some of the art tracts on display here. Why are you so interested in this area. I have always been interested in aviation history. Growing up, it was about old level airplanes. I went years studying his industry and i was able to open and ground and i ended up here. Was there a turning point or a toemt point in americas his skr sister history. Test a person that shows people that aif gas station is possible. After that, you s in whic which you can increase the populari popularity. Some you are getting new displays and artifacts and art feedbacks and cripple creek. Where does it all go . How do you find all the space for it. So we have our national Andrea Mcfall it is always a challenge but hear the industry of flight in and out the atmosphere is always developing and always involving. We have to think about whats the next big project. 787 f7488841. We are coming to you as part of c span 3 of American History tv because of the importance of today of 40 years ago. This is a first time a Major National museum had been dedicated. It is been menacely. Do you have a safrt ex pibt. For me, a the most perfect is the one that i am working on. The pie leer is a plot. But, i am also working in the new speed gallery. It is part of our transportation tchlt we cannot see it right now but behind me were some early computer technology. Theyre trying to intercepts some of the technology from states and russias. It is a big and bulky computer. We have grown and change, thats part of the story as well, right . Dlekting the dallas. The cold air, that very period history of our history of our re recently past, you have technology of whos fighting and whos going to get to the moon, first. Thats a by product of this need to push the technology to reach these new challenges and Commuter Technology is a reflection of that. Caller 4th of july 4th of july, well, it is as louder film based on lindberghs august p autobiography. It is a story that follows the book very well. But tals change for dramatic hollywood e gekt. The tlie that you s but, it is also the story of how we go to the stage going back and forth between the flight as well as creating the airplane, pee peek back torrey. It is a jimmy stuart was a big fan of miss wall mecklenb. G tlir others that we do not know. So looking at, we had these big names, and Charles Lindbergh and buy, sigh resz was an unknown personal in the 1930s. He died young two years later in a crash. He dised in history just two years before flay fourth of julying out here. I wonder if you can take the step back and explain the significant commercial air transportation to the u. S. And the world and the economy well, we have this great connection of stories between the United States and the aviotion is there. Theyre trying to connect the comment and a lot of secondnology and in term of the longest and the liability and the speed. It shapes that and becomes a major and the people that makes airplanes. It drives technology so it puts United States of the round floor of where the United States is pr prim inconsistent. Where id you go to college, where did you get from all this. I went to agony, university. So for me, or that facilit e facilitated by designer. History is the story o f theitthe United States and this is the story of aviation. The story is to share with visitors from the gase as well as the rest of the world of this epic story how men went into the third dimension and the idea of creating ecknology and having a vision to create flying machines that could carry people and we poens and trigger the imagination and stimulate passion for technology. This is a history of science and technology museum. Directly keconnected and how those levels are all interconnected. The story how men over come the challenge of getting him in the air is the primary story is the museum is prepared to open it. I really like the to see the connections between visitors and art jackets where you have a parent or brand parents, look at that technology. And, look at castle or airplane, i read about it in school and i saw that. I know who this person is. These connections that those of us dont have, the right brothers, the idea of two brothers aviation world warld 2, so this people had a connection too. These connections that people have is exciting to see how people connect and to see the people that are so important in those stories being represented of this museum. How often do you see a mill industry pilot. You see that a lot. This personal connection is always astounding for me, which i came up with interest in aviation, i didnt have a personal connection. Wow, these people flew these objects. They have a connection to operating it echlt. Do you fly showeyourself in go to the mike, we are live here on c span 3 at the space museum 40 how does new artifacts get in the museum knowing that you knows there, look for things or do people want to align want to dona donate that kind of thing. Whats mike, thanks for the call, first, new artifact. Grey question, the call is really a story of how people connecting in the museum with their own personal way. This artifact is from transfers from the National Governments and individual content so it could be a cold call on the phone or contacting our website. It could be through another curator or a staff member. People contact us in a variety of way to offer their stories to the museum. Once a curator identifies an object, we are interested in that and we really want that object. We argued for the artifact and once it passes mustard, it can come in the yellow election. And so we always discuss and really argue of these artifacts. An example thats coming up on the high zone for us is, i want the flex of testimony air erasing collection. It is a small eraser and well have it come in the fall. It is the World Fastest airplanes thats built for a kid. Theyre weighing it. These are the kind of stories we want to share with American Public and the rest of the world, it is a way that we have to justify that technology of artifacts coming into the museum. Are there any museums like this elsewhere in the world . There are National Museums of the u. S. And the roast of the world. But, you also have National Museum, outside of paris and you have the science museum, the rf and england. You have these [ music playing ] s museums are looking at aviation. Thats impressive artifacts as well in their connection. We are talking about hen novations will be over the next several years. When we come back in 2022 02 an 2003, meet and shrimps. And so looking at military aviation a different way and looking development of the ideas of where the plant and whats the idea of earth in our store roif hum of human kind. The idea is to present a new take on space history. This is our generation of curators and designers. We are excited about telling this new story lets hear from kevin, whos joining us from south carolina. Go thaed wiahead with your ques. Maybe a static display about the boy seven because they are so large and do you have any plans of being a small display of the history of things. The kevin was asking about the consolidated 3 h36 and the newest one. Two important cold war bombers. We dont have examples of those in the collection. The National Museum of the air force because as well as other air forces do. We cover National Museums where it is an important air sfo force story. We may offer one that we cannot pass up. This time, we have collected one for our collection. Mike, go ahead please. Mike, go ahead in michigan. Well try one more time, mike, in michigan, are you there . How many people work with you as a curator. Well t, it is a team. Both of those are areo dynamics. We have a registrar and educator. We have been stemming our 30 programs and a lot of guys are reaching out. Lets hear from dan whos joining us from kentucky. Go ahead with your question. I am an ordinary guy. It is two parts dquestion. What was the fastest that the airplane ever flown and who flew it . The fastest it was flown, do you know . I heard the sr 71 was it the fastest . It is the fastest, practicely, engines that are installed and making it the fastest man carrying objects besides the Space Shuttle is the north american a15 which we saw in the cools. The sr 71, for example, is the one we have this our collection. It is a 2000 and it goes up to 3,000. It is deliver flight. It is really nice. This is the fast airplane. N now, the one interesting thing of aviation, we dont really connect people specifically with that airplane. We have some pilots, sr 71. Well have these are the air force professional pilots that flew fr 22. Logan in florida, you are next, go ahead, please. Hi, i want to know the relationship between scott a and logan, how old are you, by the way . Caller huh . How old are you . Caller i am nine. You are interested in aviation . Thank you for the call. Maybe a future curator. Yeah, always welcome. Thanks for your question, logan. You can see it here. Scott press field is the Research Policy fleeing for north americans. We know him best looking at the f15. In the early 50s. It is chuckuater and fodoolingi these. Their competitors. Thats one of the interesting dynamic things about pilots is they are all kessel activity. They want to see whos the best and really out do each other. They are a great example of that. People are interested in studying aviation history. Where are some of the leading institutions in the country . A lot of ways, you can go to a focus program like auburn had. You can put aviation through your story. We had students from yale, princeton and other schools and major grant universities. You can can tailor your History Program at the graduate level to fit and in terms of how you want to stay. It falls down to the fish activity and studying about what you are writing about and how lucky you are of getting that original idea. You can send us a tweet, this is from our viewer. The question is before this building opens, where was it stored . We came to mithsonian in 1928. It was displayed where it was hanging over the glass cases and so more or less over the years on display and the arts and industry, you still see it today. A lot of ways, this building was intended to put the spirit of st. Louis in that very important spot in the milestone. You think about this for a moment as we listen to dave in new york echlt. What question and what things are unanswered in term of aviation history lets go to david. Hi, i have two questions. I visited in 1976 and i remember it very well when it opened. Had the artifacts, have any of them degraded over the 40 years. My second question is wh what those are great questions, thank you. The first question, yes. Thats the short answer. It is just objects get old and they do break down. So, in terms of, we take these tunlts like tunlts opportunity to reassess. This is a great example. We had things on display that we take it now, we discover that the Museum Standards is in the 1970s of up to par Museum Standards today. It is always constantly battle to keep the artifacts safe and stable. You had no visitors. Yes. Ted is next. Go ahead, please. Caller good afternoon, first of all, i want to express my aproegs of the induction nation of the first ghost guard craft. It is flying and it is unique to watch it. You can see how display can do an outstanding job on it. I am wondering if there is some additional history of the Coast Guard Aviation like new orleans rescue and things like that sort. We are at a different solution. And so i think as we expand our idea of what constitute iveuatiivaviation history, well look at how we can incorporate ate or story. Thats always adam makiewicz stop i can. I have to say, some of our Staff Members are taking any chances they could get to talk about this. Chris, your next. Thank you for being with us. Hello . Yes, go ahead. Caller can you hear me . I think a lot of 234. Justene, i think it was 347. It came from [ inaudible ] yes, the nuance 1563, comment is a rocket blog. There is one on display and at its original condition. You can head out there and see it, any time you want. Jeff is in nevada. We are talking to jeremy jimmy. Hes the curator. 6789. First of all, i would like to say that you have the best job on the planet and my congratulations to you for acquiring it. With the renovations thats coming up here, you say it is going to be a fiveryear, and people may understand. The goal for the renovation is to close it and stage it so there would be apart of the museum thats open. That way, visitors could still come and exhibits. So they can experience that on the national maul. So those galleries such as paid will be opening and closing as we go along through the successful stages. It will be something open. Jeh is next. Go ahead with your question and comments. Hello, i wanted to know a little bit more of the belichick and the man that brooke the speed record first time and how because was he going . So the yager is a former mustang, it becomes a test pilots. X15, i talked about that between the u. S. Air force and the National Committee and nasa. Bellaire craft, of the whole premise of the aircraft is to in vers gate the beyer routine. He breaks that mystical sound there and help the michigan thinking of the idea of becoming through in young age through 50s or 60s. What are your questions and what are the unknown . Aifruativiation is a very i t interesting topic to be studied riegts now. Well pass it after the flight. Many people say well flay. With your technology, i know there is nowhere else that can go. Are we watching the first, you know, hyper sole judge i can, are they going to lead to aircraft and able to enable to fly to new york and tokyo and ho how are we going to track that . How do we affair of them. What about private billion area employee. Aviation history. And so the process was to dim late and promoting. These ideas of entrepreneurs were fun. Always part o f that idea and pushing that envelope, technology. A few more minutes. John is next in massachusetts. Hello . Yes, john, go ahead. Ai was very impressed with everything that was then. I warranted to thank everyone for everything they have done. My question is will they be expanding at some point of the world one of two sections. Thats there. It is a great question because of world war ii of this major story and aviation that people just draws people to it. The current gallery today is gallery aviation and it is the original gallery of 1986. People who were in world war ii. The reference there is people know it. Now, we are looking fthrough ths transformation, of the museum, well do a new world war ii gallery. Well combine the gallery and provide a larger contextul story of world war ii. 2039 is the hundredth anniversary of world war ii. We want to do this story right and tell the story of people and technology and ecvents in a way that give us all levels of visit everi ers and background. Rick, you got the last call from this segment from wisconsin. Caller hi, my name is rick and i am calling from madison, wisconsin, i have two comments to make, the first one, i appreciate your show, i think it is great especially seeing all the artifacts stuff that you have and my question is do you think that there are many items missing from your display and how many do you think you will purchase in the next few years. As part of our professional duty, we have a collection rational, it lists the object that we have and it also says why we need and what we need and what are the new objects that we would take. It can range from a complete airplane like a boeing 17 from world war ii or part of an airplane such as a drop tank. We do not have a drop tank that we are looking for. Those are the kind of things that we want to accentuate and improve. As general david pointed out that only a small percentages here. Right, we have a certain percentage here on the National Mall. It is quite a few of our artifacts are in stores. Jeremy kinney, thank you very much for your time. Happy 40th birthday. Thank you very much. It is more than just aviation. It is Space Exploration from moon to mars as we continue our tour inside this museum. Each week american artifa s artifacts, taking viewers across the country. For most people, their first chance to see what had been audit in the 1960s and early 1970s during this heroic age when human ventured off to space and all the way to the moon. All of this was exciting and thrilling and people just flocked into the museum to see it.
