Looks like larry kudlow will be his guy. Dana i wanted to have you on. Theres word that the white house is working on a new daca deal to protect dreamers and get the wall that he wants. Reporter listen, its a tight rope walk to be sure. Any time theres a conversation, its good for both sides. Keep in mind this is something that both sides have said they wanted to have done. The president wants to tie a deal on daca to border wall funding. Its an approach hes tried before. While im not sure much will happen this time around, but you should know this. The midterms are coming up, right . And so maybe now both sides seeing a opening to maybe craft a deal. The white house for its part is opposing a three for three deal. In fact, not very long ago we got this in a statement. He told the white house securing the border is one of the most vital functions of government and is a core part of any routine funding bill. Bottom line, they want to tie it to the omnibus. Were talking about the democrats. Will that happen . The white house not leaning in that direction but maybe just maybe they can come to some sort of agreement between now and then. Dana . Dana all right, kevin. Thank you. Attorneys are laying the ground work for a recount even as some votes still need to be counted. The latest total shows lamb leading by only a none votes out of nearly 230,000 cast. Well, dana, this race is not over yet. Theres still votes to be cast. We need to count every vote that was legally cast. But there are some questions that our attorneys are looking into. We heard from a lot of voters in southwest pennsylvania and were gonna take those issues pretty seriously. We want to make sure that this is done right and that every vote that should be counted is counted. Dana so youre in charge of the House Republicans trying to keep their majority. In the first year, after any president ial election, thats always a tough one. Historically the president , who ever is in power, loses seats. Last night, even though the race was closer than some expected when they thought conor lamb would win, do you think this race is a little bit of a canary in a coal line when it comes to keeping the majority this year . I think its a wakeup call, especially to our members who have been outraised. I will tell you that this race is something they cant replicate for a couple reasons. Number one, conor lamb did not have a primary and wasnt forced to the left the way most folks in a primary are forced to the left. And he was able to campaign. He campaigned as pro life, pro gun and he attacked nancy pelosi so the democrat campaigned like a republican and that helped him win this race. I dont believe thats something they can replicate in other races, but i think there is a wakeup call on money because our candidate was outraised 5 1. When you get outspent 5 1 on tv, thats a problem. Dana as i was looking today, he said theres about 47 possible competitive house races. The nrcc put in a little over 10 million into this race in order to help saccone. Im assuming you would tell the other members you dont have 470 million to spend on additional races Going Forward in the fall. Well, that 10 million number included outside groups. We put in a little under 4 million. Still, we dont have the money to put 4 million in every race. So the point that i made to a lot of our members this morning is you need to be ready to protect yourself and we will be there to help you get across the line. But you got to do your own work first. Youve got to serve your constituents and be ready for campaign. Dana its possible that a lot of people that are in pretty safe districts like this district the last time around, the democrats didnt even field a candidate. So its possible that Many Republican members dont even realize theyre about to face a tough race. So i think your point that its a warning. I wanted to ask you about the messaging. There was a report yesterday that said that the tax reform message possibly wasnt working in this district. Was that a warning i guess to the republicans that maybe theyve got to do some more ground work legislatively if they want to keep those voters in President Trumps camp . I think our tax reform message worked. But i believe its going to be even more popular by november because, frankly, people will see money in their pocket. Theyll see the economy growing more and more. This race started before tax reform was even passed, dana. I think the dynamics were made before tax reform. Our tax reform message worked but obviously we included other messages because we needed to go after lamb. We closed the race really well. We just didnt quite get across the finish line. Dana what happens next . This race, say 20 million spent on this race. This district ceased to exist in november. Its a lot of money to spend for somebody to sit in congress for seven months during a Midterm Election year. What happens next . Will the nrcc be able to try to switch gears and figure out which district is going to be able to be supported by the republicans and do you have good candidates for either of those race . And will rick saccone be one of them . This district completely disappear. Most becomes a super safe republican district and conor lamb will live in a suburban district that we have an incumbent in. Hes a great hard working smart member of congress who serves his constituents every day. I think the democrats arent even going to be able to keep this district. Theyll need an incumbent member of congress to keep it. Slight republican advantage with an incumbent that works hard and serves the people well and is ready for a tough campaign. Win or lose, conor lamb will run in the fall is my guess, although hes not announced that yet. Thats the district he lives in and the district hes most likely to run in. I mentioned to him that it could be that a lot of republicans have never really had a tough race. So hes trying to get people that theyve got to win early and often. They cant wait to define themselves to their opponents. Your opinion . This needs to be a wakeup call for republicans who are still trying to spin this as a unique result. But in reality it is a big red flag for republican chances to hold the house in november. This is a district that President Trump won by 20 points. He campaigned for the Republican Rick Saccone two times to rally republican voters. There were over 100 districts that are more democratic, more competitive than this one is on paper. So if youre going to lose a disstraeubgt that donald trump won handedly, one where he is still popular and lose it in the way they did, it just suggests the map is even bigger for democrats in states that are blue collar or working class districts that are very republican that could be in play. Dana there were some people that thought lamb would win by a large margin. It was obviously super close. Its conceivable that President Trumps rally did have some impact to try and get more voters out. Thats right. Republicans showed up. Not in as great intensity as democrats did, but it wasnt enough. When youre in a district as republican as this one, you need to have that enthusiasm there. Its a challenge. Republicans are going to look at this result and there will be a domino effect. They will be worried about whether they should stick around in congress and worried ab their own political future. They need to be careful who they nominate in these swing districts. The good sign for democrats is they are getting more candidates like conor lamb. But the challenge is in some of the districts, they have so many candidates, its hard to vet all of them. Dana so if you are in a district running against a republican but that you all of a sudden offer destroying ice and you promise to vote to impeach President Trump, thats probably not gonna cut it. We have a real life example in texas where democrats spent research and money trying to basically get this very liberal candidate in texas and make her unelectable for a general election. She said she never wanted to live in rural texas when she lived in washington. Her husband is a big Bernie Sanders supporter. Its been an unstated policy to say essentially assad can rule this rough state that he now controls. But we have seeded territory to iran, russia, turkey. It is a great power contest. We have deployments there to try to detract from action against our allies on the ground. We will be there for the foreseeable future. Seems like a grim assessment considering that mr. Assad will be in place and whatever portion of this country he controls. But, theres a partition of this country we are in control of partsist, russia an iran are in control of parts of it. To the extent that assad has won this civil war is a puric victory. The idea here that they would convert to paying benefits out of general revenue would mean that they would only cover about 3 4 of peoples Social Security payments. It should not have been. What it shows is candidates matter. Conor lamb fit the district very well. Thats why you saw him pulling out a victory in a place democrats have no earthly business competing. Dana matt, you and i have remembered 2006 very well. I was curious when you realized during that year that the republicans had their work cut out for them if they were going to try to keep the house. We had a couple of issues that were problems. We had a president who we respected and loved but he was tanking in the polls to be honest. We had an economy that was incredibly shaky position. And the country was very war weary. The difference between 2006 and today, President Trumps policies are very popular. The economy is chugging along. In a loft districts were talking about, trumps numbers, especially on the issues hes pushing and in this district tariffs were popular. More popular than people think. Whats unique about this race is the republican incumbent who had to resign in disgrace, it was one of the most disgusting examples of congressional arrogance i have ever seen. And the voters were mad at the Republican Party and they had to bear under that situation. So thats unique in this case. I do think with conor lamb, lets all be honest. He ran away from nancy pelosi. If that is what alouse democrats to be more successful at the polls, im kind of okay with that. Id like to see a Democratic Party that is more moderate than the elizabeth warren, Bernie Sanders wing. He resigned in disgrace. But what about republicans, what would you tell them if they think theyve always had a safe race, should they be worried right now . So theres a lot of republicans who are on air, their roosters crowing. Theyre saying this is terrible. Wakeup. Republican party is headed for disaster in november. I dont agree with that. I do think its good. Whenever i have had political problems, i have always been the person who is the most worried in the room. I am the most worried. Every republican should be worried. Not just because republicans are right that President Trump will tank their chances. I dont agree with that. I think theres a lot of political change. I think the American People are ready to try fresh new candidates. If youre a long term incumbent you ought to be careful. If youre a republican, you ought to be careful. The American People are okay with divide government. The democrats have got to come up with a theme and stand for something the American People want to get behind. Yesterday there was a report that even in orange county, which has been really a republican support, is a place where democrats are looking for possible flipping of seats there. Where do you think you have the best possible chances regionally . Well, if the election in pennsylvania was an indication, id say everywhere. But where we will really see gains is some of these suburban seats. Places like minneapolis, new york city suburbs, orange county. Matts right. A lot of these republican incumbents havent been challenged in awhile. You hear republicans saying rick saccone was terrible.
