It is really one of their choosing because of so many of their policies, and i think this pandemic really highlights the need for our government to focus on how we deal with the longterm geo strategic challenge of china, and this cold war that were going to have with china is really i think the defining issue of the 21st century in terms of international politics. Jon the covid19 virus originated in china. There are still questions about how. But it definitely originated there. Now it appears china is engaging in cyber spying to try to figure out how were handling it. Listen to the assistant attorney general for national security. It would be crazy to think that right now the chinese were not behind some of the cyber activity that were seeing, targeting u. S. Pharmaceutical companies and targeting Research Institutes around the country that are doing Coronavirus Research treatments and vaccines. Jon so china is trying to, what, steal information about how were handling and potentially developing vaccines for the coronavirus . So jon, look, this is another problem. You know, the chinese for years, really decades, have made promises to the United States. They have made numerous decades i mean numerous promises about not stealing intellectual property, and yet what i call promise fatigue is something we have to deal with china all the time. They make promises, and then they break them. This is another example of that. I think we should be looking at sanctioning the entities that do this, but again, the longer term issue here, we need to have a longer term strategy with regard to dealing with china, beyond the pandemic. You know, we have a lot of strengths. We have the strengths of an innovative economy. We have the strengths of a professional and lethal military, the best in the world. We have the strength of a network of allies, great energy that we have in terms of our ability to produce energy and free people, but these are the things that we need to think through in terms of our strategy, longterm, on how we deal with the chinese and what ive called a new cold war that this pandemic is in many ways accelerated, and it is going to be a big challenge, but i think the United States is clearly up for it. Jon we have the strength of an innovative economy, but as you well know, the chinese often steal those economic ideas through that intellectual property theft. How is this administration, do you think, ready to hold the chinese to account . I think they are. I think, you know, whats the new awakening of the challenges that we have with china certainly in the senate are quite bipartisan. So theres a lot of interest with regard to Holding China account, but i will tell you, some of the immediate things that we need to be looking at with regard to china is, for example, bringing manufacturing back to our country, making sure the supply chains that we have recognized or make us so vulnerable, for example, with pharmaceuticals or Critical Minerals are coming back to our country. I will tell you one other thing, jon, that i think is important. We need to punch a hole through the propaganda that the chinese have in our country. They have a big operation. Just look at whether its, you know when was the last time a hollywood movie studio made a movie that was critical of china . You look at what theyre doing with regard to the news articles that they have, in our papers, the institutes, theres a whole host of things we need to be focused on with regard to china, its intellectual property, its propaganda, and its the theft that you mentioned of some of our key industrial trade secrets. Jon one of the white house advisors, Peter Navarro says hed like to see china billed for compensatory damages over the coronavirus. Listen. I think that there needs to be a national discussion, has to be bipartisan, has to be bipartisan, about compensatory damages by a country that inflicted this pandemic on the world. How would you enforce it . Thats above my pay grade. Is that something that you and other senators would entertain, some kind of some kind of essentially economic bill given to china over the virus . Look, i think it is something that were definitely entertaining in the senate and the congress. I think it is bipartisan, but again, one of the strengths that we have is that this isnt just an issue between the United States and china. This is really an issue between china and the world. As i mentioned, we have a really Strong Network of allies that we should be working with on all these issues because so many thinged that i mentioned, not just the so many things i mentioned, not just the pan ddec but the intellectual property theft and the buildup of the military, some of our allies are going through the same things, including the issue of economic compensation. I know the germans have talked about it. Thats when we bring real strength to the table and something we will look at in the senate.
