And burned in 1987. The second was an interim capitol. The third one was commissioned in 1901 and built in 1902 through 1906. It was built in the renaissance style. Both inside and out, it has just an astronomical amount of ornamentation. Its an amazing work of art. As youre working in, were at the west of the main entrance out towards states street. As you approach up the exterior staircase, you walk up the center and the rutunda rises up 218 feet up. The four murals, actually show an allegorical filgier with a sense of realism. So theyll have then theyll have blast furnss. Pennsylvania, iron, Steel Industry and then presided over by the roman god of the forge. Angels leading ships anchor chains to the new world, which represents pennsylvania as a bastion of religious freedom. The spirit of light actually has oil with Angels Holding flames over it. Youll have these 8 foot tall windows as you rise up. Most people ask about the green on the dome. They are actually red clay tiles, but they have a an empire green glaze. The entire roofline running up there is actually green tile. Were in the Senate Chamber Pennsylvania State capitol building. Three principle chambers in the building. Each chamber has a unique architectural motif it keeps with. So its all part of the american r renaissance. Its really a unique piece of 24 karat gold leafing throughout the entire capitol as you can see on the ceilings. Most of the furnishing is still historic. The desks here are still historic. The furniture in the front. The carpet is reproduction carpet and so are the draperies. It was to recreate european motives as possible. It all really stemmed from the 1803 chicago fair. Hed taken the grand tour and came back here inspired and wanted to produce basically european buildings here in the u. S. And thats where the design stems from. Its called International Unity and understanding. It has a central figure, and then everything moves towards that. So the arm is the earth skrunding and the slaves of the earth be freed as they approach the unity. And then on the other side she has president lincoln giving the gettysburg address. Violet oakley lived until she was 87 years old. So in 1955 she actually came back before the senate at that time. So she went into great detail telling them what the representations were for them. And the murals were put here to inspire the senators. The house is probably the most ornate room in the building, arguably. Done in the italian renaissance versus the french renaissance of the Senate Chamber. There was only about a 15, 20 year period where a capitol like this would have been built, that guilded age. Thats what houston call it. Thats what we still call it, the pennsylvania palace of art. Because were at the height of industry, height of capitalism. It wanted to show its industrial, commercial wealth. And it did that thru the capitol building. So all this gold leaf and aluminum leaf and copper and Everything Else incorporated wanted to show its at the height of architecistry. They actually go up through the next floor through giants chains and turn buckles. And theyre attached to the steel tresses of the roof so they dont fall. The big chapd leers were done by a Bronze Company out of new york. The smaller sconces were done pie the pennsylvania Bronze Company located in philadelphia. The murals in the chamber here, the first mural is called the apothioses of pennsylvania history. So we have a state figure up at the top. And loosely grouped by famous religious figures in pennsylvania history, famous generals, explorers, filan thul thrupistes and the like. He kind of took that and worked into his own understanding. And then the last mural on the other side is the first public reading of the declaration of independence through the steps of independence hall. The mural on the ceiling is calls the ours mural. And that was participated by edmund abbey as well. Originally they were going to the corporate a stain glass dome into the ceiling. They decided to put another floor above that, so they moved the dome. And well see that in the Supreme Court chamber. Its the 24 hours of the day from light to dark. And its allegorical maidens that says from light to dark. And then the zodiac signs are depicted behind that. Ady was a native to philadelphia but reel an english expatriot. Addy had done work for pennsylvania murals. He was supposed to do all the principal rooms. She didnt complete but given the commission through the senate and Supreme Court chamber after addys death. Were currently in the supreme superior court chamber. Tis is part of it design of joseph houstons plan for the capitol. This is one of three philadelphia, pittsburgh and here in harrisburg one of three spearer Court Chambers in which the dome can meet. It was brought here as they were adding a fifth floor to the building. So even as the building was being constructed in 1906 they were kind of running out of space and moved more rooms. Its got basically a pept house over top that lets light come in from the sun. So its faux lit from the inside. So on cloudy days the dome is still lit up, but is also allows Natural Light to come in. She spent 25 years of her life producing work for the capitol. The First Commission she got was in 1902. These werent installed until 1907. So she worked on the senate and Supreme Court at the same time. Basically it represents her whole idea of what the revolutionary law is. The murals on this wall, since were facing this way, william blackstones kmenitaries, its a unique one. You see this figure of blackston s sitting and looking at you from the bench. And then lined up behind them are hymenest thinking. And then at the very top viola painted a portrait of herself in that. Most people dont see that. She asked a librarian for the history of law and he said there wasnt one. And she said well, ill have to write one. So she basically wrote one through her paintings and go through different law, pennsylvania law, u. S. Law and then world law. Its a really original work she has depicted here. The capitol preservations role is to actually care for the fine, decorative arts, the historic and architectural arts of the building. Our goal is to really protect the 640 room, the historic fabric, any of the artwork or architecture. Thats the type of stuff we deal with. So historic furniture, the clocks, historic civil war flags, you name it. Were a little bit varied in what we do. Its one of just a few that are as ornate as it is. And we take great pride in keeping it that way and in trying to ensure that rooms just arent gutted and that theres an aesthetic there that we try and showcase it as the masterpiece that it is.
