Also ahead, if that statement is not true, nbc news anchor Brian Williams is done. Megyn kelly on the case. She will also address Rosie Odonnell leaving the view. I think its going to be difficult. You are about to enter the no spin zone from california. Factor begins right now. Hi, im bill oreilly reporting tonight from los angeles. Thanks for watching us. Is president obama the most polarizing chief executive in American History . That is the subject of this evenings talking points memo . According to a new survey by the gallup organization, president obama has seriously divided the country. 7 the of democrats approve of the job barack obama is doing, just 9 9 of republicans approve. According to gallup, mr. Obama is on pace to be the most polarizing president in history surpassing george w. Bush. There are two main reasons for that. First, the economy. After six years take home pay is down 4 on the president s watch. And secondly the jihad. A situation that is rapidly getting out of control. Over the weekend lt. General Michael Flynn who retired last year as the director of the Defense Intelligence agency said this. The strategy that we have had is not its not working. I mean, its clearly not working. Just look at the kinds of things that we are facing. I mean, you know, in my world, what i have grown up to have to do is define the enemy that we are facing. And, like i have said. If you you capability defeat an enemy that you dont admit exists. General flynn was a top advisor to president obama and joins former secretaries of defense panetta and gates in lamenting americas poor strategy to counter muslim extremism. With isis committing daily base basis president obamas lack of urgency stands out. General flynn is not happy about it. I think what the American Public is looking for they are looking for moral and intellectual courage and clarity and not a sense of and i just say as passivity or confusion. I think that there is confusion about what it is that we are facing. Its not just what has been defined as 40,000 fighters in the Islamic State in iraq and syria. Its also a large segment within this radical version of islam that is threatening our way of life. They do not see a threat to our way of life. Most americans do understand the threat according to all the polls. Barack obama who once promised to unite the country finds himself a divider. Not good for america. And thats the memo. Now for the top story tonight. A new book called believer. It is written by Barack Obamas friend, David Axelrod who guided his election and reelection and who served as one of the top advisors in the white house until 2011. I read the book flying out here to los angeles last night, its a clear guide to how barack obama achieved power. Mr. Axelrod does not criticize his former boss only gently chiding him for blowing the first debate against mid romney. The book demonstrates that David Axelrod remains loyal to barack obama. The factor believes loyalty is a good thing. However, clearly the president is having some problems. And thats what i want to talk with mr. Axelrod about tonight. He joins us from new york city roar than you and i debating policy and thats fun. I want to thinking of the president. Im a simple mans you a know. But i dont understand a brk of stuff. Lets take flynn, robert gates. You know them all. Wouldthey are patriots. Would you say they are patriots . I dont know general flynn. I certainly know the other two and i would say yes they are patriots. Working directly, maybe you were not there at the time but is he a patriot. So all three are patriots. They all say the president does not have an effective policy over all to fight the jihad. So the first question becomes does the president care what these three men think and why isnt he following their advice . Well, first of all, bill, let me ask you, this is a conservatives worst nightmare, i have taken over your studio in new york. I think when word spreads there is going to be salute panic out there. First of all a lot of people patriots general allen describing the patriots. I think we ought to dismiss the notion if you disagree on a strategy that someone is a patriot and someone else isnt a patriot. And i certainly would admit the motion, bill, because you are asking me as someone who knows the president that the president doesnt care or doesnt feel a sense of urgency. I know karl rove is around here somewhere. I saw him earlier. I think karl could attest to the fact that any person who sits in that chair anyone who has to it hear the who listens to the daily intelligence reports in the morning, who is responsible for the lives of American Service people, intelligence officers, and who feel the sense of responsibility for the safety of the American People has to feel a sense of you are general sismt he may not agree but i want to know what the thinking is, according to these three guys the strategy is confused muddled and give concrete examples. We learned over the weekend that isis has spread to libya and to egypt. On the president s watch isis gained thousands of territory, thousands of miles of territory in syria and iraq. Taking over the second largest city in iraq mosul. When asked about it, the president said isis is the jay vee clearly embarrassing, clearly made a mistake. I dont understand why these mistakes are happening mr. Axelrod. Tell me why they are happening. That comment about isis being the jay vee, did that happen after they took over mosul, i dont think so. They were on the move. You have got your ordering wrong on that point. Look, i think that clearly not just american intelligence but intelligence around the world was taken aback by the quick movements of isis. The reason that it became possible was, of course, because our ally, Prime Minister maliki didnt do what he should have done which is to forge a pluralistic governing structure there. You can make the argument whatever you can also make the argument that barack obama pulled the soldiers out of there and his military advisors, most of them said dont do it because you are going to leave a vacuum that was filled by isis. Again, what you are saying to me. You could say that but i disagree. Correct me if i am wrong barack obama doesnt see at this juncture in history he doesnt see that his strategy to fight isis and the other jihadists is failing he doesnt see that he believes its succeeding is that what you are telling me. Look, im not in the white house right now. I only know what the president has said publicly, i think its what he believes. He said from the beginning that this was going to take a long time to degrade isis. We needed to involve partners in the region that he we needed to build a collision that america couldnt be and shouldnt be the point of the spear that we had to have a functioning government in iraq. 10yearold girls are getting raped and killed. People getting set on fire and beheaded. You can theory rise all you want. The president s policy isnt working. What do you think. Put you president of the United States for a second which your viewers may want. I put forth the answer that you have to basically get a ground force. There is 40,000 of these people, go in and kill them. Should be an international force. This should have been convened months ago. The president keeps looking away from the situation saying oh, we will get it done. Its not enough. It is spreading. The three top guys panetta, gates, and flynn say there is no strategy. It should be concerning. Do you think that i have a bunch of other stuff. You have posited your theory about how we should send Ground Forces to in to secretary gates . Do you think he agrees with that . Yes, do i believe that they all agree there should be International Ground force. I think there is a great deal of debate as to. Not among those those gentlemen. American troops and with the American People there is. I mean, solve the same voices calling for this were the same voices who were calling for us to invade iraq in the first place. Not an occupation situation. Its a confrontation situation. Its not an occupation. What happens then, bill . Are we going to stay in perpetuity . No. We kill them and then we leave. If we have to go back we kill them and then we leave. Your assumption is thats it, there is no more anywhere else . This doesnt inflame the situation if they dont have recruits coming in, this doesnt inflame does it add to our security or does it detract from our security . You really want to use the word inflame after the jordanian guy was set on fire . Is that the word you want to use . Come on. I have got to get to this. Prayer breakfast. Roll the tape on it. Yes. You dont use the word crusade, number one in any context right now. Its just its too fraught. A week after a boy lot is burned alive in a video shown, you dont lean over backwards to be philosophical about the sins of the father. You dont get more left wing that ms. Mitchell and heres my question. Did president obama know, in your opinion when he said this made the comparison to the crusades that all hell was going it break loose pardon the pun. Absolutely he knew that. Why would he do it. His point is that we have a quarter it of the worlds population are islamic and the vast majority, the vast majority of them have nothing to do with extremism, and his point is let us not define that entire quarter of the planet by the actions of extremists lets isolate the extremists just as we wouldnt blame every christian for the acts of some christians every jew for the acts of some jews. He wanted to make that point and he used that forum, all right. I understand. Bo bergdahl. Is he going to be charged as deserter. And now you are facing a president who trades five top taliban terrorist commanders for a deserter. Did he know that that might happen in your opinion . Do you think this is going to become a huge story, did the president understand the implications of trading a deserter for five top taliban commanders . I dont know that anybody had designated him a deserter at the time. The army did before the trade was made. Then what was the investigation about . The investigation was to certify that he was a deserter. I see. There was initial investigation. After he left his unit and there were a number of u. S. Soldiers killed looking for him. There was an investigation and the conclusion was he was a deserter. The president had to know that. Bill, the practice of the United States is that we dont leave anybody behind. We may hold them accountable when they come back but we dont leave them behind. You still think he thinks it was a good deal . That was the that was what provoked that decision. That was the explanation. Does he still think its a good deal, do you think . I havent talked to him about it i think he would stand behind what he has done. All right. Now we are going to take a break and we are going to go domestic. Is it as fun . Im loving it, man. Okay. The name of the book is believer. We have more of mr. Axelrod in a moment. We will talk about al sharpton and reverend wright, i know he will love that big trouble with Brian Williams and Rosie Odonnell megyn kelly will take a look upcoming. New aleve pm the only one to combine a safe sleep aid plus the 12 hour strength of aleve. Welcome to the most social car weve ever designed. The allnew nissan murano. Nissan. Innovation that excites. Add breathe right to your Cold Medicine shut your mouth and sleep right. Breathe right. And look for the calming scent of new breathe right lavender in the sleep aisle. Continuing with lead story. Lets begin the seeing is wanted about race. You write in your book about reverend wright. It was only after wright attacked president obama in philadelphia that the president repudiated him and you made that clear in the book so. For years obama was a close friend of Jeremiah Wright. We all know that he is radical preacher. Then there is al sharpton with a defined history of racial provocation and big time tax problems and barack obama has embraced him. I dont understand any of that, can you explain it. Reverend wright was his minister and obviously the things you call him whatever you call him and obviously some of the things he said were incendiary but that wasnt the relationship that the president had with him. That wasnt those werent the sermons that the president heard in church, those werent the sermons that he regularly delivered and, you know, you should also point out he is honored u. S. Marine and he is he was internationally recognized religious leader. I think you can characterize him one way or another. You characterize him. The president said what the president did was he criticized and very very clearly the things that reverend wright said only after criticized him. And it was only after Jeremiah Wright came out and called obama a flack. To wont, again you got your ordering wrong. Im taking it right out of there. Now you are not. I wrote the book. You are not taking it out of there. Not taking it out of events. Im saying this respectfully. He gave a speech in philadelphia after reverend wrights comments became known. Reverend wright then attacked him and then reverend wright attacked him for the speech he made in philadelphia. Later in a tour around the country and said and repeated some of the offensive things. Wasnt an attack on obama. He repeated some of the offensive things for which obama had criticized him and at that point the president said, you know, im not going to continue this. And he left that church. Sharpton, you know Everybody Knows a resume. All right . Why . Why would and i have to say i was invited by the president to the brothers keeper announcement at the white house. I was honored to be there. I think its a great program. Brothers keeper program. Sharpton okay. Im saying to myself okay. Its okay for him to be there, but now its morphed into sharpton is there more than 80 times. A signed picture that says to my fellow warrior for justice, i mean, are you kidding me . With al sharpton . Bill, you know you dont decide and i dont decide who leaders in a community are. Al sharpton is widely regarded as a leader within the africanamerican community, he is a civil rights leader. Do you think the president respects al sharpton . I think he respects his leadership on these civil rights issues, yes, i do. He owes millions of dollars to the irs, his organization millions of dollars is there any other american in the white house who owes millions of dollars to the irs . I dont know, i havent gone through the tax returns of people coming to the white house. Isnt that strange . No. I dont think its strange. There are people who have had. Look, donald trump has im sure been in the white house. He has gone through bankruptcy proceedings. He has had financial problems. That didnt impeach him from being a visitor in the white house. It doesnt a debt to the federal government. See, i cant understand the al sharpton thing i really cant stand it there are so many other good civil rights leaders, not polarizing, not anticop, not tax dodgers so many. And why this guy has reached that pinnacle, i dont know. All right. Lets get to the economy. Yeah lets do it. You will well remember this sound bite. Roll it. Okay. The problem is that the way bush has done it over the last 8 years, driving up our National Debt from 5 trillion for the first 42 president s number 43 added 40 trillion by his lonesome. Thats irresponsible. Its unpatriotic. All right. Number 44, president 44 has added 8 trillion, almost in six years. I dont understand. He was so against adding to the debt. Let me try and enlighten you on this point since you dont understand. I dont understand. There was an intervening event. It was called the Great Recession. Was there economic catastrophe. Didnt that interscreen on bush. Look, what happened under president bush was that we had two huge tax cuts and a war that would cost trillions of dollars. Two wars. Two wars, you are right. Two wars. First time in history that we had tax cuts at the same time that we were waging war. And there were people john mccain and others who warned that it was fiscal madness. It was fiscal madness. President obama knew that when he made that statement about being unpatriotic about that debt. He has run up more debt than all the other president s combined. That wasnt a mandatory exercise for president bush to cut taxes in the middle of a war. That wasnt a mandatory exercise. The fact is that the Great Recession was something that the president walked into. When we met before he even took office, the economist said to us this is going to add trillions of dollars to the debt. And it did add trillions of dollars to the debt. Out of the recession and going to add 3 more trillion by the time he leaves office. We are out of the recession. Bill, he had he has deadly cut these. Not about its debt. Thats how you add to the debt bill. Thats how you add to the debt. But he doesnt have to add to it with all the tax money coming in. Steadily cutting. More tax money coming in than any other time in history. More than 3 trillion this year. I dont get it. And look, the entire economy is growing. And as a percentage of the economy, the debt is about a third of or less of what it was when he im sorry the deficits are about a third of what they were when he took office. So he. Still astronomical. Slowly chipped away at that. Last question. I agree with you though that it is not wise policy to cut taxes when you are at war. I dont think future president s will do that. All right. I dont know if its wise policy to raise taxes when take home pay is going down as it has under president obama. Last request. I believe and i think im right on this. I am probably wrong on Everything Else that i said to you tonight, that his main goal as president of the United States, what he wants to be remembered for is social justice. Yes . No. I think well, i think there are a lot of things. The main thing he will be remembered for is leading the country through the worst economic crisis in history. He will be remembered for bringing the troops home from afghanistan and most of the troops home from iraq. 180,000 troops when he took office most of them are home today. He will be remembered for health reform, he will be remembered for financial reform. He will be remembered for ending discriminatory practices against gays and lesbians and he will be remembered for trying to lead us forward to deal with this issue of flat wages and economic immobility that every republican b. As well. Mitt romney and the entire republican field is talking about it is a tribute to the fact that the president was on the right track in the first place. All right. Mr. Axelrod, thank you very much. It was very interesting to talk with you tonight. Thank you for reading my bic book, bill. I enjoyed it and i hope everybody checks it out. I appreciate your loyalty to your guy. As i said in the beginning loyalty is very important to us. Directly ahead, karl rove will respond to that interview. Then, later, the guy who sings the song happy using the Grammy Awards for a demonstration. We will take a look at that in just a few moments. It doesnt mean you have to. With tena, let yourself go. Be the one with the crazy laugh. And keep being their favorite playmate. With tenas unique super absorbent micro beads that lock in moisture and odor. Tena lets you be you. Impact segment tonight. Responding to David Axelrod joining us from new york city, karl rove. Its interesting youre very loyal to president bush the younger, having worked for him. Some say got him elected. Axelrod very loyal to barack obama, same circumstance. So you guys have a lot of n. Common right . Well, would very more in common than you might expect. We share one other thing. When my book came out david sent me a kind note and i learned something about him that his that his father committed suicide and my mother committed suicide. We had both of us shared that in our lives as adult. That both of us had lost a parent to suicide. Im sorry. But you are both believers. But what you believe in totally opposite. Absolutely. Absolutely. I thought it was interesting that you you all started tonight by talking about motivations and about questioning motives and he made a big point about that. And, yet, its his principle, the president barack obama who routinely questions the motivations of people who disagree with him politically. He got paul ryan in the front row at Georgetown University or George Washington university and said his budget proposals were unamerican. He suggested republicans only wanted to hurt old people and poor people and some of his allies have gone out and suggested that any opposition to president obama among his political critics was rooted in racism. I mean, i thought it was very interesting departure point for the interview. Now, i believe that David Axelrod told the truth that barack obama believes that his policies towards the jihad, isis and al qaeda are working. When i see whats really happening over there, and now we know isis has expanded to libya and he egypt and other countries as well. Are you worried as i am, that our president believes his policies are working when they are not working . Yeah, they are not working. You know, its interesting barack obama when he was in the United States senate was a constant critic of president bush and was saying, you know, what are the metrics . How do we know . What is the measurement . And this Administration Just simply asserts its working when the measurements that we do have available to us, the amount of space that they occupy, the number of deaths being caused. The number of refugees being forced out awful these metrics are going in the wrong direction. You know, is a cary had an interview with president obama in india that was broadcast a week ago. Tlz really remarkable interview. Notion to the United States or the world order. You look at the middle east and what happens if a caliphate exists in the middle in the heart of the middle east fueled by oil riches how difficult is the world going to be . How much is the world order going to be changed . How much danger is there to the United States, our friends and our allies in that region and elsewhere . Even president seems to accept the fact that there is a growing challenge, for example, it was he who went out and he and his wife drew attention to the attacks in nigeria in which hundreds of school children, school girls were grand by islamic extremists in. It troubles me. But i want to point out. You and axelrod were yucking it up in the studio though. Look, we can be pleasant and i can disagree with what this president has done, you know, thats one of the great things about our country is that you can believe passionately in your views and disagree he is very good what he does. Very good strategist and very loyal guy, which is what you need. All right, mr. Rove, we appreciate it. Plenty more ahead as the factor moves along this evening. Brian williams still hanging on at nbc. But Rosie Odonnell out at abc. Megyn kelly will update us. Goes to florida to find pirates. What do you think is going to happen to bergdahl . I dont know what that is. Bergdahl . Is it a man . We hope you stay tuned to those reports. Yohoho the real question that needs to be asked is what is it that we can do that is impactful . That somebody was pharrell the happy guy. Dont waste your time heres why because im happy. Bring me down cannot bring me down to bring me down. They had their hands up while the piano guy was playing. Joining us from new york city Mary Katharine ham and from washington juan williams. So, since the hands up thing is a myth never happened why is the hands up thing at the Grammy Awards . Juan . Because its become a symbol for a movement, bill. I think you know that i mean, thats what that and i cant breathe and black lives matter, thats all become a symbol of people who are legitimately critical of Police Behavior when it comes to interaction and deaths of young black men. Interesting you used the worth legitimately. Fine i cant breathe was said. Black lives matter opinion piece. I have no problem with it hands up false narrative. You are going to face your protest on a false narrative, juan . Its been im not the hippest guy, i think you know what that means. Kind of a way that people talk about it, its symbolic, you are right. Let me just say that bill oreilly is right we do not know that Michael Brown in ferguson, missouri had his hands up but it has become the way that people talk about difficulties between especially poor black people and the community. I will say this, i wish that the artist and i think artist legitimately are critical of our society. They help us to better see our society. I wish they were as critical about black on black violence about black family breakdown. About bad schools in black communities, i dont see them ever, ever along with the civil rights movement. No, they dont because the industry the Music Industry has contributed to that largely. Breakdown of the family unit. How do you see it marry catherine . I think you are right to point out that look, the facts of this and the idea of the false narrative is not exactly correct here. But this is a larger movement. I think we should give some allowance for that with artists. To me, even though i dont agree with them and not part of that movement necessarily, i i understand what the artists are are doing and it doesnt bother me that much in a show an awards show, as a conservative, especially not surprised to find that the grammys are full of liberal leaning political statements where im a grown up, i can deal with that it doesnt surprise me that much. I dont want to fact check backup dancers for the rest of my life. This is the grammys. Did you just say you are a grownup Mary Katherine . Has that been established. Yeah been true for a while. All right. We have to because we spent a lot of time with axelrod we have got to let you guys go but, juan, i understand your point. I respect protests in america, i always have. I think with all due respect to everybody involved. Including if a relative who is very happy and happy is he happy. Okay. If you want to get your point across and persuade people that dont agree with you. I think you are right about that. You dont use that because thats bogus. He has made unorthodox comments about. Other folks have not said. He is a more complex guy than just this. We got him they got us talking about it. Thats right. Im a simple guy and farrell, the happy guy is complex. Thats the problem. All right, thanks, you guys. We come right back, megyn kelly on Brian Williams holding on at nbc with Rosie Odonnell out at abc. Megyn is next. Thanks for staying with us, im bill oreilly reporting from california. And in the kelly file segment tonight, over the weekend, nbc anchor Brian Williams took himself off the air. Thats because he mislead people about his war experience in the iraq. Also Rosie Odonnell out at the view after just five months. Joining us now from new york city mismegyn. You see her right after the factor. So, this williams story comes down to new orleans. Here is what he said about hurricane katrina. I accidently ingested some of the flood water. I became very sick with with dysentery. Our hotel was overrun with gangs. I was rescued in the stairwell of a 5 star hotel in new orleans by a young police officer. We are friends to this day. It just was i look back at total agony. Megyn, whats going on . Well, now in the wake of his comments about his experience in iraq, which were clearly not true and have been you know, he has told a series of untrue things said a series of untrue things about his iraq experience for years. People are looking at his other reporting. This is one claim that has been in doubt by those who were with him and those who knew him for quite some time. He claimed that his hotel the ritz carlton overrun by gangs. Those there at the time have challenged that, although others agree that there was a, quote criminal element that had gotten into the hotel but was turned away. Now, and then he also said that you look out your window of your hotel room in the French Quarter and you see bodies floating by you face down. And the manager of the ritz carlton there were never any bodies floating by ritz carlton. A. P. Photographer and captain came out and said they had seen bodies in the vicinity of the ritz. This is what it has come down to, bill. Everything is being annualized. I think the cop that he refers to that saved him, thats going to make or break it for williams. If the cop says yes yeah, i did save him from the gangs he is okay. If he says he didnt thats over. The problem for him is and i defended him the first couple nights on the air when he had said that his helicopter took rpg fire and in fact ak 47 fire. I thought okay maybe he did conflate the memories but then i took a hard look and went back and looked at all the statements he made about this iraq experience from 2003 to present day. There is no question that he has been exaggerating his experience from day one. And its a problem. You have a tendency to do that if you get into that habit. Couple of things im going to be on jimmy kimmel tonight. I know you will stay up and watch that i know this is going to come up. So i will deal with this then. Brian williams . Yeah.
