Audience by several Million People in fact. There is nearly as many polls as candidates but on the democratic side little has changed in recent days. According to this weeks nationalemocratic pole, Hillary Clinton has a 33 edge on bernie sanders. Clinton pollings at 39 support, sanders at 26 and Martin Omalley with 4 . The numbers are only a couple percentage poioints off from another poll taken in october after joe biden announced he would not join the race. On the issues the economy and jobs, were most often mentioned by those participating in that poll. The former first lady contitinues to pack a punch on the campaign trail. This week adding vermt senator in 2004 president ial candidate howard dean to growingist of supporters. The former Democratic National chairman says as secretary of state clinton built relationship with foreign l leadersnd offers credibility with many of them. State going all the way from sioux city to davenport with about half a dozen stops in between. As far back as 202014 he said he would support hillary clion should she decide to make a run for the whi house. He was a medical doctor earning a degree from Albert Einstein college of medicine in 1978. He served in the vermont house of representatives through 1986. 6. Later was named lieutenantgernor and becoming the states 79th and second longest serving governor in 1991. After his unsucuccessful president ial run in 2004, dean was named chairman of the Democrat Party national committetee. To this dailies 50 state strategy is seen as a significant partf thee partys successful Congressional Campaign in 2006. As well as president obamas eight year run at the white house. Joining me is mr. Dean, and we thank you for taking time to be with us this morning. Thanks for having me on. We mentioned a couple moments ago yo first trip bac i forgot how big iowa is. When youre in very month its real the distance is a lot bier. Thats for sure. Lets talk about that. Thatss why youre here in iowa. On the stump for mrs. Clinton. Tell me about wt drew you to hilly clinton versus the other two candidates. One of them from your home state, bernie sanders. I have known hillary for a very long time. The thing i like about her themost is that she is fact based. When shehe makes a decision its based on facts, not a belief about something. That is really, really valuable. Were in a bit of a tight spot in this country, not just economically but particularly in foreign affairs. I want somebody who will make tough, smart decisns based on the facts. What is it that she has done in herast that leads you to think that will happen . Ell, just recently before the race got going she was asked people to be on the supreme court. The politically correct answer is no, because ive had to make those appointments in the state myselflf. She said do i ve a litmus test. Im going to a appoint somebody who will notot support citizens united. Its a coreorrosive influence on our polits. I think hillary understands if you have a system where wealthy people get much more accs thahan regular people thats bad for america. And she did that just based o onthe facts. And that those are the facts. So thats just one example of taking a position based on what she thinks is best for the country, not bas on some ideology or belief. Lets talk about the campapaign this year. There has been comparisons to 2004. Especially on democratic side andetween yoursf and bernie sanders. A lot changed since 2004. The pty has changed, much more minority based with 40 party, its a Younger Party than it was 12, 13 years ago. Do you see corollaries between the race then and now or the party . Some corollari. Bernies argument is economic. Mine was again about facts. We were in the middle of a war, and we had been misled. The public h had been misled about what the facacts were. I thoughthat was ptty bad. I was governor fo a long time, 12 years, and the facts matter when youe the goverr and the president. There is quite a bit of dierences, as well. I had a lot of National Experience in terms of being he of national governorsassociation, but i was an outside candidate. I think bernies as a senator is playing the role of an outside but hes a senator. Mrs. Clinton has been criticized for some of her comments involving foreign a fairs, some of the different different thingsgs that her statements werent totally truthful, the accusation proven to be false sometimes. Should mrs. Clinton be put out bear r on those p points . The benghazi was like the other scandndals, wte water, this is a group of people in the rightwing who are conspiracy theoriests. They got the New York Times to buy into this stuff the same with the email controversy. This is nonsense. I think were at a evaluate our candidas on the left and the right based on what their accomplishments are and what their potential for doinghings that are good for the country, not scandal mongering and scandal stuff. Whatts happen outside our borders gets plenty of attention, but in the recent days whats happening iide our borders. Nationally as well as insnside the united states, bringing that what is there that Hillary Clinton will do that the others cant do to better protect us inside our own borders. She is the only perso with any experience on either side of the aisle on this one. She really knows a lot of the key players, and i dont think thats true of anybody else to speak of. On either side. The thing that one of the things she has done, which i think also is driven by the fact and she hasas differences from the president on this one, i happenn to aee with hillary, e thinks we should have a nofly zone in syria. Thateans we would establish an area in syria which would be free of all the conflict thats going on, assad wouldnt be running the place. We would keep the syriaair force and other air air forces out. That would have prevented the regee crisis were seeing in why you were those are the kinds of things that i dont really truthfully exctative in the other people running for preside to understand, because theyve never been in that chair. Theyve never had to sit next to states while they assassinated bin den. That experience you cant have, and we would i would like that kd of experience in the white house from day one. Ets take that step further. If you look at the republica side of the campaign right now, onon a daily basis lately at least the talk of the refugees, muslims and what not, all tied into t same picture. Yet on the democratic side, its been pretty q qet in those discussions. Did the democrats sit back and take any joy in watching things that are happening in the republican side during this campaign . Thats a really good question. I think you know we can inside the beleltway you can think oh, yeah this gossip and that gossip, we want two people running against each other that will be good for the country. I think Hillary Clinton would be really good for the country. I think we have yet to see the viable candidate erge on the other side who will be good for the country. Peoplehether itsfundamentalist christians or evangelicals or any ethnic group or another religio and brand them all with a same tag. There is bad people in every single group. The bad people are out numbered by the good people. That is one of the core principle bells upon which america is founded. You u cant play to people emotions. Obviously people are upset. What happened in san berrdino and what happened in paris was terrible. We need to beef up our intelligence, we need to have more scrutiny. I d dont mind having more scrutiny of people coming from the middle east. Theres nonothing wrong with that. To ban a whole group of people from coming to the united state is crazy. The vast majority of american muslims have b been hereor several generations. Second of all making a good living and third of all theyre playing a lot of taxes. We ought to treat them like everybody else in america a lot of people may not know you were a doctor in previous days, so i want to ask you about health care with the Affordable Health car act. Its now a full four years or as you look at that, are there still portions that you would like to see changed or rewritten to better serve the American People or whats your feeling today on well first of all i think the Affordable Care act made it possible for a lot more people to have insurance. Lets not forgive hillary 25 years ago probably the first major figure who really advanced health care down the line since Lyndon Johnson who was responsible for medicare and medicaid. So i do think the Affordable Care act is a step in t right direction, very much so. Theres 30 million more americanthat have health before. And at a time when were trying to boost the middle class and make it easier to stay in the middle class Health Insurance is really critical. I would like to see some more help with premiums. A lot of working people cant afford some of the premis. I think its great when the states accept medicaid. We as you may remember every child in my state under the age of 18 had Health Insurance when and they still do. That was a whole generation of vermont kids who grew up with has. It has been a very, very good thing a and kept our kids in a positioner they could go work and get good jobs and not have to worry aut health care. I want to talk about the campgn just a little bit. During your campaign in 2004, obviously things started strong. You were out in front and unable to hang on to the m momentum in the late stages. Can you look at this Years Campaign either side of the aisle and give us your opinions of how the campaigns have gone and if people are going to bee able, if those candidates will be able to hang on to the momentum that didnt happen in 2004 . Well, its hard to say. Obviously the Republican Campaign is very interesting one. And there already has been a leadership change recently. That happe a lot. In iowa the great thing about iowa pololitics, a especially all you dont know who is going to show up. Lf the battle is being well organized. I was the chairman of the party when barack obama and Hillary Clinton were running in 08 a i couldnt take sides. I knew that barack obama could be president after he won in iowa because i know what it takes to win in iowa. You have to be unbelievably well organized, and tha is a very important part of being presidt of the united states. To so dont know because were down to the las40 some odd days, and that is thats where the action really happens. All the top sff, the last minute shifts, who has the best organization doesnt matter who in the lead in the polls in iowa right now. What matters is who has t best organization that will get their people to the caucus. 11 or 12 years remove could you se yourself today in the middle of a campaign taking the 14 years back . Would i want to do thiss again . Can you see yourself doing it again . If i were 12 years younger i it was a great experience. The thing is the people in iowa are just great. We call it iowa nice. Its not exactly like doing politics in new jersey. One of the things,s, i said Chris Christie would have a hard time in iowa because forget aboutut i is not a platform that goes well in the midwest, e especiall iowa. There will be a lot more shifting around on the opposite side in the next six w weeks than we could possibly imagine. Thank you for your time coming in this morn. I know y got a busy schedulee the next several days across the state of iowa, and the weeks to come campaigning for mrs. Clinton. We thank you for your time and its good to see you back in iowa. Thanks for having me. Been great to be back. We want to know wt you think about my conversation with mr. Dean. You can send me a note at twitter, facebook or email, any of those addresses right there on the scene. We h hrd from a few peopl following last weeks show that lawmakers from both nebraska and south dakota, and did i reached out to us on email saying if lawmakers focused on real issues the session would be even shorter. For the record, south dakota has a 38day session this year. And concecerning nebraskas upcoming session and the recent transfer of managemenfor juvenile services from state health and Human Services toohe state supreme court, we got a facebook message from a viewer in laurel. Money, guns or kids. I knn lawmakers remember whats impornt. Our future is with those who still cant vote. Still to come this morning a look back at this weeks gop delate from las vegas and later a big celration for iowagovernor terry branstadhat was decades in the making. This week in siouxland. Frontrunners, dark horses and long shots. That continues to be the best way to sum up replicans still fighting to win the partys presidtial nomination. Tuesdays debate didnt do mh to chae things. The sessionnt offer any clear cut winner. Stead candidates solidified the categories. The frontrunner, the dark horse with the long shot, some of the best back and forth featured ted cruz and marco rubio. Ted you support legal people who are in thisountry illegally. I led the fight against his legal ily situation and am nightie bill. I told voters in texas i would oppose the federalovernment having the authority to detain u. S. Citizens p permanently with no due process. You are an american citizen and you join us with eye is weree not going to read you your mimiranda rights. The next gop debate comes up in january here in iowa. It was good week in iowa for texas senator cruz. Cruz has a sevenpoint lead in the state. That poll shows cruz with 30 marco rubio and ben carson with 11while bush had six, and carly foreign three. None of the other candidates could equal her total. Different story when you look nationally. Trump with more than double digigit add van chance on cruz winning by 23 support. Ben carson hopes to irove that 11 support by spending plenty of te in wtern i iowa this week. On friday he made several stops, including sio city. After meeting with voters thursday night, carson made stap stops friday. Carson says readiness is the naons best defense. Adding that america should use any tactic necessary to protect america from foreign threats. Carson added he supportswhatever we need to do to keep america safe. Im connced that there a terror cells here already, have infiltrated our society. So we, because of laxity, are of that. So we need to start prereparingng our people, get them ready. Carson had stops in harlan and Council Bluffs saturday. Iowa republicans share in the history making day for governor branstad this week. Between now and then the credits if approved the deal provides the wind industry some certainty. After years that saw shortterm extensns. They are actually offered fourears ago to have a phase out, and bring ito an end, but nobody bid into that.
