It has a bad connotation because the United States was hurt bad by nafta. John roberts, do we have anymore than earlier . We understand what was behind this. Follows along the president s desire to craft bilateral deals, country to country as opposed to doing these big multilateral trade negotiations like the Trans Pacific partnership. The u. S. Trade representative, Robert Lightheiser said when they were negotiating with mexico and canada, at certain times there were 1,000 people involved in the negotiations. The president decided that he was going to trim it down to by literal negotiations with mexico. He said the relationship when it comes to trade between the United States and mexico, canada for that matter, had grown badly out of whack. He admitted coming up with today ideal was not easy. Listen here. It wasnt from any standpoint something that most people thought was doable when we started. Look at the beginning, many people thought that this was something that couldnt happen because of all of the different factions, all of the different sides. The complexity, too. And we made it much simpler, much better, much better for both countries. The outgoing mexican president who will remain president until december 1 said he was thrilled with this way this was negotiated, had big praise for President Trump and said he would love to give him a big warm hug. Listen here. And im very grateful, mr. President. I want to tell you that i greatly recognize and acknowledge your political will and your participation in this. Yes, this is of course a negotiation that has taken months. Its been difficult, complex. Very hard negotiation altogether. Difficult moments, of course. So difficult moments but it came together. Lets run through some of what this deal is going to do. One of the biggest things, it will change the rules of origin when it comes to automobile manufacturing. Lets put it on the screen. 75 sorry. Ill tell it to you. 75 of all of the parts that are used to put together a car will now have to be sourced from the United States or mexico. Thats a big shot across the bow to china, who had been funneling auto parts through mexico. When the requirements were 65 . It will enhance trade in agriculture and make more use of u. S. Textiles like yarns and threads and things like that. Now, i know youre interested in this earlier. So the sunset provision, this is not the hard and fast Expiration Date that the u. S. Trade representative had been looking for. Rather, what this will be is that initial 16year agreement with a sixyear review period. After that review period, if they want to go ahead with it, they will renew it. If they need changes, they can rereview it every year. Not the hard and fast thing that some people were looking for, but still some sort of a sunset provision. Dana what has the response been from canada . Swift. Canada will send a delegation to the white house later this afternoon to meet with jared kushner. In a statement saying, canada is continued to be encouraged by the progress between mexico and the United States. Its a necessary requirement. Canada saying we will only sign a new nafta good for canada and good or the the middle class. This does put pressure on canada. But this is a real shot across the bow im told by sources here to china. What the United States wants to do is get bilateral deals with mexico, canada, the e. U. , japan, other trading partners and turn their attention to china to say youre going to get lift behind or get on board. Dana. Dana thanks, john. A growing memorial outside of john mccains office in phoenix. Colleagues in washington plan to honor the late arizona senator throughout the week. Mccain died saturday at age 81 after a yearlong battle with brain cancer. A family spokesman reading mccains farewell letter to the nation a short time ago. If you bear with me. These are johns final words. The family asked we present these to you today. I often observed im the luckiest person on earth. I feel that way now as i prepare for the end of my life. I loved my life, all of it. Ive had experiences, adventures, friendships, enough for ten satisfying lives. Im so thankful. Dana mike emanuel is live on capitol hill where theres no doubt a lot of emotion about mccains passing. Mike . Absolutely, dana. Good afternoon. A quiet day here so far. Many senators are still flying back from their home states. Make no mistake about it, this week will be largely devoted to paying tribute to a legendary senator, john mccain. On friday, senator mccain will lie in state in the u. S. Capitol rotunda. That will be an opportunity for the public to pay its respects. Saturday a Memorial Service at the National Cathedral here in washington d. C. Youll have staff, colleagues and former president s expected to attend. On sunday, a private Burial Service will be held in his beloved United StatesNaval Academy in annapolis, maryland. Already colleagues are paying tribute to senator mccain as someone eager to find common ground. Thats one of the biggest lasting legacies of senator mccain. He never stopped trying to find ways to work with people, even if they had been opponents. That tireless work to bridge divide was one of the things that most impressed me about this great man. John mccain was also famous for fighting for what he believed in. He has received a great deal of credit for putting his country ahead of his own party. That is part of his legacy. A republican senator spoke about what it was like clashing with mccain. Having a confrontation with him or two always left you wondering what in the world just happened, number 1. Number 2, will we ever overcome it. The next day, john was back to being john. Other senators are reflecting on his role as being a mentor to them, someone that loved the United States senate, a real institutionalist. He enjoyed bringing a new senator under his wing. Dana . Dana thanks, mike. I wish godspeed to the man that was my former opponent and the man that will be my president. I call on all americans as i have often in this campaign to not despair of our present difficulties, but to believe always in the promise and greatness of america. Because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history. Dana that was part of john mccains concession speech the night he lost to barack obama. The former president saying of his onetime rival, we shared a fidelity to something higher, the ideal for which generations of americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched and sacrificed. We saw our political battles even as a privilege. Something noble. Im pleased to be joined by richard fontaine, a former Mccain SenateForeign Policy adviser and the president of the center for a new american security. Richard, great to have you here with us. I wanted to have you talk about mccain as a Freedom Fighter and his belief that america was a force for good around the world. That much animated his entire approach to Foreign Policy and national security. Senator mccain has been known to say that the most likely past to a Meaningful Life is to serve a cause greater than your selfinterest. He thought that for the country has true. Americas role in the world had to be more about prosperity and security. It was about helping those that couldnt help themselves. Bringing the blessings of liberty to those around the world that werent able to enjoy them. That did animate him. Dana tell me about your travels overseas with him. One of the things is that mccain could be a lot of fun. You talked about those experiences including also when you were in canada. You visited the old residence of a poet, robert service, who was very familiar to john mccain. Yeah, thats right. Of course, we took plenty of trips to war zones in iraq, afghanistan, a all kinds of other stands in other places as well. There was a trip, i believe, in 2006 when we went up to the Yukon Territory of canada. We landed on white house where nobody on our deligation had ever been before. The mayor of the town there said offhand that the canadian poet, robert service, had grown up nearby. Of course, nobody in the delegation heard of robert service. Mccains eyes lit up. He got excited about this. We couldnt figure out why. He explained when he was in prison in hanoi, he spent two years in solitary confinement with time on his hands. His cell mate on the other side of the wall had been required to memorize poems in school. They developed, all the pows, the tap code to communicate. He taught mccain the poem that he had been taught in school. One of them was the creation of sack mcgee who grew up in the white horse area in the Yukon Territory. Then mccain disappeared. He hopped in a car and didnt come back for an hour or two. Came back eyes shining because there was the residence of this poet whose work he had learned in tap. He then proceeded to both recite it verbally and in tap all those years later. Dana he himself says that he was not perfect. He was often hard but always had your attention. You said that he insisted you call him john and that he treated you as an equal even though you were several decades younger than him. Yeah. It was striking. When i first started working for him, i thought john mccain, senator. Yes, sir, yes, sir. Little things. But he went by john. The staff called him john. When he would we would go to a meeting, he would drive his car and id ride in the passenger seat. Show me the senator that rolls that way. He wanted us to push back, tell him when he wasnt doing something that was wise, argue with him. He didnt always make it easy to tell him no. He argued back. If he at the end of the day decided you were wrong, you would salute and march off. But he wanted that give and take. He wanted that sort of flat organization, none hierarchy, informal kind of group of people around him. That is one of the things that made it so wonderful to work for the man. Dana let me ask you for a final word about what you think the senate will be like without john mccain and the future looks like for some of those issues, some of those freedom fighting issues that he cared for so much. I think washington in general is out of the mood that we should be promoting a lot of democracy and human rights around the world. Theres the sense that its too expensive, it doesnt work, it means war and half the time or more we get something out of the effort than we wanted. Yet i think we really abandoned those principles at our peril. There are heirs to senator mccain in the senate, and i think part of the extraordinary response that you see to his passing is not just about him as a man but what he stood for about what people hoped that our political system can deliver. Dana richard fontaine, im sure this is a heart breaking week for you. Thanks for being on the show. Thank you. Dana a couple of big primaries in arizona and florida. Dana that was lanny davis, Michael Cohens attorney when he addressed the Infamous Trump tower meeting and trumps knowledge of it. Now he seems to be walking that back, telling the Washington Post i should have been more clear including with you that i could not independently confirm what happened. I am not sure. Theres a possibility that is the case, but i am not sure. Joining me now is john yu, professor of law at the university of california at berkeley. Good to have you here. I want to talk about the davis thing first. I understand that hes Michael Cohens attorney. But it seems to me that even for an attorney that that was pretty reckless and irresponsible. Look, you can sympathize with mr. Davis for having someone like cohen was his client. Cohen has a thin grasp of the truth. Who knows what he told davis in time one versus now. Cohen is a bag man. He is a guy that pays off women with hush money. Now what cohen is trying to do and maybe he lied to his own attorney. Its not uncommon. Hes trying to exaggerate his importance to prosecutors thinking that he will cooperate and get a lower sentence. Mr. Cohen has contradicted himself in public. Im not sure we can believe what hes saying. Dana you run the risk if you take your case outside of the courtroom and youre going to take it to the court of Public Opinion on television, you run the risk. Do you think it would be better for Michael Cohen if he and lanny davis stepped back and stopped giving so many interviews . I agree. What cohen is trying to do, i guessing with davis, trying to use the public forum to pressure trump, to pressure the prosecutors, to win a better deal for himself now that hes pled guilty. The better thing for him is to clam up and stop trying to manipulate Public Opinion of the press. Because hes contradicting himself, which makes him look like a liar. Dana especially when your lawyer has to walk it back. That doesnt make anybody look good. Can i ask you another question . Listen to Alan Dershowitz on fox and friends this morning talking about the Mueller Investigation and President Trump and the separate Michael Cohen investigation by the Southern District of new york. Watch. His presidency and his businesses are in the Southern District of new york. Not with mueller. Remember, the Mueller Investigation all involves issues that have constitutional defenses. The problem is with the Southern District, theres no constitutional defenses. These are business investigations. Of course, the president cant be indicted. His businesses can be indicted. Dana so were talking about taking things outside the courtroom and the public of opinion. Were talking about these on tv. Theyre of interest. I wonder what you think about Alan Dershowitzs concern for the president saying the Mueller Investigation, not as big a deal or worrisome out of the Southern District of new york. Would you agree . How would you explain that . Alan is the master of inside and outside the courtroom. I dont want to disagree with him. I agree with him. The real threat to trump now is coming from new york, not washington. If you look at the course of muellers investigation, the manafort conviction, which is a great victory for mueller, doesnt involve trump, russia and the 2016 election. Looks like mueller is focusing on obstruction of justice right now, whether firing james comey was obstruction. In new york, you have, if cohen is telling the truth, you have evidence that President Trump might have conspired with cohen to violate the Campaign Finance rules. I will disagree with alan on this point. Theres one defense that trump can make. He cant be while hes president indicted of a crime. The constitutional solution of a bad acting president is impeachment followed by prosecution, this goes back to what we talked about before, dana. The real solution for President Trump, i think, is to testify under oath in public with mueller about what he did in both cases. With cohen and trying to hide the hush money and with mueller about whether he fired james comey to obstruct justice, he can end what was once called the National Nightmare were going through with these investigations by telling the truth about what he was doing. Dana you hold that position because you believe hes the chief Law Enforcement officer. Thats why you think that, correct . Yes. Hes the head of the executive branch. Hes the only one given the responsibility the carry out and enforce the laws. He has to and should set an example. His constitutional duties come first. Not his personal liabilities as an individual donald j. Trump, the president , the man in the office of the presidency should cooperate with the Law Enforcement part of his job. Dana arizonas governor is facing a tough choice as he has to find candidates to fill john mccains seat as republicans are holding a primary to replace outgoing senator jeff flake. William la jeunesse is live in phoenix. William . Dana, its highly unusual. Arizona will have two new senators next year. The flake seat, the primary is tomorrow for that as well as obviously john mccains seat. Theres several names under consideration. Two former congressmen, two prominent business women here among others. The question the governor, does he want somebody like cindy mccain or somebody that they know will run in 2022 for the senators seat. The governor said yesterday he will wait until all of the services for senator mccain are over until he makes that decision. John mccain is irreplaceable. This week in arizona will be about honoring him, his legacy and comforting his family and the other arizonians and well deal with that responsibility at the appropriate time. So what happens next . Tomorrow excuse me. Wednesday there will be a private service here at the capitol in the morning. Then the rotunda will open up in the afternoon for the public to pay their respects. Thursday morning, a service at north phoenix baptist church. Joe biden will speak there. The senator will be flown to washington and lie in state at the u. S. Capitol. Sunday, laid to rest at the Naval Academy, a spot that mccain chose. While at the academy, mccain was a boxer. He remained a huge sports fan throughout his life. Cardinal receiver Larry Fitzgerald will speak at services here. Last night at the diamondbacks game and the cardinals game, there was a moment of silence in the senators honor. Please stand and join in a moment of silent reflection of senator mccain and his Tireless Service to our country. Now, at the white house, the American Flag is lowered by president ial proclamation customary when a sitting senator dies in office, flags are lowered from that date of death throughout the day of interment. That would be sunday. As you can see, dana, the flag is at full staff. Back to you. Dana thank you, william. Josh kraushaar is here with us. You spent a week or two ago in arizona on the ground covering the other Senate Primary that we know is hot and heavy right now. When you think about what you learned there on the ground about the Republican Party in arizona, how it may have changed or not, what kind of pressure is governor doocy under in terms of finding and deciding on the replacement and is his own reelection to the governorship on his mind . You have to realize, arizona is something of Political Center of the antitrump republican movement. Jeff flake and john mccain were among the most critical senators in the entire body towards President Trump. But the republicans in arizona are much more conservative and pro trump. The leading Senate Candidate for that primary on tuesday, Martha Mcsally has been more supportive of President Trump than john mccain was. So you have this really tough divide that the governor will have to deal with. You have to satisfy john mccains family, republicans that won an electable replacement for the senator for 2020. But theres a lot of conservatives that want someone that is more to the right than mccain was. Doocy will be trying to satisfy both sides. Dana what about tomorrow . Ma mcsally, is she in the lead to win the primary . She is. She has the support of Republican Leadership here in washington. Shes on a very disciplined campaign. Shes tried to not necessarily seek an endorsement from President Trump but shes talked about her work with the white house and securing funding for the military in arizona. So she is a heavy favorite to win against kelly ward, joe arpaio. That is one of the Marquee Senate races. Dana well have to keep an eye on to that. Lets go to florida. Tomorrow is the primary there. We know ron desantis and putnam are fighting it out there to replace a retiring senator. What you think will happen there . You can see that im sorry. For governor. Rick scott is running for senate. What do you think is going to happen in florida tomorrow . This will be fun to watch. This is how powerful the president s endorsement is in a republican primary. Adam putnam was the favorite to be the next governor of florida. President trump endorsed congressman ron desantis who was a little more conservative. Desantis is leading in the polls. He has momentum because of his connection to President Trump and hes the favorite because a lot of republicans want to pick the candidate that President Trump endorsed. Dana and the republican and democratic primaries on the republican side as well. Except for rick scott. Well ahead when it comes to the republican nominee will be. When it comes to bill nelson, earlier today, he spoke about gun control. We just had Rick Leventhal reporting on the shooting in jacksonville that happened yesterday. Today bill nelson said this. At the end of the day, it comes down to votes. And are we getting to the point of getting the votes to start passing some meaningful gun restrictions, legislations such as a comprehensive universal background check and the purchase or acquisition of a gun . That quote comes on a day when i saw an article in politico that democrats are concerned that senator bill nelson is possibly, they said, choking on this race. Bill nelson has been very rusty on the campaign trail. He hasnt had a challenge since 2000. So its showing. Governor rick scott is running one of the best campaigns in the country. Hes doing a lot of aggressive outreach to hispanic voters and doing better than republicans respected with the Puerto Rican Community and the cuban american community. Scott is in the league, which is a big accomplishment in the political environment in the state and the country favors the democrats. Dana thanks, josh. Everyone follow him. Power was stripped from super dill gets who were unpledged and vote for whoever they wanted. The new rules tweaked a way state caucuses are governs. Making sure at the end of the day when the process is done to select the democratic nominee, that they feel like their candidate got a fair shake. That the process was fair to everyone and that theyre excited moving forward. Dana joining me now, Michael Blake and maryann marsh, former adviser to john kerry. Good to have you with us. Michael, you with there at the chicago. The super delegates wasnt the only thing. What was the top takeaway . Its time for us to move from a lot of the conversations. We cant ignore perception being reality with the grass roots feeling like were not listening. We were able to move on and make this transition and focus on the people in the states are being elevated. Beyond that, the changes when it comes to the caucus primaries are remarkable. We need to move forward. Dana tell me about this super delegate pate. This is Jason Nichols talking on fox and friends. We always have to remember that super delegates have never swayed an election. As much as i supported Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton won the primary fair and square. It was never in the hands of super delegates. The key is moving forward, we have to make sure that the party is inclusive not only of young people but the people that are feeling disinfranchised. Dana how do you explain the super delegate process now . You have to go back to 1952 when you had to go back to a second ballot. This moving forward, super delegates being party elected leaders, officials, members of congress, they still have their voice heard. They will still campaign, still be endorsing publicly. This is ensuring that people in the states feel that theyre being heard more consistently. Dana so maryann, i follow you on twitter. One of the things you talk about, democrats are always fighting the last battle what did you mean for that . This battle has been going on for three years and they got bullied into it by Bernie Sanders that is not even a democrat. He said but for the super delegates, i would have been the party nominee. That is not true. Hillary clinton won the popular vote and the pledge delegates. She won the super delegates. Winner take all, republican rules, every time, she beat Bernie Sanders. Now because of these changes, frankly, you disenfranchised a lot of women and people of color that are super delegates. Theyve been elected to office by tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of people and theyre accountable to them. Many women have candidates of color have made their way up the ledder. Theyre poised to be super delegates and now they wont be. First, this is not disenfranchisement. The super delegates its a strong argument. Super delegates are less than pledged delegates. 63 of super delegates are white. When you talk about women and people of color, its the pledged delegates that are more diverse. Number 3, lets be clear, the super delegates can still endorse, campaign publicly, still counted on official tallies. If a campaign has 50 of the pledged delegates, they will vote anyway. Lastly, its not a threeyear battle. It occurred in 2008 and for years as well. Someone a part of that campaign, this is about moving forward for 2020. This argument has been going on since 2015 with Bernie Sanders. Not a democrat. Only when he wants to run for president. And youre making this argument is donald trump. Thats something. The fact that the Democratic Party took the bait is ridiculous. Dana do you like that change as miked said, if youre going to run as a democratic candidate for the nomination, that you actually have to register as a democrat . Bernie did that last time. Im more interested in people that are real democrats that fight every day for democrats every year, day in and day out and run as democrats. As we speak, Bernie Sanders is an indicted from vermont. Dana dont worry that these changes were hurt the democrats . 2020 . No. But people like Leah Daughtry are upset about the rules and they should be. Dana what do you think . Its legit. If youre black, you want your voice to be heard. Im not ignoring that. Theres a very real sentiment, a reason why millennials are not aligning with the democrats and republicans.
