News in Washington I'm Corba Coleman in Mexico a veteran leftist politician has won a resounding victory in yesterday's presidential election N.P.R.'s Carrie Kahn says the president elect has repeated his pledge to clean up Mexico's corruption and crime and to never let Mexicans down beating out his closest rival by more than 20 points and as Manuel Lopez Obrador becomes the 1st leftists elected to Mexico since its began its modern democratic transition more than 30 years ago in an attempt to calm international markets Lopez Obrador told supporters that his government will be fiscally conservative won't raise taxes nor increase the national debt but it will put the poor 1st N.P.R.'s Carrie Kahn reporting President Trump has congratulated Lopez Obrador on Twitter he says he looks forward to working with him and adds there is much work to be done. There's a political crisis in Germany over migration and it could collapse Chancellor Angela Merkel's government Germany's interior minister is threatening to quit rather than back down on a tougher line on asylum seekers N.P.R.'s Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson has more on this is possible but told reporters when you know he's going to Berlin to meet with me I'll go and try and find common ground but many German politicians say they suspect the real agenda is to get the chancellor to leave her post they say Merkel brought back a deal from the European Union summit in Brussels on Friday that toughens the Bloc stance on migration but Segal for us says it's not enough that the issue is credibility his party is facing a tough challenge from the far right Alternative for Germany party in fall elections and any appearance of capitulating to MacHall could cost faction their super majority in the Varian parliament Soraya Sarhaddi Nelson n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King Mexicans have elected a populist leftist as their new president his anti-corruption anti-establishment message struck a chord with an electorate that is angry over skyrocketing violence and race Manuel Lopez Obrador beat out his top 2 rivals early counts show he won more than half of the vote he promises to clean up Mexico's corruption help the poor and the elderly and have a cooperative respectful relationship with the United States and P.R.'s Carrie Kahn is with us now from Mexico City where celebrations continued into the early hours of this morning hi Carrie Hi good morning so this was Lopez Obrador 3rd time running for president he was not successful in the past and now he's got an overwhelming win what changed I think 2 things changed the Mexico was very different and so was candidate Lopez Obrador 1st Mexico is so much more violent than it was during his previous 2 runs for president there were nearly 30000 murders here last year and this year looks even more violent he was very different as a candidate this time around he toned down some of his rhetoric he was less confrontational and he built this odd wider coalition he had everything in there from leftists to the workers' party to this conservative evangelical party and then more than that he honed in on his message his main message is just corruption is the number one problem in Mexico causing everything from poverty poor economic output inequality all of it and it was a strong message and it was very well received this time well you've been traveling the country talking to voters tell me what did what did people say after his win last night voters all day were just saying that they went to the polls for a change but I heard that over and over again everybody said. You know Lopez Obrador is when I think was a repudiation of the current administration just if you would listen to these chants the. Crowds that gathered all over downtown Mexico City last night. Shouting Mexico without the pre the ruling party here is so unpopular right now it's been embroiled in countless corruption scandals of the federal the state level local level for the past 6 years and I think more than voters wanting to bring in a leftist government this is more about an anti-establishment vote and electric very angry over the corruption violence and the impunity that's rampant in this country these days Lopez Obrador came out and he gave a couple of different victory speeches last night right what did he what did he say in those well he went back through his long list of promises he says he's going to work hard he's going to be honest he repeated several times that he wants to go down in history as one of Mexico's greatest presidents he spoke to this massive crowd in Mexico City's historic Zocalo Plaza and he said he promised he would not let him them down he said that a couple times I will not let you down and I will live by these 3 basic tenants. Not. You know not. So he said no lying no stealing and no betraying the people Long Live Mexico he shouted to thunderous applause sounds like something people really wanted to hear they did one big thing that remains to be seen is the relationship that Mexico will have under Lopez Obrador with the United States what is he said about President Trump about working with him or not well it really didn't come up that much during the campaign Trump was not an issue during the campaign mainly because all of the 3 major candidates pretty much said the same thing they all said they're going to demand respect from Trump and yet they're going to continue to cooperate with the United States and that's what Lopez Obrador said last night he said he wants a cooperative respectful relationship with the u.s. You know present. Trump and the current president Enrique Pena Nieto have had a tense relationship mostly over Trump's insistence that Mexico pay for a u.s. Border wall but President Trump did tweet his congratulations last night to the Mexican president elect Kerry let me get your 3000 foot perspective on something given the depth of corruption in Mexico do you think that this new president can actually make good on his promises to stamp it out it's a it's a tall order you know I ask that of voters that were voting for the exact same question can he do all that you know I really feel like expectations are high but not really that high people are people know how terrible the situation is right now and they're saying one person even said you know if you could just get a little bit done that would be better. So I think that expectations are sort of realistic how difficult the problem is and how entrenched corruption and violence is in Mexican society right now N.P.R.'s Carrie Kahn in Mexico City Carrie thanks so much You're welcome. Next we have a glimpse of life Salvador conditions there become a factor in the news here in the United States some Salvadorans seeking asylum at the u.s. Border say they are fleeing gang violence at home in El Salvador is gang dominated neighborhoods boys and men say they have 3 choices they can migrate they can join a gang or they can make a surprising 3rd choice Emily Green reports from. People drive around with their car windows closed to avoid petty theft but when you enter the neighborhoods controlled by gangs you keep your window open to show your face that way the gangs know you're not an enemy in the center of once had sniper Hood known as Dina says a tiny Baptist Church Street in this incredibly violent neighborhood is the one place. Around 10 former gang members easily identifiable by their head to toe tattoos. The church's newest member is 24 year old Jose. Has a tattoo on his chin that confirms his allegiance to the gang 18 which he joined when he was 14 after his brother was assassinated by a rival gang like many gang members he embraced evangelical Christianity when a pastor approached him in prison. For. The pastor started talking to him about his life in the gang about everything that happened with his family and then the pastor started talking about God and how the even church would embrace him. Says his heart was touched and the church a pastor talks about the gangs the Pangaea. The. Prison. The door for new beginnings. Always Faithful even when others aren't He prays for gang members to leave behind a life of violence and join the church pastor Nelson was has led this church for 21 years even at the moment as. The God we preach is one of opportunity our message is that they should understand there is a life outside the gang they can make it with the help of God It is this emphasis on personal transformation that makes gang members embrace the Evangelical Church says Cruz a researcher at Florida International University study the relationship between the 2 Around half of all gang members identify with the evangelical church according to his research and attend services around 15 times a month. And contrast just 17 percent of gang members identify with the Catholic Church and those that do are less religious He says they feel that him until he goes are more welcoming this their criminal past and they feel embrace. By the church true says becoming a devoted member of the evangelical church at a young age is the only way many adolescents are able to avoid being roped into a gang and it's also the only way for them to get out of a gang if they're in it you join the gang you joining them in your church or your leavers out of door and you migrate so those are sort of the 3 options down young people in these communities. Groups how Carlos Martinez is a journalist with the Salvadoran news outlet Fattal and covers gangs he says the gangs also feel protected by the Evangelical churches to some extent the churches were founded in the very poor communities that gangs control you don't know when you're young enough to be they are the community and they have learned to live alongside the gang members who they have known since they were kids because at the end of the day it's their sons husbands boyfriends parents and nephews. Are. Back at the church preacher miles calls on the members to stand and to pray one former gang member. That clinches his best and prays for Bentley under his breath. Or something or other if there. Was a gang member for 22 years tattoos cover his entire face the number 18 is tattooed 18 times on his body a reference to his allegiance to the barrio 18 gang during his time in the gang he says he kidnapped and robbed people. Raped when then then he was sentenced to prison for those crimes and thanks to an evangelical pastor there he found God that was 9 months ago now he says God knows about his past and has pardoned him in your show Christiane or our He's a Christian he says and the gang respects that but he says if he fails as a Christian they will kill him for n.p.r. It's Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm Noel King yesterday Canada's retaliatory tariffs directed at the United States went into effect these tariffs are on nearly $13000000000.00 worth of u.s. Goods that's everything from aluminum and steel to yogurt and whiskey the move of course is payback for president Trump's tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum we're going to talk all this through with Christoph Bondi He has negotiated trade deals on Canada's behalf and he now practices law with Cooley l.l.p. When Mr Gandhi Good morning I saw him look at this list of things that tariffs have been placed on steel and aluminum we expected yogurt strawberry jam sleeping bags ballpoint pens this seems a little random but is Canada sending a political message to the United States with this list. The list is composed of products which Canadians do import from the United States and it is meant to show the impact of adopting tariffs on the basis as the u.s. Has of national security where there is no justification for that and this isn't something that Canada was looking for at all in fact Canada spent a month trying to talk the u.s. Out of the current steel and aluminum tariffs but now they're going ahead and yes they are targeting a range of products which Canadians would typically import from the u.s. But it is proportionate to the impact of the u.s. Tariffs on Canadian still and Illumina how likely is this to affect American companies the steel companies but also the strawberry jam companies. Mr Bunny Can you hear me Christoph Gandhi in London to go she did trade deals on Canada's behalf you know practices law with Cooley l.l.p. Mr Bundy still there. I think we're likely to have to say goodbye to Mr Bundy Yeah we'll try to get back to him as soon as we can as it is we get a line that works but let's move on because there's a lot of news this morning including this last night Russians celebrated as if their team a just one soccer's World Cup The host nation has only qualified for the quarterfinals so far but the doing far better than expected N.P.R.'s Lucien Kim joined the party in downtown Moscow before the big game against Spain on Sunday the Russian team tweeted to its fans that it was facing the most important match in its history they weren't exaggerating Russia has never made it this far in a World Cup The Best Performance by a Soviet team dates back to more than half a century ago. Were people draped in Russian flags in downtown Moscow to horn visitors wore their colors to and every nationality seems present. Equal tailgating next the Bolshoi Theatre blasting music from their cars in the streets and dancing with strangers. To School and actors was loving it. Was thankful for all the foreign visitors Moscow is the capital of the world right now and say here's the soccer love and people. You see in Kim n.p.r. News Moscow. Ok so a lot happening here in the world this morning we were just hearing the discussion of the World Cup We heard the discussion of Canada's national security justification for tariffs on strawberry jam here this is a really interesting scenario see we were having it explained to us that because the United States has said our tariffs on Canadian aluminum and steel are justified by national security which of course upset Canada very much Canada says where u.s. Ally. I'm not sure on and now Canada has this list this long list of things that it is imposing on it is opposing tariffs on that come from the United States including strawberry jam sleeping bags ballpoint pens and I guess it's saying in return I get we are not on the pedestal a security license Come on out what Canada has to preserve the ballpoint pen industry in Canada because that could be you know vital to national security you never know and soldier out there somewhere and you know reaches in the pocket and they need a Canadian ballpoint pen Let's talk about some of the other news happening around the world right now Republican Senator Susan Collins is talking about President Trump's upcoming choice for the United States Supreme Court she says that she would oppose any nominee that she believed was dedicated had declared an opposition to the landmark Roe versus Wade decision that legalized abortion now this is a big deal obviously Republicans are trying to make sure if they can manage if they if that if they can manage to to not make the Supreme Court choice a referendum on abortion that's something that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has said he does not want however the president the United States has said that he is picking from a list of about 25 possible nominees that have already been vetted by conservative groups some other news now several families who had fled danger and violence overseas were enjoying a 3 year old's birthday party and Boise Idaho when a man ran up and began chasing and stabbing the children and the adults who tried to. Intervene this was the attack on Saturday night at an apartment complex that is home to refugee families 9 people were injured including the birthday girl and 5 other children ranging in age from 4 to 12 and after being separated at the u.s. And. This is n.p.r. News. Canada is striking back at the u.s. With retaliatory tariffs of more than $12000000000.00 Canadians are live at the anger is across the country many are boycotting u.s. News I'm Noel King and I'm Steve Inskeep the comments on President Trump's chance to nominate a Supreme Court justice include some from Lindsey Graham the South Carolina Republican says he hopes not to make the choice a referendum on abortion and he says to quote my pro-life friends that conservatives can believe in the legal concept that some cases are already decided still the president has said he will choose from a list of possible justices already cleared by conservatives so can this be more than a referendum on one issue and p.r. White House correspondent Scott Horsley is here hey there Scott good morning so how is the president trying to smooth this out well look the president made a very clear when he campaigned in 2016 that he would use his opportunity if it arose to appoint Supreme Court justices who would vote to overturn Roe v Wade that list you mention of conservative potential nominees was a big selling point for this president with social conservatives whether they took him literally or seriously they expect him to point a to appoint to nominate judges who would take a hard line on Roe v Wade now the president was talking with reporters on Friday he said he wouldn't ask. Candidates about that directly and he reiterated that in an interview with Fox Business News I don't think I'm going to be so specific in the questions I'll be answering and I'm actually told that I shouldn't be you know the president doesn't really need to though because the folks at the Federal Society and the Heritage Foundation who put together this list they knew what he was looking for well let's listen to one of the Republicans the president will be counting on its $5149.00 in the Senate so they can only lose one Republican if no Democrats were to go along which we don't really know about but Maine's Susan Collins spoke on c.n.n. Yesterday and said this I would not support a nominee Oh demonstrated hostility to Roe v Wade does that amount. To a roadblock not necessarily you know the president can just avoid that by picking a nominee whose hostility or the way it has been kept under wraps again all because you said demonstrated hostility to Roe versus Wade Ok and we have a tradition now of conservative nominees going before the Judiciary Committee and saying Well Senator I wouldn't want to prejudge that issue as since it might come before me what what Senator Collins said is she's looking for someone who would respect the precedent of Roe v Wade but again the president was very clear during the campaign of what he was looking for and we've already seen this court turn its back on presidents just in the last week or so Scott one of the thing to ask about this was a weekend of protests in Washington d.c. And in fact in many other cities across the country people protesting the administration's immigration policies including the recent and not yet fully corrected separation of families is the White House responding you know the president did backtrack on family separation against a huge public backlash but otherwise he continues to insist on a get tough immigration policy. The White House is now planning to keep families together but to keep them indefinitely and they've ordered the construction of 10 cities to accommodate that on military bases so no the president is not really backing away from a get tough policy on immigration he thinks that's a winner for Republicans in November N.P.R.'s Scott Horsley thanks You're welcome. News I'm Noel King and I'm Steve Inskeep we have a glimpse now of American forces fighting on the border between Iraq and Syria Iraqis of mostly driven ISIS out of their country and back into Syria now Iraqi forces have stepped across the border into Syria we're told and u.s. Troops are supporting them and P.R.'s Traynor Raf is it in them along that border Hi there Jane hi there so what is the problem that Americans and their allies are addressing So basically they drove ISIS out of almost every city they've been in ISIS had a 3rd of Iraqi territory of Iraq is territory of another across the border and there's a fear that they could come back in so at the base we went to which is called a fire support base because u.s. Soldiers who are protected by Marines are launching artillery and those are those big guns with more than a 10 mile range they're shooting at ISIS targets just across the border and that's where we spoke to Sergeant Jason Powell from Louisville Kentucky he's $31.00 and he's been out there almost a month he was standing next to a rack of artillery shells showing me how he's given a target and then he directs his crew to load these huge rounds and fire them it all starts with the Forward Observer they're going to something that needs to be maybe we're calling for fire to destroy the enemy or just train denial the number of different reasons and dream denial means preventing ISIS from holding ground or coming back cross the border and I'm just trying to figure this out Jane when you say there's a forward observer I guess that means right there is an Iraqi or an American or a drone or something that is operating across that border on the Syrian side right to where they can see the time yeah that's a great question so traditionally in the past they have been u.s. Special forces and they perhaps still are there also Iraqi spotters and they do use drones and other surveillance other surveillance mechanisms but he's talking about an actual person Ok so there is some kind of cross border operation going on with u.s. Artillery support what is life like on that base where the artillery is being fired . It's really a steer so you fly in by helicopter and this is about a mile from the Syrian border in the desert there are no buildings there just tents it's about 100 degrees in there's no air conditioning there's sand everywhere and scorpions and huge biting spiders but despite that one of the soldiers I talked to private Clayton told me that they Ok to have fun they've taken the handles from pickaxes to use his baseball bats that must feel like a real skill actually playing baseball with a pick axe handle. It's . Not training Ok So they're either trying to be accurate with artillery or with picks at pick axes so the Americans are there on the border the western border how security like in the rest of Iraq. It's a lot better than it was so what Iraq says is ISIS has been defeated militarily but what that means is there are still pockets of ISIS and particularly in those seams between security forces who don't always get along either the Kurdish forces or Iraqi government forces or a variety of forces so the best way to describe it is probably relatively secure but fragile Ok And of course u.s. Forces now operating in the biggest seam of all that border line between Iraq and Syria thanks very much thank you that's N.P.R.'s. Morning Edition from n.p.r. News I'm Steve Inskeep and I'm. I'm David Brancaccio in New York Mexico has a new president on the way Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador a leftist as won Mexico's election in a landslide with 53 percent of the vote also exit polls so far show his party winning a majority in the Mexican congress Marketplace's Marial cigar is here live with more on the new Mexican president's economic agenda this election signals a big change for Mexico in terms of economic policy in part because Lopez Obrador is from a party they he started only a few years ago he is a left wing populist he said in his victory speech that his administration would give preference to the poorest and the forgotten and he's promised to root out corruption in the next 2nd government in fact he said he'd overhaul government contracts cut the salaries of officials and use that money for public projects and social welfare but he also said his party will show fiscal discipline the peso rose about one percent after exit polls showed Lopez Obrador might win but then it fell again after the official count and the thinking is investors are skittish that potential spending on social policies could push the country into debt marketplaces Marial thank you in fact I'm looking at the peso now the dollar is up in the pace it was down it costs about just over $20.00 pesos to buy u.s. Dollar the venerable Business Alliance known as the u.s. Chamber of Commerce today is set to attack President Trump's tariffs Reuters has seen the plan to be unveiled today that will list. State by State where the chamber believes the u.s. Tariffs and the retaliation they've prompted will hit consumers in the paycheck the chambers in favor of seeking what it calls free and fair trade but not the Trump way student numbers the $100.00 share index in London is down 9 tenths of a percent Dow s. And p. And Nasdaq futures are all down pretty sharply 7 tenth's percent for the Dow future about 810 percent for the Nasdaq future indication of interest rates down the 10 year yield is down at 2.83 percent the number 3 social media company in America just behind Google and You Tube is now nope not that one number 3 is Reddit a place where people with interests from the profound to the ridiculous can interact anonymously read it takes just about everyone support groups for people coping with adversity a fan club for the letter g. And people who espouse naked racism I spoke with Reddit co-founder and c.e.o. Steve Huffman about a distinction he tries to draw between beliefs which on Reddit are Ok and noxious behavior which Reddit tries to limit with human moderators or by pulling the plug I asked Huffman about being the c.e.o. Of a free speech oriented company during riots last summer in Charlottesville Virginia where Hoffman went to college. Also was a pretty emotional experience for me personally that as that is where I grew up that's my home and I didn't like seeing that happen in the real world and I and then your initial reaction was what I was upset there's a lot of emotions there as I was quite angry there was a community on Reddit at the time that was almost apologist for what happened there and that was that was deeply upsetting and my kneejerk reaction right is just get them off the site I know the answer here you know we can we can figure it out later fortunately I'm not those the sole decision maker in these conversations and and I think we had a productive and rational decision about it and that there's a cooling off period for used well for me personally Fortunately the team was already on it and we had actually before the Charlottesville tragedy had been refining our language around violence and glorifying violence and and the in the wake of that was a really good motivation to get that wrapped up pretty quick and I'm glad we did that maybe robots can fix this I know you actually have humans on the case trying to figure out what goes too far on Reddit but maybe artificial intelligence can come in here and do some of your work for you you know maybe but I'm I'm I'm skeptical I think that technology guy like you said this is maybe I think it like in machine learning can like we're going to do incredible things and I think the future is very very bright as a computer science tool for right now building better models and they're becoming increasingly complex so we can do some incredible things but a model we've always had it right at is let humans do the hard part and so when we're talking about things like classification and setting standards for discourse and policy enforcement I'm actually a huge proponent of how do we share that burden with our community because the only thing that scales with users is users and I think we've got a long way to go right when my spell check when auto correct gets a little better on my phone then we can start talking about you know ai is the solution all of our Probably. Yes. I think we have to. Be easy. The number 3 in the United States after Google and You Tube say thank you my pleasure thank you we spoke at the Aspen Ideas Festival in. Wimbledon tennis and organizers are using artificial intelligence to try to reach a younger audience faster than ever on social media using I.B.M.'s Watson supercomputer to pick game highlights almost instantly but what might that mean for regular broadcasters that by all these rights to the coverage marketplace is run out of Sago has more if you've watched a tennis match this kind of crowd response probably sounds familiar. This is from last year's Wimbledon ladies singles final between Venus Williams and kind of going to with the the Watson computer picked it as a highlight and this year the computers enhanced even more to track crowd noise and players body movements to prepare a highlights real within 5 minutes it's a task that takes human video editors longer and Sam set in with i.b.m. Says speeds important if you believe with content and a major market that is what people will follow initially set in as that with quick post to Facebook and Instagram Wimbledon hopes to Laura a younger audience but Marty Conway who teaches sports management at Georgetown says one can't go so far that it competes with broadcast partners like e.s.p.n. They want to have all eyeballs directed at Wimbledon content on their platform e.s.p.n. Into reported $500000000.00 deal in 2011 to broadcast Wimbledon for 12 years I'm not a say go for Marketplace in New York I'm David Brancaccio with Marketplace Morning Report.
