Out that we are at the scene and just to the left of our camera is where that press conference is supposed to start at any minute now where we understand the Austin Police chief in addition to a representative from the atf and the fbi will be speaking and that will be the first briefing of the day. And we hope to learn a little bit more new information because right now one of the Biggest Challenges we have been told so far is the time of day in which this occurred. This happened at 8 30 or so last night. So the sun was already down. It is hard to get a scale and scope of the crime scene. So, at first light today, those agents were out here scouring the scene. And because of that, coupled with now the fact that police are believed or under the impression that a trip wire or some kind of an other trigger may have been involved, they put it on lockdown. This neighborhood, residents were told to stay inside for fear someone else could accidentally detonate another bomb if there happened to be more hidden around. Last nights incident happening in southwest austin, a different part of town and different mo than the other three explosions. And locals are on high alert. Listen. We were surprised because it had all been concentrated on that side of town, you know, and this is probably lower income neighborhoods, i think. This is a real nice neighborhood. Nice homes. Now, this makes the fourth explosion in a little more than a week here in austin, texas. The three others, which killed two people were all packages that were left on someones doorstep or porch with a bomb inside. Last night, according to officials, was a device that was left near a roadway and went off injuring two men who happened to be going by on bicycles. Not clear if they were the ones who triggered the explosion with the trip wire. So, again, a whole lot of Unanswered Questions at this point, this press conference, moments away from starting. While i was talking there, we saw some officials starting to make their way up to the podium. I see some now also starting to make their way up, official looking folks, the police chief and i say officiallooking folks because some of those people are wearing suits and a lot of those are federal agents oftentimes. We say that the bureau of alcohol tobacco firearms and explosives clearly involved in this investigation as well as the federal bureau of investigation and those federal agents usually wear suits, they are coming up to the podium now. John and melissa, this is something that certainly dont hear about in a major u. S. City. So, this is so unusual, i hear the press Conference Starting now. Lets listen in. The special agent in charge for the atf. Christopher colmes, special agent in charge for the fbi. Assistant chief with the Austin Police department. Again we are here for an incident that began last night at approximately 8 32, when we had an explosion take place in the neighborhood behind us. That explosion injured two people that were walking along the side of the road. Those individuals are currently in a local hospital. They are a 22 and 23yearold males. Both. [broken audio] both in the hospital right now. They are in stable condition. But they did receive significant injuries from the explosion that took place. Where we are right now, we have made the scene safe this morning. As you all know we held the scene last night given that it was dark and trip wire make in effect on this device, given the safety concerns, that gave us for not only this neighborhood but for all of the Public Safety officials that are here working this, we held the scene overnight so that we could process it in daylight in a much safer way. What we have been able to do this morning is do another sweep of the entire area, so that we know that the area is now safe, and we now have the specialists from both atf and fbi conducts the post blast investigation behind us. We have Additional Resources being brought to bear in austin to continue assisting us in this ongoing investigation. We have bomb technicians from both the San Antonio Police department as well as the houston Police Department enroute and Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting us as well bringing in Additional Resources. There has already been a significant preference from our federal partners since these events began. And as we reported yesterday, we have over 500 agents and their teams working on austin cases alone. And we have Additional Resources being brought in again by both of those agencies and as has already been broadcast, there is a 100,000 reward out there for someone who can give us a tip leading to the identification of the suspect or suspects in this incident, along with another 15,000 reward thats been put out by the Governors Office for the same. We would like to reach out to those that live in the travis country neighborhood behind us. If you have Video Surveillance on your house, whether it be surveillance cameras, nest cameras, anything like that, we want to get your video footage so that we can have that analyzed and identified, any potential suspicious persons, vehicles, or anything that may be of interest to this investigation. So, again, if you live in travis country. And you have Video Surveillance on your home please contact us, 5129745210 so we can get in there quickly and get that video. This neighborhood is still being locked down right now for safety. And we expect it to be so until approximately 2 00 p. M. Today. But we will update that as necessary throughout the day. Again, were doing this in overabundance of caution so that we can keep this neighborhood safe while we process the scene. There is still a significant amount of evidence, as you can imagine with a blast scene like this, the evidence is strewn across quite a significant distance, and its going to take us a while to methodically go through and collect this evidence so that we make sure we get it right. What i can tell you is based on the preliminary review we have done at this time. We have seen similarities in the device that exploded here last night and the other three devices that have exploded in austin starting on march 2nd. Again, this is preliminary information, but we have seen similarities. The big difference in device, again, we believe that a trip wire was used in this device. Agent from the atf is going to talk here in a little while and go over trip wires and what all that entails. That will be covered in more depth here in a few minutes. What we want to reinforce is the safety message that we have been putting out to this community for quite some time. And we have obviously updated that a little bit. In the past we have been talking about the purpose of not touching suspicious package and moving and handling suspicious packages. The belief that we are dealing with someone using trip wires shows a higher level of sophistication and skill. Now what we are imploring the community to do, if you see any suspicious object or item that looks out of place, do not even approach it, but, instead, call 911 and report that to the Police Department so we can send folks out to check that and ensure that it is safe so, again, do not approach these suspicious items, anything that you may see, whether it be a bag, a backpack, a box, again, this is why we have avoided giving specific descriptions of the prior three devices because there was never confirmed that that would be the design that this suspect or suspects would stick with. Thats the Important Message today, to this community, is make sure that you are safe and make sure you contact us if you see something that looks suspicious or that looks out of place. Again, we want to ensure the safety of this neighborhood and we want to make sure that were doing everything we can as we work through this investigation to do so. With that, im going to ask agent, special agent to come up and talk a little bit about trip wires. All right. We want to talk a little bit about this because this device is a little more sophisticated than what we have seen to date. All the evidence from the previous devices is that the atf National Laboratory as will this evidence. Trip wire is a victim actuated switch, literally used as some kind of wire and when this pressure pit on that wire, it activates or detonates the device. It can be either from tripping over it, or picking up the package, any tension thats put on that wire, sometimes its thin filament. Sometimes its fishing line. But like the chief said, we have even more concern now that if people see something suspicious they just stay away from it all together and contact Law Enforcement. Because if they move that package, or if they step on that trip wire, its likely to detonate. We want to put that information out to the public and make sure that if you see a bag, a suitcase, a box, anything thats unusual and not normally in that area, call Law Enforcement. Were bringing in extra explosive canines in order to be able to check out all those packages and make sure the public stays as safe as possible. Thank you. I want to highlight, obviously this is very concerning to us, the fbi has brought in over 350 special agents to work here. Its an unprecedented response to austin. We are here to support Austin Police department. I want to highlight again with these packages, with this trip wire, this changes things. Its more sophisticated. Its not targeted to individuals. Were very concerned that with trip wires, a child could be walking down a sidewalk and hit something. Its very important that here in austin, if anyone sees anything suspicious, you do not go near that package and you immediately call Law Enforcement so we can get bomb techs out there to deal with the suspect package. Additional teams have been brought to bear here in austin with the area Police Department, the state bomb squad, the federal bomb squads are here. Were bringing in extra bomb techs as we speak to make sure that we can handle every suspicious call that happens here, not just in austin but in the surrounding communities as well. So it is very important that we stay away from anything we consider to be suspicious. I would also like to highlight there is 100,000 reward out right now for anyone that can give us information that can lead us to stop the bombings. We need this to stop. Were very concerned that people can get hurt by this, just by walking now we have trip wires. 100,000 is a lot of money. And were hoping somebody knows something and that they can call us and help us stop whats going on here. Thank you. And the only thing that i will add before we open it up for questions is we have utilized the reverse 911 system. However, many of you all are probably aware there was a glitch in the system and it went out across the majority of the city. We are putting out through social media travis country is the only neighborhood that is affected and travis country is the neighborhood that we want to have people stay sheltered in place in their residences until 2 00 p. M. This afternoon or until we advise further. With that we will go ahead and open up for questions. At what time are you going to clos call this domestic terrorism. Thats been the question all along is this terrorism . Is this haterelated . And were early on in the investigation. Today we have only gotten into the preliminary phases. And as the day moves on, that is something that were going to analyze. We are clearly dealing with what we expect to be a serial bomber at this point, based on the similarities between now what is the fourth device and, again, as we look at this individual and the pattern and what were looking at here, we have to determine if we see a specific ideology behind this or something that will lead us along with our federal partners to make that decision. What are you all doing down there . Right now the atvs are here just in case we need to go into green belt. Again, were not certain from which direction the suspect or suspects may have entered this area. They are here in case we need to get through the wooded area here as part of the evidence collection process. [several asking questions at the same time] any other neighborhoods . Are you searching in different places . So what were doing what we talked about before, this has to be a community response. This is something we are going to solve as a community. The officers working the neighborhoods are paying attention not only for the suspicion packages but also items that may look out of place. The department of Public Safety is going to send additional troopers into the austin area to help us patrol and be visible in the neighborhoods and to help us look for those suspicious items or just to inform the community of where we are at with the investigation. So there is additional work being done on this. For this latest one work up a suspect profile or any kind of information about who he was targeting . So, as we mentioned yesterday, we have had a large number of tips that have come in through the past week and each and every one of those tips gets worked by the teams we describe. They come in to the command center and they get assigned out to either a team of atf investigator or fbi investigators or Austin Police department investigators. So, throughout the course of this past week, there were points in time where we had persons of interest because of information that had been provided. And then as we further first degree the investigation into those individuals, either their background or social media life, things like that, we have run those leads to ground. And, at this point, we are following up on a few more. We have had persons of interest. And we continue to look at a few. But we have not identified a suspect or suspects as of this time. With the two latest victims in this latest bombing, was the package visible . Was the trip wire visible . I think people want to know what they should be looking for . Yeah, so, as far as speaking to the victims, they are obviously in the hospital receiving care and thats what were concerned with. We have had initial conversations with them to get an idea of where the device was and the device was sitting next to a fence is where we expect it to be. Again, as a special agent talked about, the trip wire can be a filament wire, it can be fishing line, it can be a metal wire. Thats why people just need to Pay Attention so see if there is a device seeded somewhere near. The trip wire would be attached to that device and it would pull on it to then activate. Again, thats what we need is people paying attention for suspicious objects, bags, boxes, backpacks, anything that just looks out of place and then especially if they see any type of a wire extruding from that. Anything else at all about similarities, material, anything . So what we have said to this community from day one, we are going to give you information that keeps you safe. Thats why we got on camera at 1 30 in the morning when we felt like there might be a trip wire in play, because we didnt want to wait until this morning to put that information out, because thats information that kept keep this Community Safe. The specific components of the bomb, the firing mechanism that these suspects the suspect or suspects are using, that doesnt help keep the Community Safe and that is something being kept confidential by us and federal partners to protect the integrity of the investigation. Is it difficult to set these without suicide bombing . [inaudible] a little more broad, what does that tell you about the person behind this . Well, again, as we said from the very beginning, we were not willing to classify this as terrorism, as hate because we just dont know enough. And what we have seen now is a significant change from what appeared to be three very targeted attacks to what was last night an attack that would have passed would have hit a random victim that happened to walk by. So we definitely have seen a change in the method that this suspects or suspect is using. Do you know enough about why the suspect is doing what they are doing . Were they walking along the sidewalk of the fence and came across this trip wire or walking between houses . Can you help paint a picture of how they actually came across again, this is all preliminary. What we believe they were walking either on the sidewalk or grassy area between the street and the fence. So they were not walking between houses but alongside a roadway. Suspect earlier, do you think so this suspects or still has a message for police . Well, again, we have opened the ourselves up for a message, thats why we asked him to contact us and gave him phone numbers to contact us at and again we wont understand what the motive might be behind this or the reason behind this until we have an opportunity to talk to the suspect or suspects that are involved. Objects that are suspicious. People adjust their lifestyle in any way until there is a solution of this. I think people need to be vigilant. People need to Pay Attention as we have been saying. You know, back since the past week and a half is Pay Attention to your surroundings. Pay attention in your neighborhoods. If things look out of place, if there are suspicious persons, call us. Let us know whats going on and that way we can come out and we can look into that to see if it is at all related to what we are having hasp in austin right now. If its not and therefore we can put that to rest. Sophisticated. A sophisticated device. Does the trip wire suggest a military background . You know, a trip wire doesnt necessarily suggest that there is a military background. What it does suggest though is that the suspect or suspects that we are dealing with have a higher level of sophistication than maybe we initially thought, based on them changing their methods to a more difficult device. Last question. Yesterday afternoon you asked the suspect to contact you with their message. Do you think last night was their response . You know, we wont know that until we have an opportunity to talk with the suspect or the suspects whether or not that was a motive behind this. Thats just something were not going to know and to that end, again, i will reach out to the suspect or suspects and ask that you contact us, ask that you reach out to us. Communicate with us so that we can put this to an end. There are innocent people getting hurt in this community. And it needs to come to a stop. The last thing we want to have is another injury or another death in our Community Related to this incident. Thank you. Anything to indicate that he wants to talk to you alleluia . The last one different from the others and more sophisticated in that it was apparently attached to a trip wire and two guys walking by tripped the wire and set off the bomb. Melissa they said they to hold in place until daylight and search the area to see if there is anything there. Obviously this is getting more sophisticated as time goes on. They feel like that reward now being over 100,000 is something that could attract folks to give information. I dont know wow, scary situation. Jon yeah. Melissa all right. Jon major meetings today for secretary of state nominee mike pompeo who is sitting down with the man he is set to replace Rex Tillerson. This as pompeo also planned to make the rounds on capitol hill. Meetings with lawmakers ahead of confirmation hearings. He is already facing opposition from within his own party. Pompeos positions are too much advocate for regime change. I think pompeo isnt a good fit to be a diplomat. Jon senator paul says he will take all necessary steps to oppose not only pompeo but the woman tapped to take over for him at the cia gina haspel. Another story we are watching this morning. President trumps Attorney Says the president has no plans to fire the special counsel investigating russias election meddling even as another lawyer for the president said the probe should end. This coming after President Trump lashed out directly to the special counsel on twitter saying, quote why does the mueller team have 13 ladderrenned democrats, some big crooked hillary supporters, and zero republicans . Another dem recently added does anyone think this is fair . And, yet, there is no collusion . The president s lawyer ty cobb in a statement saying in response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the administration, the white house yet again confirms that the president is not considering or discussing the firing of the special counsel robert mueller. Bob cusack, editor and chief of the hill joins us to help us sort it all out. So he is angry on twitter but they say, again, this isnt about firing mueller, so was is it about in your mind . Well, i think the president is clearly frustrated. We saw the House Intelligence Committee wrap up its investigation. And i thought that the Mueller Investigation would be certainly toward the end. And it doesnt seem like its going to be. Think about the timing. He really cant release any finding. If he releases any type of final report because a lot of this information is going to be classified right before the election. So, this could go on, melissa, i mean past november its clearly frustrating the president. They say no plans. There is going to be another shoe to drop here. Melissa what do you think is the point of the tweets to sort of undermine the outcome before it comes out. Yeah. Melissa is he ramping up to the idea that i want to get rid of this guy . Because thats what the other side is saying that he is obviously teeing up to fire mueller. But, the white house says yet again we arent even talking about it. Yeah. I think it is to undermine mueller. I think its also to put pressure on mueller. To move along, remember, muellers team has not talked to the president. They want to do that those negotiations are ongoing. I think its all of that. So whatever, if mueller finds something, there is some type of smoking gun, we havent seen it yet. Certainly tied to the president. Then trump can say, listen, this guy has a partisan team. Sandra trey gowdy had some advice for the president. Here it is. My advice to the president is the same thing i just told his lawyer. Give bob mueller the time, the independence and the resources to do the very look, keep in mind, chris, he didnt volunteer for this. He didnt start waiving his hand and say hey, pick me. A trump, nominated Rod Rosenstein is who picked bob mueller. So, give him the time, the resources, the independence to do his job, and when you are innocent, if the allegation i it is collusion the russians no evidence of that and innocent of that, act like it. Sandra you know, thats what everybody said about james comey before he went out and did some things that were uncharacteristic of someone in his office. And then both sides were beside themselves, sort of denouncing him. Yeah. Melissa i dont know, whats your take. I think the president should wait until this Justice Department Inspector General report comes out. It will certainly be critical of mccabe. And it could be very critical of james comey as james comey is about to launch this book tour. You are right. Comey used to be respected on both sides of the aisle. Is the party choosing to move beyond Hillary Clinton . Melissa this just in longtime clinton supporter and senator dick durbin says democrats are moving on from Hillary Clinton after comments she made at a conference in india. Clinton tell the crowds two weeks ago that President Trump won the 2016 election because, quote, his whole Campaign Make America Great again was looking backwards. You know, you didnt like black people getting rights. You dont like women getting jobs. And you dont want to see that Indian American succeeding more than you are. Of what your problem is, im going to solve it. Here is senator durbin. My friend, Hillary Clinton, is wrong. 30 of the people who voted for donald trump had voted for president obama. Why . The same people who look for change with president obama thought there wasnt enough, as far as their personal lives were concerned. And they supported donald trump. That is a reality. The democrats acknowledge. Thats why we are focusing on issues to address this concern they have about the economic and security that many working families face. She raises a lot of money for people. So they are kind of torn between wanting to get rid of her at the same time we like the dough. What do you think of that assessment . I think her fundraising prowess has diminished considerably since 2016 run. I think democrats like myself want we want to the car to keep moving and her to stay at the last station and us to keep going forward. If you look at all the races. Look at the conor lamb race a couple weeks ago, what you saw is this the only the only democratic sort of quote unquote rock star that campaigned for him was former Vice President joe biden. He didnt have Hillary Clinton. He didnt have bill clinton. Because we all understand the clintons were what was the Democratic Party of yesteryear. And we are trying to move our Party Forward and dealing with Kitchen Table issues like everywhere american has access to healthcare and child care affordable. Melissa everything richard said makes sense. It does. Melissa why is it that we keep seeing Hillary Clinton come out . She has every right to go out and speak. It sounds like from what richard is saying that she damaging her partys prospects in the next election . Like i said she has got plenty of speeches planned. She has no plans to go away. Melissa, make no mistake. Hillary clinton still has influence. And the fact of the matter is, she is a cancer in the Democratic Party. Its not bill. Its her. She doesnt even realize why the party lost. She made her campaign about her. Whereas when obama ran for office, it was about hope and change. I know because i campaigned for him in 2008. President trump said that he was going to take a sledge hammer to the establishment and he was more concerned about the issues affecting the American People on the day to day basis. The problem is though, is the money. Because she does have the money and she can campaign for people and raise that money for them niece politicians have to decide are they more interested with the money or the American People and they have to make that choice. Let me make one correction here. All the democratic races that we ron recently so the virginias governors race, the Alabama Senate race, the new jersey governors race, and this recent seat that we picked up in pennsylvania, Hillary Clinton campaigned in none of those races because all those understand her brand is toxic. Melissa we are running out of time. Do you feel the same way about bill clinton on or about nancy pelosi . Do you think the two of them should sort of step out of the limelight while people are campaigning are either of those two appealing. Bill clinton is a good fundraiser and he probably is doing fundraising in the back end in the shadows and nancy pelosi is the minority leader, so she has a role to play as being a leader of the Democratic Party of the house. Melissa let him finish and lawrence then it will be your term. Nancy pelosi could be short lived. The question is should bill clinton be around with the whole me too movement. Should donald trump being around with the moo too moment. Is he not going. Is he being sued by a porn star. What im saying is that you have a party that is leading this charge. And so you have a serial rapist now. Melissa i think we have gone far afield of where this conversation started. Dont get me wrong thats a conversation for another time, of course. But we are talking about this one. And i think i will give you the last word, richard. It seems like nancy pelosi carries a lot of the same babaggage that Hillary Clinton does. She is still currently in office and still does currently raise a bunch of money. Is she, in your mind a little like Hillary Clinton when shy goes out and talks . Does it feel backwards . I think if you notice very interesting nancy pelosi is not on the campaign trail very much. She is raising money. She does have a responsibility to the house caucus to do what she has go to do to raise money. Will w. That can said will she be the leader of the house caucus in coming months . And they also, even putin is very much limited by his economics. And if he does anything thats going to upset that, then his domestic hold starts to become wobblably. He has to be careful and that puts us in a position of influence. Melissa prosecutors continuing to call witnesses this morning in the trial of nora salmon as they work to prove that she helped her husband plot the massacre at the pulse nightclub that left 49 people dead. Prosecutors say omar mateen carried out the deadly rampage and that salmon helped her husband scout targets and concoct a cover story. Meanwhile, graphic new video of the shooting was released last week as part of salmans trial.
