Suffering its worst attack in 13 years. The attack took place in a popular tourist shopping area in the heart of barcelona. Two suspects now arrested. Ashley webster has the latest. Ashley. Ashley yeah, liz, it has been a little chaotic as the information has come out of barcelona. As you say, the latest number 13 dead, 100 injured, at least. We are told that 15 of those are very seriously injured, so the death toll could go higher. We have two suspects, we are told, in custody. Its unclear how many suspects may be involved and whether the search goes on for others. One of those suspects who was widely reported by spanish media and around the world when his picture appeared on television in spain, the individual said wait a minute. Thats not me. I live outside barcelona. He turned himself in and said, yes, thats my picture. That is my name. But i wasnt even in barcelona. And then told police that he believes his identity and all of his documents were stolen, he believes by his younger brother. So a little bit of a twist there. That individual who has not been identified is believed to have rented that white van and as you say, liz, drove it down a very busy and popular pedestrians boulevard in the very heart of barcelona. Witnesses say it was traveling at up to 50 miles an hour and at one point even zigzagging trying to hit as many people as possible. The other incident thats been reported is a car that blew through a Police Checkpoint in another part of barcelona earlier today. That led to a shootout with police and one suspect was killed. It is still unclear and spanish authorities wont say whether that incident is actually related to the van attack. But, again, the center of barcelona tonight its late now in barcelona is shut down. Plenty of police presence. Still searching going on as they try to get to the heart of who may have taken part in this attack. We do know that isis through its media arm has claimed responsibility for the attack. But, again, liz, still more information coming out. Are there more people involved . We dont know. But what we do know is that one of the most popular tourist destinations in europe have become a tragic scene tonight as we, again, report 13 dead, 100 wounded, and that number could become worse. And isis has been at the top of their drive to drive jihadist attacks, as you and i have spoken just in the last week, we know about the attack broken out of australia, which was the attack on airlines and phosphorous bombs, et cetera. And then we know about the one that was going to be launched on trains on inspire magazine simply a few days ago was found to be inspiring. So this is not a surprise. And now they found a city, barcelona which was not attacked. Spain hasnt been attacked in over ten years since the madrid bombings. So this is a whackamole program. There are thousands a report out of france yesterday, liz, said that there were 18,000 jihaddists that were being tracked in france alone. The uk has 28,000. Im sure spain has in the thousands. I dont know the numbers out of spain. But realize that there are just too many to follow. Why . Were not following the ideology. And as we learn more, im pretty confident were going to see that these folks were connected to islamist ideology. Liz your point is well taken, and youre saying the number in the double digits. Counties like france, i think the intelligence and other forces there. Numbers in the thousands. To your point, again, the world. Look at the number killed. 19,800 since 1990. And weve been completely missing in action on engaging a third pass, if you will, of more moderate ideological options for muslims and reform. Liz the Trump Administration is saying this will never be the norm. This will never be the new normal whats going on here. In the west, there is universal revulsion. They murder muslims and nonmuslims alike. Doctor, heres the thing. Are people finally around the world going to use the term islamic terror . Are we no longer exceeding to blackmail to avoid defending when the majority of muslims reject this radical ideology, and they are victimized too. The reason they have to use this term is we cant treat a disease that we cant diagnose. And once you diagnose, you enable the treatments that we need to have. And these symptoms, this virus that keeps coming back and back, you cant employ the right treatment against the cancer or the virus unless you know what youre treating. And it is a threeocratic version, a supremacist version of islam that wants the west to withdrawal its ideas of secular freedom, religious freedom, treating everyone equal under the law. All those ideas are threats. They want to invoke laws, and they do that by weakening our resolve. And the moment, liz, that we call this a new normal is the moment we surrender to isis and surrender to the radicals because they want us to consider this normal so that we simply go away from the business of trying to win the hearts and minds of muslims who currently this is why you often see multiple attacks is because remember, the paris attacks in november 2015 were followed by the same cell acting in march of 2016. They hid out within communities that were completed separated from the rest of european society. And the Security Apparatus couldnt even get them because of that. And still now two years later, were still talking about increasing in the tens of thousands of threats because were just not treating the disease. Liz to your point, theres something in the mindset of the terrorists that weve talked to Law Enforcement and intelligence officials around the world. They dehumanize people as the other. And they dont treat them with the humanity and respect that they deserve. Its striking in a age of Nuclear Weapons, proliferation there and genetically bioengineered toxins, something as simple as a van can kill so many. Exactly. I mean, they will continue to morph the weapons they use from vehicular jihad to trains to whatever it takes to invoke whether its machetes. Its not about the weapons. Its about invoking fear in random events that appear to be random but allow innocent tourists and others to feel that they cant be normal. They cant live a normal life. And we cant change who we are, and we shouldnt. But if were going to counter that, we need to look at the precursors before they get militarized. We need to look at the precursors of the groups that say that muslims are victims, that muslims are victims of bigotry. That they dont fit into society. All of these memes, if you will, that tell muslims that they cant live happily as free thinking muslims in the west, that radicalizes them and begins them on the course of radicalization and creates the separatist idea that makes them for operationalling in a van into killing innocents and dehumanizing them in that last step where nonmuslims become simply dehumanized individuals that they become targets. Liz to your point, Oxford University looked at the background of terrorists and most of them are university trained. They become engineers or doctors. But, sir, these are decentralized and lethal. Very dangerous terror network. They have franchises all over the world, and theyre using the benefits of capitalism to do their plots. You talked about it. Laptops and smartphone devices. The people that can provide support. And also looking if theres any external direct operation from the Islamic State or some of its operatives. So that can happen in a matter of hours. I guess the headline now out of barcelona is the van driver, the person responsible for mowing down innocent people in that main pedestrian boulevard in the center of barcelona, is still at large are. Spanish police talking to media late tonight say the two suspects in custody are not, they believe, the van driver. They say those suspects one, a spanish national, the other is a moroccan but they did not say where they believe the driver is and, clearly, the manhunt dose on for that individual. The goes on for that individual. The other piece of news, a couple of things. The shooting dead of a suspect who went through a Police Checkpoint in his vehicle, police at this point say they dont believe that is attached to the van attack earlier today. Now more developments of a house explosion about two hours south of barcelona in a small spanish town. An explosion that at first was thought to be a gas explosion. Police and firefighters responded, and then a second explosion. We understand two people have now been reported dead from that explosion that happened p late last night. Sixteen people injured including some Police Officers and firefighters. Bottles of butane and propane were found at that scene. Now Spanish Police say that late night explosion, they believe, is linked to the van attack today. So theres a lot of moving parts. Bottom line is two people are now in custody for this attack that left 13 dead, 100 or more people injured, but they do not believe at this point, the Spanish Police, that they actually have the person who was behind the wheel of that van. Well, weve seen this movie before, liz. The fact is, we dont like it. We saw it in new york city on 9 11, washington, d. C. , chattanooga, fort hood, orlando, san bernardino, i could go on and on, paris, nice, the whole world, and were at it again. So we are not solving the basic problem of defeating and deterring and dissuading this evil ideology. We need to do that. Elizabeth cnn host wolf blitzer said there will be questions raised if this barcelona terror attack involving a van crashing into a crowd of people was a copycat of what happened in charlottesville, virginia. Sir, you just pointed out and weve been reporting paris saw vehicle attacks, nice, london, berlin, stockholm. Why are they comparing it to charlottesville . I mean, the use of vehicles has predated that. Cnn itself has reported the use of vehicles in terror attacks before what happened last weekend. Why are they trying to compare it . Its insane. Its purely the leftwing media. Theyre trying to keep that built up. It was, look, it was a republican excuse me, it was a democratic mayor, a democratic councilman or city manager and a democratic governor. It should never have happened, liz. That was contrived. James comey, ill be quick, former fbi director said officials worry about a diaspora of terrorists coming out of the middle east via the collapse of syria. Thats a very valid concern and something weve got to work very closely at and get the patterns of behavior. But it goes back to the mosques and to the islamic faith ideology itself. They must be held accountable, and leaders around the world, we must call it what it is. It isnt violent extremism, it is radical islam. And our leadership in the white house, the president calls it that but not the whole team, but we as a nation must call et what it is call it what it is and the rest of the world must and hold the Islamic Society and ideology leaders accountable. The 9 11 report uses the term islamist terror, i think seven times, a whole chapter entitled islamist terror in that report. Trump has repeatedly called it islamic terror. It makes it faster to investigate and see the connection, right . Yes, it does. And what is the ideology were facing, its the quran, the sayings of the prophet and sharia law. Those are the things that make this an evil ideology. Again, the numbers that we first showed you are from 1990. The media really not reporting the totality of these numbers, sir, over the past few decades. Exactly. And the media has been in denial, in all honesty. If it wasnt for fox news that would at least articulate the issue and have balanced points of view, no one else would be talking about it, liz.
