Nothing is off limits and cohen should expect to get questions from anywhere about anything. Todays hearing is a closeddoor session with the Senate Intelligence committee. Tomorrow well get to see cohen testify publicly before the House Oversight committee and on thursday he will go back behind closed doors to take questions from the house intelligence committee. At tomorrows Public Session there is word cohen will provide evidence the president broke the law while in office. Thats according to our corporate cousin the wall street journal. It reports the crime is related to a hush money payment to a woman who claims she had sex with the president. The president denies the affair and blames cohen for any problems with the payment and cohen has admitted lying to congressional committees in the past. Why should congress trust you now, mr. Cohen . The white house raised similar concerns ahead of the hearings. Press secretary Sarah Sanders said its laughable that anyone would take a convicted liar like cohen at his word and pathetic to see him given yet another opportunity to spread his lies. Michael cohen is set to spend three years behind bars starting this spring after he pleaded guilty to Campaign Finance violations, tax evasion, and lying to congress. If im stepping aside for a minute the crowd has gathered by the second floor of the Hart Senate Office building where the secure facility is where Michael Cohen has been answering questions now going on for at least five hours. We saw senator angus king. He left and looked down and didnt take any questions from reporters about the substance of the interview. Cohen at arrived on capitol hill early this morning. He took a back route which effectively allowed him to be shielded from reporters. We only had a very short walk to capture video as he went into the secure facility. Republicans and democrats wanted to hear directly from cohen today about why he lied to the same committee in the fall of 2017 about this trump tower moscow real estate project being discussed during the president ial campaign. He testified in 2017 that the discussions ended in january of 2016, but the special counsel found otherwise that the discussions continued until june and for that reason cohen was prosecuted for lying on behalf of the special counsel. What we hear from lawmakers is what consistently weve heard from the white house. Republicans question whether cohen is really a credible witness while democrats are very focused on the money trail. Weve been having these hearings and interviews for two years now and i think between us and the Mueller Investigation that we are going to find out just about everything there is to find out about these allegations. And so far there is not much, if anything, to show for it. But what i intend to keep focused on is untangling the very complicated financial arrangement between donald trump and russia. The republican chairman of the Senate Intelligent Committee richard byrd told fox late last night saying they are in the endgame now and cohen is one of a handful of witnesses they wanted to secure before they conclude their report. What are we expecting out of tomorrows public hearing . Well, there are a couple of big things to watch for. First of all, it is going to be a Public Session. Today is behind closed doors. So folks at home can really assess cohens credibility and his statements for themselves. Second, the House Oversight Committee Hearing is focusing largely on events that grew out of the prosecution in the Southern District of new york and to break it down to bullet points they look at issues that relate to compliance with Campaign Finance laws, a reference to the hush money payments and potential and business conflicts of interest and the business dealings that cohen had with the trump organization. So tomorrow very focused on issues related to finance and the trump organization. Not issues related to alleged russia collusion. That has been today. Is kim jongun willing to give up his Nuclear Program and is there something that President Trump can do between tomorrow and the day after to convince him to do it . You mentioned the summit in singapore last june. The first meeting between a u. S. President and north Korean Leader. At that summit kim jongun pledged that he was going to denuclearize. Other than shutting down a couple of facilities that he didnt need anyway, he hasnt taken any concrete steps toward denuclearization which has both republicans and democrats alike now saying that President Trump needs to do something at this summit here in hanoi to push kim jongun along that path. Listen here. We need a clear, concrete roadmap to complete verifiable denuclearization. What the United States must do is continue to apply our pressure, maximum pressure that we can and make sure that north korea doesnt do what they have done for decades. That is, give a little, get a lot. For all of the rhetoric and the puffer from the president no specific steps by the North Koreans yet to denuclearize. Unless something fairly dramatic changes in the North Koreans strategy there will be very little from this summit that is measurable in terms of progress. President trump is going to try to convince kim that giving up his Nuclear Weapons through giving up his Nuclear Weapons he can reap the economic benefits of joining the global economy. Last year in singapore the president showed kim a fourminute movie trailer put together by the cia based on kims psychological profile to try to convince him giving up his Nuclear Weapons would reap him economic benefits. It appears kim hasnt made the choice whether or not that is his future or his future continues to be to pursue Nuclear Weapons. This question of dangling carrots about Economic Development in front of them boils down to whether kim has had a change of heart, whether he thinks that Economic Development, money, capitalism, prosperity is a better guarantor of regime survival than a Nuclear Program. You mentioned at the top of this, trace, the president says he is in no rush to push kim toward denuclearization. There is a chance if kim doesnt start to take moves to get rid of his Nuclear Program the u. S. Risks falling back into the old pattern of a north Korean Leader promising something only to renege on it. What about the White House Press corps being relocated to a Different Hotel in hanoi . Ive covered the white house ten years and been to dozens of countries around the world and never seen anything like this happen. Since that time weve seen the russians, chinese and south koreans violate u. S. And u. N. Rules. Right now were at a point where the North Koreans are laughing at us. Kim jongun is flaunting this. Is well do whatever we want. We dont care about you. I know you say that look, the results are critical and there has to be something hard and fast here but a lot of critics are saying isnt the process just as important, gordon . Dont you have to put one foot in front of the other to get across the street . We have to at least start to go down this path, correct . Well no, not correct. The reason is weve tried this before. For instance the sixparty talks that started in august of 2003. Dragged on for more than half a decade. The stepbystep process. It really doesnt work. You think it should work but it doesnt. What we really have to do is just vigorously apply those sanctions so that north korea realize they have no choice. They either keep their weapons or kim jongun but not both. This is the job of the president of the United States to change the incentives on kim jongun. It is in President Trumps job description. President trump says he trusts kim. Give me an idea what it would take in this summit, summit the sequel, what it would take for you, gordon, to be satisfied . What concessions would kim jongun have to give a little bit of something you would say okay, at least we got something out of this deal . Two things we should have by now. People were talking about this in june. One of them, of course, is a declaration by the North Koreans of all their missile and Nuclear Weapons facilities and the second a firm timetable for disarmament. Those are the two preconditions for further discussions with the North Koreans. If we dont get those, a lot of people say we wont. If we dont get those, trace, i think we have to go not talk to the North Koreans, apply the pressure so they realize that they have no choice but to disarm. Ive got to go. Mark harris released a statement moments ago explaining why he is no longer going to run in the special election for the ninth Congressional District citing health reasons. He said given my health situation, the need to regain full strength and the timing of this surgery the last week of march i decided not to file in the new election for Congressional District 9. He says he isnt running again after consulting with his physicians about a very serious condition he faced in january of which now he has to have surgery in the last week of march. Now, this comes less than a week after North Carolina officials voted unanimously to hold a new election in the ninth Congressional District in North Carolina because of voter irregularities. The United States requested this meeting and is backing venezuelan Opposition Leader juan guaido along with many western and latin american countries, russia, china and others are standing behind the disputed president Nicolas Maduro. People in venezuela in desperate need of food and medicine but maduros troops have been blocking humanitarian aid from entering the country. It has led to deadly violence between protestors and government forces, some people are so hungry theyll eat scraps of food from the back of a garbage truck. Some of maduros soldiers have been desserting. This National Guardsman abandoning his post and running across the border to columbia. Maduro is still clinging to power despite calls from the u. S. There is legislation being proposed that would get rid of the rebates. Lawmakers want it in writing that companies will take action if those go away. The ordeal is finally over for almost 200 amtrak passengers stranded for more than 36 hours. Well hear from some of them in a moment. First lets look at how it all started. The amtrak train left seattle for l. A. Sunday morning. Just after 6 00 p. M. The train hit a fallen tree on the track coming to a stop in oak ridge oregon. Five hours from seattle. This morning it finally began moving pulled by a Union Pacific locomotive to eugene, oregon. Video from passengers shows people sleeping and playing games to pass the time. Dan springer reporting live from seattle and dan, they are now off the train, right . They are. Its a travel nightmare, trace, that they wont forget soon. For those who started the journey in seattle sunday morning it was 50 hours stuck on that train. After about an hour ago the amtrak train was slowly pulled into the station in eugene and some very relieved passengers started getting off that train. They were greeted by a bunch of reporters and even the red cross which had some food and drinks waiting. The plan is to stay in eugene just long enough to restock the train and then continue north up to portland and all the way back to seattle where the illfated journey began. The problem was a major snowstorm that hit sunday into monday and it was a wet, heavy snow that caused trees to snap under the weight. One of those trees fell onto the tracks in oak ridge, oregon, 40 miles southeast of eugene. At 6 00 sunday night the train ran into that tree and there it sat for 37 hours. The crew tried to fix the damage but couldnt. Union pacific, which owns the tracks had to clear them enough to get the rescue locomotive to it. That happened this morning and another fourhour journey back to eugene where passengers seemed in pretty good spirits when they were finally able to get off that train. I only packed five diapers in her backpack. Luckily a really nice lady came in and gave me some pullups. I didnt know what i was going to do. The crew was exhausted, but they treated us very well. And we were warm. Really good news in all this no injuries or sickness on board. Trace and god love red cross. Man, theyre always right on it. What are we hearing from amtrak in this . Amtrak put out a Statement Today saying it regrets the extended delay but defended its decision to keep the passengers on the train instead of letting them go into town. The problem was the whole town of oak ridge was without power. It got over a foot of store in the city of 3200 people and it was dark. Amtrak says the passengers were better off and safer staying on the train which had power and food. Amtrak also says passengers will be given a full refund and other compensation thats appropriate. Forecasters say more heavy rain and snow will hit the west coast later this afternoon. Meteorologist adam is live in the weather center. It has been such an active winter across portions of the northwest. We look at rain moving across Northern California. A little break there in portions of oregon stretching up toward seattle but that is going to fill in as another round of rain moves through. You can see were back under winter storm watches and flood watches and warnings stretching from Northern California up into oregon, into portions of washington and stretching off towards the east as you get into the mountains there will be a lot of snow in some of those areas.
